dave clark. >> police are working an overnight fire that broke out at midnight on campus. we have jae hernandez with more. >> reporter: we moved to the back of the school last night. you can see the insulation that has been pulled out of it. firefighters believe someone threw something flammable through the window. a neighbor saw the fire and stalled for help. they saw someone leaving the area after the fear broke out. joining us this morning is the principal of the high school. thank you for joining us this morning. can you tell us a bit about what authorities told you? >> they called me after midnight from the police department. let me turn my phone off. >> reporter: i'm shower a lot -- i'm sure a lot of people

camera video. they have witnesses as well. they do have a person ever interest that they -- a person of interest. they want to keep the investigation ongoing. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. trouble at another school. there is a warning this morning and security will be tighter today for students at briarwood elementary. more police will be at the area after vandals scrawled graffiti on a school door threatening to setoff a bomb tomorrow. the threat was discovered august 4th. a letter went home to parents telling them about the precautions the school is taking. time is 7:03. ious are looming on the california's horizon. the state comptroller says california is about to run out

of money and he will have to issue ious to contractors that do business with the state. california is facing a $19 billion budget shortfall. this is the second consecutive year ious have been issued. furlough fridays are back. they will take effect tomorrow for most state employees. the state supreme court sided with governor arnold schwarzenegger yesterday. furloughs can resume at least for now. this will affect 134,000 state employees. it is also expected to take a big toll on state services, including the dmv. >> we have had customers who are crying because they cannot get their registrations cleared because there are no workers in sacramento to do all of this work. >> the governor wants three unpaid days off a month. that is expected to save the

state about $150 million. they are expected to continue while the court reviews if the governor has the authority to enforce the furloughs. arguments are set to begin on september 8th. we are learning of more salmonella cases in the bay area. there are reportedly 25 cases in san francisco. 16 cases in alameda county. 22 cases in contra cosa county. so far, no deaths have been reported. >> i think i saw a case of fever and diarrhea and vomiting. you get sick a couple of days. the disease is more severe for susceptible people. >> the recall has been

make this a political issue by some. i join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded. >> critics responded by saying house speaker nancy pelosi was trying to intimidate those who oppose the project. she said she was not calling for a formal investigation. she was just saying there was a need for transparency. 7:17. the city of san francisco has joined the lawyers who sued to overturn the state's ban on gay marriage in an attempt to recover legal costs. papers were filed this week. the city was asked to extend the deadline for reimbursement of attorney fees. those suing to overturn proposition 8 say they will seek to recover the attorney fees from prop 8 supporters, but only if the lower court decision is upheld. the contract dispute with the transit and unions is heading back to court.

the transit directors voted to appeal the court order for the sides to use a mediator to settle. the mediations are expected to start tomorrow. they will appeal a separate order as well. 7:18. the lease is support at jelly's dance club in san francisco. the club's lawyer says jelly's is not going anywhere. the club on pier50 has been the scene of several shootings. jelly's failed to improve security. they had until midnight to vacate the building. the owners went to court saying the contract was terminated illegally. noxious odors could cost the city hundreds of thousands

7:29. right now, san francisco police are searching for two men in connection with a deadly overnight shooting in the city's tenderloin district. the victim was found in the middle of jones street after midnight. police say he had been shot several times. the two suspects ran from the scene, but police recovered a semiautomatic weapon that may have been used in the shooting. the gun was dumped in a mailbox just a block away. santa rosa police are investigating a rock attack that injured a 13-year-old girl. it was reported on west 9th street yesterday afternoon in

santa rosa. the attack was carried out by an apparent street gang. there were four other people in the car, but they were not hurt. the suspects fled the scene. 7:30. federal and state and local law enforcement agencies may continue more raid on illegal marijuana farms in western marin county. we don't know the exact locations, but roads into the area at tempe lake north of mount tam were closed yesterday. the sheriff's office says these raids are in response to the alarming trend of people coming into contact with armed pot growers. 7:31. the catholic church's handling of sex abuse cases is the subject of one lawsuit now in the hands of the alameda county superior court. the lawsuit accuses the disease

church officialswere negligent in allowing him to work with children. first time unemployment claims hit the highest level in nine months. jobless claims jumped 12,000 to 500,000. economists were expecting a drop. this renews concerns of the pace of the economic recovery. continuing claims fell by 13,000 to 4.48 million. analysts say some of that may be because people are just discouraged and they stopped looking for new jobs. intel announced it is buying security softwaremaker macafee. intel will pay $7.7 billion cash. that is a 62% premium over yesterday's closing price. the board of both companies

taking a live look at the board on wall street. not a great morning. stocks are falling after weekly claims for unemployment. the weekly claims jumped to 500,000 this week. this is offsetting news of intel buying macafee for $6.6 billion. nasdaq is down 31 points this morning. a gm executive who overseas global research and development

is at the lab in livermore. he is expected to tell workers that research done at the lab will make future vehicles more fuel efficient. gm has finally filed the first paper work for the initial public offering of stock. the filing is the first step for gm executives to regain control of the company. right now, the government owns 61% of gm after bailing out the automaker last year. gm believes it could raise $16 billion which would be enough money to pay back some loans and give it majority control of the company. no stock sale date has been set. time now is 7:47. lawmakers are investigating the effect of the bp oil disaster on the seafood industry in the gulf of mexico. the house energy committee will hold a hearing later this morning on making sure that seafood is safe to eat.

in the meantime, admiral thad allen, who is the point person on the clean up for the government, says the bottom kill could begin after labor day. >> we have agreed to a sequence of actions that i'll direct bp to take. starting out with flushing out the blowout preventer. actually move to put a new preventer on and do the bottom kill. >> allen is defending a government report that shows 75% of the oil is either evaporated or disbursed or collected. he says he expects the bottom kill could begin the week after labor day. 7:48. a new study released this morning shows children who were exposed to pesticides before they were born are more likely to develop attention disorders years later. the uc berkeley study found the

organic phosphate pesticides were harmful for children up to the age of 5. it followed 300 childrens and families. the consumer product safety commission is recalling a double stroller that can collapse and harm the children riding in them. so far, there are reports of 185 land zooper tango strollers collapsing. two children have been hurt. the strollers were sold in 2007 and 2008 at babies r us stores. they cost about $400 each. you should stop using the strollers immediately and contact the company for a repair kit. you can find recall information on our web site at ktvu.com. time is 7:49. pg and eis looking at a number of potential sites away from

here last night. authorities will review sweaunts video not only from the school but from a private residence later today. firefighters arrived to find one of the portables on fire. there were computers, books burned. firefighters quickly put out the flames before they could spread. >> there were surveillance cameras in the area and we're also looking at the possibility that surveillance cameras that private residents have that face that direction. we're asking if anyone has any knowledge of this, that they come forward and contact the police department. >> reporter: school started a few weeks ago, the principal told us that damage here won't preclude students from attending here. several students are already here. one student attends english in the school portable. >> i love the school. there's a lot of great people

4th. a letter went automatic by the school notifying the parents about the extra precautions briarwood is taking. the school will be open tomorrow while police make their patrols. ious are looming on the horizon. john chiang said the state is about to run out of money and he will have to start to issue ious to businesses who contract with the state if the budget is not passed soon. california facing a $19 billion shortfall. the budget is now 50 days overdue. this would be the second consecutive year io us are issued. because of the late budget, the governor has been fighting to keep furlough fridays and now a judge has given him the green light. that means many state workers will not be at work tomorrow, nor will they get paid. the state supreme court ruled that the furloughs can resume, at least for now, this affects about 144,000 employees.

it's also expected to take a big toll on state services, including the dmv. >> we've had customers crying because they cannot get their registrations cleared because there are no workers in sacramento who can do all of this work. >> the governor wants three unpaid days off a month, which is expected to save the state about $150 million. these furlough fridays are expected to continue while the court reviews whether the governor has the authority to enforce them. arguments in the case are scheduled to begin on september 8th. we're getting new information this morning about even more cases of salmonella here in the bay area connected to that massive egg recall. there are reportedly about 25 salmonella cases in san francisco, 16 cases in alameda county, 22 cases in contra costa county, eight cases in san mateo county, and 38 cases in santa clara county. so far, no deaths have been

reported. >> fever, diarrhea, vomiting. they get sick for a couple of days and usually they will recover. the disease is much more severe in the more susceptible people. >> this egg recall now includes 380 million eggs all over the country. the health department's recommending just throw the eggs away or return the recalled eggs because even the shells themselves can be contaminated. to find the product numbers of the eggs and the use-by dates go to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. we've got all of that information. it's posted under the "right now" section. it's 8:05. are looking for, tara? >> reporter: hopefully talent. we've seen a lot of people out here pulling gimmicks. a guy was on stilts, a girl was dressed up like supergirl. people are really pulling out all of the stops because they want to make it to the next round. there's nobody out here anymore. everything has filed into the stadium to begin the process. and that process will start, we're told, at approximately 10:00 this morning. there are 8,000 people auditioning here in san francisco. now, according to producers, that's a very large number for the city. typically, they say, the turnout is much larger in the south and on the east coast. >> traditionally on "idol" the south and east coast is always the biggest turnout. west coast, not really the biggest turnout. but at the end of the day, it's really about quality, not

quantity. >> reporter: adam lambert, the runner-up two seasons ago, is from the bay area. as far as the judges go, there's been a lot of talk about this this season. apparently, steve tyler, the lead singer of's row smith, will be taking simon cowell's spots. jennifer lopez was in -- was reportedly talking about being a judge but that apparently fell through. everybody is going to be going inside the stadium. they are gonna be lining up and they will all be broken up into sections and they will be getting their chance at stardom. if they make it here -- through here, they will end up going to hollywood. coming up later in the show, we'll hopefully be talking to ryan seacrest. he did appear here earlier this

confirmed iraqi cashew tills but the estimates range from 50,000 to as many as 600,000. back here, national guard troops are about to be deployed to the california/mexico border. this group will be the first of 224,000 national guardsmen to be assigned there. it's part of the president's plan to employ 1200 national guardsman along several border states. the troops will spend a year helping out the states to prevent illegal border crossings and smugglings. house speaker, nancy pelosi, is clarifying comments she made about plans to build a mosque near ground zero. she says the local mosque zoning is an urban and development center that new yorkers should decide for themselves. she also called for an investigation to see who is funding the opposition to the mosque. >> but there's no question that there is a concerted effort to make this political a -- to

make this a political issue by some. i join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded? >> critics responded by saying speaker pelosi was trying to intimidate those who oppose the project. she issued a statement saying she was not calling for a normal -- formal investigation. she was just saying there was a need for transparency. mortgage rates have fallen again to a brand-new low. mortgage buyer freddie mac says the average rate for a 30-year fixed loan this week is 4.42%. that's down from last week's record-setting 4.44%. it's now the lowest rate it's been since freddie mac began keeping track back in 1971 and the average rate on a 15-year fixed loan dropped to a record low of 3.9%. the low rates are considered a sign that investors are concerned about the weak economy. 8:18. the city of san francisco has

joined the attorneys who sued to overturn the ban on gay marriage in an effort to recover legal costs. papers were filed this week and the city has asked the court to extend the deadline for getting reimbursement -- reimbursement of legal fees. those suing to overturn proposition 8, as well as the city of san francisco, say they will seek to recover attorney fees from prop 8 supporters. but only if the court's decision is upheld and the ban on gay marriage is thrown out. well, the contract dispute between ac transit and its yoon is headed back to court. directors voted yesterday to appeal a court order for the two sides to use a mediator to settle the dispute. the mediation is expected to begin tomorrow. ac transit says it will comply while the appeal is considered. ac transit will also appeal a separate order, one that blocks them from imposing new work

school is in session at vallejo high school at this hour, despite an overnight fire there. it started about midnight inside of a portable classroom on the campus. ktvu's jade hernandez joining us now and i know you've been out there talking to students. so what are they saying, jade? >> they are pretty shocked about what happened. authorities say this fire was intentionally set. they have witnesses and surveillance video which they hope will lead them to the person responsible. i can tell you this morning, this is the window which someone threw in which was flammable. only one class portable burned. they believe it burned around midnight last night. the principal told us firefighters worked quickly enough overnight that flames did not spread to the other portables next year. the sergeant from the vallejo

intentionally set. >> thank you, jade. santa rosa police are investigating a rock attack that injured a 13-year-old girl. now, this was reported on west 9th street yesterday afternoon. it was carried out according to police by an apparent street gang. police say they threw rocks and metal objects at a passing car that injured that 3-year-old girl. there were four other people in the car but they were not hurt. the suspects escaped the scene. it is 8:32. this morning, the labor didn't reported first-time unemployment claims sit the -- hit the highest level in nine months. they jumped from 12,000 to 550,000. economists were expecting a drop. continuing claims fell by 13,000 to 4.48 million but analysts say some of that may be because people are discouraged and have stopped looking for new jobs. just about two hours ago, santa clara-based intell

and if street food is not to your taste, maybe you can go european. brittish grocer, fresh and easy, is coming here to the bay area. the chain opened stores in southern california four years ago. now they're venturing north with seven stores opening next year. now, they will -- there will be locations in san francisco's bayview neighborhood and others in san jose, danville, pacifica, walnut creek, concord and vallejo. fresh and easy says they want to change consumer habits. they have nearly 5,000 stores around the world. drivers who have had fastrack for at least eight years may want to think twice before dialing the toll-free number. it turns out the fastrack transpoerders purchased before 2002 have a customer service number that goes to a fon sex line. the metropolitan transportation commission says the number worked when it was issued but was picked up by a phone sex company when fastrack changed

there were frightening moments in spain with the bulls. at least 30 people were hurting, including a child who was hospitalized. the animal was eventually shot to death. later today, a controlled burn will take place inside the golden gate national recreation area, north of the golden gate bridge. the fire is intended to burn off nonnative plants near ft. berry. rangers hope that will allow plants needed by an endangered butterfly species to grow back. the number of mission blue butterflies is climbing. rangers say they won't know how successful today's burn is until next spring when they see what plants sprout. 8:55. there is a new uc berkeley

study that just came out this morning that shows children who were exposed to pesticides before they were born are more likely to develop attention disorders later this year. the study concludes that the prenatal levels of the organo pesticides afictsed more boys -- effected more boys -- affected boys more. this will be the 0th year the city is hosting this event that will feature food and art and music including performances by mc hammer and en vogue, just to name a few. tickets are $15 at the gate. it runs through sunday. but the organizers are actually starting to shut down streets today getting ready for the event. play street between 11th and
