>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2news at six. >> good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. it was a year ago today that three berkeley graduate was captured along the border of iraq and iran. they said the capture have nothing to do with the issues. we are in san francisco where people are calling for their release. >> reporter: this is an anniversary that nobody wanted to recognize. one year ago those three hikers were captured by iran. today their friends are using these cranes to call for their release. some 75 people marched around the mission district with a message of freedom. >> freedom for the hikers in iran. >> reporter: they want the iran government to release the three

point that they are friends -- as much as anything else they are friends opposed united states foreign policy. >> they have always been independent minded critical of those things of foreign policy. they are ambassadors of peace and goodwill. >> reporter: the group also stopped at a park and though they say they feel closer to seeing their friend's freedom iran is not indicating an end to the struggle is near. live in san francisco. >> fire crews quickly put out a small brush fire that sent smoke across highway 580. the fire onto westbound side of the freeway broke out around 10:30 p.m. a one lane of traffic was closed as firefighters confronted the fire. they had it out in about ten minutes. the cause is under investigation.

fire crews near palmdale in northern los angeles county are gaining ground on a massive wildfire thats have burned 14,000 acres. the crown fire is 62% contained today but has destroyed nine structures and it's still dangerously close to scores of other homes. investigators say the fire may have been sparked by workers hammering on bolts to remove a tire rim. north and kern county cooler weather has helped crews get a handle on two wildfires. they are both 80 to 85% contained. >> the highway patrol investigating a hit and run involving a charter bus and a car east of the bay bridge toll plaza. they believe a big rig hit a car that struck a charter bus carrying about 35 people at 1:30 this morning. several were taken to the hospital. the accident closed severaller several lanes of traffic. three young men charged with attempted murder after a

robery and stabbing left a 40- year-old man with life threatening injuries. police say the man was approached by about 12 people before being robbed, stabbed and beaten. authorities have not released the identities of the victim or the suspects. police say the suspects under arrest are age 17, 18 and 20. police say they are looking for more suspects. san francisco police are also investigating the early morning shooting of a young man wearing a bullet resistant vest. he was in a car near taylor around 3:30 when another man shot him. witnesses said the shooter said to the victim i told you i was coming, before he opened fire. paramedics cut the victim out of the bullet resistant vest before taking him to the hospital. he is in critical condition. >> oakland police have released the identity of a

haywood man killed in east oakland on friday. the 45-year-old was shot in the 100 block of mcarthur. the tattoo artist was in the area visiting friends when a gunman walked up and opened fire. he died at highland hospital a few minutes later. no arrests have been made and police have been unable to determine a motive. in san francisco today it was supposed to be a conversation with the candidates for governor but only jerry brown talked. we are live to explain. >> reporter: organizers of the forum said they invited candidates on both sides, republicans and democrats, and not just for the governors office -- for other races to attend the forum and address issues important to the faith based community but few of those invited accepted the opportunity. the event was called a faith

forum held this afternoon at san francisco christian center in the mission district. the candidates were asked about the role faith played in their lives but there were few to speak of. jerry brown came, meg whittman wasn't. >> i would like to see what somebody like meg whittman had to say. >> . >> i'm disappointed in a lot of them that they aren't here and not particularly meg for whatever reason. >> reporter: the whittman campaign cited a scheduling conflict but refused to be more specific. >> didn't work in the overall schedule. >> reporter: the forum wouldn't have put brown and whittman face to face but brown didn't pass the chance to make hay of her absence. >> i would like to know what role religion has played in her life. >> reporter: after accepting two other debates the whittman campaign has been critical of brown for not accepting an october 2nd debate in fresno.

brown said that was designed to fit whittman's strategy. >> she operates on what meg wants meg gets. she has a debate in fresno at 5:00 o'clock on saturday afternoon in spanish. that is her idea. >> reporter: three debates scheduled to take place weeks before the november investigation. a poll shows brown with a 37- 34% lead. that despite lopsided spending with brown still waiting to spend his campaign cash. >> i find it astounding that after spending 110 spending it's still a tied race. >> reporter: as for the first debate in the race right now that's scheduled to take place less than a month from now. whittman and brown will face off december 28th and united states davis. ken pritchett. >> a group of motorcycle riders donated school supplies to children in san mateo.

members of the owner's group gave dozens of backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils and paper to the medical center as part of the first school supply run. organizers hope the backpacks and a thousand dollar check will help families hit by the economic down turn. >> what's it going be? a meal on the table or a backpack? we want to take that decision out of the mind. >> the medical center will distribute the supplies. kid's have a special place in the hearts of the rider who for the last 19 years have been collecting toys to donate at christmas. >> another fundraiser across the bay area is aimed at helping out police dogs. pet food express is hosting all day pet washings to raise money to buy bullet proof vests for police dogs. the cover your canine fundraiser takes place today and tomorrow at all 34 pet food express stores in the bay area.

. in news of the world in gaza a funeral held for a top hamaas military commander killed in an air strike. the man died and a dozen were hurt in the air raid. the attack came after hamaas launched a rocket attack on an israeli town. it's the sharpest escalation since january of last year. two strong quakes in iran hit the country in the last 24 hours of the the first happened in northeast iran. a 5.3 hit the agricultural area at least 200 were hurt. then then morning in southern iran a 5.6 hit leveling brick buildings and hurting dozens of

people. the federal government mobilized the government to battle wildfires that have killed at least 30 people in western russia. it's the worst heat wave in 130 years with temperatures tomorrow expected to reach 104 degrees. the heat and fires have destroyed a 5th of the wheat crop and closed moscow and other areas in a haze of smoke. it's a big weekend for bp and the federal government with crews preparing to shut down the blown out well in the gulf of mexico. company officials say the two step operation is expect expected to start in a few days. the plan is to put heavy mud and cement in the well cutting off the leak for good. it'll be followed by two relief wells. while bp appears confident in the operation the government is taking a more caution approach. >> we shouldn't be writing any obit for this event until it's

sealed and we have no more oil on the surface of the water and know where it's gone to. >> reporter: bp plans to start the static kill monday night or tuesday. it may be done in as little as 24 hours or could take days. >> a greek based company pled guilty to dumping oil and waste into the san francisco bay. a judge fined them $750,000 for the illegal dumping. a coast guard inspection last february, the ship had be bypassing pollution control equipment and dumping waste overboard. >> a company has been given permission to go ahead with the world's first human trials of a stem cell therapy that could let paralyzed people walk again. the treatment injects stem cells, it's hoped they will stimulate damaged nerve cells to produce a substance that

insulates nerve cells letting them carry impulses. the fda had held up trying while it reviewed studies for side effects. new research suggests children who live in damp water damaged homes may be more likely to develop nasal allergies. the study followed nearly 1900 children for six years. it found those who lived in homes with dampness or mold problems were more likely to have nasal problems, sneezing a runny nose. they point out the findings don't prove cause and effect and it's still possible outside factors could explain the link. >> lot of people decided to go fly a kite today in berkeley. the yearly kite festival at the marina had a special guest. the consulate general of san
