there are no guarantees or certainties under chief gascon. >> reporter: we tried to reach loftus and cashman for comment this afternoon but our calls were not returned. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. we are learning more about a fatal officer involved shooting in buehrleing game last night. police say officers were investigating a report of a street disturbance when 30-year- old edgar elizondo came at them with a gun. they say he was shot with a stun gun but he continued coming at police. he was shot. officers are investigating the death of a teenager who allegedly shot himself while playing with a gun. investigators are calling it a tragic accident. they've determined that the boy accidentally shot himself in

front of his brother. investigators are still trying to determine where the gun came from. >> we know what happened but at this point we're trying to find out how the child got the gun. and hopefully our investigation will be able to lead us to how he got that loaded firearm. >> meantime goodwin's coach is holding a vigil tonight to help raise money. san francisco has being ideas with treasure island and as of today it can move forward with plans for the prime piece of real estate. sal castaneda has te tailed of today's big agreement. >> reporter: treasure island has not been an active military base since 1967, the government has owned that land, that is until today. today secretary of the u.s.

navy, house speaker nancy pelosi and mayor newsom commemorated the changing of the ownership of treasure island. >> a lot of sailors and marines who left from here, this was the last time they saw america. >> reporter: mayor newsom thanked former brown and others who he says worked through a pain staking process. the process was launched in 1984. >> it was not easy to put together. but we stand here today to celebrate that standing. >> reporter: the plan is to develop housing units, hotels, shopping areas and open space.

house speaker nancy pelosi says the plan may be used as a model for other military bases for transition. >> it means we can now go into the future assured of this partnership that's good for the bay area and good for the u.s. taxpayer. >> reporter: ground breaking is scheduled for next year. many if not all of the 30 or so business already on the island will need to be relocated. jim morowski founded treasure island wine and wants to be part of the island's future. >> we want to work with the development and understand how we can be part of the redevelopment and be part of the newest neighborhood in san francisco. >> reporter: part of the agreement is for the navy to clean up treasure island before it is turned over to the city. that clean up work should begin by early next year. live on treasure island, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. most of us know about treasure island's past as a

site of a giant fair and navy base. >> reporter: this manmade island is only 75 years old but it is truly a treasure of an island. it was originally made of bay dredgings to accommodate the bay bridge expedition and it yes it was named after the robert stevenson novel. it was going to become a military airfield but with the opening of mayfields now sfo that never happened. instead, ti with its combalet and huge bailings became the home of pan am flying clipping boats. it became a naval base in world war ii and it was a major embarcation site. there was still stipulations

restrictions, and still the navy owned it until today. today portions of ti are becoming san francisco's fastest growing residential neighborhoods and a center of bay area film making. tom vacar. caltrans is reporting major progress in the construction of bay bridge. huge spans have just arrived from china. construction is moving so quickly and smoothly that the deck sections will be in place by next week. >> these sections here are 225 feet long and they weigh over 1,500-tons they're the largest parts of the roadbed that we're going to put in place. >> reporter: most of the projects major parts are here or will arrive soon including high strength wire. the cables will be used for the massive suspension arm of the signature tower which is currently in the process of

going up. we have more information about the bay bridge project on our website ktvu.com just click on the bay bridge tab. we are following breaking news right now on the san mateo coast. we just got word that a glass fire on pigeon point may have been contained. the fire broke out just after 3:00 p.m. on the east side of highway 1, calfire says it launched an aggressive attack with six engines, a chopper and two air tankers, power lines though are line in the area and pg & e is currently on the scene, the cause is still under investigation. traffic is moving again tonight on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountain after a big rig crash shut down the highway for hours today. the truck overturned just before 7:00 this morning on big moody curb. the wreck blocked northbound lanes of traffic for five

hours. for a time, chp diverted traffic until they could up right that trailer. no one was injured in the crash. two people were hurt and traffic was snarled after a head on crash on the golden gate bridge. the highway patrol says about 9:00 this morning a big rig rear ended a car ending it into oncoming traffic. and that set off a chain reaction that involves two more cars. two people suffered minor to moderate injuries and all lanes of the bridge were closed for about a half hour. bridge officials say a movable barrier designed to block head on crashes is in the works and that it will have a lower profile than earlier design. >> back then it was a heavier, they were wider, and they've brought them down in width.

a shark began chewing on a man's water craft. the shark flipped the kayak over. when the shark swam away, coca sent a distress signal to other kayakers who helped him get to coast. and the baseball player who hit the best home run ever has died. everybody knows that phrase, bobby thompson who's shot heard around the world home run won the pennant for the new york giants. he died last night. the san francisco giants recognized thompson's home run as one of the biggest parts of

the team's history. there are several displays around at&t park. bobby thompson was 86 years old. a verdict today in illinois is being called a major victory for former governor rod blagojevich. he faced 24 counts in a government corruption case, but after two weeks of deliberations, a jury found him guilty of just one count of lying to federal agents. the jury was hung on the remaining 23 counts including trying to sell or trade president barack obama's former senate seat and we are just getting word that that jury was deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction on the alleged scheme to sell that senate seat. rod blagojevich was also facing several wire fraud charges, rod blagojevich faces up to five years in prison, prosecutors say they plan to retry the case. the two u.s. senate candidates from california have refused to comment on plans for a new islamic center near ground zero. the issue is a local concern.

boxer noted that when she was a marin county supervisor, quote no u.s. senator told me what to do. republican challenger fiarina called the mosque debate quote a personal and local issue. the plan has sparked a heated debate with opponents saying it would be disrespectful to build an islamic center so close to the ground zero site. ktvu is holding a debate between boxer and fiorina. the debate will be held at st. mary's college in moraga. randy shandobil will serve as mediator. you can watch the debate live right here on ktvu channel 2 news. the north american aerospace says the jets were sent out. the aircraft left the area before those fighter jets

arrived, two loud noises apparently sonic booms were felt throughout the pugit sound area. ktvu has learned that the suspect is from oakland. david beanick is live in sacramento county and joins us now with late details. >> t a ils. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. members have fired tear gas into this apartment complex but this stand off involving a bay area man is still going on. in fact, it started around 2:30 this afternoon. behind me you can see that edison avenue is closed right here in the outskirts of sacramento. deputies went to unit 49 of that complex this afternoon looking for a man of the name bryan brown from oakland. now he's wanted for allegedly shooting another man, james wilkins last month outside a liquor store in oakland. deputies saw brown, he then ran back inside. they are not sure at this point if he has a gun.

about 20 families have been forced from their homes at the apartment complex. now you may remember back in early june there was another stand off also involving a suspect from the bay area, in that case the stand off ended with the suspect being shot and killed at the scene. deputies here in sacramento say this time the stand off will not go that long. i'm david beanick now back to you. new details tonight in the horrifying deaths of two south carolina toddlers. find out what the mother told police about the deaths of her two children found in their car seats submerged in a river. we the see the fog out there in the distance. then another cooling trend, we'll have more on that coming

the tragic and horrifying deaths of two toddlers found inside a car in a south carolina river took a new turn today. police say the boy's mother has now confessed to killing her children. >> a statement was made by the mother that she had suffocated the children, and of course the children were dead when they were placed into the water. >> divers found 18 month old jevon and 2-year-old jevon julian inside a submerged car yesterday. at first the 29-year-old reported the children drowned. but last night, julie admitted she suffocated the boys, submerged the car and then faked the accident. she says she lived with her

mother and was overwhelmed. >> she was frustrated with her mother telling her that she wasn't taking care of the children or couldn't take care of children and she just wanted to be free. >> the boy's deaths are similar to the susan smith case also out of south carolina. in 1994, smith's two toddler boys were found in a car strapped in their seats submerged in a lake. she is now serving a life sentence. let's check in now with meteorologist mark tamayo to tell us what's happening outside, mark. >> reporter: hello ken, today we have a different weather picture with more sunshine across most of the bay area. even the coastline enjoying sunny conditions. there's the fog bank way offshore. you can see to the west of san francisco to the west of point ray. we have a few patches moving in, you can see right along

point rays, but closer to the marin head lands. mostly clear skies along most portions of the bay area. the inland spots cooled off a few degrees from yesterday's highs. concord right now at 80 degrees, san francisco at 64. and santa rosa in the upper 70s, it's 77 degrees. you can see the clear skies, we are looking out toward san francisco out in the distance. weather story, fog increasing once again overnight, late tonight into early tomorrow morning. we'll stick with the pattern with fog and warm temperatures inland. we're talking about another cooling trend. as far as tomorrow, not a big change from today. lower 60s for the beaches. temperatures inland warmest locations only in the lower 80s, around 82 to 83 degrees. you can see our forecast model first thing tor morning concentrated forecast.

while there's been plenty of grim news, there are signs of life in san francisco's critical tourism business. rob roth is in the city with details on the rebound -- rob. >> reporter: it maybe a little too soon for the san francisco tourism business to bring out

the champane and start cheering, but the economy seeming to be coming back. san francisco's tourist spots appear to be busier this summer than last. and who would know better than a veteran cab driver. >> this summer is much better. i think so, for me, for my business. much better. >> reporter: and it's not just a anecdotal, hotel bookings are higher this year than last. unlike these street performers, hotel owners are not ready to break out in a dance.

that's because they are still having to offer rooms at a discount, although the discount is not as steep as last year. officials say more international travelers are visiting the bay area, among them is this family of four who came from france. >> so around the same price at in france, much more expensive or less expensive? >> we have a little money, finally. got three kids out of college. so we're kind of taking advantage of something we haven't been able to do ever before. >> reporter: the center's convention business remains relatively flat this year. experts say they don't expect to see a marked improvement until 2013. rob roth. general motors is recalling almost 250,000 vehicles because of a possible seat belt problem. the voluntary recall affects 2009, 2010 models of the

we want to take you back to live pictures out of sacramento county where the arrests of a suspect, a murder suspect has just concluded. there was a man from oakland who was wanted in connection with a liquor store murder in oakland last month. oakland police got a tip that this suspect was in the sacramento area and contacted sacramento county sheriff's officials who located the man who aparticipantly barricaded himself inside a building right

outside the city of sacramento. the suspect has been arrested and is in custody, so we wanted to keep you up to date on that. a murder suspect from oakland is in custody after a stand off in sacramento county. in other news tonight, a new high tech way to keep track of student social security being used right here in the bay area. the technology is expected to lessen the teachers's responsibility and hopefully increase students learning. ken pritchett is live with more on how this system works. >> the children wear this tracking device on their children and it will alert if the child leaves campus. one benefit of this technology is for teachers because it will allow them more time to teach. it is nap time, a brief moment in the day when children can relax, a rare luxury for

high profile incidents in oakland. the swings didn't happen in china town but both cases have received much attention in the chinese american community. police say they are now working with the neighborhood crime prevention counsel. >> we still have beat officers, we are still talking to them on how to provide better service to that area. a new report says foreclosures has disproportionally affected latino borrowers here in the area. more than half of all of the state's foreclosures involved latino borrowers.

latino's made up less than 1/3 of borrowers. the study's author says greater funder is needed for spanish counselors to help latino borrowers avoid foreclosure. you might have thought a job at mcdonalds were for teenagers. now it's for anyone trying to look for any type of job. >> reporter: mcdonald's it's hiring. today they are looking to hire 3,000, but today, three times that number showed up to fill out an application. selected stores held a one day open hiring date aiming to bring on 1,000 new workers

researchers have found new evidence that links brain disorders that can affect athletes. they found the same toxic proteins in a spinal cords of three athletes who had suffered head injuries then later died of als. researchers speculate the findings could mean athletes who have been diagnosed with als including lou garrett disease actually have the degenerative brain disease. two studies show almost a

million children may have been misdiagnosed with having adhd. researchers say those children did not have real behavior problems but were the youngest students in the class. in fifth and eighth grades, the youngest students were more than twice as likely to use ridilin to control adhd. one of the new features is expected to -- last month, it included language describing a

idol fever is showing up in the pay area. thousands lined up at san francisco's at&t park before dawn this morning. all of them hoping for a shot at becoming the next american idol. claudine wong was there. >> reporter: before the sun came up, hundreds, then thousands lined up. >> i want to be the next american idol. >> we came out here because she's the next american idol. >> you're convinced? >> i'm very convinced. >> so convinced you'll stand out here in the cold. >> until it snows, whatever it takes. >> reporter: the die hards came early. >> i would rather be safe than sorry than having it be too late and they tell us that we can't try out. >> it was really cold this

best university. it's one of a quartet of ivy league universities. the other princeton, yale and columbia. and uc berkeley was the highest state funded university. it ranked 22nd over all and was number one when it comes to public universities. let's check in now with mark tamayo to see if there's any changes in store >> i see minor changes, first a bump up in the numbers then the story of our lives, i'm talking about a cooling trend. there's that fog bank, we had clearing skies over a good portion of the area. the skies will be the increase. you can see the latest record, winds out west-southwest. gusting to 24-miles-an-hour, so outside right now we have mostly clear skies looking out toward san francisco bay.

the transamerica pyramid in the foreground there. a fairly nice evening but a nice evening as well. with winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour. as far as temperatures today, we cooled things down inland. you can see mainly in the mid- 80s. san francisco 66 and san rafael at 73 degrees. mostly sunny skies over most of the bay area this afternoon, fog will be on the increase overnight and for tomorrow, clearing skies to near the coastline, the extended forecast does feature that cooling friend. here's the latest on the satellite, you notice this little area of low pressure that actually probably mixed out the fog a bit today. also cooled off the inland neighborhoods, there's also still quite a bit of concern, up to our north to the east of eureka. not a big change for tomorrow. but by thursday, we're going to warm things up a little bit as high pressure briefly returns. the high scoots out of town and once again this area of low pressure moves in to the north.

this will be the source of more fog and to more cooling as we do head into the weekend. by the weekend, warmest locations inland will be struggling to make it to the lower 80s. once again, there is a fog and drizzle first thing tomorrow morning. good drizzle especially coast side right around the bay. temperatures mainly in the low to mid-50s. by the afternoon hours, partly to mostly sunny. not a big change from today's highs but 60 to 84 degrees. here's a look at the number, santa rosa 77, fairfield 82. mainly the mid- to upper 50s and the warmest locations inland on track to reach the low to mid-80s. san jose forecast highs 74, gilroy lower 80s. with skies becoming mostly sunny. here's a look ahead, your five day forecast, and temperatures come up with a few degrees. look what is approaching the bay area friday. with a sign at least the gain

facing a lawsuit stemming from last summer's massive station fire near los angeles. more than a thousand people who's homes were damaged in the fire are part of the lawsuit alleging the insurer has refused to pay claims. a farmer spokesman refused to comment saying the company hasn't received the lawsuit. the station fire claimed the lives of two firefighters and destroyed almost 90 homes. saving money may actually be slowing airline travel. up next what's causing delays and how you might be to blame. droiiiid.
