well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm claudine wong. tori campbell has the day off. it's friday, august 6th. well, in the news for you right now, oakland police are investigating a possible burglary. while they were investigating a possible burglary, they found pot-growing operation overnight. tara moriarty is live with a look at why this particular case is particularly frustrating for authorities. >> reporter: apparently neighbors called in a burglary here around 12:30 this morning. sure enough, when police arrived, they spotted some prowlers, running from what look like a restaurant. according to officials, the restaurant is located on the bottom floor of the building and in a legal marijuana -- and an illegal marijuana growing operation is at the top. we are at near i-880.

police found more than 120 points as well as harvested marijuana and growing equipment. authorities say two men were trying to escape from the ba of the building. the first was caught right away as he tried to hurdle a fence. the other went toward the rooftop. they actually had to send a k-9 after him and he was bit. this is the second time police have made a pot bust here in the last couple of year. both cases are strikingly similar. police say this is frustrated. valuable resources are being wasted on the same crime. no street value on the marijuana. but we did see two big garbage bags of marijuana being tossed away. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:02. thank you, tara.

a single-engine plane has crashed in colorado killing all three on board. a beechnut plane was flying in southwest boulder on wednesday. that plane was headed back from boulder to california. investigators say the plane was so badly damaged and burned that they initially struggled to identify the plane and could not initially confirm how many people were on board. they were able to eventually connect it to a sunnyvale location. the victims' names are not being made public until residents have been notified the cause of the crash is under investigation. police have relatived one of two stabbing suspects -- arrested one of two stabbing suspects. kraig doe bro -- kraig debro has more. >> reporter: police last night took one suspect in custody. we learned that suspect actually surrendered in this case. there are witnesses to this case. and those witnesses may have

identified them. this is all happening when the parents of the victim were ready to forgive their son's siller. they -- killer. they believe two are to blame. >> so there's forgiveness? >> oh, yeah. >> we would rather have them turn around their lives. >> we have too many good memories and too many good things to think about. there's no room for hate or -- or feelings of revenge. >> reporter: take a look at this. it looks like just a police car rolling down the street but police say there's somebody in the back of that squad car. that's one of the suspects. the suspect who turned himself in last night. they say the 20-year-old has spoken to investigators but police would not say what he told them. police say several people actually witnessed the stabbing. it happened wednesday night at

the tennis courts at mills high school in millbrae around 11:30. according to police, a fight led up to the killing. police would not say what started the fight. a published word says jared refused a request for a cigarette from one of the suspects. his parents say he was starting to mature and they were looking forward to that maturity in the next few years. they also say he was planning to go on a mission in connection with his religious liefs. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. 7:05. berkeley police want your help this morning. they are trying to find a developmentally disabled woman first reported missing more than a year ago. i want to show you a picture of 33-year-old heather bloom. police say they tried to check living with a home where she her sister.

they were told she was doing okay but they weren't allowed to see her or even go in the house. police say the sister has recently moved away and they want to make sure she's okay. she's a foe -- here is a photo. she's wheelchair bound. today is another important day in the contentious legal battle over proposition 8 and same-sex marriage. federal judge vaughn walker will return on wednesday. the lawyers on both sides have until today to hand in written arguments on whether the judge should allow those marriages to go ahead while the matter is on appeal. the judge's decision is expected in the next week or two. county clerks here throughout the bay area say they are ready to start issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples if judge walker lifts

the temporary stay. in contra costa county, the clerk recorder says he has extra volunteers on call to perform marriage ceremonies if the judge lifts the stay and if there is a rush by same-sex couples who want to get married. now, we have complete coverage of the plop proposition 8 legal battle at our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. when the judge makes his decision on that stay, we'll post that on line as well. 7:06. it's a big event in san jose this weekend for people interested in medical marijuana. for the first time ever, a cannabis convention is coming to the south bay. organizers are promising an educational event with a full weekend of seminars and presentations, plus hundreds of exhibits. the convention will be held at the san jose's convention center's south hall on market street. it kicks off at 2:00 this afternoon and runs until sunday for people who are interested. sal's watching the whole

commute, including the south bay. >> that's right, dave and claudine. right now, traffic in the south bay is getting a little bit busy on highway 101 northbound. you can see there is a little bit of stop-and-go traffic here on northbound 101. northbound 280 at winchester there was a crash. northbound 280 at 101 in san jose, there is a wooden pallet in the lane. we'll see if there's an actual crashor if it's just slow traffic. moving along and looking at 237, that's light, which is pretty good here for a friday or any day for it to be this light in the! at this hour. if you are at the toll plaza, also still pretty light here trying to get into the city. here's steve. >> thank you, sal. good morning to you al >> we have low clouds way out there again. as i've been saying all week long, if the low clouds make it, to santa rosa to san jose, livermore, concord, you know we

can't get that warm. that's a strong push and that's exactly what's happened again. now, farther out, you can get some sunshine but there is even a sea breeze. the low overcast is definitely there. it's lifted a little bit yesterday. so that allowed cooling to take place. but still temperatures remain average, below average. they've been below average for months in a row. there's really no sign of any heat. inland areas stay in the 70s to low and mid-80s. big, ole low in the pacific northwest. i don't usually say that in august. but that's what's happening. low clouds, sunny, breezy. draw your attention to, if you are puttering around the house or getting ready, if you were here in 19 3 -- 1993 all of the records were set except for san

jose. 40s up in the mountains but the afternoon highs are warm. they were warm to hot, mid-80s, upper 80s. sacramento, upper 80s. record low maximum temperatures, again, up and dunn the coast in -- down the coast in southern california as well. the low is controlling our weather. it enhances it. so the pattern we had in march pretty much, april, may, june, july has carried right into august. that means the low clouds and fog, some local drizzle but it stays cool. low clouds, sunny, breezy. chilly to warm. highs from the 60s to near 70. oakland was only 63 yesterday. today, not much warmer, 65.

70s and low to mid-80s in the inland areas unless you are far away from the fog bank. more fog cooler. we'll take that into the weekend. >>7:10. well, one of the most active volcanos in indonesia erupted early today and left several people badly injured. we're keeping an eye on what happened over there. take a look at some of the pictures if we have them. this is the area we are talking about. they have names i won't even try to pronounce. but this volcano spewed lava and hot ash hundreds of yards into the air. at least four villagers are reported missing there. the last eruption was in july of 2006. that forced the evacuation of almost 4,000 people. 7:11. new jobless figures are out this morning. coming up, we're gonna tell you what they mean in terms of the

this noshing the labor department released the latest jobless numbers. ktvu channel 2 reporter alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom to tell us what all of these numbers mean. >> reporter: good morning. we brought you the numbers as breaking news at 5:30. economists are describing this as a weak jobs report for july. let's take a closer look.

overall, 1 1,000 jobs -- 131,000 jobs were lost in the united states. most of them temporary census jobs. but private employers added 70,000 jobs. the rate remains the same at 9.7%. a hearing report got underway on capitol hill about 45 minutes ago. republicans are seizing on it to criticize president obama. >> at this point, it will take most of the decade to return back to normal levels. despite the promises, consumer confidence has failed. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:15. well, bp is moving on to that final phase of permanently sealing up that oil well in the

gulf of mexico. the crews finished pumping cement into the well, pushing the oil down to underground source. once the cement sets which will probably happen today, the final step begins and that involves drilling the last 100 feet a relief well, which will connect to the broken well and then follow oil up to a tanker. all of this should be completed by the middle of august. well, adults are apparently not the only oning feeling the stresses of that -- ones feeling the stresses of that oil spill. a new survey shows mental problems. that includes acting depressed or nervous or having problems sleeping. the survey says many households have experienced a drop in their income since the oil spill and that probably adds to the anxiety of the children. 7:16. the fbi says a suspected al qaeda operative who lived for more than 15 years in the u.s. has now become chief of al

qaeda's global operation. fbi counterterrorism experts say the 35-year-old man has taken over a position once held by the 9/11 mastermind, khalid sheik muhammed. muhammed. today, president obama hosts a white house reception, celebrating the confirmation of elena kagan as the newest member of the u.s. supreme court. kagan was confirmed by the u.s. senate yesterday. she will be sworn in tomorrow by chief justice john roberts. now, with kagan on the high court, it will be the first time ever that three women have served on the u.s. supreme court at the same time. the senate judiciary committee unanimously approved melinda hague to be the new u.s. attorney for northern california. president obama nominated her to the boast earlier this year,

replacing the current u.s. attorney, joe rusinelana. she currently works for a law firm. ms. hague must still be confirmed by the full senate. one of president obama's economic advisers is leaving the white house to return to teaching. she's the chairwoman of the white house council of economic advisers. the white house issued a statement citing family commitments for the reap. she plans to go -- to return. well, hip-hop artist bayou clef -- wyclef jean is running for haiti. >> one of the reasons i don't

welcome back. a federal judge gave the go- ahead to round up wild horses in california next week. now, animal rights activists tried to delay a roundup. the roundup is set to take place in the far northeastern part of california. in santa cruz, sheriff's deputies have been document meanting the number of -- documenting the system of homeless. city and county officials, as well as the sheriff's department are reportedly working on the plan on how and what to do about this continuing demonstration.

7:23. caltrans contractors are going to begin carving out the fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel on monday. crews are gonna use a 54-foot digging machine with a rotating cutter to begin the work on highway 24 between orinda. a new free shuttle service is up and running in oakland. it will operate from 7:00 to 7:00 p.m. ac transit is operating the new service and officials hope it will bring more people into downtown oakland. 7:24. let's get you to where you need to go. sal, how is the east bay looking? >> looking pretty good, dave and claudine. the few days we've had the busier traffic so it's a nice break to have starting today, least, a little bit of easy traffic here on interstate 880

near the coliseum. we're not sure it will stay this way for much longer. but we'll take it. westbound, the traffic is moving along well. it seems like the middle of winter thing, yeah. i don't know. highway 101 southbound, it look pretty good down the peninsula. a little bit the slow traffic on highway 92. let's talk to steve. >> i just received a tweet, turning the heat around, it's foggy and cold. >> isn't that the truth? >> yes, for many. for some, you like this kind of weather. i do. it feels good. i'm not on the coast. we do have a lot of low clouds and fog and temperatures are very cool. in fact, 50 at san rafael. redwood city you're the warmest at 57. that's not very warm, fog, sunny, breezy, windy. not as windy as yesterday morning but 52 in san francisco. no no doubt about it.

there is a plan to increase safety on muni's lines -- muni's lines. allie rasmus is live with a look at protection that ambassadors will provide. >> reporter: good morning. the role of the ambassadors is to serve as a liaison. this line is one of the lines that the community ambassadors will be riding. they will also be on the san bruno trains. they will be 0 the lines in the early morning and evening hours. this program was formed in response to several attacks that have happened on muni in the last several months. most victims were elderly and members of the chinese-speaking

community. ambassadors will provide safety concerns, and any concerns they have. >> this will hopefully bring the community together and help those who cannot speak english maybe. >> i think more people would be more relaxed to catch that service. they need that. >> reporter: there are 1 ambassadors in the program. they speak seven different languages between them. they were introduced to the community at a press conference. they've been training with the san francisco police for the last few weeks. they are paid as civilians, not police officers so so they are not armed. >> i just hope nobody get hurt. a lost people don't want to listen to people if they are not wearing a badge or have a gun. i out just hope they will be safe -- i just hope they will

be safe. >> reporter: the funding comes from the jobs now program and that program is paid for by federal stimulus money. the money runs out in mid- september. they are looking to find other revenue sources to keep this program going. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, allie. well, this morning, day two of a four-day event is happening right now. they are trying to help needy, displaced and homeless veterans. this is what's happening out there this very moment. you get the idea. the alameda county fairgrounds in pleasanton. this is what the east bay sounddown is, as they call it. right now they are getting ready to east breakfast. there's the breakfast table. this event will offer food, fresh clothing, healthcare, employment services to needy

veterans. this goes on through sunday. the organizers are hoping to help as many as 500 veterans. the pets that belong to those homeless vets are getting a standdown of their own at the trivalley animal rescue in dublin. today they will be treated to veterinary care everything get some grooming. for dogs, that will happen at the alameda sheriff facility and for cats. that will take place at the spca. police uncovered a pot growing operation last night. tara moriarty has the details about what led officers to that scene. >> reporter: on the bottom floor is a restaurant but according to authorities and illegal pot form was growing. there is an open door up there and that's where allegedly the two suspects were tossing bags of marijuana from upstairs. neighbors realized what was going on and reported some prowlers.

sure enough, when officers arrived on 12th street and 12th avenue off interstate 880, that's what they found. two men running from the back and two large garbage bags full of marijuana. more than 120 plants and some harvested along with sophisticated growing equipment. police caught one suspect right way abut had to use the k-9 for the second spell. >> i was at the park smoking a cigarette. the guy just slammed me and said what are you doing? i said talking to my bro. >> reporter: this is the second time in two years police have responded to this particular growing operation. same situation, where burglars are trying to steal marijuana just after midnight. now police say they are frustrated with the recent layoffs and say valuable time and resources are being wasted on exactly the same crime. no word yet on the street value

of this marijuana. and if there's any connection between the restaurant and the illegal growing operation upstairs. we're live in oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. 7:34. today is sentencing day for a former san francisco city employee convicted of computer tampering. terry childs was found guilty back in april of locking out other employees. this happened two years ago. he's facing two to five years in prison. the city is asking him to may 1.5 million for restitution for trying to gain access to that network. the concord man charged in the dog mauling death of his 2- year-old grandson has entered a not guilty plea. the man faces several charges stemming from last month's deadly attack by three pit bulls. prosecutors have added a new

charge, child abuse rutting in death. after finding out that the dogs hit a pair rod, chihuahua -- parrot, and chihuahua as well. a more is underway in contra costa county to require pet bull -- pit bull owners to spay or neuter their pets. this man is offering this ordinance. >> this is to limit the already abundant population of pit bull type breeds and make our community safer. >> now, he says this could take effect as early as this coming fall if it's approved by the entire board of supervisors. the san francisco attorney

is seeking an injunction against two warring against two gain gaining -- two gangs. they will be prohibited from activities like loitering. they say they are responsible for ten murders along with other violence. 35-year-old mark anthony kandler was found guilty of seven felony charges. prosecutors say he tried to fill a member of a rival oakland gang. oakland police say this closes one of their most extensive investigations ever. he faces at least 40 years to life in prison when sentenced next month. 7:37. tonight at midnight, san francisco's historic transbay terminal will close for good. the bus terminal at first and mission is set to be torn down to make way for a new $4

let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. happy friday. it looks to be a cool weekend. weatherwise the fog has increased rapidly and it might burn off slightly earlier today but there's no sign of any warmup. even our extended models don't do much in the wake of any type of warmth. after that fog burns off, it's up around 1,000 feet. it was up around 1500. that gave us a little bit more mist and drizzle. that seems to have slacked off a little bit. but inland areas stay well below average. the coast is definitely there but the inland areas are taking the biggest drop on these temperatures. another low. i heap, the pattern just -- i mean, the pattern just dropped in. if this was november, december, january, february, we would have four months of rain.

gonna have to lug around a lot of heavy textbooks. the university instead is going to issue ipads to 91 first-year students during orientation later this month. it's all part of a trial program to give students better access to a huge amount of medical information that's being put out constantly. they will be looking at a cost savings between expensive printed textbooks to digital ones. the "san francisco business times" says kaiser permanente is looking for ways to cut their costs as they see enrollment shrink. kaiser expects to get lower reimbursement rates as the healthcare reform begins. kaiser says they also want to find ways to improve quality of care. 37% of kaiser members are right here in northern california. the largest company that makes cray ons is going --

crayons is going green. they installed a solar farm and plans to double the size. the panels will give enough energy to make 1 billion crayons a year. that's about a third of the company's total output. target discount stores are expanding in the east bay. they he closed a deal to buy ten acres on the east side of dublin. tact says theirs a big enough market to support all of the east bay stores, including the ones at west tub lin, san rah mown and livermore. two other stores will open next year. and target has now apologized for a political donation that led to calls for a store boycott. the company gave $150,000 to a group backing a conservative republican for governor of minnesota who opposes same-sex

marriage. now, target's ceo wrote to employees say the -- saying the company was genuinely sorry that that donation upset some people and they will review future donations. an a.i.d.s. discrimination court against google can go to trial. the 16-year-old was fired. he was called an old map and fuddy-duddy, he says. google says he was not fired because of his age and says it will prove it does not discriminate when this case goes to trial. marina county supervisors are being asked to give the go- ahead to scrap a system known as s.a.p., should be phased out and replaced as soon as possible. since there have been so many problems, a new system would be more efficient.

7:48. while condo development has stalled here in the bay area, one type of housing seems to be gaining momentum. the san francisco business times reports several large apartment complexes are gearing up in san francisco, in oakland and in noster city and walnut creek. that's because apartments were not overbilled. and with more and more -- overbuilt. and with more and more people losing their homes to foreclosures, the demands for apartments is expected to stay pretty high. a jury in the south bay awards a huge amount of money to a former foster care child. a man is arrested for what he said about the workplace shooting in connecticut where nine people were killed.

first served. the concert is absolutely free. a former foster care child will get $30 million for abuse he suffered while in a mountain view foster home. the jury said the child was the victim of more than 600 acts of sexual abuse from 1995 through 1999. the jury found the institute, which the state licensed to monitor that home, was 75% responsible. it also found that john hardy jackson, who ran that home, was 25% responsible. jackson was convicted in 2006 of more than a dozen heart attacks including -- dozen charges including lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14. in santa rosa, police arrested a 15-year-old boy for indecent exposure. they say the boy was on a bicycle and rode by a mother and her two daughters without any pants on. it happened on the santa rosa creek bicycle trail early yesterday afternoon. the boy was booked into the

juvenile detention center. police in vallejo are looking for 1 laptops stolen yesterday from m.i.t. academy. investigators say the suspects entered the school on positive place by forcing open an exterior door. once inside, they apparently broke a glass interior door to get to an office where the commuters were being kept. police say right now they've made no arrest. the attorneys in the criminal case against barry bonds will meet today. they are still trying to set a trial date. so far bonds's legal team, the prosecutor and the judge have not been able to set a definitive date for the trial to start. barry bonds has entered a plea of not guilty for lying to a grand jury back in 2003 when he denied that he knowingly took performance-enhancement drugs. let's go right back tout to -- back out to sal.

welcome back to "mornings on 2." one man is behind bars at this hour. in connection with the shooting death of a young millbrae man. kraig debro is at the police station live. i know you have new information about the suspect. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we got the name of one of the two suspects that -- right now that police want for this -- police here in millbrae wouldn't give it to us. we called the county jail and they gave us the name of the man booked into the jail late last night, early this morning on a homicide. we're gonna give you that name

right now. it's lum ohio. he's 20 years old. no city given. we got new video this morning video of the scene of the crime. the police have one of the two suspects they are looking for, that person is in custody. the homicide took place at mills high school. that's in millbrae. right next to the tennis courts. signs of the aftermath are still visible on the ground on the asphalt path between a bench. police say 20-year-old jared was stabbed several times and died at the scene. several witnesses saw what happened but the victim's parents may never really know why. >> just want to know just want to know what happened to my son. >> reporter: police say the killers stabbed him during a night. a public report says the fight started after jarrett declined a request for a cigarette.

he died wednesday night around 11:30. his parents say he would have just gotten out of his four- hour auto mechanic class. they didn't know he would be stopping off on the way home from school. >> why my jarrett? so easy going. a loyal friend. >> reporter: now, th is video of one of the suspects being driven to the county jail. if you look at the car, it look like a squad car. but the man is in back of the car, police tell you, just ducking down. an officer here in millbrae tells us this morning that the suspect actually surrendered last night. police say he's 20 years old like the victim. they say the suspect has given a statement to police. they didn't tell us what it was and they are still looking for a second suspect. again, we got the name of the first suspect booked into the county jail last night after millbrae police stopped him off on charges of a 1 7. that's a homicide. he's 20 years old. now in the county jail.

help suspend crime in oakland. >> reporter: they are called ambassador. they will be on trains here behind me that you see. this drain you are looking at is a t-third street train. that's un-- that's one of the trains that the community ambassadors will be on. they will be also riding the 9 san bruno line. now, this program was formed in response to several violent attacks that have happened on muni in the past few months. several of those victims were elderly and members of the city's chinese-speaking community. the ambassadors' role is to provide riders with safety tips, interpreters, language assistance or any concerns they have. some people we spoke with have already noticed the community ambassadors on the train. >> we saw them with the yellow vest on.

a federal judge gave the go- ahead to round up wild horses next week. animal rights activists tried to delay the roundup and say they will appeal the ruling. this coming monday, caltrans will start carving out the fourth bore of the caldecott it uple. you are not dreaming. they will bring in a 54-foot long digging machine with a rotating cover to start the work on highway 24 between orinda and oakland. the fourth bore is expected to be finished in late 2013. and something new. a free shuttle service, up and running in oakland. it's free. broadway shuttle operates weekdays between jack london square and grant avenue between 7:00 in the moving and 7:00 -- until 7:00:00 p.m. this is paid for by clean air

welcome back. oakland police are investigating a possible burglary uncovered at a pot growing operation. ktvu's tara moriarty is in oakland with new information about this overnight bust. >> reporter: we have with with's just learned the -- we've just learned the street

value of this mile-per-hour. there were apparently 600 plants found. that would put the estimate at about $250,000. where this was discovered. the back door, that's where the suspects were tossing bags of marijuana from upstairs. neighbors realized what was going on. they called police and reported prowlers and sure enough, when officers arrived on 12th street and 12th avenue off interstate 0, that's what they found. two men running from the back and two large garbage bags full of marijuana. more than 600 plants and some harvested. along with sophisticated growing equipment. police caught cun suspect -- caught one suspect right away. we spoke to the first suspect after officers arrested him. >> i was at the park smoking a cigarette. my friend was gonna get me.

faces charges from last month's attack. prosecutors added a new charge -- child abuse resulting in death because his pit bulls killed a parrot and akita dog and a chihuahua before the dilling -- killing of his grandson. they say if he's convicted on all of the charges he could get as much as ten years in prison. now, in the wake of that drug mauling death, a move is underway to contra costa county to require pit pull owners to spay or neuter their pets. a supervisor is work working on this that's similar to another one. he says pit bulls seem to be less aggressive when they are fixed. >> the reason for this is to eliminate the already abundant population of pit bull type breeds and too make sure community safer. >> the supervisor says this

could take effect as early as this fall if approved by the board of supervisors. the san francisco city attorney is seeking an injunction against two warring gaining to -- gangs to help keep peace in the neighborhood. herrera filed these injunctions yesterday. herrera say the two gangs are responsible for at least ten murders in the past three years along with other violence. 8:37. well, tonight at midnight, san francisco's historic transbay terminal will close for good. the bus terminal at 1st and mission is about to be turned down to make way for a $4 billion transbay transit center. you will still be able to catch buses at a south bay terminal. that starts tomorrow at howard and main streets. the new terminal is scheduled to be completed in about seven reese. 8:8. let's head out to sal castanedo
