6:02 am
we don't have a lot of details coming from that fire just yet. but i've been told by the san jose battalion chief out here on rock dale drive that someone should be able to update us in about 10 or 15 minutes. i want to bring you back to where i'm live. this is a two alarm fire with about 50 firefighters on scene right now. i spoke to the homeowner. he told me that his pit bull, poke coy, actually woke him up this morning. they didn't hear smoke alarms or anything. his dog saved the entire family. and they were able to get out safely. that's the good news this morning. everyone out of this home. and you can see there's not much left. it looks like the garage is pretty much gone. another neighbor told me he saw flames from that garage spread to the car and driveway. right now we don't know what caused the fire. and as i mentioned san jose firefighters are trying to work both fires. so they'll get as much information as they can to us as soon as they can and we'll bring you that information. reporting live from san jose this morning, back to you in

the studio. thank you. time now 6:02. meantime crews are really working hard at this hour trying to clean up a big sewage spill. thousands of gallons of raw sewage spilled into the redwood shores neighborhood of redwood city. ktvu's there now with the latest on that clean up. guilty or good morning, craig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. people in redwood shores in the middle of a horrible cycle. i just want to show you the one particular truck. there are many more than just that one. i'll get to that in a second. yesterday afternoon a ruptured pipe caused a sewage spill. we know that. a supervisor out here this morning say they've stopped the problem, sort of. this morning redwood city trucks and a couple contractors hired by the city are sucking sewage out of the system. that's all they've been doing since the rupture was reported at 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. this neighbor is flat so the liquid has nowhere to go except to the lowest point it can find. in this ca it's the garages of a couple homes. the trucks suck up the sewage
6:04 am
and put it back into the system at a point downstream. just goes to the plant. city trucks can hold 1,000 gallons. a private contractor i spoke with says his truck can hold 3300-gallons. the sewage is coming from homes into the system. it keeps coming because supervisors told me we can't tell people not to flush their toilets. >> i was working until late. and then i actually didn't even turn on the tv last night. >> reporter: and got up for your morning jog and saw this stuff out here. what did you think of that? tv crews and stuff. >> my first reaction was what was going on. there must be something getting fixed. and when you stopped me it made my stomach sink. >> reporter: a lot of people who live here might use a toilet. but since they're not seeing this they may not realize there's still a problem. look at this. this is the replacement pipe for the one that ruptured. right now it's sitting on grass next to the point where it happened. it's estimated 5,000 gallons spilled because of the rupture. but because the new pipe is not
6:05 am
in the ground, that number's constantly increasing. it has to. come back out live here. i want to show you this right here. see this truck right here. this is another private contractor truck. as soon as it's done sucking up the sewage out of the hole and there's one right here that's waiting in line to take its place and continue the job. this has been a constant thing all night long. so you have sewage in the system underneath the ground. it is still coming. and it will keep coming until they get the pipe in the ground. and coming up i'm going to try to ask these people here when that's going to happen. reporting live in redwood city, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight a woman escaped her home unharmed. but that's after it exploded. about 30 firefighters rushed to the home on cold harbor avenue at about 11:00 last night. neighbors say they heard a loud explosion before the home burst into flames. an elderly woman who was inside the home did make it out on her own. but firefighters were concerned because she is diabetic. firefighters say the fire started in the home's garage, but the cause is under

6:31 am
moment. [ audio problems ] one of two fires burning right now in san jose. one home is on fire on rock dale drive. the other home is on fire on dell monty place. ktvu's jade hernandez is there now. you've moved to that location. why are they telling people to stay inside, jade? >> reporter: i understand right now pg&e has been called because there's a broken gas line. many of the residents are being told to stay inside or away from this house that's burning. news chopper 2 can give you a better idea of the fire burning here. it's very smoky. we pulled up about ten minutes ago. i understand san jose firefighters are battling two fires at this hour. 30 minutes ago we were live in front of the house fire which broke out first. that was a two alarm fire. i'm going to take you there. first let's talk about this fire i just moved to. this is a three-alarm fire less than two miles away on dell monty place here in san jose. i know 70 firefighters are out here right now.
6:32 am
battalion chief told me that san jose has called for mutual aid from the county so that the department can staff their local fire house. this fire on dell monty may have ignited after an explosion in the garage. we don't know the official cause just yet. take a look at more video that news chopper 2 shot shortly after this fire broke out. a homeowner association's president, someone with the association, came by and spoke to us this morning. he's on his way to work. he told me that the gas line is broken and that the fire department was telling him to warn neighbors, anyone who was coming through the neighborhood or stepping outside of their home to get back inside. right now very smoky out here. let me explain a little about these fires. i want to take you to the one that broke out first this morning. that happened on rock dale. that was a two alarm fire broke out around 5:33. about 50 firefighters were out
6:33 am
there this morning. i understand from the battalion chief that everyone in that home got out. it was a husband, wife, son and dog. and their dog is a pit bull who actually woke them up this morning. very lucky family. now i want to bring you back out here live. we are here along win oaks drive. the house on fire is actually behind me. i understand right now that the woman wholives inside got out safely. she had three dogs. unfortunately only one of those dogs survived. we will have more information for you as soon as we get it. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:33. meantime crews say they are making progress in their efforts to clean up a big sewage spill on the peninsula. thousands of gallons of raw sewage spilled in anchor circle in redwood city. ktvu is out there. you have all the latest on the overnight developments. good morning, craig. >> reporter: good morning,
6:34 am
dave. what happened yesterday afternoon could pail in comparison to what's about to happen. that blue truck there 3300- gallons, see that guy what he's doing dragging a pipe to the holes there part of the sewage system, going to put the pipe in there and suck up the sewage and go into the 3300-gallon tank. the guy's going to leave and come back and somebody's going to take his place. that's what they've been doing all day yesterday afternoon and all day today. crews found the ruptured pipe but the new one is not in the ground yet. since it happened this is what's been happening all yesterday afternoon, last night and overnight. dozens of vacuum trucks ranging in capacity to 1,000 gallons to the one here 3300-gallons sucking up the sewage from the system. as people wake up around here it will only get worse because those people will head to the bathroom and shower, shave and et cetera. the amount of sewage to keep up with only get higher. >> you'll notice the large vacuums.
6:35 am
we have them sucking out the wet wells so that there is no more raw sewage coming out. there's still some flowing of course. but they've pumped it out of the wet well. they'll take it downstream and put it back in the system. >> reporter: basically going downstream and going back to the treatment plant. no problem there. look at this though. this is the replacement pipe for the ruptured one. right now it's sitting on grass next to the point where it ruptured. it was estimated yesterday that 5,000 gallons spilled. but the number's constantly increasing. don't have an answer yet as to why that pipe's still sitting there or when they'll put it into the ground. that's an important part of the equation. talking with one of the supervisors out here he says his guys have been out here all night. he's trying to hire private contractors like the one you see with the blue truck to come in here and take over for their guys so they can go home and get some rest. that's not the only problem. as i mentioned people will be waking up around here. so you're going to have a
6:36 am
bigger problem. a lot more sewage out here within minutes. so we're trying to figure out why that pipe hasn't gotten in the ground. hope to have that answer for you on mornings on 2. live in redwood city, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, craig. overnight a woman escaped from her home unharmed. but that's after it exploded. about 30 firefighters rushed to that home on cold harbor avenue around 11:00 last night. neighbors say they heard a loud explosion before the home burst into flames. an elderly woman inside the home did make it out on her own but firefighters were concerned because she's diabetic. firefighters say the fi started in the home's garage but the cause is under investigation. no one ended up being hurt but the home is completely destroyed. time now 6:36. san francisco police dealing with a recent strain of copper wire thefts. copper was stolen from 12 underground electric vaults. police say the thefts usually happen between 2:00 and 6:00

6:38 am
at civic center station there were two people who were apparently on the tracks at the bart's platform or off the bart platform. police arrived on the scene in san francisco. they couldn't find the people but there are 15 minute delays for trains coming through there. san francisco, daily city and peninsula bound trains. this is because of two people what bart is calling police activity on the tracks. they got out there. they tried to find these people. they couldn't. so the train started up again. but they're being very careful and there are delays now on the system because of that. let's go out to the freeways. 880 north and southbound. that traffic is moving along relatively well as you drive through here. and this morning's commute westbound bay bridge now backing up. looks like it's a ten minute delay at least coming into san francisco today's wealther with mark. fog making a come back toward oakland currently in the lower 60s. with the presence of the fog
