>> this is ktvu channel 2news at five. >> good evening. >> we start tonight in the south bay where more than a dozen san jose residents have been forced out of their homes after a fire ripped through a condo complex. we are live in san jose tonight with why firefighters happened to be nearby. >> reporter: the fire displaced 20 people here at the complex. it broke out this morning just after 10:00, destroying two of the units, damaging a third and a 4th is closed while investigators determine if it's safe to live in. flames woke people up just after ten this morning. >> i heard the dog crying so i woke up. >> reporter: she was in the deep sleep of jet lag. she return from india friday to get ready for school starting at san jose state leaving her

parents behind. >> i looked toward my curtains and saw the shadow of the fire. i got up to look and i saw the fire coming toward the window. >> reporter: she ran down stairs and to the neighbor's house where the fire appeared to becoming from. she banged on their door but they weren't home. a neighbor who lives on the other side of the burning townhouse who took these pictures had also just woke up. >> my sister woke me up and said the fire next door -- catching on fire. >> reporter: the flames appeared to becoming the barbecue he said. the propane tank is charred but is up right tonight. >> i go into the backyard and looked and the barbecue from the propane started catching on fire. i'm calling the fire department, the whole backyard is on fire. >> reporter: investigators haven't released the cause but confirm it was accidental. it's one of the first big fires since lay us august 1st. >> this area hasn't had any

station that were closed. it affects everything when you eliminate rigs and companies. it spreads everybody thinner. then a large fire like this depletes the city more when you have a lot of units here that we needed to fight this fire. then the rest of the city is not covered as well. >> reporter: firefighters responded with in six minutes because they were training at nearby lake cunningham park. waters was left with only her wallet and a few things in her suitcases. >> just shocked. it's scary. i'm glad i got out safe before -- i'm glad i woke up. >> reporter: the red cross will help all 20 people displaced. waters will be staying friends until her parents return from india. live in san jose. ktvu channel 2news. >> light winds helping crews battle two wildfires in southern california tonight.

a fire in san diego county near lake side has destroyed more than a thousand acres. crews airlifted out ten people including hikers trapped on the mountain. the fire is now 10% contained. >> the area the area -- it burned in the 2003 and the cedar fire. we light flashy fuels. the vegetation is less than ten years old so it's not a heavy fire but a fast moving fire because of the vegetation age. >> and unless the winds pick up the forest service thinks full containment by noon tomorrow. in san luis ob isp o a fire has also been burning since yesterday. several campgrounds have been evacuated. right now the fire is 5% contained. >> the bay area is expected to feel a significant warm up in the weather this week. it's the news many have been waiting for. mark is here now with what you can call the return of summer

62 degrees. by 12:00, 89. forecast high 99 degrees. hot weather will linger into at least the five day forecast. the full forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> for the first time this summer bay area air quality managers have called a spare the air day. they will go into effect at midnight tonight and last through monday. the air district is encouraging people to drive less and reduce their energy use. people are encouraged also to work at home, or carpool and avoid using spray cleaners, painting and hair spray. there will be no free transit and unlike winter no ban on wood burning. a man in a truck put it in reverse and went through a store front window but as the video should shows it was no accident. >> reporter: you can see a glass repair crew right in the process of putting some of the finishing touches on a new

bike and left. >> reporter: guiterrez said the truck was reported stolen from a landscaping company. the burglar did get away with one bike worth about $7,000 though he wasn't able to ride it. the bike had no pedals. he had to run with the bike. >> reporter: he thinks the burglary is a sign of the times. >> people are stealing bikes and i think if they get a bike and sell it for $200 they don't care. >> reporter: one man has a bike similar to the one stolen. he keep itself secured. >> this is a 30-foot cable lock. >> reporter: he said the type of bike that was taken is very special and used only for time trials. he thinks it'll be hard to resell. >> somebody saw it for sale it would be obvious what bike it is. pretty good chance of where it came from. >> reporter: the sheriff's office is investigating this incident. they weren't able it give us

more information on camera or tell us more about the suspect in this case. however the owner of this bike shop said he has contacted all the bike and pawnshop owners in the area to let them know about this theft just in case anyone tries to resell that stolen bike. reporting live in danville, ktvu channel 2news. >> oakland police have identitied a man who was shot and killed in west oakland yesterday afternoon. they say the 26-year-old walter harris was talking to a man in a car yesterday afternoon. that's when someone walked up and fired more than two dozen rounds at them. harris was killed and the other man is in critical condition. it's not clear if both were being targeted. no arrests have been made movement a crack down on people driving under the influence in santa clara has led to more than 40dui arrests. 14 law enforcement agencies made the arrests from just after midnight frid morning

to midnight last night. officers made 72dui arrests in same period last year. the weekend crack down is part of the ongoing effort to stop drunk drivers between now and labor day. >> a power outage this morning in antioch was the result of a drunk driver. some residents said an 18-year- old crashed into a power pole on south lake drive at about 7:30 this morning splitting the pole in half. one resident took these pictures of the crash. the outage affected a few dozen customers. power will be restored by 8:30 p.m. tonight. police have not reported an arrest in this case. the sun made a rare appearance today in the ocean beach neighborhood just in time for sunday streets along the great highway. cars to make way for pedal and foot powered traffic. san francisco family from the mission said sunday street

. investigation in to the massive egg recall revealed its two iowa egg farms shared suppliers. the fda is investigating the two companies in connection to the salmonella outbreak. so far more than 550 million eggs have been recalled. the government probe found that the two farms both had ties to an iowa business that has been cited several times for violating law. the company has been identitied as quality egg which supplies young chickens and feed. about 1300 people have been sickened in the outbreak. for more information on the egg recall log onto the channel 2 website. >> the california republican convention is wrapping up today in san diego. it kicked off friday and had

speeches from meg whittman and others. they didn't endorse the arizona immigration law. members of the california republican assembly had drafted a resolution supporting but it died in committee before lawmakers could vote. the convention drew more than one thousand people this weekend. >> a key republican leader weighed in this morning on some major issues coming up as the fall midterm election approaches. he spoke on meet the press and touched on tax cuts from high ranking democrats say they will add to the deficit. he disagrees. >> look the problem is the spending problem. if we grind down the spending we will start to get a handle on this mounting debt. if you push the economy further backward we will get less revenue for the government not more. >> he said tea party candidates have had a positive

brigade has left iraq it may be years before the true outcome of the war is seen. >> reporter: with a major milestone on the horizon a general said he doesn't see a complete failure of the iraqi military happening making the case they have been doing so well for so long now. the military continues its draw down of combat forces. this week the final brigade, the 4th striker brigade drove from iraq across the border. there are a couple thousand more due to leave to get down to the 50,000 boots on the ground by the end of the month to meet a deadline set by the president ending combat operations. then the mission changes to operation new dawn and the 50,000 soldiers will be there in a more advise and assist type role securing air space and borders, training iraqis, and also doing counter terrorism operations. the general is also leaving

aimed at helping struggling homeowner social security losing steam. the home affordable program has only helped a fraction of the number of homeowners that it was supposed to but there may be a new plan to help those caught in the mortgage meltdown. >> reporter: more than 18 moisers the president announced a 75 billion-dollar program to help 3 million homeowners avoid foreclosure the initiative appears to be losing steam. according to a treasurey department report the program now looks like it'll permanently help as few as one 6th of the number. while more than 434,000 have received adjusted loans the number of those disqualified is much higher,. in fact in july 96,000 requests for adjusted loans were disqualified. that's led to more

foreclosures. more than 100,000 a month. >> i think the president does believe that housing a right, that people have a right to a home, even one they can't afford. to that end we have shuffled out the door hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to people who aren't making their mortgages. >> reporter: under the plan people can rework the mortgage and get lower payments for three moss. if they keep up the payment those can get a lower set permanently. . >> prices are no long their free fall. they might dip a bit further but we are seeing signs of them establish stabilizing. when prices in free fall lenders afraid to lend. as they get more confident in the housing market then hopefully they will be more willing to make norad justments and make more loans to the general public. >> reporter: the administration

. park police say they have identitied the man who stabbed a dog on thursday but they are not releasing his name. investigators say the 33-year- old was walk age pit bull when a woman asked him to control his dog. police say the man stabbed her dog four times before running away. the dog walkers helped investigators identity the man who has not been arrested. the woman's dog was treated at a vet hospital and released today. >> turning to weather, if you like the heat it'll return for a little short term. let's go to mark for a look at what's ahead. >> reporter: you will notice the change. especially by 10:00 tomorrow. you will walk outside and say it's warm out here. probably even on the hot side.

something finally different with clearing skies. there is the closest fog bank. it's way to the south and west. we have clear skies in the bay area. mostly sunny and a look at the latest temperature contours, the brighter colors. offer the next 24 hours we will see more of the off shore flow. with that low air gets transported to the coast. you can see a couple clear camera shots toward san francisco. 67 degrees in walnut creek right now in the mid80s. this time tomorrow walnut creek could be in the upper 09's. around 96 to 97. as far as temperatures today we started to warm up. most areas on average about a ten degree warm um. santa rosa 20 degrees warmer. san jose at 81 and antioch in the mid80s. weather story is this. mostly clear skies for tonight. major warming for monday, tuesday and into part of wednesday. wednesday we will start to cool off coast side. the extended forecast we have another round of cooler

temperatures in the forecast. as far as tomorrow here is the range with the 70's for the roast. the warmest locations inland in the mid to upper 90's. could approach 98 to 99 degrees by three or four tomorrow afternoon. this has been the dominant weather pattern over the past couple months. area of low pressure. talking a lot about the fog. for tomorrow into tuesday and into wednesday high pressure returns. that will set up the off shore flow. the fog goes away. tomorrow easily a good ten to 15 degrees warmer than today's highs and during the period fire danger will be on the increase. we don't have any red flag warnings but something to watch for monday, tuesday and wednesday. tuesday will be the hottest day especially inland but then that sea breeze returns coast side and starts to cool things off. plan for tomorrow is this. 7:00 mostly clear skies, 55 to 62 degrees. by lunchtime in the 70s all the way to the upper 80s and by 4:00 warm to hot.
