7:05 am
stun gun, but didn't strike. he then continued to lung at police with a large serrated steak knife. that is when they shot and killed him outside the house. gladys tells a much different story, she says her son didn't have a weapon and police shouldn't have shot him. now the district attorney general's office as well as the burial game police department is launching their own investigation. live in burlingame, tara moriarty, ktvu news. >> time now 7:05. san jose police are investigating two stabbings to see if they could be connected. the first one happened at pain avenue and southward boulevard. a bye and a man were stabbed in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant. for one of those victims the injuries are live threatening. about an hour later a 34-year- old san jose man was stabbed at cole march road near story road. he is expected to survive. police believe the attacks are

gang-related. that investigation continues. today is the scheduledy vickings day for the san francisco dance club where a man was killed last month. jelly's lease was terminated after 39-year-old lee farley of richmond was shot to death outside that club. police say that incident began with an argument inside that club but jelly's deny that claim. attorneys for the club say they'll keep operating despite the eviction notice. both sides will probably take this issue to court. 7:06. today chp officers will conduct the second part of the crackdown on drivers using cell phones. 900 drivers were cited during the first day of the campaign last week. today officers will not only pull over people who are talking on a hand-held or texting, they say drivers will also be stopped for simply looking at their phones. violations include a fine of $20 for the first offense and $50 for convictions after that.

7:08 am
because 2237, we had an earlier accident, a little bit slow as you can see already, kind of slow. this is the first week of school for many, or for the fall term for many schools, and we have more people on the road correlated to that. let's move along and take a look at will 80 north and southbound. this traffic still looks good. no major problems by the way if you're driving all the way to the bay bridge toll plaza. rly this morning, about an hour ago, chp motorcycle officer hit a pedestrian on brotherhood way near practice sara. not all that crowded. this was heading away from lake merced. you can see the chp officers were doing an investigation. these are pictures taken a short while ago from news chopper 2. one of the officers on the scene did tell us more about the accident. >> right now it's too early to determine who was at fault for this but we're conducting our investigation right now. >> reporter: a person on a bike
7:09 am

7:10 am
wind today. low clouds and sunny, breezy, upper 70s, low 80s inland. really a cool pattern. but with the low clouds will burn off, 65 san francisco is still below average, 68 in oakland, should be 74, 78 in santa ariza, 82 your record, mountain view 71, and san jose 74, should be 84. so even with sunshine we're running well below average. the big news though considering the mild temperatures at the surface are the much cooler temperatures in the higher elevations. mount tam is 11 degrees cooler than they were at this time yesterday. that's a big drop. that system in the north is bringing in cool side. 50s to 58 at pleasanton, 55 in the san an tom, a tahoe is here and calm and yet 60 degrees. 50 in the valley, 50s and 60s, now low 70s down in southern california.
7:11 am
the water temperatures, sea surface temperatures have warmed up a little bit, mid-to upper 50s instead of the low 40s and 50s. that keeps us from warming up too much. there's too much in the way of low pressure coming in, bumping that high up. a really strong system dives into the pacific northwest, i think it will be strong enough to break up the low clouds and fog, but sunny breezy and windy as we head towards the weeksen. today the clouds give way to sunshine, 60s, 70s, or upper 70s or low 80s, san jose 74, a little warmer tomorrow, we'll see that breeze kick in on the weekend for cool erin land temps. >> all right. >> steve: thank you. we have developing news. coming from india, 18 children have just been killed after a school building collapsed. now that collapse is blamed on heavy rains and mudslides in india. officials think there may be at least 10 children and two teachers still buried in the rubble. 8 children have been rescued so

7:16 am
three of those facilities are located in san francisco, 8 in sonoma county, one in marin county, another in lake county t foundation says it has sent letters to almost 3,000 patients and posted an alert on its web site. now the vaccines that may have been affected include the hepatitis a and hepatitis b vaccine, the guard a sil vaccine, the pole i don't vaccine and the mmr vaccine which protection against measles, mumps and rue bella. they say the original vaccines aren't harmful but they may not be effective. now now procedures are reportedly being developed to better monitor vaccinations and how they are stored. live in the newsroom pam cook. the public school district will be sending out alerts to parents and students about getting immunized against whooping cough. a student who is not vaccinated against whooping cough could

7:18 am
resignation of former hewlett packard ceo. jody fisher says her contract with high pressure slowed after she rejected sexual advances from hurd. she work with them to.org night networking events for the customers. they determined hurd did not violate the company's sexual harassment policies and he denies making any advancements towards fisher but he resigned after the company said he falls fides expense reports. a shake up within the san francisco police department. two high-ranking officers have been demoted. kevin cashman and investigations commander johnhoff department of justice were demoted to the rank of captain by chief george gascone. both men had supervise ral or investigative connections to the crime lab where a former technician is accused of stealing drugs. >> there is no way around the fact that you're goin' backwards, you have been at the
7:19 am
highest level, now you're gonna go back to the lower level, but i think that everybody has been -- is readjusting to the fact that there are no guarantees or certainties under chief gascone. >> both men have more than 20 years experience with the police department. chief gascone has been making changes within the department for the past couple of months. so far, the chief is not commenting on those demotions. alameda's mayor beverly johnson expects the city manager to conduct an investigation. this is after the fire chief, david cap letter, was caught on camera filling up his personal cars at the city's free gas pump. some firefighters took the pictures over the weekend showing cap letter filling up his bmw convertible and his pickup truck and then they sent the photos to the mayor. now cap letter says he doesn't drive a city vehicle and he is entitled to the free gasoline under an agreement he made with the former city manager when he became the fire chief in 2007.
7:20 am
we have breaking news now. you see a coast guard vessel here, just off of peer 45 in san francisco, and there is also a coast guard helicopter looking for a vessel that reportedly called in in distress. they are looking for it now. these coast guard boats really do move out. that thing is going fast. they are looking for it now. i also have a helicopter, so if you live in san francisco's marina district or pacific heights or in salsalito that's what the activity is all about. and they are booking so we do not know. the only thing we know is they were called in just after 7:00 a.m. searching for a vessel that reportedly came in on the radio in distress. they called in on the radio. so now we're trying to find out more about this, we'll let you know soon as we know more, but these are live pictures from news chopper 2. 7:20, two back to the deck. >> obviously a story we'll stay on top of. looks like that boat took a
7:21 am
short turn, changed directions a bit. >> yoo. there are now ramifications from a pay tal plane crash in palo alto. >> also a unanimous vote for the alameda city council. it should make it safer for some kids to go to class.

7:24 am
that should make it safer for the students across the street while the school's main building is being rebuild. trace elementary as you know was heavily damaged by arson, some of the students are using portable classrooms, some of which are across dana avenue. during the school hours the speed limit on dana avenue between hester and nationally avenues will now be 15 miles per hour instead of 25 miles per hour. >> 15 is really crawling along. >> yoo. >> yes. 7:24, let's see how traffic is moving elsewhere around the bay area with a check on traffic with sal. sal? we just reported on that coast guard incident going on and i'm watching on one of the monitors, i'm seeing they are pulling autopsy life vest, so apparently this turned out to be not something as serious as we first thought it was which is great news. so if you see the helicopter and the coast guard bolt doing
7:25 am
something out there you don't have to worry that anyone is in danger, not a lot of people from the pacifica and marina heights can see this going on but you don't to have worry. the westbound bay bridge, pretty big delay, the first week of school for san francisco schools ands for many other school districts, could be the reason why all of a sudden we have a lot more slow traffic than we did last week. 880 north and southbound here at the coliseum doing very well. no problems there. 2:37, slow traffic, you can see for yourself crossing 230 and continuing out to swing a road. 7:25, let's to back to steve. >> thank you sal. well a little change here this morning. there's some higher fog. we had that really low down in the deck drizzly foggy conditions the last couple of days, i mean it was right on the bridges, couldn't see. now it's up, a high fog base, up around 2,000 feet. all society requested that low. see how the thundershower activity pops up near the oregon border, right there. not too bad for this ti of year, a strong system coming

7:27 am
low 70s, mid-70s are for many inland locations, each some low 80s in locations that should be in the low 90s to 100s, that's not happening. it's going to be rather cool inland as we head to the weekend. tori and dave. a north bay target cashier is in trouble with the law for what she allegedly did for some of her customers, we'll tell you about that. >> we'll tell you about those bounce houses, many of them with lead inside, many in the bay area. also a community comes together trying to save a 2- year-old girl with cancer. we'll tell you how you can help this child in oakland this morning. areas that should be in the 90s to 100s to 60s and 70s over by the coast. almost isothermal, the same everywhere you go. nothing compared to what we usually see this time of year. a lot of wind and temperatures as we go to the weekend tori. >> it is 19 minutes before 8:00. residents of lake tahoe say this is a record year for close encounters with bears. they say they are getting 150 to 200 calls a day of bear sightings, break-ins or encounters from truckee to south lake. they say the problem continues to be people leaving garbage and food out in the open and it will probably get worse as bears start foraging for food before they hibernate for winter. a new poll reveals how americans feel about the economy. we'll have the results of that poll and what it means for elections in november. a warning for people who own certain holmes. about a hidden danger.
