officials say a bomb threat was called in to a business in alameda. that business owner called authorities. as soon as the threat became known, the american airlines 767 was diverted from takeoff and moved to a runway. there the plane sat for hours. persons said they weren't told why the mean was being held. >> we were on the runway ready

to takeoff, in position. then we just accelerated slowly. and we were already, you know, two or three hours behind. then the captain came on and said, "the tower has told us we have to go back to the gate." i don't know why. they won't tell us. >> two came, in went straight to the back row, took off two people, a young guy, young girl. they were in front of us checking. in they were probably 18, 19 years old, 18, 19 years old. >> this is cell-phone video of people looking at activity in the back of the plane. police later told us the two people detained were determined not to be involved with a threat. threat. the passengers and crew were detained from a luggage claim area. one of the passengers told us he was happy to be safe on the

unlikely to be charged. that's according to a source who says the orlando police department is simply now, quote, "trying to move on and learn from the scandal." ktvu learned a source close to the investigation is, quote, "very confident" that the state attorney general will not file charges. the retired san francisco police crime lab technician accused of stealing cocaine and other drugs while on the job. the source says it's unlikely the ag's office is unwilling to spend time to prosecute maddox. we learned the investigation centered on a special type of paper found in the house. it is specifically used to wrap narcotics for testing. a source says san francisco investigators, quote, "put all their eggs in one basket, like choosing to focus on the paper as proof maddox stole from the job." >> i have not seen in the

evidence that. >> kevin cashman and investigative commander john lopis this week were demoted. they and morris deback, expected to retire later this year had roles in supervising or investigating the troubled crime lab. a source says disciplinary charges are expected against others at the crime lab. the assistant chief declined to talk today about personnel issues, but said the department is focused on rebuilding the lab. >> after overseeing the lab investigation, there were definitely warning signs a long time ago that i think would have made a difference as far as if the warning signs had been look at. a spokesperson late this afternoon told us their investigation is continuing, and said they're still reviewing evidence in the deborah madden case. police chief george gas cone is set to hold a press conference

tomorrow to address the status of the lab. madden still faces charges in san mateo county for possession of a small amount of cocaine. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu, channel 2 action news. with job data sent shivers down wall street today. the dow jones down 144 points at the closing bell. the nasdaq shed almost 37 points. a showdown in factory production and a disappointing jobs report has increased speculation that the economy may be headed for a more significant slowdown heeding to today's selloff. investors rattled by a report that new applications for unemployment benefits rose to 500,000 last week. an increase of 12,000 people out of work. there were 488,000 claims the previous week. here in california, 4,393 more people applied for jobless benefits. the labor department says the numbers show employers are still cutting jobs as the economy weakens. santa $a based intel is

making an historic acquisition. it announced today it would buy mcafee for $7.68 billion, more than it's ever paid before. intel says the deal will help it improve products for mobile phones, tvs and other devices and allow intel to sell security software. both company's board of directors have approved the deal. mcafee shareholders must sign off. there is more grim news today for bay area home sales. the real estate tracking firm said sales plummeted 22.8% last month compared to a year ago to reach its lowest level in 15 years. 6,773 homes were sold as a federal tax credit for first- time buyers expired. sales also fell 19.1% from june. consumer editor tom bay car is live with more of the impact from the sales slump. tom? >> as people become more and more spookt by bad economic news, they've also wised up.

>> reporter: in this recently completed development, there are several once-occupied but now empty homes for sale. rates are at a record low, and prices are way down from the peak, but golden gate university's school president said, with businesses gone, there's no need to worry. >> some are holding on to their wallets hoping and expecting mortgage rates to go lower. they're probably right. >> generally what it takes to get people to pull the trigger is a reason to do it now. i don't think consumers see a reason to do it now. they feel like interest residents continue to stay low. >> reporter: one of the big drivers in the bay area housing market is the fact that many people were able to take the equity they earned in their current hopes to trade up to a better home. but with so many homes underwater, that market is pretty much gone, leaving the market primarily to fox, first- time buyers who can manage to get a home or those with enough cash to buy a home out right.

police say the teenager gunned down after 10:00 this morning at acohi street and west mcdonald avenue. investigators say the boy, whose identity has not been released was waiting for a family member. they say two men approached the victim, shot him and were last seen running east on mcdonald's avenue. san francisco police say they've recovered the gun used to kill a man in a neighborhood this morning. police say the man was killed at intelligence street and 0 fairly around 12:30 this morning. the gun stashed in a mailbox. police say they're looking for two men expected in the shooting. they say it began with a fight between three men. police say the victim punched the man in the face and the suspect opened fire. today 13 santa $a law enforcement agencies dedicated their labor day dui enforcement to a four-year-old boy killed last month by a drunk driver. on july 11th jose cortez diaz

latest incident. john? >> . >> reporter: jim san francisco police are right now trying to find someone who's been making crank calls. these are not harmless calls. they're reporting major crimes that are not taking place. >> at about this morning, the famous grill on california street became the latest victim. >> saw four or five officers came around the corner, guns drawn. thought it was a bank robbery or heist. >> reporter: instead it was a man on the roof shooting at people below. >> i started walking down california. there were several officers, all guns drawn, pointing at several buildings. of course they pointed at me and said, "you need to get out of here." >> reporter: in this video shot by a man working across the street, you can see the scene that continued for a few minutes. >> you just try to duck and cover at the same time, i guess. >> ducking and covering while you're doing some business, actually. >> trying to. trying to maintain a calm. >> reporter: police quickly figured out it was a crank call

despite the attempt by the caller to make it sound relate. >> the caller stated there was a shooting accidentally going on, that they allegedly heard gunshots in the ground. >> reporter: officers took over the -- >> police knocked on the door and told us to open the door. there were a couple of employees here, and they pushed us and asked if anybody had a gun. obviously we didn't. >> reporter: the nape of the call and election of the crime also conjured up memorys of the so 1 california shooting in 1993, all the more reason that police are concerned. >> due to the nature of the crime, you know, we want to make sure that we do a proper investigation and there's hope that it pulls our resources away from other true emergencies going on in the city and people who really do need help. >> reporter: police add that the phone number of that the call came from was the same number used in a similar hoax at a hotel last month. the number police don't want released to the public brings up multiple hits on the web

with comments about crank calls. live, on john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 action news. an out break caused by tainted eggs may be worse than we know. today officials say illnesses that happened after july may not have been reported yet. so far the eggs are link to 2,000 illnesses nationwide, including more than 100 in the bay area. also today a lawsuit stemming from the out break was extended to include a farm in iowa. the farm has recalled system 0 million eggs. for more information, go to our web site at ktvu.com. the battle against a european grapevine moth is growing. the quarantine expanded into san joaquin county, bringing the total to just under 2,000 square miles. some people who grow grapes for pleasure were already asked to strip their violence or treat them with organic pesticide. host plants include stone fruit trees. residents being told to keep the fruit on their property so the pests aren't inadvertently

transported. new evidence shows the moon may be slinging slowly. s a strong customers from the airspace museum found cracks in the moon's crust that formed a billion years ago. they indicate a slight decrease in size though it's not noticeable with the naked eye. they were found by scientists who examined thousands of photographs of the moon's surface. bill martin has the day off, here to tell us about the nice warm, but foggy weather. >> that's right. in fact, the fog regrouping right now, making a role in our forecast over the next one to two days. on the maps, i can show you a look at the fog from up above. fog in in a portion of the bay area shoreline. looks like some clearing out toward belli inas. the cloud deck not too far away. here's a closer inspection at this can, also from san francisco. at least a good portion of san francisco under the clouds. downtown looks like we still have mostly clear skies. but the fog bank will be moving

in over the next hour or so. as far as current temperatures, you can see a big range, lower 60s in san francisco, not too much of a change from yesterday, but big change, we're talking about 90s today for fairfield and livermore. san jose topped out at 83, santa rosa, mid 80s and napa around 80 degrees. in fact, here's a at the fog up above. you can see the clouds pushing into the bay. we basically have a big layer of warm air compressing the fog closer to the surface, warming up, up for the interior today. the weather story is this: fog increases for the night, cooler for tomorrow. the extended forecast, this is somewhat of a change. we will warm things back up. you see that monday and tuesday of next week. as far as temperatures for tomorrow, we are going in the other direction, lower 60s for the beaches, indications inland, no more 90s. the warmest location on stack to reach the lower 80s. as far as the forecast for walnut creek, clearing skies, temperatures tomorrow morning with partly cloudy conditions.

underwater plume of oil. something stinks at the airport in san jose. a mysterious sewer-like smell has been wafting through the airline offices at the newly renovated terminal a. city officials tried several methods to eliminate the smell, pumping smoke through the plumbing and even inserting video camera to check for leaks. >> we have found some leaks. we have fixed them. but the odor comes back several days later. >> the airport plans to conduct another smoke test and says it won't stop until it finds the source of its smell. in the meantime it's resorted to big fans, machines and propping the doors open to make the stench more bearable for workers. luckily the passengers have had no complaints. a carjacking suspect led police ins there on chase that went from city streets to an airport runway. several officers were slowly following the suspect in the gray puck-up truck. the suspect drove onto a runway before police stopped them on a

with the state budget two months overdue you would expect getting a budget complete would be a top priority. instead lawmakers seem more focused on dealing with the fiscal problems of a small city in southern california. ktvu's ken pritchard is live with details. >> legislation that's likely to be popular. but with full loads continuing and ious perhaps weeks away, some are wondering why so little seems to be happening on our long overdue budget. today in the assembly, members voted on a laundry list of bills that are raised to beat a looming deadline. democrats vowed to crack down on exorbitant salaries paid to elect officials as seen in the city.

this as the budget clock keeps ticking. the budget is now 50 days overdue. >> it's mind-boggling and ridiculous. >> reporter: joan and don were touring the capital today and questioning if lawmakers have their priorities straight. >> not if they're dealing with a municipality, rather than a state government. >> reporter: assembly speaker john perez announced a bipartisan effort to crack down on overpaid city officials, but dismissed the notion lawmakers should instead be focused on the budget. >> i don't think we should hold out creating the reforms that are essential just because we haven't resolved all of the elements of the budget yet. >> we think what's happened is absurd, outrageous and should be fixed, but it's just a drop in the bucket compared to what's going on. >> schwarzenegger says lawmakers should focus on reforming state employee pensions as part of a budget deal. >> if they would spend as much time on that as they are grand standing on bell, we would save hundreds of billions of dollars in the state. >> but perez says, unlike the

bell bills, the bipartisan support for a budget is simply not there. >> so the urgency there there on my part. i'll hopeful it's there on the governor's part. >> reporter: there has not been a big meeting that includes the governor and the four legislative leaders since mid- june. the budget gap stands at about $19 billion. in sacramento, ken pritchard, ktvu, channel 2 action news. more than a billion dollars in federal aid to save jobs is headed to california later this month. but there are concerns the money may not go where it's intended. the emergency funding aims to save 16,000 teaching jobs. both the senate and assembly leaders have proposed siphoning off some of the money to bring down the state budget deficit. senator barbara boxer said the funding could only be used to save education, jobs and nothing else. the number of workplace deaths has fallen to it lowest level in 20 years. according to the bureau of labor statistics, there were

4,340 on-the-job fatalitys in 2009, 10% lower than 2008, and the lowest level since 1992. labor officials say high unemployment and layoffs in more dangerous industries, such as construction played a major role in the decrease. the brother of giants right fielders nate shatterholds pleaded not guilty to a series of charges stemming from a hit and run collision in danville. kayman shatterholts will face trial on four charges, including one felony count of drunk driving. police say he was intoxicated when he hit a pedestrian, a bicyclist, a light pole and two vehicles august 1st. four people were jury. shatterholts is due in court again on september 3rd to set a date for a preliminary hearing. all the lens of 580 west in oakland are back open this hour after an accident before noon. two vehicles involved, a truck that rolled over and a car that was sent down an embang. highway patrol officers tell us it may have been caused bay driver making a last-minute

attempt to get onto a highway 13 ramp. the highway patrol told us no one was seriously hurt. police in vacaville trying to figure out who started a fire at vacaville high school. flames break out in a portable classroom on campus. police say some video of the crime may help them solve the case. jay hernandez has the story. >> it's disappointing. we've work very hard, have a great start to the school year. to have something like this get in the way is disappointing. >> reporter: he rushed to the school sometime after midnight. firefighters told him someone set a portable classroom on fire. fire investigators believe someone broke this window and threw something flammable inside. the principal said firefighters arrived quickly and worked fast. >> the fire department, though, did a great job. they got here right away and saved that building. it's pretty smoked inside that the build would be okay. >> he switched classes to library. a student who attended english classes told us no one would have any reason to burn it.

>> i love the school. i mean, there's a lot of great people around here, and i really couldn't think of anyone who would do this, and everyone is super nice, and just a surprise. >> the neighbor who initially felt the fire and called for help also saw someone bolting from the high school as the classroom burned. the vacaville police brought in their csi unit. >> the fire does look suspious in nature. so we took the precautions and had the arson investigators investigating the crime along with the police department, and we had our crime -- our csi team come out to collect evidence. >> reporter: police say they have someone in more they want to question in particular about this fire, but first they'll review surveillance video not only from the school, but nearby residents. in vacaville, jay hernandez, ktvu, channel 2 action news. something disappearing from the silver screen, cigarette. a new study shows there are fewer smoking scenes from movies in recent years. the study looked at tobacco use in popular films from 1991 to 2009. movies released last year had

about half the number of smoking scenes compared to movies released in 2005 when on- screen smoking was at its peak. half of last year's films showed no smoking at all and that percentage went up when looking at movies targeted specifically to children and teenagers. a new chp cell phone crackdown nabbed hundreds of drivers, including one man twice. plus phone number on some fast-twak devices is attracting attention. who you get on the other end of the line when you call it next.

this time around they issued more than a thousand tickets. officers cited more than 1,650 drivers yesterday for using their phones without a hands- free device, including reading e-mails ors. last week's campaign led to just over 950 violators. contra costa county had the most violations. one man caught twice in the span of three hours. ticket and court costs can add

up to $200 per violation. drugs a greg problem on public school campuses. the finding of the latest survey on the center of diction and drug abuse at columbia university. 26% of public school students, ages 12 to 17 say drugs are used, kept or sold at their school. on middle school campuses, that figure rose 39% from last year's survey. 5.7 million students say their campuses are drug infect. researchers say the children are more at risk to smoke, drink and have friends who use hard drugs or abuse prescription drugs. a fallout today says an increasing number of americans have the wrong idea about president obama's religion. the pew research center poll says 18% of americans incorrectly think mr. obama is muslim. that's up from 11% in march of last year. 47% of those surveyed said he is a schavenlt.

resident completed the long road to citizenship this morning. people from as many as 103 different countries took the oath of allegiance in downtown oakland and with that, became citizens of the united states. >> reporter: among the naturalized are toy yes and ame who moved from israel a few years ago. if they look proud it's because not only will they become u.s. is it isn't, but their son happened to be on stage as part of the ceremony read his prize- winning essay about america being a nation of immigrants. >> over here you can be whatever you want to be, take chances, feeding into the tapestry of diversity. >> [ applause ] . >> it was very special. i, of course, got very emotional. >> the bronx say, when they first arrived to the u.s. in the late 1990s, they never

for monday and into tuesday of next week. high pressure returns today, warming up the bay john side locations, also the interior. it will be moving out of town. so you can see the net result of the temperatures. we are cooling back down. tomorrow most areas cooling off around average, around 3 to 6 degrees for today's highs. the cooling trend will continue. in fact, by saturday, warmest locations inland into the upper 70s. a little bit of a rebound for temperatures for the second half of the weekend. if you are traveling eureka, this week, partly cloudy skies, 69 degrees, lake tahoe, sunshine in the mid 70s, los angeles mostly sunny skies. here's the heat, palm springs, sunny skies and a forecast high for both days, saturday and sunday, 109 degrees. back here in the bay area, areas of fog and some drizzle. we could have partly cloudy skies well inland. and temperatures in the low to mid 50s. . clearing skies to near the coast. a few patches left over for san francisco. still some patchy coastal fog.

officers just moments ago. they hell a news conference to update us about the threat, which they say was conveyed to them by another law enforcement agency. there had been some confusion about what kind of threat it was, about who called it in, about two passengers that were detain. >> someone made a verbal threat regarding a hijacking. subsequently, the aircraft was moved from the runway area out to a remote site where a san francisco police department dod was able to go to that aircraft site. >> reporter: now, police told us they now believe the threat was not credible, but they do say they're still investigating. again, witnesses say the people were taken off the men in handcuffs. police would not confirm the story. 106 degree passengers, 11 crew members were removed from the plane after waiting for more than throw hours on a taxiway. they were later taken back to the american airlines baggage
