good afternoon. i'm heather hole. in for tori campbell. well, they are controversial and now at oakland international airport. full body scanners are the latest security measure designed to better protect passengers. today we got a rare look at how they look. jade hernandez is live in oakland with more on the technology. >> reporter: good afternoon, about an hour ago, these units are unveiled here at oakland international. these units are already installed at san jose international airport. and from passengers who will actually be seen more of these at the terminals by the end of the year, we wanted to show you what you might experience the next time you might be asked to go through security right here in oakland, they are called advance imaging units. there are two types. they use x-rays to create images which capture a

reflection of the body. the other units use millimeter wave technology. no matter the type, the image looks like a chalk edging. besigned the -- behind the wall is a tsa april gent monitoring.. >> i put security and san fernando up there high. i travel a lot internationally. i guess speed would be a factor. it might slow you down. >> it's kind of an invasion of privacy. kind of a big brother approach to me. >> reporter: the federal security director here said these agents allow searching for weapons without physical contact with passengers. there's been some controversy

on this. tsa says the images will not be stored, transmitted or printed. we're told each image is deleted before the next passenger is scanned. right now, tsa has 157 of these units at 4 different airports of the obama administration has alloy kateed funding for fine more to be purchased and installed at airports across the country. >> while there's no one piece of technology that can be considered e silver bullet, tsa's investing two different types of imaging technology, the one currently in use at certain airports and our system here. >> reporter: we asked a half- dozen people whether they would mind using this unit.

many didn't blink. they said safety is the most important thing. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. well, more money troubles for mexico's largest air carrier means fewer flights out of the bay area -- area. mexicana airlineses have filed for bankruptcy. now, the airline is reducing the number of flights to guadalajara and it's stopped service altogether. >> as far as i know, the airline will continue to continue top rate here. we continue to be in touch with their management and are monitoring the situation. but we haven't heard any indication that they -- as far as we know they plan to continue to serve oakland international. the troubled airline and the head of the pilots union said

they will dispel any rumors of a strike. police need your help in identifying a man who sexually assaulted a young woman in the quiet neighborhood of terra linda. it happened in munson park, where parents bring their children to play. the woman was walking home at 10:00 on sunday night, when the suspect attacked her. >> the suspect came up behind her and had a knife and forced her to the ground and assaulted her in the park. he fled and she went to her home and called us from the home. >> the woman suffered some injuries and was treated from the hospital. the suspect is described as 6 feet tall, weighing 150 pounds with a goatee and thick lips. anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to come forward. ac transit riders may be running into delays today because of an ongoing labor dispute. officials at ac transit said

about 15% to 20% of the workers called in sick today. that's well above the normal 9% call-in rate. drivers are opposed to a contract imposed by the agency after negotiations broke down. late yesterday, a judge issued an injunction against that contract. ac transit may appeal the ruling but for now they must carry out the order by august 10th. san francisco supervisors are considering a muni crime fighting coordinates. it would double fines and loitering -- and address loiter. one man says he's harassed quite frequently. i say to the bus driver, driver, would you please call the police? there's a bunch of guys here

promotes crime. unlike oakley and union burk, counterfeiters don't pay corporate taxes and legitimate wages. they don't fund healthcare. >> reporter: now, authorities say the 11 people listed in this federal indictment all knew each other. in some cases they were family members and worked together and they all decide -- reside in san francisco and they are facing stiff penalties. the penalty for smuggle illegal goods in the u.s., can you face up to 20 years in prison and pay $250,000 fine. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> indeed a very serious crime. thank you. we're getting more information about the number of people killed this morning during a horrific workplace shooting in connecticut. authorities now say nine people were killed at a beer distribution company in manchester, including the

oakland police are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex in lake merritt on madison street. the officer the on the scene tell us a woman in her 20s was shot in the leg and is expected to survive. there's no word of a motive. police have not made any arrests. but they believe the shooter was a man in his 20s. tonight bay area cities are taking part in the national

look in the ktvu.com right now section. with the new school year two weeks away, city officials are increasing efforts to prevent students from skipping school. of the 56,000 students at least 9,000 are considered chronically true apartment. and that costs the school district millions of dollars every year in federal funding. officials will contact the parents of the students who are missing school and if necessary, they are prepared to take legal action. supporters and opponents of the nomination of elena kagan are getting their final say in. a vote confirmation is expected by week's in. with almost all democrats and a handful of republicans on board, she's sure to win approval. on "mornings on 2," senator barbara boxer described kagan as a trailblazer who also happens to be a woman. >> i think it's gonna be a good

>> reporter: the fact is many smaller mom and pop stores already use paper deciding on whether own. under the proposal all plastic would be banned. >> some way we're gonna have to remove -- work around it. this could be a head strapper for a dry cleaning business. the proposal lets dry cleaners off the hook because of the regular shape of the bags. produce businesses would be exempted. still, some businesses are just fed up with all of the regulations. >> perhaps if the government wants us to change the way we do business, they should give us a good monetary

interceptive. he says he was contacted by 40 cities and countries looking to replicate what san francisco had done. the state of california is one those that's taken its lead from the city of san francisco right now. the legislature is considering a statewide plastic bag ban which has the support of the governor. the san jose city council could decide today whether to put a medical marijuana tax measure on the november ballot. if approved by voters, the measure would impose a 10% tax, giving the city the highest cannabis tax in california. opponents say it would put an unfair burden on patients. san francisco is considering adding a fee to all alcoholic beverages sold in the city. the money raised would help san francisco cover the millions of dollars used for treatment for

after a disappointing -- after disappointing news. the dow and nasdaq are both down this noontime. android phones are gaining ground on the iphone with stronger u.s. sales for android for the first half of the year. now, the research firm neilsen said an droid phones made up 27% of the sales while the iphone accounted for 23%. other research finds the sale of the androids jumped 27% while iphones drew 67%. the iphones still dominate the market with 28% of the share,an it seems that sea otters are having a hard time in surviving in california's waters. the latest numbers show the threatened species is in decline for the second year in a row. that's after a decade of steady recovery. researchers say there are fewer

pups and a higher mortality rate. could this finally be the end of the road for brett favre? i know you probably are thinking we've heard this before but there is word this morning that the minnesota vikings player is retiring. again, the 40-year-old had ankle surgery in may and told reporters last week that he didn't know if his body could withstand another nfl season. favre has made an official announcement but after a few announcements the last few years, many are questioning is this really it. stay tuned. coming up on the news at 5:00, an investigation is underway into the death of an 11-year-old boy. collapsed during a football practice, a youth practice, in the el dorado county foothills. the coroner is conducting an autopsy to try to find out how the boy died we'll take a closer look at this tragedy and the medical issues that face
