squashing it back [ audio problems ] a better week weather-wise. we'll go 70s there. over the coastal hills inland 80s to near 90. more on the cool down for the weekend. westbound pretty good heading to the macarthur maize. traffic continues to move along relatively well. this morning if your driving here at the tollplaza it's light. now back to the desk. it is 6:00. fire crews were called to the scene of a suspicious fire in vacaville overnight. it broke out around midnight at vacaville high school. crews are still investigating but it is believed that somebody broke a window and deliberately set a portable classroom on fire. the blaze was reported quickly by a neighbor. crews say they were able to put the fire out before it spread beyond the one portable structure. the school year is already underway. as far as we know classes will

be held today. so far there has been no word on damage estimates but investigators say they will use surveillance video to track down whoever is responsible. time now 6:01. we have a traffic problem to tell you about. traffic is gridlocked around at&t park in san francisco right now. thousands of people are camped out for this morning's "american idol" auditions. our talented ktvu tara great performer herself right in the middle of them. >> reporter: thank you, dave. i'll give you my own private concert when i get back to the station. but it is. bumper to bumper in the blocks surrounding the ballpark as folks wait to begin the audition process about 8:00. as we mention we're gearing up for the tenth season of "american idol." we've been hearing a lot of screaming and singing throughout the morning as folks exercise the vocal cords for the make it or break it auditions. those are set to get underway

about 10:00 this morning. "american idol" crews will be letting all the folks through between 7:30 and 8:30, they don't know that yet. they're going to begin the process and line up on the field and give it their best shot. joining me live daniel. you've traveled nine hours to get here this morning. >> all the way from hem et. >> reporter: what are you going to be singing for the producers. >> killing me softly and then a little trisha yearwood. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: okay. i give you a ten. what are you doing right now? do you have a career, are you in school? >> i actually work security. >> reporter: so this would be a

dream come true for you. >> it would be better than getting paid $9 an hour. i'll tell you that much. >> reporter: break a leg this morning. we wish you the best. there have been a lot of changes to the judge panel. steven tyler is taking simon's spot. jennifer lopez was in talks to be a judge but those negotiations fell through. we have other auditions taking place throughout the united states in austin, milwaukee, new orleans. nashville and jersey city boasted the highest turn out. not as high of a number here in san francisco where there were reportedly about 7,000 people who showed up on tuesday to get wristbands. tori, you asked me on my last hit what is sort of the process, the order for folks as they line up to get into the ballpark this morning? the answer is it's completely random. doesn't matter if you got here first. everybody will be going in and it is completely random. these folk haves no idea when they're actually going to be

singing. coming up a little later in the show we'll introduce you to some of these potential contestants. live in san francisco, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you. if steven tyler is going to be the next "american idol" judge he's got to be more careful on stage. watch this youtube video. it shows him, yeah, taking another tumble off the stage. this time while aerosmith was performing in toronto. luckily he was not hurt. you remember steven tyler broke his shoulder last year after falling off a stage in south dakota. 6:05. contract between ac transit and its unions is heading back to court. ac transit directors voted yesterday to appeal a court order for the two sides to use a mediator to settle the dispute. a mediation is expected to start tomorrow. and ac transit says it will comply while the appeal is considered. ac transit will also appeal a separate order that blocks them

from imposing new work rules. time now 6:05. sal is watching all of the traffic around at&t park, but everything else around the bay area as well. >> that's right. you mentioned at&t park. a lot of the good parking spots are gone. if you happen to drive through the neighborhood maybe a stop at the corner of third and king for happy donuts and coffee. usually there's no one around at that time. it's very different today as you saw. keep that in mind if you're going to your job or whatever a lot of the parking spots you rely on might be gone. go ahead and take a look at the commute on the bay bridge. this is my time to pitch public transit getting down there. san francisco getting into from the bay bridge looks good. a couple more pictures here. 880 northbound and southbound. that traffic is moving along relatively well. and no major problems. again, we keep following the peninsula where traffic on highway 101 and 280 still

looking good. if you're running to catch your flight at sfo should have no trouble getting there on 101. 6:06. here's steve. >> thank you. good. little change today. sea breeze cut in half out towards travis and some higher elevatns about eight degrees warmer. morning fog and mist. yesterday had the fog lift. people could actually have decent visibility along the coast. now back to that fog. warmer inland today near 90 for some. the weekend looks cooler and windy. much cooler as we start tomorrow. today though the low that was responsible up near the oregon border for cooling is down has moved off towards the east. in between here comes high pressure. so it's only going to stick around for a day but it will give us a sooner burn off on that fog. santa rosa now this is the town probably out by the airport it will be around 84. they run about four or five degrees warmer. 79 is warmer than yesterday. i dropped san francisco one just because i think there will be more fog slower to burn off

compared to yesterday. walnut creek 79 yesterday. 86 today. 72 downtown oakland and san jose from 75 to 79. still below average. here's one of the keys mt. tamalpais eight degrees warmer. warmer air aloft. 52 mill valley to 55 belmont at 57. tahoe cooler air especially up in the higher elevations. sacramento 54. they'll be in the low 90s today. there goes our system from yesterday. but here comes the next one. weak one. and strong one right there. they will combine together on friday, saturday and sunday to give us a rat ere strong cool down and a really windy sunday. today we warm it up. after that with the fog increasing and advance of that system that will take us into friday and saturday. i do think the sun will kind of breakthrough and the fog will get mixed out on sunday. but the wind will be cranking up. today fog and mist and sunny and warmer especially away from

the coast. breezy at times. still component of a west- southwest wind even though it's decreased it's still there. no north wind unless it's just a little puff. but overall still a sea breeze. low clouds, breezy and cooler friday then much cooler saturday. sunday looks windy and monday warmer and tuesday. we're learning about more cases of salmonella in the bay area linked to the massive egg recall. there are reportedly about 25 salmonella cases in san francisco. 16 cases in alameda county, 22 cases in contra costa county, eight cases in san mateo county and 38 cases in santa clara county. so far no deaths have been reported. >> fever, diarrhea, vomiting. sick a couple of days. usually they will recover. the disease is much more severe

good morning to you. welcome back. house speaker clarifying comments she made about the plans to build a mosque near ground zero in new york city. earlier this week she said the mosque project is a local zoning and urban development issue that new yorkers should decide for themselves. she also called for an investigation to see who is funding the opposition to that mosque. >> but there is no question that there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. and i join those who have

called for looking into how is this on cig to the mosque being funded. >> critics responded to that by saying she was trying to intimidate those who oppose the project. so she issued a statement saying she wasn't calling for a formal investigation. she was just saying there is a need for transparency. 6:13. the united states has reached a milestone in the nearly seven and a half year iraq war. the last combat troops have now left iraq and crossed into kuwait. ktvu is live in the washington d.c. bureau with more on this. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's right. operation new dawn begins. the next phase of war in iraq focused on rebuilding and securing the country without u.s. combat troops. the last combat brigade is on its way home now.

you can see cheers and high fives as the fourth striker brigade second infantry division left iraq and rolled into kuwait. >> it's great to finally be able to start to hand the country back over to the civilians and stuff. >> relief to finally know our tour is over. >> reporter: they are leaving a country that faces enormous challenges that does not have a fully functioning government. 50,000 u.s. troops will stay in iraq for another year in a noncombat role. the state department is beefing up the number of security contractors to take over some of the jobs that had been done by u.s. troops. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu, channel 2 news. it is 6:15. the iraq war began on march 20, 2003, with a shock and awe bombing of baghdad. since then at least 4, 415 american servicemen and women

have died in hostile action. and nearly 32,000 were wounded. there is no confirmed number of iraqi casualties but estimates range from 50,000 to as many as 600,000 iraqis were killed. time now 6:15. if you're in the u.s. military, you can get free tickets to this sunday's indy grand prix in sonoma. the tickets for troops program will give 10,000 tickets to active duty service members or veterans of the national guard, the navy, the army, the air force, marines and coast guards. tickets are also available for military families. pg&e and the uso are helping to distribute those tickets. by the way the raceway has designated sunday as military appreciation day. you may catch sight of some fighter planes today, however the north american aerospace program wants to reassure you it's just a drill.

norad will conduct a number of exercises today mostly visible in the skies over the sacramento area involving fighter jets and a c21 transport plane. it's testing its ability to intercept and identify potentially hostile aircraft. time now 6:16. ious are once again looming on california's horizon. state controller says california's about to run out of money and he will have to start issuing ious next month to business that is contract with the state unless a budget is passed soon. california is facing a $19 billion budget shortfall. the budget is now 50 days overdue. this will be the second straight year that ious may have to be issued. and because of that late budget, furlough fridays are back again. they're going into effect for most state employees tomorrow. the state supreme court sided with governor schwarzenegger yesterday and ruled the furloughs can resume at least

for now. this effects about 144,000 state employees. many of them have already gone through a year and a half of furlough fridays. the first group of national guard troops about to be deployed along the california- mexico border. governor schwarzenegger says troops will begin deployment on september 1st and are the first of 224 national guards men to be assigned there. it is in support of president obama's plan to deploy 1200 national guards men along the border. they'll help patrol agents by looking out for illegal border crossings and smugglers for up to one year. the city of san francisco joining the attorneys for the suit over gay marriage in an attempt to recover costs. the city has asked the court to extend a deadline for seeking the reimbursement for fees. they will seek to recover

attorneys fees from prop 8 supporters but only if the lower court's decision is upheld. time now 6:18. get you to where you need to go. are you still keeping an eye on san francisco? >> i am. we're going to stay there because of the try outs for "american idol." you can see the people in the area sort of like a baseball game, a very early baseball game at third and king. so just be ware. a lot of the parking spots are gone, a lot of people are there. about 7,000 people is the count that we got. so if you take the third street exit to go around the embark dare are you'll see crowding where you don't normally see it. those are the ones you hate, the ones you don't expect. traffic still looks okay getting into san francisco. if you're on the east bay north and southbound 880 in front of the oakland coliseum looking pretty good. 6:19. here's steve. all right. thank you, sal. we have a lot of fog back now.

yesterday we had the fog way up at 2,000 feet. it burned off but it was breezy and cooler inland. today the fog is lower, little more mist there as well. it will burn off sooner and inland areas will jump up good five to ten degrees in some. back into what you had tuesday and that was a lot of fog and mist and ten temperatures stayed in the 6 0z. san francisco 54. this time yesterday you were at 5. four degree drop. high yesterday was 65. i went 64 today. i think the coast will cool off just a bit where inland areas will jump up. 70s around the bay. 70 at mt. tamalpais which is eight degrees warmer than yesterday. that's a big jump. sign high pressure is built in for one day at least. 18-degree spread there. dublin 65. the low responsible for our cool down yesterday has moved out. the high in between will give way to the left of the screen and a strong one coming out of

the gulf of alaska for the weekend. mist and warmer weather for the coast. breezy at times. 60s and 70s by the beaches. 70s to upper 70s by the bay and mid-80s to near 90 inland. cool down starts tomorrow and then it cools down on saturday. the fog will be wiped out. sunny but windy on sunday and then warmer on monday. tori and dave. thank you, steve. 6:20. this morning one of the biggest names in retailing reported second quarter earnings and the news was close to what analysts had forecast. sears holding corporation reports losing $39 million in the three months that ended in late july. that's just half of what it lost during the same time frame last year. it credits growing profit margins at k mart for helping to close the gap. but overall revenue slipped slightly to just under $10.5 billion. time now 6:21. coming up we'll tell you how this summer's mild weather is effecting the wine making in the napa valley. and find out why some bay

here. bay bridge, san mateo bridge, good. richmond bridge looks a little foggy. we'll have to ask steve about that. let's go back to the desk. this summer's cool weather is changing the wine making landscape in napa valley. growers say they're having to use some special techniques including trimming grapes early to keep their grapes viable in these cool temperatures. they say the mild season is not much of a problem for early harvest white variety so far but could be for late harvest reds. >> the big problem could be that if we go too far into the fall we might hit some rain. >> the longer growing season can reduce sugar but enrich the flavor but with potentially hot months ahead growers say it's too early to know how the season will play out. 6:25. some of the perks of alameda's fire chief are being questioned

by members of the firefighters union as that department faces major budget cuts. witnesses say these pictures here show the fire chief filling up his personal car last saturday. he says he's doing nothing wrong and that free gasoline is part of his compensation for being on call 24 hours seven days a week. that doesn't sit well with the firefighters union. >> they've had to close fire stations. they've had to layoff firefighters and eliminate positions. and now you have a department head that is able to use city fuel for all of his personal activities. >> ktvu looked at the chief's contract. it shows a $250 a month private vehicle allowance but not a specific perk for gasoline. the chief says that gas perk was part of the verbal agreement but says he's willing to renegotiate his contract. 6:26. a new law forcing a small but

critical safety change is prompting the shut down of several pools in alameda county. the concern is with main drain on the floor of the pools. state and federal laws that went into full effect july 1st require all public pools to replace old drain covers with new ones. >> old covers were tend to be a little more flat. i think one of the problems associated with that was that there might be a possibility of a suction hazard. >> alameda county has shut down an average of 10 pools a week since the law went into effect. inspectors in all other bay area counties are only warning public pools and spas they must make the change by the end of the summer or face closure. cal train says one of the bay area's most scenic highways is also one of the most dangerous. they've drawn up plans to widen the road to help reduce accidents. it's also known as highway 84.

cal tran says there are almost 60 accidents on it over a three year period. many of them head on collisions. they hope to widen it and straighten out curves to make it safer. coming up next on ktvu morning news, arson investigators trying to figure out who started a fire at vacaville high school overnight. coming up how students will be effected. and hopeful singers are lining up by the hundreds in san francisco at this hour for a shot at "american idol."

now that the sun is up we can show you there's only one portable effected in the fire, but you can see what firefighters pulled out of it. these are a couple of three sauces. they have witnesses who saw someone leave the high school after the fire broke out and they'll be reviewing surveillance video later today. the fire broke out at vacaville high school around midnight. a neighbor called 911 and firefighters arrived to find flames in the one of the portables. it destroyed several computers. police have a person they want to question in this case but do not want to release too much information just yet. someone may have thrown something flammable through the window to start the fire. firefighters arrived quickly and put out the flames before the flames could spread. a team was then called to the scene. >> this fire does look suspicious in nature. we took the precautions and have the arson investigators

investigating the crime along with the police department and we had our crime our csi team come out to collect evidence. >> reporter: school started a few weeks ago but vacaville police say the damage should not keep classes from resuming today. we'll have to wait to see what the school district decides. i have contacted the school, we are waiting to hear back this morning. classes begin about 7:50. coming up more on the tools investigators will be listing to find out who set the school on fire last night. live in vacaville this morning. ktvu channel 2 news. there's a warning this morning and security will be tighter today for students at briarwood elementary school in santa clara. more police will be posted at the school on towns end avenue after vandals scrolled graffiti threating to set off a bomb tomorrow. this is new video into our studios a couple minutes ago. the threat was discovered

august 4th. the school superintendent found send out a letter on monday telling parents of the extra precautions. police in fairfield are trying to identify a robber who wore a wig and a fake beard while robbing a clothing store on monday night. the man who robbed the clothing store on west texas was reportedly african-american, about 6'1" weighing 180 pounds. he was wearing black clothing and a shoulder length wig and a fake goatee. nobody was hurt. fairfield police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. we will know later this morning if a major bust of pot farms in western marin county will continue into a second day. federal, state and local law enforcement descended in force on the area along the north slope of mt. tamalpais yesterday. the marin county sheriff's department says the raids are in response to an alarming

trend of people coming into contact with armed pot growers. time now 6:34. this is a big day for "american idol" hopefuls. auditions officially get underway in san francisco this morning. ktvu is right in the middle of it. tara just talked with the show's producers. so what did you find out? >> reporter: well, right now, dave, they are doing some of the production elements of the show. the supervising producer is standing on to have of this ladder. this big thing right here that they're going to be panning over the crowd. and if you watch the show you know there's a big hovering shot that they use every season. that is what they're going to be doing right now. so the crowd is on its feet. they're all excited and they're going to be giving hoots and hollers and waving hands around. now 80,000 people -- [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: that was a

practice run. now they're going to do the actual thing here in a couple minutes. there are 8,000 people here to audition for idol this morning. in jersey city and nashville the numbers are actually double that. we spoke to the supervising producer earlier this morning who says that's not unusual. >> previously on idol the south and east coast is always our biggest turn out. west coast not always the biggest turn out but at the end of the day it's about quality over quantity. >> reporter: now adam lam bert last season's runner up or actually two seasons ago was discovered here in san francisco. as was william if you remember the she bangs guy. those auditions are set to get underway this morning around 10:00. "american idol" crews will be letting all of these potential contestants through between 7:30 and 8:30 to line up for their crack at stardom. they'll be headed to the middle of the field. they'll do a bunch of auditions separately. and then if they make it past this round, they'll advance to

two more. that is when they actually get their golden ticket and then on their way to hollywood. we did have a chance to speak to beau bice a couple minutes ago. we'll tell you what he had to say advice for contestants. we are getting ready in a couple moments ryan see crest is supposed to be walking out for the production shot. we'll capture that and bring it to you live. >> all right. time now 6:37. san francisco police say they have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a stabbing on a muni bus on monday. police arrested kyle clark of san francisco tuesday night. investigators say the victim a 35-year-old man says he saw the suspect and the young woman arguing at the back of the 29 sunset bus and he tried to intervene when clark slapped the woman. the victim was stabbed several

times. his wounds though are not life threatening. police were able to identify clark from the bus' surveillance video. if the state legislature passes this month parents could face jail time and hefty fines if their kids skip school. the oakland school district reports nearly 18% of its students in kindergarten through the eighth grade missed at least five full days of school without excused absences in the past school year. parents can now face misdemeanor charges if the children miss 10% of the school year if the legislature passes that legislation. it is 6:38. the owners of jelly's dance club in san francisco were supposed to be out of the city owned building at midnight, but the club's lawyer says they are not going anywhere. the club on pier 50 has been the scene of three shootings in three years including one on july 19th. city officials say jelly's failed to improve security and gave them until midnight last night to vacate the building. jelly's owners have gone to

court claiming the port terminated their lease only after they discovered pipes belonging to the port were leaking into the bay. time now 6:38. the roller coaster at six flags discovery kingdom broke down half way through the ride yesterday. that started an hour long ordeal for the passengers on board. >> we got up there and we stopped. i was like we're just probably stopping for a quick moment. >> 26 people were on the boomer an coast to coaster as it started its second reverse move up and back. a 12 story high part of the track, when it got stuck just before 2:00 p.m. a woman riding with her children claims the park was slow in responding. that led her to use her cell phone to call the front office. >> i was more concerned about the heat and them being stuck with no water. kids dehydrate pretty quickly. >> park employees brought water to the riders and tried to entertain them until the

mechanics were able to get the coaster working again. stranded riders were given free passes and allowed to move to the front of the line on other rides. at least they weren't stuck in the upside down position. that would have been really bad. 6:39. let's see if things are moving in oakland right now. sal. >> that would have been really cool being stuck upside down. >> i would have hated it. >> good morning everybody. let's go out and take a look at 880 north and southbound. the traffic is doing very well. no problems there as you drive up to the downtown oakland area. no problems on the way to the bay bridge and of course we watch that for you. there was earlier a back up but that's gone. right now should be a pretty decent drive for you into san francisco. if you're driving on the peninsula we keep watching that for you to see if traffic's getting busier and highway 92 is lit up with slow traffic in both directions. and of course we keep watching the livermore valley commute where it's slow on the at month pass but better into livermore.

6:40. here's steve. thank you, sal. good morning. a little change today. yesterday we had the high overcast. we had some tweets from the coast saying i can see finally. now that fog has come back in. so it's more compressed today on the deck more. it will burn off sooner and inland areas will warm up. that system that came in and cleared everything out but also kicked up the breeze in the afternoon some pretty blustery conditions most of the day. cooled the inland areas down. ejected out towards the east that's allowed high pressure to build in for one day. one day. it's going to move in and then a really strong cooling trend into the weekend. 64 san francisco. average is 68. the record 91 in 1995. oakland 72. close to average but still below. santa rosa 79. getting closer. average is 82. mountain view 75. should be 77. so close. san jose 79 should be 84. so even with the warm up we're still below average on these high temperatures.

53 san raphael cloudy. they're the only ones that say clear. 38 up in tahoe. that system went by into oregon left behind a signature with some cool air as well. that has settled into the high country. you can see the dividing line there. 80s already on the desert. warmer in southern california. some of the water temperatures have warmed up a bit. it's not as cold. still though series of lows and a stronger one moving into the picture out of the gulf of alaska. they're going to take that high that's moving over us today and they'll say get out of here and bump it out of here. that means a cooling trend really flying. noticeable probably on friday and then really big time on saturday. i think it will be strong enough to wipe out the fog bank but sunday even though sunny it will be windy. fog, mist this morning and then sunny for most especially away from the coast. santa cruz had a decent warm up this week. 70s around the bay. upper 70s and then mid to upper

good morning. welcome back. a quick look at some of the stories we're following for you right now. 6:45. san francisco police looking for two men in connection with a deadly shooting at jones street. those two men last seen running from the scene. police did recover a semiautomatic weapon from a nearby mailbox that they say was probably used in that shooting. a company in iowa has dramatically expanded its recall of potentially tainted eggs. we're also finding out more about salmonella cases here in the bay area connected to that egg recall. reportedly more than 100 people have become sick here in the bay area. and the united states has reached a milestone in the more than seven year iraq war. the last of the combat troops have left iraq. they've crossed into kuwait.
