their presence in bay area cities that are are losing police officers. the head of the guardian angels says that a city such as vallejo and oakland tightening their belts, the city streets need them now more than ever. >> it's going to be up to us to get them qualified and trained and out there in their red berreits. it's like starting confrontations, but if we have to we'll have to step up and arrest somebody if they're breaking the law. but the angels have a controversial history here to tensions with city leaders the use of force. the patrols come a day after san francisco launched a community embassadors program. san francisco police officials refused to comment on the

angels role. >> the guardians angels are not a panasia. some residents of san francisco's tenderloin district today welcomed the patrols. >> it'll stop a whole lot of problems with them out here patrolling the streets. >> reporter: guardian angels leaders conducted use of force training in this south of market park this afternoon. about 200 guardian angels from around the world came to the two day convention which continues through tomorrow. reporting now in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel two news. california's governor and attorney general are both calling for same-sex marriages to resume. u.s. district judge walker has given attorneys on both sides until today to submit arguments about whether he should allow same-sex marriages while the ruling is appealed. governor arnold schwarzenegger and attorney general jerry brown filed their own motions today asking the judge to let

the marriages happen. hewlet packerd ceo has resigned today upon allegations of sexual harassment. an investigation found that herd did not violate the company's sexual harassment policy as accused by a contractor but that other company standards were violated. the company's chief financial officer will lead hp while a economy looks for a new ceo. a former san fran san francisco city worker will spend four years in state prison for hacking the city's computer system. 45-year-old terry childs of pittsburgh was a network engineer when he locked city officials out of the city's main computer system for two weeks back in 2008. in april he was convicted of felony computer disk tampering. childs will return to court on august 13th to address the

issue of restitution. a somerville man has been identified as the pilot of a plane crash. investigators are looking into the cause. ktvu's maureen naylor spoke to some of the couples neighbors. >> reporter: today we learned that plane was supposed to land here at san jose international airport. in the last few hours we got information about john howard. he is the sunny vale man who was piloting the case. he was certified to be a flight instructor. on this tree lined suburban street all was quiet. they and one other person were killed wednesday when a single engine plane crashed. 35miles away from the bolder municipal airport. >> i'm so sorry to hear about it. because we've just always just been, you know friendly, you

know high pat, hi john and that was it. >> reporter: authorities identified the victims today at 70-year-old john howard and 56- year-old catherine hergorin. the three were on board howard's plane. authorities say the group had been visiting hegorin's family in colorado. >> i'm shocked about hearing it. >> just a quiet person, yeah. >> reporter: neighbors say howard spend decades in this home where he raised two daughters. >> they put this beautiful garden in, and i know they are very people loving. >> reporter: and john howard rented a hanger here at the airport for the past 23 years for his plane. tomorrow ntsb investigators will return to the plane crash in hopes of determining the cause of the crash. maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. a bay area soldier presumed

dead during world war ii is now on his way home tonight to his final resting place. family members say 20-year-old sergeant john bonosio was in the army air corp. when his plane was shot down. the crash site wasn't escavated until five years ago. his sister helped in finding the site. >> she found the site of the plane crash and even came back with a piece of his uniform, which is extraordinary to us. today marks 65 years since the u.s. dropped an atomic bomb on the japanese city of

himself in last night. investigators say the two men knew each other and were involved in a dispute over a woman. investigators say they located a second person who is a witness over the attack. the witness is expectedded to be interviewed sometime next week. valley meat company is recalling beef that was sold under safeway and other labels here in california, texas, and arizona and internationally. it was processed between october 2nd 2009 and august 12th of this year. fears of e.coli have people taking precautions when it comes to handling food. >> you should always wash, even though they tell you it's been washed. >> reporter: valley meat company released a statement today saying they are investigating the matter thoroughly and plan to better

evaluate their safety standards. for a list of all of the products impacted. be sure to visit our website ktvu.com and click on the bay area news tab. despite health officials declaring an epidemic, the number of whopping cough cases in california continue to grow. there are twice as many whopping cough cases in california than a year ago. officials say they are working to get more people vaccinated against whooping cough. the good news is officials expect the illness to level off soon. so i think we're doing everything we can to try to see that. i'm fully confident that within a matter of weeks we should see some leveling off and decrease in activity. seven deaths from whopping cough have been reported this year, all of the victims were infants. bay area commuters are in for a big change this week end. plus -- >> reporter: your weekend is here, the weather, it's not that warm, but there are some changes coming.

there are now just six hours left before san francisco's transbay terminal will be boarded up. so a new $4.2 billion facility can be built. the last bus slated to leave the terminal is right after midnight. today homeless teams are relocating the last homeless living there. the transbay transit center is expected to open in seven years. monday morning a huge drilling machine will start work on the long awaited fourth

toward the ferry building, temperatures today where about where they were yesterday. temperatures tomorrow are going to be about the same. just a pattern that is not shifting very rapidly. what you have today is what you're going to have saturday, basically a little cooler and what you're going to have sunday. clouds in the morning, a pretty early burn off, hayward, freemont 10:00, 11:00. it'll be slightly cooler yesterday, but these are subtle changes. coastal fog is one heck of a constant. it will not be going away very soon. there might be some burn off spots, but this low pressure center is going to ensure that the fog is a player not this weekend, just this weekend but right into next week as well. so we'll look at the fog forecast tomorrow morning. there it is. you can see that's the coverage. that's all nine bay area counties have some fog. then partly to mostly sunny by lunchtime for everybody. expect to downtown san san francisco and the avenues.

unchanged at 9.5% in july. 120,000 jobs were lost, private employers highed 71,000 people. 200,000 jobs must be created each month before we'll see the unemployment rate improve. the jobs report prompted a slight retreat on wall street today, experts say investors are concerned the nation's economic recovery is weakening and they're wondering if the nation could fall into a recession once again. the nasdaq was off a little more than 4.5 points. in sacramento it has now been day 37 into the budget impasse and it appears negotiations are at a standstill. there were no sessions scheduled for today. so lawmakers left sacramento early to start their week end. earlier in the week, governor arnold schwarzenegger met with leaders, but spent today talking to business owners. democrats want to raise taxes

while republicans are calling for more cuts. california is facing a $19 billion budget deficit. in an exhibition that is a possible preview of the america's cup. a british yacht team today defeated the team sponsored by ellison. the oracle team lost the competition. it is the current america's cup champion. coming up here, attorneys take another swing at a trial date from barry bonds federal perjury trial. when the trial is expected to begin.

the federal perjury trial of former giants star barry bonds is scheduled to begin on march 21st of next year. the trial was delayed when prosecutors appealed and eventually lost. bonds has pleaded not guilty to charges of lying to a grand jury about alleged drug use. and mark is here now with sports, almost can't talk

enough about jerry rice. >> when you go into the hall of fame, usually happens just once unless you go into the bay area sports hall of fame. the two headlines act that will go in officially tomorrow at canton ohio honored today. that will be emmitt smith and jerry rice, they got to ring in the opening of the stock market. take a look. now they were in canton ohio but they did it via satellite to wall street. jerry rice and emmitt smith two adversaries during their playing careers. today jerry says he's getting the butterflies about game time tomorrow. >> listening to all these legends, i mean, i mean those guys really drove home what it means to be in the hall of fame and how you have to represent the hall of fame, so you know i'm excited about tomorrow, i'm a little nervous.
