wheeled away on a stretcher. ktvu has learned he is a homicide suspect and led officers on a chase for three hours beginning in alameda county. the chase ended at this location this bay point when the man refused to get out of his car. ktvu news is told he threatened to commit suicide. we're working on gathering more information and we'll have the latest as soon as we get it. he is a priest with a past. tonight people in alameda are stunned to learn their neighbor is a former catholic priest who is now facing multiple counts of sexual abuse. rita williams is in the newsroom tonight with more on this. rita? >> reporter: well, frank authorities are attempting to extradite a former catholic priest from the bay area to his native ireland to stand trial on charges of sex abuse there more than 30 years ago. >> he doesn't seem to be that kind of a person. he seems pretty much to be to himself. he has a lady friend.

>> reporter: long-time resident leo dederman said for a decade he lived quietly here at the end of a cul-de-sac next to a lagoon in alameda working to a nearby senior citizens center. he worked at churches in eureka and sacramento. did he ever say he was a former priest? >> no. no. i guess i'm not surprised because he is a nice person. >> reporter: irish authorities allege that between 1973 and '81, mccabe committed what they call indecent assault with six boys sages 11 to 14 -- ages 11 to 14. the official claims apparently did not surface till 1988 when the boys were men. >> most kids who are abused don't say anything for an average of 25 years. >> reporter: joey says he knows firsthand. he won a civil suit four years

ago against another priest for sexually abusing piscatelli when he was a boy in richmond. >> obviously the practice of the catholic church was to shuffle predators. >> here in the united states, if that's all they have, i would think they have a tough case. >> reporter: his attorney will go to court and try to get him released on bond. the now 74-year-old mccabe has been held the past week and his attorney says he's seriously ill. >> this old man should not be forced to be deteriorating physically in jail. >> reporter: now if sent back and convicted of all the charges against him, patrick mccabe could spend up to ten years in an irish prison. reporting live from the newsroom, eat pa williams, k -- rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. the sports organization u.s.a. swimming is facing another sexual abuse lawsuit tonight claiming that the group did

nothing about complaints a second south bay swim coach was allegedly molesting athletes. a woman alleges her coach sexually abused her beginning at age 15. the coach was never charged and left the area. the victim is now 28 years old [ inaudible ] usa swimming does everything it can to protect its image, its coaches and ignores the swimmers who eventually turn into victims. >> u.s.a. swimming is facing a similar legal action in connection with andrew king, a former coach convicted of molesting young swimmers in the south bay and east bay. u.s.a. swimming declined to comment on this case. investigators say more test results are theodoreed before any more arhees can be made in the death after german tourist this weekend in san francisco's union square area. 50-year-old woman was shot and killed by a stray bullet fired

during a gun battle outside a party. two other people were injured. an 18-yard man was arrested and released last night after prosecutors determined there was not enough evidence to press charges. a castro valley family tonight is trying to recover and ill dog stole frn their home this week. robert cassidy says he came home friday afternoon to find parts of his home ransacked and valuables missing. but he says his one-year-old bishon frise mix lulu was also taken. she requires medication for a liver condition. >> the dogs are trendy. they can be perceived as expensive. you know, there's income in it for them and/or, you know, if it's a younger person, they can rationalize giving it to their girlfriend as a gift. >> the alameda county sheriff's department says it is investigating about eight other robberies in that area recently. it is day 42 without a

state budget. and lawmakers of sacramento are still locking horns over how to solve the crisis and spur economic growth. one idea proposed by democratic leaders is to set aside $300 million to help small businesses primarily through loans. however, republicans say that money would come from new taxes which would actually hurt business owners and californians. meanwhile state workers are boycotting the new action film "the expendables" which feature as brief appearance by the governor. a spokesman says the governor did it as a favor for the director sylvester stallone. >> he needs to be taking care of business in sacramento regardless if he has a 30- second role. it was a role nonetheless and you shouldn't be doing that with the conditions he's put the state of california in. >> they go back a long way. he's happy to help his friend out. again, it only cost him a couple hours on a saturday several months ago. so certainly didn't get in the way of his duties as governor. >> state workers plan to picket theaters and inform moviegoers about the governor's plan to

furlough and cut their pay. thousands of people are used to work at the plant in free month have been out of work since april when the plant closed but today they all got a chance to meet with employers at a special job fair set up just for ex-workers. robert honda is live in pleasanton to show us how things went today glb frank, there was almost a festive mood at times here at the alameda county fair grounds as thousands of former workers came to the special job fair that at times felt like a reunion, a very crowded reunion. >> there were rhines out the door as about 3,000 former employee, suppliers and vendors came looking for work. >> i weants to quality assurance. i came here today hoping to look for something in the field of quality. >> anything that's still open, available to me, anything that's open i'm going to take a

job. >> reporter: organizers say they waited till today to set up a job fair to give the former workers time to learn how to write resumes and interview for jobs in other fields. >> they start in terms of what we call human my speak. >> reporter: not surprisingly many people met with the electric car company that bought the plant. >> we're going to try to find a home for most of them but we're not a 5,000-person company. >> reporter: some job seekers are a little gun shy about returning to the plant. >> what i'm trying to do is just to get into a new profession that's going to not move on me or shut down. i've been through three plant closures now. this was the last. >> reporter: tefla is hiring. the company is looking for maintenance and facility workers first. fair organizers say they plan to track how many people find jobs and organizers hope to set up another similar fair in october. live in pleasanton, robert

honda, ktvu channel 2 news. economic worries sent stocks into the red for the year although word that the federal reserve was going to buy up government debt calmed investors yesterday. today it sparked a sell-off as they worried about what that meant for the economy's future. the dow jones dropped 265 points. the nasdaq lost 68 points. well, -- wells fargo says it will appeal a court order to give more than $2 million in overdraft fees back to customers. the san francisco-based bank lost a class action lawsuit yesterday. they say the federal judge got his facts wrong. he ruled wells fargo uses unfair manipulation to get more overdraft fees. it is accused of posting the largest debit card purchases first to increase chances of a customer overdraft. many banks reportedly post smaller transactions first. a new list is out designating nearly two dozen bay area waterways as polluted and state water experts say the biggest problem is trash.

ktvu's maureen is live tonight in downtown san jose with more on what waterways made the list and also what's being done to solve the problem. maureen? >> reporter: frank, this is the first time the state has used garbage to determine the status after waterway and this river is one of several in the bay area deemed polluted because of trash. water is still flowing and wildlife frolicking in the guadalupe river, one of 24 bay area waterways added to the state water resources list of polluted waterways. >> i was just looking down at the creek right by the water works, the old water works. why isn't there just somebody cleaning this up. >> it's not a surprise that they're on there. >> reporter: carol frederickson with the santa clara valley water district says attach has been a big problem in some county waterways. even with the 2000 ballot measure voters passed to allocate more money for cleanup and restoration. >> we're doing the best we can. the voters have funded our trash cleanups that we're

doing. they do appreciate it when we go out there and do it and, you know, we'll continue to do it. >> reporter: the other santa clara waterways to make the least were permanente creerk, stevens creek, saratoga creek and coyote creek. the water district says the most common issue is wrappers and plastic bottles. the santa clara creeks coalition says a growing homeless population has left its negative mark. >> we have a lot more homeless living near the creek than we have in the past. each year it gets bigger. as it gets bigger, more and more you find there's trash building up in the creeks. >> reporter: he says a county attach task force is preparing a new crackdown but acknowledges that the problem continues despite morage cleanups. and for a full list of the polluted waterways report, you can can go to our website ktvu.com and click on the web links section. reporting live in downtown san jose, ktvu channel 2 news.

san francisco drivers just got a break at the parking meter. the city's municipal transportation agency has decided to shelf an idea to charge for parking on sundays. right now parking is free in the city on sundays. but the agency did a study on the idea as a way to partially offset its multimillion dollar budget deficit. the idea, though, drew criticism from merchants, drivers and even from mayor gavin newsom. why some ferry riders may see a major increase in their fares. safety changes are coming to high school baseball in california. changes that can be linked to the injury of a high school student in ma marin. there were places inland today that did not see the sunshine. that is unusual for summer. i'll have your forecast coming up. those popular bounce houses, they sure are a lot of fun for children but could they pose a health threat? details on a lawsuit filed today by california's attorney

>> a near life threatening injury for a bay area high school pitcher is prompting change across the state. new rules will require high school baseball teams to follow new safety standards for the metal bats they use. ken pritchett is live in sacramento with more on the new standards. >> reporter: begunner sanburg is still recovering from his injuries but his ordeal may have had a significant impact on safety in high school baseball starting next year across california. he was in a coma that lasted three weeks. he was struck in the head by a line drive baseball. five months later and he was at the state capitol at a press conference to promote safety in the sport he loves.

>> i have had a long road and i was really excited to come here today just to raise the awareness of what has happened and what the future will be. >> reporter: the ball that hit him was hit by an aluminum bat and today he joined assemblyman announcing the governing body will announce new safety standard as year late gler this agreement is the best possible outcome because it's done by them voluntarily and we've accelerated that action to take place immediately in the coming school year. >> reporter: huffman dropped his bill that would have put a one-year moratorium on the use of aluminum bats which some consider more dangerous than wooden bats. instead aluminum bats must meet new safety standards and regulators will encourage the use of safety headgear like this. >> we're also getting itself headgear and getting it for softball as well as baseball. >> reporter: the headgear is not widely used and fairly new technology that could be

mandatory by 2012. sandburg says he'll wear it when he returns to the diamond. >> next year i'm hoping to play shortstop and from there we'll see what happens. >> reporter: critics of the bill that would have put a one- year moratorium on the use of aluminum bats in high school baseball say that it would have been too expensive for schools. this new agreement ultimately will save schools money. in sacramento, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. the state of california and center for environmental health filed a lawsuit aimed at getting the lead out of those inflatable bounce houses. it comes after an investigation found lead levels more than 70 times the federal limit in some of the houses. the lead is apparently in the vinyl used to make the bounce houses. experts say not everyone of those -- not every one of those houses is unsafe but parents are concerned. >> it's really bad actually because like i said, you know, that's something that kids are attracted to and that's, you

know, all they do. >> the lawsuit names eight bounce house manufacturers. one of them told ktvu news i is work -- news he is working to address the problem. groundbreaking ceremonies marked the official start of construction for the new transbay transit center. the are in is officially designated -- the center is officially designated as the first high speed rail station anywhere in the country in a -- and a complex intended to serve 11 different transit agencies. the first phase of the center will be completed in 2017 and is expected to serve 45 million people each year. north bay ferry riders could soon be paying more. the golden gate bridge district which operates ferries to sausalito is considering reducing the discount given to riders who use translink or clipper cards to pay their fares. the change would help offset a budget deficit. it would amount to a fare

increase of $1.40 for sausalito passengers and a 65 cent increase for others. a swimming facility that years ago entertained a generation is about to reopen. swimmers will again be splashing at the richmond plunge on saturday morning. the historic indoor pool badly needed repairs when it was closed nine years ago. now it is reopening after more than $7 million in renovations. >> half the people that either worked here or -- they have some kind of a story of how they were here as a kid. and learned to swim here. it's incredible how many people actually learned to swim here and even worked on this project. >> looks great now. members of the community led the effort to collect the money to save the plunge which first opened back in 1926. today would be a perfect day to go indoor swimming because outside, bill, what's up here? >> today, frank, really with the fog and low clouds, it never burnt off. and some locations i think it

was one of the crowdier days we've -- crudier days we've seen all summer. you go to places out towards san leandro and danville, la if i yet, right in -- lafayette in this corridor, there's been no sunshine whatsoever. temperatures have been cool. we end up tonight just like we did last night with lots of clouds. tomorrow the fog is back and it's in your neighborhood. we do have some warmth at the end of the rainbow if you will. 90 degrees in the forecast for the weekend. it's not going to get hot but it will be warmer than it has been. we're looking for the same pattern to develop tomorrow but with slight changes. that slight change will be more sunshine. of course more sunshine, maybe a few more hours of sunshine. it's going to pop your temperature four, five degrees tomorrow. late tonight on the 10:00 news we'll be tracking the fog. it's going to be up into the fairfield area. then by tomorrow morning when you head in, it will be san rafael, oaked when, concord.

it burns right back to the beaches. we had the drizzle this morning. i saw a little drizzle myself this morning, especially on the west side of the east bay hills. windy at times. it was breezy today, especially on the richmond bridge and out towards the delta. this low pressure is migrating off. this high pressure is trying to rebuild. it's trying. that's supposed to be there. it hasn't been there. with that in mind warming tomorrow minor but as we head into the weekend, highs will get into the 80s and even low 90s. so a different weekend in store. coastal areas still cool, still foggy but there will be some breaks. the morning fog in san rafael tomorrow morning 62 degrees at lunch time. 70 degrees in downtown san rafael. there's a civic center right up there. about 3:00 tomorrow. so your five-day forecast is still cool. you notice, you're not hearing a lot of fire engines out there unless it's an emergency call but we're not having fires. this weather pattern is amazingly helpful to the men

and women who fight fires. no spare the air days at all this summer. >> everyone is talking about how cold it's been so far this summer. >> you've lived here your whole life. we've been here forever. this is unusual. >> it's cold. >> thanks, bill. 472 -- $472 million is on its way to california to help out of work homeowners. the california housing finance agency says the money will be used to help unemployed homeowners pay their mortgages while they look for work. that's on top of $64 million already in the program. qualified homeowners usually receive $1500 a month for six months. the new funding comes from the treasury department which today allocated $2 billion nationally for unemployed homeowners. last time they discovered adam lambert who just who will the idol judges uncover in the bay area this year? details on your chance to be the next american idol.

thousands of aspiring singers are expected to fill at&t park next week as american idol auditions return to san tan for the first time in to years. contestants will begin lining up on tuesday to register for the trials which actually begin

third and second but nonetheless three doubles for him and dallas braeden make it is stand up. complete game four hit victory for dallas, one of his best games since the perfect game. meantime the niners hard at it down at santa clara. the defensive line -- [ inaudible ] justin smith who led the team in sacks last year says they've got enough talent on that d-line to take him to the next level. >> i just want to win now. went to the play crofs once and we were in there for four -- playoffs once and we were in there for four hours. i would like to get back in and go a lot longer road than that. just want to win. the super bowl would be nice. that's our goal. >> first preseason game this weekend. so it is on. be kind of weird, wouldn't it, to get traded to the team you're playing-- >> exactly. walk across the dugout.
