four firefight terse are sent to bay area hospitals after two fires break out, one in the north bay, the other in san francisco. good evening. i'm ken wayne. and hello again, everyone. i'm heather holmes. we begin with that destructive fire which sent four firefighters to the hospital. the four-alarm fire broke out shortly after 4:00 at 404 center street. it appears that the fire began in the building's attic.

crews quickly arrived at the scene as flames shot out of the post office. smoke could be seen for miles. people gathered across the street. wind made the fire difficult to control. the two firefighters went to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. that fire tonight is under control but the cause is under investigation a three-alarm fire in the san francisco district. it start after 6:00 tonight in a single family home on rondell place. fire officials say it spread to a nearby apartment building. there are no reports of injuries to civilians but two firefighters needed medical attention. >> we had two firefighters injured. one because of exhaustion and the other because of laceration. minor injuries. they are both okay. >> reporter: rescuers went door to door making sure that

everyone was out of their apartment. there is no word yet on what caused this fire. >> tens of thousands of people converged converged on outside lands concert. a lot of changes were made, a lot of that sparked by complaint from neighbors because of noise, trash. >> reporter: the concert is still going. you can still hear the music. thousands of fans blocked the golden gate park for the outside land fess value. fans say that the downsize from thee days to two days is a

disappointment. >> it's fun. neighbors complained about loud music. thousands of fans streaming in and out and parking illegally. it seems like many of the party goers heard the complaints. >> actually, i planned ahead. we parked yesterday and we just took the bus here. we're going to plan a two-day thing. >> reporter: this year, chris come almost and many of their friends took steps to minimize their impact on the neighborhoods. >> i think collectively, we are trying to make it a little bit better because this is a great event, for a good cause for the recs and parks department. >> keith lives less than a block from the park and says that more people seem to be taking public transportation and has seen fewer cars parked illegally. >> i think it's great to cut the concert down to two nights. this thing is not meant for a three-day concert. this is enough festival

avenue. police say both the car ant bicyclists were going south on masonic when the cars hit the bike. the 21-year-old male victim died at the hospital. the 38-year-old driver left the scene but police found his 1989 mercedes a few blocks away and arrested him and charged him with vehicular manslaughter. the ongoing battle over same-sex marriage in california is now in the hand of a federal appeals court. as ken pritchett reports tonight, both sides have now filed motions requesting the higher court side with them. it >> gay marriage advocates scored a major victory but it was not complete. keefe juan vaughn walker found proposition 8 unconstitutional. he ruled that gay marriage could see supervise but not until this wednesday giving opponents time to appeal. i would say if you are planning on having your wedding on the 18th, don't put down any nonrefundable deposits. >> reporter: the decision is

now with the 9th circuit court. prop 8 supporters want an emergency stay to put gay marriages on hold. last night, y marriage supporters filed this motion saying their opponents do not have standing or the right to ask the courts for a stay. >> the question becomes, if proponents of prop 8 to have a specific injury, then it's not clear that they do under current law. >> reporter: governorgovernor schwarzenegger and attorney general brown had that standing but both decided not to take that standing. >> you have county clerk recorders they should be representing the people they serve which did vote for proposition 8. >> i wish that the 9th circuit

again and crashed shortly after that a hiker discovered the plane yesterday afternoon. it's not clear when exactly the plane went down. >> napa county fire officials say that a lawnmower sparked a fire near calistoga. the fire burned for about 10 hours. firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to homes. crews fully con taint flames this morning. cal fire says that authorities have not decided whether to pursue charges against the man who was operating the lawnmower. vallejo police are looking for two suspects wanted for murder. warrants have been issued for 37-year-old alfonso mastes of vallejo and his girlfriend jessica gonzalez. 3-8d-year-old st. nick stanley was found shot to death in a truck. investigators believe that maises was the gunman and is

considered armed and dangerous. police ask that if you see either suspect to call 911 immediately. drivers in the east bay are relieved they can now use a bypass road to get around a giant sinkhole. the new two-lane road in richmond opened this week until now, getting into and out of a neighborhood near via vevde drive and el port drive was difficult. drivers had been squeezing by on a single lane road. crews expect to fill that hole and have the entire area fix by next spring at least one member of the golden gate bridge board of directors says that people who walk across the bay area's most famous landmark should pay a toll. joanne sanders does not say how much the toll should be but wants the money to go building a proposed suicide barrier for the stand. cost estimates for the barrier which would be a large net flung underneath the bridge are

york left four people dead. 8 people in all were shot around 2:30 in the morning when gunfire erupted outside city grill. it's reported that the crowd was told to leave the downtown restaurant after a fight broke out inside. police say 25-year-old keith johnson is in custody and charged with four counts of second degree murder. authorities are still asking witnesses to come forward. >> we want to prosecute this individual to the fullest extent of the law. in order to do that, i have to have a strong case in a court of law and for that, we need all the witnesses that were there. >> three of the victims died at the scene. one of the victims was a man from texas in town to celebrate his wedding anniversary. a spectacular electrical fire tonight in washington, d.c. lit up the sky and little yoked heavy smokeless than two blocks from the white house. an underground transformer on f street suddenly caught fire sending flames shooting sky ward and smoke pouring off the side of the historic willard

hundreds of people gathered to help save the lives an east bay police officer. the officer is undergoing intense treatmentfamily and friends are doing their best to support. >> most of the time, officers are working to protect their community. but, tonight, these officers were protecting one of their own. it's a fundraising party for martinez police officer. he was diagnosed with non- hodgkins lymphoma last year. he has faced radiation and now he needs transplant. >> i want to give back. i have two young sons that are

ready to go out and move on with life. i'm lucky. i have a donor out there that can help me and i can have that chance. i'll go out there and try to be a donor to try to save somebody's life. >> reporter: police officers from martinez and various area agencies came together to help raise money. because he exhausted all of his sick leave, he has received more than just his money. >> in order to continue to get a paycheck and benefit, employees from not only city police department but city hall donated their own time so that brian can continue to get a paycheck and maintain his benefits. >> reporter: especially tough in a down economy. peterson says it shows how tight this community is. >> people donated anywhere from 8 hours to 80 hours of their own time and not sick time, vacation and comp time. it's actually money that could be in their pockets. >> reporter: in all, hundreds of people turned out including

other emergency personnel. kerry stuart is a captain with the contra costa police department district. >> i worked with him on numerous calls and all police officers, they respondd to sick calls. they help us out as much as they can. for that, we want to support them. >> reporter: sergeant carter learned this week there is an exact match who is willing to donate stem cells. he is willing to start the stem cell process this thursday at stanford medical center. john sasaki, cust ktvu several dozen volunteers took to the street, or more specifically, between the streets to clean up. the project organizers say that the volunteers were trying to help city maintenance crews during a time layoffs and budget cuts. >> the face of oakland is parks and medians. in fact, people driving through

campaign another eight-figure check. california state reported this weekend that whitman made a $13 million contribution to herself boosting the total amount she has given her own campaign to $104 million. whitman's personal fortune is estimated at $1.3 billion. her democratic opponent, jerry brown, so far, has spent about $700,000 out of his political war chest of $24 million a vacaville father called police to help find his young son who had been missing for almost three hours. but when officers arrived at the home and what they found, that actually led to the father's arrest. laura cole has the story. >> we found it disturbing, to said least. >> reporter: this is why. a house of filth, rooms cluttered with clothes everywhere, garbage on top of bar gagne. a ladder partially blocking a child's ped room and officers can't even get through the hallway.

we have been talking about cooler weather so much over the past few weeks, it feels strange that we are talking about a little bump in the numbers. nothing major. you can see the rain still keeping it cool. oakland topped out at 67 degrees, concord at 80, san jose at 73. warm spot out towards antioch. a lot of events happening tomorrow. can you see in san francisco for the giants' game three. partly sunny skies. temperatures mainly in the lower 60s and that breeze will kick into the afternoon hours. could be around 5 to 70 miles per hour. and outside lands, at the golden gate park, you can see come morning, heading to the park, the cloud out there fact to, 58 degrees. by 3:00, only 58 degrees.
