good morning. thank you for joining us on this friday, august 6th. i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check the weather traffic. here is steve. >> thank you very much, pam and dave. low clouds and fog. all the reporting stations say cloudy, concord says mostly cloudy. nevertheless, the fog will burn up soon and sooner than yesterday. it's not going to do much to the temperatures. closer to beaches, though, 60s and around the bay, 60s and 70s. here is sal. there is a crash eastbound 580 on 23rd on ramp. the ramp is blocked with an overturned vehicle and several other cars have stopped to assist the fire department and the chp are on the way. that's the 23rd street on ramp. this morning's commute on westbound 80 looks pretty good heading out to the mcarthur maze. 6:01. back to the desk. oakland police uncovered a pot

growing operation overnight. tara moriaryt is live with details on what led police to that scene. >> good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is a restaurant on the bottom floor and a marijuana growing operation to the floor. we are on 12th street and 12th avenue right off interstate 880. police received a burglary call. as they arrive, they discovered more than 20 marijuana plant as well as equipment to sustain a major operation. when police arrived, they saw two men, one man was arrested immediately. the second suspect tried to run. he was caught by the canine which bit hip three times.

>> they said, what i'm doing? i said talking to my girlfriend and that's all. >> again, police came tout to this aledged pot house two years ago around the same exact time, just after merchandise night when two men when trying to break in and try to steal marijuana. police say it is especially frustrating because cops are using their valuable time and resources on the same crime. police will be coming back here later on today to retrieve that. it's not known if the restaurant and the illegal growing operation are connected. live in oakland, tara moriarty. antioch police have surveillance photos from a bank robbery that they hope will help track down three armed suspects. the men held up the bank of the west branch on lone tree way yesterday shortly after noon. they escaped, put the cash in a

honda civic driven by a fourth person. the car was last seen heading north on hillcrest anesthesia towards wild horse drive police in milbrae arrested one of two suspects in the stabbing death of a 20-year-old man killed wednesday night at mills high school. one suspect who is unidentified so far was taken to jail in redwood city late last night. he is also 20-year-old and is also being questioned in the death of jared hafu. jared's parents say that they do not know why he ended up at the high school. but wins say he was involved in a fight and suffered multiple wounds. i just want to know what happened to my son as he was lying there and dying. >> reporter: jared was the youngest of seven children. he had planned to go on a two-

year mission for the mormon church this fall. milbrae police are still questioning witnesses as the investigation in this case continues. today is another important step in the contentious legal battle off proposition 8 and same-sex marriage. the church who overtrpd the same-sex marriage ban issued a temporary stay -- the judge who overturned the same sex marijuana ban issued a temporary stay. the judge he is decision on the stay is expected in the next week or two we do have complete coverage of the proposition 8 legal battle on our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. when the judge makes his decision on the stay, we will post that online as well there is a new plan to increase the safety of some of muni's most dangerous lines and it involves so-called community

ambassadors. ktvu's allie rasmus is in san francisco now with a look at what these ambassadors will be doing. >> good morning. we are at the 4th street and king muni rail line and this is one of the places where you may find one of those ambassadors. your role is to serve as a liaison. we will be riding the muni train on the third street t line, one of the trains that stops here on king street and 3rd stop. they will be on the train early morning and early evening hours. there are 12 ambassadors in the program and they speak seven different languages between them many they were introduced to the community at a press conference and their role is to provide riders with safety tips, emergency numbers, language assistance and any questions or concerns they may have about muni. the program was created in response to several violent attacks in muni. several of those victims were elderly and members of the

city's asian community. >> it was vial en, particularly violence it against seniors and members of our multi-long wage mine east community. we must move forward and make sure we continue these kinds of programs because they are good for everyone, good for seniors, young people and for very, very young children because they can also feel safe. >> the funding for the ambassadors program comes from the city paid for by grants from the federal government. city leaders say they are looking at other revenue sources after that so that they can keep this ambassadors program going. allie rasmus, ktvu. 6:07 the time. back with sal. let's check in on the commute. >> we are trying to figure out the last time we heard about this accident, it was reported to us in oakland.

the relief well will connect to the broken well and to follow the oil right up to a tanker on the surface. that work should be finished by the middle of august. >> the fbi says that a suspected al-qaeda operative to lived for more than 15 years in the u.s. has now become chief of al-qaeda's global operations. fbi counter terrorism experts say that the 35-year-old man has taken over a position once held by the september 11th master hand, halid sheik muhammad. thinks the first time a leader so intimately familiar with american society had been placed in charge of attacks the pentagon is now demanding that wikileaks take down classified documents. they are also demanding that the site take down several documents already posted on the

the last thing we can afford right now is to go back to the very same special interest laden policies that created this mess in the first place. >> but critics say that the president's policies have fallen far short of what's given to give a bigger boost to the economy and they say that today's job report is proof of that. president obama will weigh in in a few hours when he visits a signs factory that's hiring more workers. today, president obama will host a white house reception celebrating the confirmation of elena kagan as the newest member of the u.s. supreme court. kagan was confirmed by the senate yesterday. she will be sworn in tomorrow by chief justice john roberts. with ka dan on the court, it will be the first time ever that three women have served on the u.s. supreme courtt the same time.

one of president obama's leading economic advisor is leeing the white house to rurpg to teaching at uc berkeley. the white house issued a statement saying that her family commitments are the reason for ms. romer's departure. she plans to go back to her former job as professor of economics at uc berkeley. the senate judiciary committee unanimously approved had he melinda haag to the u.s. attorney. the mother of one of the three u c become lee graduates imprisoned in iran says she received an alarming phone call from her daughter. sarah short's mother says that her daughter was allowd to call her monday telling her about

new health problems, specifically a lump in her breast. she is very concerned about this because she keeps asking for medical care and she keeps being denied medical care. this is alarming me. >> reporter: she asked the united nations to intervene. she has asked the u.n. to persuade irrap to give her daughter the medical attention she needs and help get her out of sol teary confinement. you can read more about this. this will make a lot of people happy. caltrans contractors working on the caldecott tunnel will start carving up the fourth bore on monday. the four bore is expected to be finished in late 2013.

bea bridge traffic is beginning to recover after a stalled vehicle on the span for a while. the traffic at the toll plaza i is building sheriff deputies have been taking notes of the homeless people still camping on the steps. the protesters wants to get rid of the camping ban or have city create more shelters. city and county official as well as the sheriff's office are reportedly working on a plan and how and what to do about this continuing demonstration. a friend of former b.a.r.t. police officer johannes mehserle is now speaking out. he test us how mehserle acted in the hours and days after he shot and killed unarmed

oakland youth development center will soon represent the united states in the first world youth olympics. her name is trinity wilson. here is a photo of her. she is only one of two student athletes from california representing team usa in track. trinity will be competing in the 100-meter hurdles and will live in the olympic vimmage in singapore. the first event is scheduled for august 17th coming up next, we have new details about a plane crash in colorado and it has a bay area connection. in milbrae, police have one subject suspect custody in connection with a wednesday homicide. find out how police arrested him. also the opening bells about to ring on wall street. they are busy. pam will have all the numbers.

police are still looking for one man in connection with the deadly attack on a milbrae -- at a milbrae high school. kraig debro is at the station with more on the first arrest. >> we got back from the scene of the crime wednesday night. i want to show you video of that. as we said, one person is in custody, police looking for second suspect. the homicide took place on wednesday night at the tennis courts at mills high school milbrae. signs of the aftermath were still visible on the ground. police say 20-year-old jared afu was stabbed several times and died at the scene. wins saw what happened but the victim's parents say they may never really know why. >> i just want to know what happened to my son, because he was lying there and dying.

>> police say the killer stabbed jared afu following or during a fight. a published report says that fight started after jared declined a request for a cigarette. he died went night around 7:30. his parents say he had out of the four-hour automotive class. they didn't know he would stop there. >> my jared, so easy going and loyal friend. >> reporter: this video from last night's incident. one of the suspects being driven into the county jail. he may be ducking down in the back. you may not see him. police confirm he was back there an officer here tells us that the suspects surrendered to police last night he is a 20- year-old suspect like the victim, 20 years of age. police say the suspect has given a statement to police. they didn't tell us what exactly he said. police are still looking for a second suspect in this homicide. coming up on mornings on 2,

what the victim's parents say they want for the suspect. reporting live in milbrae, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> time now is 6:32 police say they captured two criminals overnight who were stealing from other criminals. tear ya motherktvu's tara moriarty is live. good morning, , tara. >> the bottom of the building is a restaurant. police responded to the call on 12th avenue and 12th street. police found two men running from the scene. they confiscated more than 120 marijuana plants as well as some sophisticated growing equipment. the first suspect was apprehended as he tried jump a fence in the back. the second suspect was found on a nearby roof top. police sent their canine after

him and after not complying with police demands, the dog hit the suspect several time he was treated at the scene and taken to jail. we spoke to the first suspect after the arrest. >> i was smoking a cigarette. they came in and said, what are you doing? i said talking to my girlfriend and that's all that happened. >> reporter: again, police came out to this aledged pot house two years ago, around the same time, when two men were trying to break in and steal marijuana. a lot of similarity between the two cases and police say it is extremely frustrating. they told us that they are having to waste valuable time and resources on basically the same crime. this comes on the heels of the recent layoffs of dozens of oakland police officers a single engine plane registerd to a sunny vale

crashed killing all four people on board. it was headd from boulder back to california. the plane was so badly damaged and burned that they could not identify even the plane or how many people were on board at first. they were later able to identify it and connect it to the sunny vale registration. let's go to sal who has opinion pretty busy today. i know you are watching the east bay. >> that's right. we are stating there, dave and pam because of traffic getting a little bit busier here. a little bit farther south -- i'm going to put this on the map for you. 880, we had word of a stalled vehicle that could start causing some slow traffic traffic. you don't see a lot of yellow and red there, which is good. we are hoping that, today on

machetes, more that 100 marijuana plants and some cash. we act as a determs for those that may be on parole, supervision, so that they won't engage in this kind of activity and it oftentimes lead to the 'tis coverry of other crimes being connected. now, they are able to track many of the toll parolees with the help of new ankle bracelets like these equipped with a gps system. police arrested a 15-year- old boy for indesent exposure. the boy was on a bicycle and rode by a mother and her daughters without wearing any pants. the boy was booked into the county's juvenile dissension center. two people are under arrest in solano county in connection with a fire that police say was

permanently ceiling -- permanently sealing that oil well could be finish today and al-qaeda has a new chief of global operations and it's a man who has lived more for than 15 years right here in the united states. counter terrorism experts say thinks the first time a leader with so much knowledge of american society has been put in charge of planning terrorist attacks. police are launching a pilot program to improve safety on muni following a string of violent crimes. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in san francisco with details of the new program. good morning. they are called community ambassadors and their role toys serve as liaison between the people who ride muni and the police we are at the 4th street and king muni rail shop and this is one of places where you may find one of these ambassadors. they will be riding the muni

line. the community ambassadors have been training with san francisco police for the past two weeks. they are paid as civilian workers, not police officers. they are not armed. we talked to some muni riders who say they have even these ambassadors and they made a difference. >> we saw them with yellow vests on. some people were trying to get on and could not get on. he asked to help a person with bags. i find that strange because normally they don't talk to people. that's a good idea but if push came to shove, they have no enforcement power, no weapons. there is not much they can do. sometimes, you have a large group of people causing troubling. >> the 12 ambassadors in the program speak seven different languages between them. they were introduced to the community friday. they are as iting canned with

helping the community with language assistance and tips. this is in response to violent attacks that happened in recent months. the funding for the program comes from the city's jobs now program funding coming from the federal government stimulus. that funding is supposed to run out mid-september. however, city leaders are looking for other revenue sours so they can keep the ambassador program going beyond that. allie rasmus, ktvu u.s. army helicopters flew their first relief missions to flood-ravaged areas of pakistan. 800 people were air liftd to safety. they were stranded in a northwest tourist town. not soon rains there caused some of the worst floodings in decades. homes have been destroyed, roads and bridges. hundreds of thousands are still trapped without shelter, food or electricity. the government says 1500 people have been killed, more than 3

million more are affected by this. back here in the u.s. and missouri, two teenagers were killed when two school buses and two trucks collided near st. louis. the buses were carrying high school band to an amusement park. they slammed into a freeway wreck that happened right in front of them involving a big rig and a pickup truck. that pickup truck was crashed. its 19-year-old driver was killed along with a student riding in one of the buses. a french tourist is recovering after falling the 'em of the grand canyon. wins say that the 18-year-old was taking pictures around the rim when he slipped and fell 75 feet. paramedics went in and stable lied him before he could be air lifted out. the map has ankle, wrist and

neck injuries. san francisco's historic trans bay terminal will close for good. the bus terminal on first and mission streets is soon to be demolished to make way for a new $4 billion traps bay transit center. commuters will still be able to catch buses at a temporary terminal which goes into operation tomorrow morning. just a couple of blocks away on howard and main streets. the new terminal has to be completed in about seven years. 6:48 is the time right now. let's check in now with sal where are you starting now, sal? >> in the east bay now, my dear woman, pam cook and dave clark. >> thank you, sal. >> northbound 101 coming up through san jose, a little bit of slowing, i'm afraid. no major problems on the way to the san jose airport. this is a look at 880 southbound. we had a couple of problems.
