the hot spots, along the bay, oakland, hayward, temperatures down 10 to 20 degrees as fog moves up the coast. you can see the area to the left, it's weakening, the fog. it is weakening. right now i have fog off san francisco's ocean beach. i've got fog coming in around the golden gate bridge. let -- let me zoom in closer. i will show you what we're talking about. it's gonna show you that the fog kind of making its way through the gate. that's the main mechanism for some significant cooling tomorrow. here is a live camera shot. we can show you that and a little bit of a glare from the sufern. with those winds we're transporting some higher humidities to the fire zone. my colleague ken pritchett is near the curry fire, where yesterday it was a real problem. how is it doing to today, ken? >> reporter: well, right now we're standing atop a hill

overlooking the curry fire. we're here so we can keep an eye on some of these small columns of smoke remaining that are coming up from the inside of the burn zone area. this is also a location right behind us where we've seen a pair of helicopters making waterdrops all day long. from newschopper2 you can get a -- you can get a better look at the curry fire. you can see the 300 acres that have burned as a result of this fire which started late yesterday afternoon. cal fire said the curry fire right now is 90% contained. a pair of helicopters continue to work the remaining hot spots of the curry fire today. this small upwell of smoke was a farmhouse. the only structured threatened by this bi fer -- wildfire. the home was undamaged.

by this afternoon, the main task of inmate crews working this rugged terrain was to put out any remaining flames. >> they were just making sure that nothing pops up in one of the oaks or the grape vines that could be hiding from us. >> reporter: battalion steve is with a cal fire strike team. he says as of this afternoon the fire was essentially surrounded but it was changing wind patterns and the spark could reignite the curry fire. >> right now the wind is starting to come up. the heat of the day is behind us. the humidities are down. with the wind and stuff we're just making sure the fire is going to stay where it is going to stay. this is the curry fire at its peak yesterday afternoon, fueled by dry vegetation, winds and triple-digit investigators.

-- tipple digit temperatures. cal fire says whatever the cause the lesson from the curry fire is clear. a mild summer means very little when the temperatures spike. >> all it takes is unone or two very warm days and you get a fire like this. >> cal fire said there were 200 firefighters on scene. of those, two firefighters suffered very minor injuries. cal fire expects the crews to remain on the scene for another 12 to 24 hours. that's when they expect to have 100% containment on this fire just east of mount diablo in contra costa county. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. the heat is creating problems again today for b.a.r.t. riders after nearly crippling trains yesterday. about 31 train cars lost their air conditioning today while there are no delays reported right now, that wasn't the case earlier today. and today's problems came after a third of the trains yesterday saw their ac systems overwhelmed by the heat and malfunctioning equipment triggered system wide delays.

a third of the fleet has older air-conditioning units but fail when the temperatures reach above 95 degrees. >> that would be when you want them. but we're in the -- we don't always have hot days all of the time. >> b.a.r.t. says it would like to see state funding restored so it can upgrade the systems. pg&e says an increase in power-generating capacity is keeping northern california from the blackouts that were experienced ten years ago. some of those shortages were blamed on energy companies whose manipulation of the electricity supply bankrupted pg&e and resulted in fines and prison sentences for some energy brokers. pg&e says 18,000 megawatts of new power have been added to the system since two. >> investing heavily in renewable energy but also seeking to build renewable

it had seven times the number of cases during the same time last year. so far this year there have been 3300 confirmed cases statewide. health officials are urging parents to vaccinate their children and themselves to prevent the spread of the disease. oakland's board of education is meeting at this hour and had likely vogt to close seven childhood development problems because of budget problems. >> save our schools! >> they demonstrated outside the school headquarters about an hour ago. they say the closures would lead hundreds of students without before and after-school care. >> now we're worried where are our children going to be when school lets out. >> the school is working on placing students from the centers into various after- school programs but some parents are skeptical a plan will work. a labor dispute prompted garbage workers to walk off the

job today with the warm temperatures. this is not a good time to have garbage sitting out on the street. for more we go to maureen naylor live in san carlos. maureen? >> reporter: frank, it's not a pretty thought or smell here with these full garbage containers throughout 11 cities in san mateo county. the two stuffed trash bins here were supposed to be emptied this morning. today, is that why they haven't picked up my garbage? >> reporter: she was unaware that service for fer tosh dash for her and other san mateo residentings will be delayed for the next two days because of a worker strike. >> i don't know where i will put it. i will probably have to put it in the gas bin until friday. >> reporter: they walked the picket line in front of allied waste services services in san carlos after their ongoing contract talks with the company failed yesterday.

>> they are trying to take awa our pensions and cap our insurance. we settled on a pay raise but they still don't want to fix that. >> in an unexpected move, 250 garbage collectors and clerical workers from the union also walked off the job in solidarity. we were a bit surprised by that and frankly disappointed that the union would do something that would have an impact on our customers because waste collection is a health issue. the company says the lockout will enjoy 30,000 residential pickups. >> we've had enough criticism here at the picket line. but sometimes you have to do what you to have to do and hopefully bit for the better of the people. here is a look at the revised schedule. the san mateo residents will have their trash picked up on friday. friday pickups will be delayed until sunday. in the meantime, contract talks

continue. reporting live from san carlos, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco mayor gavin newsom hit the road today to announce the city aany partnership with toyota. the mayor took the new prius plug-in hybrid for a testride. san francisco has received two of these hybrids -- hybrids as part of the program and a new charging station that's been put in. >> we've got to get people out of the old combustion engine vehicles. we've got to get people into these new state of art, cleaner vehicles. a toyota executive said san francisco was chosen because it's a leader in innovative planning. american also hit the road this labor day weekend. that's the word from triple-a. the auto club is predicting 34.4 million americans will be traveling this weekend. that's almost an increase from last year of 10%. the average trip, 635 miles round-trip and 91% of the people are predicted to drive.

triple-a says more americans are ready to take a vary -- take a vacation but the bad economy is keeping them closer to home. weak was on the -- weak was the word on wall street. analysts say bargain hunters helped things recover. the biggest jolt to wall street came from the new home sales report from july which showed a 12.4% drop from june. 276,000 new homes were sold last month. that's the lowest number on record. year over year, sales were down 32.4%. industry analysts had expected to see an increase this comes a day after realtors said existing home sales dropped 27% in july. today marked the 56th day california has been trying to operate without a budget.

elder abuse because the alleged victim was over 65, among other charges. a man is in the hospital tonight with his jaw broken in two places after he and his date were attacked and robbed at a san francisco tourist attract shufn. the incident happened early saturday as the sunnyvale man and redwood city woman enjoyed the view from coit to youer with. police say two attackers knocked the man off a wall and punched and robbed a woman. police are still looking for the attackers. free councilling is being offered to people who websited a suicide to people last week during a concerts. s authorities say a man leaped from his death from a roof on to a building. the band had just finished a song. the band has now arranged for pay low alto volunteer counseling center to offer any counseling to any traumatized concertgoer. bob dylan is getting ready to sit the -- hit the stage

fans will get a commemorative ticket to remember the show. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. well, more on our weather now and in some spots around the bay area, bill, it was much cooler. >> yeah, quite a bit cooler. some areas warmer. those were the inland spots like livermore and concord. still in the low 100s. as we head out to the coast and bay certainly cooler because of this. the fog is working its way up the coast. the fire danger goes down. the air quality gets better. you can see the fog making it through the golden gate bridge right here. you know what? tomorrow, much cooler. daytime highs are gonna be a good 10, 15 degrees cooler. so a mild coast. the next couple of days with the fog returning. it will be warm inland 80s. upper 80s maybe a low 90 or too but not the 105, 106, 107 we've seen over the past few days. moving across the bay area tomorrow. a lot of 80s. now out in walnut creek.

cooler could coast already today. further cooling inland tomorrow. south on the peninsula here at mountain view. it's gonna be a cooler day, significantly cooler a good 15 degrees cooler. the fog will be showing um in the morning. by lunchtime, almost 70. 70 degrees with good air quality in mountain view tomorrow. 78 in napa. 88 in fair feel. these temperatures are certainly cooler than they have been. today, 100s all throughout the day -- all throughout the valley. 78 in campbell, 79 in san jose. cooler weather pattern headed our way. what that means is right in the bay area weekend, more fog, more clouds, some wind and an unusual weather pattern heading our way. there might be an outside chance for a sprinkle.

dozens of volunteers turned out in the south bay to help sort and pack packages for the troops overseas. members of "operation care and comfort" say even though combat troops are leaving iraq. those left behind still need help. there's still 50,000 troops in iraq and they close the all of the stores, the military stores. so these guys and girls are asking for things like toothpaste and hygiene things that we take for advantage. >> they have shipped 675,000 pounds of care packages overseas since the start -- since their start back in 2003. troops will be so happy to get all of those packages. >> uh-huh. mark joint you now. -- mark joins us now.
