[ inaudible ] >> -- this is ktvu mornings on two. >> well, good morning to you, welcome to mornings on 2. i am dave clark. >> good morning, i am claudine wong. it is thursday, august 26th. >> let's get right to our top story, there are two house fires burning in san jose right now, the largest on del monte place, there are concerns about the safety of the neighbors there. jade hernandez is out there. what is happening now, jade? >> reporter: well, about a half- hour ago the battalion chief told me he pulled his firefighters 100 feet away from this home because he was concerned about a ruptured gasoline. i want to take you to the sky, news chopper 2 cab show you this burning home. i understand from the captain i spoke to a few minutes ago he told me they are still concerned about that ruptured gasoline and pg&e are not here just yet so many of the

residents have been told to say inside their homes. the vice-president of the neighborhood association came here and was shoeing people back into their homes. the fire broke out around 5:40 after a possible explosion in the garage. san jose firefighters were already fighting another fire less than two miles away so the battalion chief said their response time to this fire was much slower than they wanted it to be. the woman who lived inside the home did get out safely this morning but only one of her three dogs survived. the woman's neighbor immediately knew something was wrong around 5:30 this morning when flames burst from the home next door. >> i noticed the lights started dimming and just going on and off in a rough fashion and i told them there must be some issue with the power line or something and i noticed this light going on and off and the neighbors came and said -- [ inaudible ] >> -- flames coming out from the door from the house that

was just next to us. >> reporter: i want to give you a few details of this fire. i want to show you the san jose fire department is bringing in extra resources, this was a three alarm with 70 firefighters on scene. i have been told that mutual aid has been called so that other firefighters can staff the firehouses this morning. the battalion chief did tell me there several fires that broke out at the same time. there was no known cause of this fire but i was told when it is hot residents can overwhelm their electrical boxes. again there is no cause on this fire out here in san jose this morning but they are still looking into whether or not it may have been due to an electrical -- electrical problem this morning. we are going to hear more from neighbors out here and the

battalion chief coming up. live in san jose, jade hernandez kt v channel 2 news. >> thank you. the tile is 7:03. firefighters in the south bay are also dealing with another fire. this one broke out about the same time in cupertino. reported at a house on rockdale drive. look at these pictures. fire officials say the family's pit bull actually woke up the residents. a husband, wife and their son, they all got out safely but they were as you can imagine visibly shaken up. look at these pictures, neighbors say they saw flames spreading from a garage to a car in the driveway. the cause of the fire is under investigation. overnight there was an explosion at a cupertino house and the women inside got out unharmed. 30 firefighters rushed to the home on cold harbor avenue about 11:00 last night. now neighbors heard a loud explosion before the house burst into flames. an elderly woman, you see her

there. she was inside the house but she got out on her own. firefighters are still worried about her because she is diabetic. this fire began especially the garage but the cause is still being investigated. no one was hurt but the home woos destroyed. >> crews are still trying to replace a ruptured sewage pipe that caused a spill in redwood city. the problem was reported yesterday in the redwood shores neighborhood. public works officials say it is unclear what caused the pipe to burst but it sent hundreds of gallons of raw sewage into the street and into redwood shores lagoon and effected the garages of six homes. >> we have a restoration company on-site here to work with the residents on how we are going to sanitize and clean up their property. >> people have been urged to avoid contact with that lagoon. officials say they hope to get a better idea of just how much sewage has gone into that

lagoon later this morning ferlts thousands of people in redwood city will have to wait a couple of more days before their trash is picked up. a dozen workers at the landfill near half moon bay walked off the job yesterday to protest stalled contract negotiations. 250 garbage collectors joined them in a show of support and that has delays residential trash pick up by two days for 36,000 residential customers. >> 7:06. government numbers just came out this morning and new jobless claims dropped for the first time in four weeks. still the number of claims is a lot higher than it would be if the economy was healthy. the labor department says new jobless claims dropped by 31,000 to 473,000. this drop comes after a steep rise over the past three weeks that sent jobless clails to their highest level in nine months. well, bay area hires will

hold a job fair today at san jose's double fee hotel on gateway place, this starts at 11:00 this morning and goes until 2:00 this afternoon. dozens of companies will be represented from public storage to lexus of stevens creek. to get more information go to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. >> time now is 7:06. today fire crews expect to fully conthane that big wildfire near mount diab 0, they started tuesday after on the eastern slope of the mountaineer clayton and is now 90% contained. they burned three 75 acres. no homes or other buildings have been damaged. three firefighters however, did suffer minor injuries, investigators say a downed power line may have started that fire. bart riders can be especially relieved this weak heat wave is now over. the bay area's record breaking hot spell has been causing problems on bart for the past two days. yesterday computer problems tied to the heat caused more

delays on several lines and at least 30 cars had no air- conditioning. bart said it is confident commuters can expect a smooth ride this morning. >> 7:07. sal you still having big problems in san jose. right? >> actually, finally, dave and claudine, i want to tell you that things are a little bit better. the smoke is down and not effecting drivers anymore so you can just go ahead and drive although we will show you san jose traffic right now. this is 101. looks pretty good. the last two days we haven't had a great commute here in the valley. let's take a look at highway 280 into the west valley, so these commutes are encouraging at least for now looking pretty good. bay bridge toll plaza crowd, that even has improved. it was backed up farther. now it is backed up to the middle of that parking lot and the meeterring lights are on. today's weather here is mark tamayo. >> toward alameda lower 60s and

line in the area and it is visible from -- the smoke was vicible from the nearby highway but now they have knocked it down. jade her he is on the scene but you can see they are still dousing it with fire and the home does appear to be a total loss. we will let you know more coming up. 7:13. in other news there is a spike in violence in iraq just as the u.s. is wrapping up the drawdown of combat troops in iraq. our reporter sandra endo is in washington with all the details on this. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. it was considered a major milestone in the war in iraq, of course, the drawdown of all u.s. combat forces in the country since the war began seven years ago, but now there are some consequences. piles of rubble and blown out vehicles. signs of the attack that swept through 13 cities in iraq wednesday, killing at least 48

people and injuring nearly 300 others. large towns in the northwest and southern areas of the nation were hit hard. the violence has increased since u.s. combat troops recently pulled out of the country. >> these are terrible tragic incidents, and we have seen obviously a spike in violence. there are factions in iraq seeking to exploit what they view as a transition period to undermine the progress that has been made on the ground. >> reporter: investigators are looking into whether these attacks were coordinated but they seem to mimic another series of strikes in may which looked like trademark al qaeda. this week's homecoming sell brags as the number of u.s. troops in iraq reached its lowest level, below 50,000, since the start of the war seven years ago. next week operation new dawn takes effect, where the u.s. will have an advise and assist roll.

minister. the reverend jane spare is accused of violating church rules by conducting wedding ceremonies for 16 same sex couples in 2008 when gay marriage was briefly legal here in california. some of those couples actually testified at her trial. a verdict could come some time today or tomorrow. meantime members of the clergy who refuse to conduct same sex marriage ceremonies would be protected under a new pill sent to governor schwarzenegger. this bill was approved by the state senate. it uld be needed if a federal appeals court upholds a judge's ruling striking down proposition 8. the bill says religious institutions cannot be stripped of their tax-exempt status for refusing to perform same sex marriages.

in to help resolve a dispute between the president of the university of california and his landlord. the mansion once occupied by the president has been the site of at least one large protest. they moved out of the home because of a dispute of their landlord over the cost of repairs, both sides say they are owed money by the other for repairs. a private endowment pays for the house in. he now lives in lafayette. >> a san francisco couple is facing a court hearing today, accused of defrauding the city school district as well as private insurers. jonathan dickstein and his wife bark lay linear accused of using their autistic's son's special needs to make money. prosecutors say they created a fake education company to collect almost $400,000 from san francisco's school district as well as insurers. well, health insurance rate hikes have been approved for anthem blue cross and for blue

there are concerns for the safety of people who live near one of two fires burning in san jose. 1 home is on rockdale drive, the other on del monte place, that fire did cause a gas line to rupture. jade hernandez joins us now with new information on the efforts to fix that line. hi jade. >> reporter: claudine we have an update for you since 7:00. we understand pg&e crews arrived 10 after 7:00. you can see right here these guys right here are going to the be ones trying to figure out how to fix that line. they are running into problems because it runs underneath the burning house. they are looking for a line to dig up and cut. they are doing this for two reasons. you can see fire trucks and firefighters are way too close

to the house and, of course resident's safety. i do understand that the nearby residents have been told to evacuate this area. one of the things that we could not show you at sowf is all that veg taigs in front of the house. see that truck right there? that is right in front of where the home which is burning this morning. lots of vegetation, hard to get to the home and they are still pouring a lot of water on it. this was a three alarm fire with 70 firefighters out here. i just wanted to give you an update this morning. there has been an evacuation and pg&e is looking to find a way to cut that main line to the house. right now it is still a ruptured gas line. a lot of things to consider. of course, we will continue to update you and we will have more at the top of the hour. >> all right. thanks, jade. for the latest. we will continue to check back with you. time now is 7:31. crews are hard at work at this hour trying to also clean up a sewage spill. thousands of gallons of raw sewage spilled into redwood

shores neighborhood of redwood city. kraig debro is live on that scene with an update on that cleanup effort. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. still a lot of activity around here and there is a good reason for it. behind me and there is a truck that is going to pass in front of you that is a city truck that is about a 1000 gallon truck and behind that you see two other trucks that hold 3300 gallons of liquid or what have you and they are sucking this sewage out and putting into those trucks and they are taking it downstream and is being put back into the system. i just spoke to the director and she tells me the crews whose job it is is to put the pipe back into the ground, the repair pipe they are here so this all could be done in the time it takes for those crews to do the work but what they have done, the most important thing according to the city is there is no more sewage in the lagoon but it is still in there as a result of yesterday's rupture. a spokesperson says it takes hours to find or took them hours to find where the problem is and then make sure where the crews dug and they rptd going to be rupturing another line like a gas line, so all night long they sucked especially the excess sue annual and put it back into the system. >> so it is sort of like you had said earlier like a

conveyer belt. so we pump it into the trucks and they empty it down the stream. so it is a moving bypass of the problem. >> reporter: so she calls this a flow. it is no longer a spill. it is a flow pause instead of it going directly into the pipes, what is happening is it is going into the pipes in these trs so in their mind it is like okay it hits the ground but still it is not getting into the voirn. now they are supposed to have a lot more of these trucks here down the way, which is just down the street from here but so far they just have two but all night long it has been a constant flow as i said, just a second ago they do have the crews here, the crews whose job it is to nix the pipe because they have got the pipe here they just don't have the crews to do it. those crews are now, here so this problem could be fixed fairly soon, we will keep you updated on that. >> 7:33. well, trash and trash cans are

piling up at thousands of holes around san mateo county. all because sanitation workers walked off the job. about a dozen workers at the landfill near half moon bay are staging a two day strike to protest stalled contract talks. they started picketing yesterday. they were joined by 250 garbage collectors in a show of support. >> basically they are trying to take all our pensions away and cap our insurance, make us pay for it. >> well, these workers say they have been without a contract since late last year. allied waste says it is surprised and disappointed by this workout. 11 communities are effected, san carlos, belmont, foster city, pafl moon bay, burlingame, redwood city, san mateo, menlo parks, east pal 0 at objection atthere ton and hillsborough. allied waste says collection schedule for today will be delayed at least until saturday. if you have friday pick ups you will have to wait until sunday.

wednesday's missed pick ups have been re-scheduled for tomorrow. >> 7:34. this morning police are searching for the gunman responsible for killing a teenager overnight. this is the 5th homicide in oakland just this week. officers are warning of a spike in crime. tara moriarty is live in oakland right now with that story. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, claudine. some say that this is part of a disturbing trend in crime, others say they are not so sure. what happened, police say, is that last night a young teenage boy was walking here along 61th and bancroft avenue when he was shot and killed in an apparent robbery last night. now the gunman was after the victim's wallet. a witness from the scene told ktvu it appeared the boy was no more than 13 years old. the gunman then right off right after the killing around 9:30. this comes over the heels of a

rofort that says it is related to the layoff of police officers. but the police department says overall crime has actually dipped 20%. while some residents question the discrepancy, some city leaders aren't sure. >> i think both could be true and we have to look at those numbers carefully. >> the span we are talking about, 30 days is not enough to look at a pattern and say that is the reason why. >> the oakland police department says according to its crime analysts violent crime has dropped. now city council woman plans to sit down with the chief this week to discuss those stats furtherer. we just spoke with a neighbor here who says he heard the gun shots last night. he says he is surprised by the shooting last night. first of all the victim was so young. second of all he says most of the crime scenes happen 10 blocks from here so we will be talking to him later especially our show.

tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 7:36. police do expect to make more arrests in the shooting and armed robbery at a pacifica gas station. two teenagers are already in custody for the violent actack on an attendant last friday. investigators say several young gunmen opened fire on the 30- year-old clerk. the shooting victim has now been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. >> all right. time now 7:36. let's go to sal. you have been extra busy and there is some scary stuff going on in san jose. >> that's right. we are checking the south bay, dave and claudine, we are also checking the bay bridge. that has been crowded. we are going to go there first looking at 280 -- 80, pardon me, coming up at the bay bridge toll plaza, backed up for about a 12 to 15 minute delay. you start counting at the very end of the line before you actually make it on to the bridge. then another five to ten minutes on the span itself. moving along to the commute here on the nimitz freeway

southbound 880 at 10 isson there is a crash there, northbound an accident in union city on the shoulder near al vair rad 0 kneels so watch for slow traffic there and across the peninsula the traffic is okay on 101. let's take a look at 280. dave mentioned the south bay. 280 is now getting slow getting into the west valley although i doubt this has anything to do with the fires, just a lot of people slowing down on the way up to highway 17 and cupertino here is mark. >> sal, good morning to you. a live look outside in oakland mostly cloudy skies a good sign we will be cooling off today so the roller coaster ride of verying temperatures will continue. monday, tuesday, wednesday, we are going up, up, up, today a big drop off in those readings, in fact no more triple digits to report this afternoon, in fact warmest locations only in the -- right around 90 degrees so patchy fog this morning, inland neighborhoods coming down 15 to 20 degrees from yesterday's highs and the

ally, according to the credit reporting agency credit card debt is at an eight year low with the average at less than $5000. people in alaska continue to carry the highest balance while folks in iowa have the lowest. >> 7:45, california's whooping cough epidemic shows no sign of slowing down. health officials say they recorded 200 new cases this week alone. so far this year there have been 3300 confirmed and suspected whooping cough cases all over california. eight babies have died. health officials are telling parents, really urging them, vaccinate your children and yourselves to prevent the spread of that disease. an industry effort is mount in against a statewide plastic bag ban ahead of a very crucial vote next week. now the bill would make california the first state to ban plastic bags at grocery stores, drugstores and some convenience stores. however, virginia based interest group, including

top story. residents in one san jose neighborhood are under vac wax orders because of a gas line break caused by an early morning fire. jade hernandez just spoke with the homeowner of that burned out home. jade, what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: so many things to update you but first off i am going to show you pg&e crews right here. there are six employees with the white hat. they got a backhoe here they are trying to cut the power, the gas line off to the home here. what we understand is the gas is still flowing but what they are doing is crimping the line, fixing it and then will reattach it. i understand 12 houses will be effected. let me get to the homeowner, this homeowner is a women. her name is shirley. she actually heard the boom this morning. she was lucky enough not to be inside the home when her house caught fire. we do understand, though, she

was walking her dog. she heard a boom. she put her dog back inside because she didn't know where that explosion came from and she tried to get back in the house, she had walked outside, tried to get back in the house, ran to a neighbor's house and called for help and immediately she tried to run back into the home to grab her two dogs it was way too hot. firefighters told her she was lucky and smart to come back outside and wait for firefighters. now response time to this fire. this was a three alarm fire, about 70 firefighters here, we understand response tile is eight minutes and it took ten minutes for firefighters to arrive but there is a reason. there were several fires going on at the time this fire broke out. we want to hear from ba tail opchief juan diaz right now. >> we were depleted because we didn't have any companies to this part of the city so it took us a while toe get here. our first engine was engine three from the center of the city. downtown san jose. >> reporter: you can see this

house, there is still smoke coming from the home this morning. a lot of vegetation in front of the home. that was one of the obstacles that firefighters faced when they arrived this morning. the second a ruptured gas line. pg&e crews are at this hour still working to cut the gas off to that line. they-- they had some problems because the fire trucks are in front of the home and also one of those lines that goes into that house there was no way for get to it, so they actually had to dig at a main line at the -- at the front of this little cul- de-sac. this is del monte place here in san jose. i understand this morning that firefighters will be out here. they are going to wait until that ruptured gas line can be fibs. again 12 houses effected right there. homeowner got out safe. she did lose two of her three dogs this morning but she said she is very lucky and fortunate to be alive. and, of course we will continue to update you because in about a half-hour you are going to hear from some neighbors who heard that explosion and didn't know what was going on.

reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> okay. thanks for that update. we will look forward to the next report. thanks, jade. 8:02. overnight there was an explosion at a cupertino home and the woman inside escaped unharm. 30 firefighters rushed to the home on cold harbor avenue around 11:00 last night. neighbors there say they heard a loud explosion before the home burst into flames. an elderly woman inside the home did make it out on her own. firefighters were concerned because she is diabetic, the fire started in the garage but the cause is still under investigation. no one was hurt but that hole was destroyed. >> repairs are hard at work trying to clean up thousands of gala ons of raw sewage that spilled in redwood city. kraig debro has an update. >> reporter: thank you, dave. according to the acting director of public in works here in redwood city the end is near. behind me is sort of ground zero. first of all we have been show

in these tanker trucks all morning long, sucking sue annual out and taking it away. you see that pipe. that is what is going to be used later this morning. we understand crewsary here and they will do that. what you can't see is a hole in thy ground where a ruptured pipe was found. it is loud out here, it is constant and it smells. this all began early this morning when they started bringing the trucks in but the worst apparently is over for many people here. the raw sue am is no longer flowing into the lagoon but from the video you can see it is still in the lagoon. the city is having the water tested to make sure it is safe and if not they will treat it. all night long trucks holding up to 3300 gallons of liquid essentially served as suary pipe. they took it and delivered it back downstream. the city said that was their

only option. >> this is a force that is under pressure and constantly pumping, so it is not the same as a water main break and the sue annual is constantly flowing. you can't shut off sue annual, if you shut off sewage it moves mostly by gravity. if you shut off the flow of sewage it backs up somewhere. >> reporter: so the crews basically they took it downstream and what she meant by that is if there is a water main breab you can shut off the water and then it just backs up in the reservoir or the tank on the top of the hill. but if you do it in this case it is sue am, so what is the ours of sewage? well et is the toilet in your home or actually several pumping stations around this part of the city so you can't have it backing up into people's homes and backing up into the little pumping stations around the city. so there are several homes, a lot of people show up and are

dumb founded, what is going on around here. well it serves the whole area around here so it is possible you could be up to a smile away -- or a mile and a half away and not hear this and not know what is going on and like i said they cannot tell people what to do so, and that is what has happened people have not seen any interruption in their service at home and they believe this pipe will be in the ground by the end of the day. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the numbers just out this morning happened the new jobless claims dropped for the first time in four weeks but it is much higher than in a healthy economy. that drop comes after a steep rise during the past two weeks, which sent jobless claims to their highest levels in nine months. bay area hires is holding a

we will try to get to the bottom of it. gan i just got an e-mail. we will toss it to mark. i will try and find out more for you. >> okay. sal. good morning to you. you are talking about the fog here in san francisco. look at this. the clouds making a big come back. this will be the source of a big time cool down for today. san francisco right now only upper 50s. remember just a couple of days ago temperatures in the 90s. today only make it up into the 60s for afternoon highs. the big weather head alone you probably noticed it. we are cooling off quite a bit. inland neighborhoods coming down 15 for 20 degrees from yesterday's highs and the cooling trend kicks in for this weekend. the temperature comparisons yesterday in santa rosa 103. today 79. livermore down from 105 to 90. san jose down to the lower 80s, san francisco started that cool down yesterday. but today only mid-60s right around 65 degrees. here is a look at some of the current numbers and quite a bit of some fog like we just showed

you right around san francisco and mostly cloudy for santa rosa, napa, oakland, mountain view and san jose, concord 61. yesterday at this time concord was 13 degrees warmer, so that is a good sign today will be cooler. here we go with this area of high pressure, this has been responsible for that big warm up over the past few days. this weekend it moves out of town you can see what happens with an area of low pressure moving in from the north. temperatures cooling off and by saturday warmest locations mid to upper 70s so a significant droopoff in those numbers right on into the weekend. temperatures this morning 50s and 60s, in the afternoon hours the range from 60s, 70s, 80s, warmest locations barely making it to the 90 degree mark. if you are traveling the possibility of some thunderstorms on lake tahoe, a slight chance on saturday but a better chance into sunday. down into southern california, more sunshine but partly cloudy skies for los angeles and the forecast high of 60. back here in the bay area we are tracking the clouds this

megawatts was recorded in july, 2006. now a typical summer weekday usage is about 40,000 megawatts. despite that high demand for electricity we have not, we have not seen rolling power blackouts. the ones that california experienced ten years ago. pg&e says that is because residents and businesses are do in better about conserving energy and the utility companies have added more capacity to the power grid. >> investing heavily in not only purchasing renewable energy but also seeking to build more renewable generation sources. >> pg&e says it has increased its contracting for solar power, wind energy and other renewable energy sources. >> some of those potentially tainted gs at the center of a recall could make their way back into your house and into your food. the fda says some of the recalled eggs have been shped to so-called braking

facilities, where they are cooked and pasturized and added to a variety ofed for products, that is supposed to kill any salmonella. safety experts say they still plan to test them and will not ship them out until they test negative. the santa clara county sheriff's office tracked down and arrested two 22-year-old man for poping a laser beam at a sheriff's helicopter tuesday night. this is a growing problem and a dangerous one, especially for major u.s. airports. oakland international and san jose airports are on the list of the top 5 airports for laser strikes, earlier this month a pilot tried to land a night flight and was blinded by a laser beam. the co-pilot had to take over control of that plane. >> your time is now 8:17. bart has spent almost $6 million dealing with the aftermath of the deadly shooting of oscar grant. this is the first time bart has tried to put a price tag on its

cost from the shooting that occurred on january 1st, 2009 by former bart police officer johannes mehserle. that controversial shooting led to lawsuits demonstrations and an overhaul of police training. last month a jury convicted him of involuntary manslaughter. bart's board of directors will meet in about 45 minutes. they will be talking about a money matter. they will talk about the plan to give riders a break th bart's surplus money. the latest plan calls for pushing back a scheduled fair hike scheduled to take effect in january 2012 and will consider a request to earmark money for more businesses owned by minorities and women. >> the goal will be to assist them in getting larger contracts which i feel that they deserve and they deserve. >> the bart recently found out

it had an unexpected multimillion dollar budget surplus. some of the board members have spent the past several weeks debate i what to do with that money. again today's board meeting begins at 9 time a.m. >> in napa this morning closing griewlts begin in the church trial of a retired presbyterian minister. she is accused of violating church rules by conducting weddings for 16 same sex couples back in 2008 when gay marriage was briefly legal in california. some of those couples testified at her trial. a verdict is expected sometime today or tomorrow. members of the clergy who refused to conduct same sex marriage ceremonies would be protected under a bill sent to governor schwarzenegger. the bill was approved by the state senate and could be needed if federal appeals courts up holds a judge's ruling striking down proposition 8. the bill says religious institutions cannot be vipped of their tax-exempt status for refusing to perform same sex marriages. >> 8:19. democrat candidate for governor jerry brown is responding to attacks made by his republican

a mediator may by called in to help solve a dispute between the president of the university of california and his landlord. the oakland hills mance once occupied i the u.s. president has been the site of at least one large protest over the past year. they auto moved out because of a dispute over the cost of repairs. both sides say they are owed money by the other for repairs. a private endowment pays for the breeze's housing and he now lives in lafayette. san francisco police are dealing with a recent string of copper wire thefts. in the past three weeks copper was stolen from 12 underground electric bulbs, police say they take place between 2:00 and 6:00 in the morning and have caused outages and damages to

homes and businesses, anyone who sees anything suspicious should call police or pg&e. the mount soip campus was also the victim of copper theft. pg&e says someone stole a corp ring from the any a transformer that forced the hospital to use its back up generators. the outage did not interfere with the hospital operations. there is no word yet on if any arrests have been made. >> 8:24. we are now finding out that palo alto based tessla motors had to pay a $2 75,000 fine to the environmental protection agency. tessla paid the penalty to the epa back in january because it didn't apply for a required documents on the epa in a timely manner. tessla needed that document for its all electric roadster sports cars. in a settlement tessla agreed to pay $275,000 to compensate for the oversight. >> it is 8:25 and we want to go right out to sal castaneda who told us there is a problem in

san francisco. hello there. >> hello there. there is a problem in san francisco. that would be a crash southbound 101 and third street involving a motorcycle down so taking the extension is knott going to help you unless you stay on it. the accident is again after the 280 interchange at third street. motorcycle down at first this guy was unconscious but then they were able to revive him and work n on him now but southbound 101 is a good area to avoid. use that as and alternate route,280 to 380 instead. northbound 101 should not be everybodied although there may be rubberneckers to that crash. bay bridge has recovered, san mateo, golden gate and richmond traffic doing will. let's go to mark. >> a much different weather story, clouds are back with us and cooling off big time. we can show you some of the overcast with the clouds

>> reporter: good morning. the gas line has been shut off. that is good news this morning. sometimes life is all about being at the right place at the right time. we spoke to the homeowner. she told us she was out walking her dog when she heard an sploption. she didn't know what was going on so she took her dog back inside and when she went inside she realized something was terribly wrong. >> right across the street. i heard the big boom. boom. i guess i was lucky i wasn't there. >> reporter: this home burned quickly. it is located at 910 del monte place here in san jose. flames erupted av the explosion around 5:40. less than ten minutes before and two miles away firefighters were already working a two alarm fire. una moment we are going to show you exclusive video of what is left of this home. first the homeowner tells us she has lived here since the late 60s. she did live alone and had three dogs with her, only two

survived. only two survived -- actually she had three dogs and two died in this fire. firefighters ran into obstacles, they were called to fix a ruptured gas line and as i mentioned it has been shut off this morning. nearby residents were evacuated, homes on both sides did not have gas flowing into them so there was no worry there would be an explosion but the good news is the gas has been shut off. and we spoke to a neighbor who saw something weird. heard some weird noises and then knew that there was something off. >> there was an explosion in our garage. she came to our house, knocked on the door, rang the doorbell so we all woke up. it was about 5:00 in the morning and told us our garage had exploded. >> reporter: now, this morning we do have some exclusive video to show you, that is what is left of this home. earlier this year in july the san jose fire department lost 4 engines and a truck in the budget cut. what we understand this morning

is that a regular response time is about eight minutes but due to cuts and due to the fact that there was another fireworking in the city and within moments of each other, that there was a 10 minute response time. in fact the homeowner told me she felt like she was waiting forever for firefighters to get here. 70 firefighters were called out to this scene. a three alarm fire. san jose fire department had to call in mutual aid just so they could staff their other firehouses and again in july they lost four especially gins and one truck in the budget cuts. this morning we do have pg&e crews working to repair the line. we were told 12 homes right here in del monte place will be effected because that gas line does go into those other homes. they will be effected for about a day. so the homeowner is safe this more. she did lose two dogs but she is a very very lucky woman this morning. reporting live, jade hernandez,

ktvu channel 2 news. >> okay, jade, thank you. time is now 8:33. well firefighters in the south bay have also been fighting another fire. this 1 broke out at the same time in cupertino. it happened at a home on rockdale drive. the husband, the wife and their son were inside at the time. all were sound asleep, but they were awakened by a -- the sound of their pit bull. >> the dog started barking. woke me up. ran down the hall opened the garage. 3 grail was on fire, got everybody out of the house. by the time we made it on the front lawn it was gone. >> we are told the family lost everything. as you can imagine they were visibly upset and shaken. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. >> teenager is dead following an overnight shooting in oakland and police and union leaders warn that attack is part of a disturbing trend. tara moriarty is live now in oakland with reaction.

good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. police say that a teenaged boy was gunned down here last night near the corner of 61th and bancroft avenue in an apparent robbery. now a witness we spoke to last night said it appeared the victim was no more than 13. the suspect stole his walt and ran off leaving him dead around 9:30 last night. we spoke to neighbors just moments ago who said senseless killings like these have to stop. >> i keep -- [speaking foreign language] >> -- a surprise when i heard the seven gunshots and all the people ran out to see what happened. >> what does a 13-year-old have? you know, mean what cap a 13- year-old do to somebody else? that is all i wanted to know. >> reporter: union leaders for the police department say this latest homicide comes as no surprise to them. 80 officers were laid off recently and officials with their union say that this is a

direct correlation, a 9% spike in violent crime and the number of officers out on the street but statistics from the police department paint a little bit picture, they say that overall crime is down 20%, so this discrepancy has prompted city leaders, city council woman jane bruner is meeting with chafe anthony bats this week to find out if there is indeed a link. >> 8:36. police expect to make more arrests for the shooting and armed robbery at a pacific gas station. two teenagers are already in custody for the violent attack at a gas station on an attendant. this happened at the shell station on hickey road last friday. investigators say several young gunmen opened fire on the 30- year-old clerk. the shooting vk has since been released from the hospital and is now at home recovering. >> time now 8:36. well, the trash and trash cans are just pieing up at thousands of holmes around san mateo

county, all because sanitation workers walked off the job. about a dozen workers at the landfill near half moon bay are staging a two day strike to protest stalled contract talks. they started picketing yesterday. they were joined by 250 garbage collectors in a show of support. >> basically they are trying to take all our pences away and cap our insurance, make us pay for it. >> these workers say they have been without a contract since late last year. reallied waste says it is surprised and disappointed by the walkout. 11 communities in san mateo are effected by this, they are san carlos, belmont, foster city, half moon bay, burlingame, redwood city, san mateo, menlo parks, east pal 0 at objection atthere ton and hillsborough, alley waste says collection scheduled for today will be delayed until saturday. now, if you have friday pick ups you will have to wait until sunday. and wednesday's missed pickups

have been re-scheduled for tomorrow. >> time now is 8:37. let's go back out to sal castaneda who is going to update us on that crash in san francisco. >> i just got word that that crash has been cleared southbound 101 at third. let me put it on the map. it was there pretty much at the bottom of the -- right near san francisco and brisbane city line. near third street. 101 is just a mess even though they have cleared the accident. 280 is your best bet. go around and head down through daily city and san bruno, which is slow but i don't know at this point i would probably still use 280. you can see it is bright red. the censors are bright red right there on 101 in front of san francisco state. both directions slow traffic. all right, let's move along and take a look at live pictures. bay bridge not too bad. it has recovered getting into san francisco. also this morning northbound 880 as you drive up past the coliseum, that traffic is busy interest getting into downtown oakland. now, here is mark. >> hi there, sal. good morning to you.

look at behind me all the overcast making a come back. today you will notice a big change in temperatures so we heat it up, monday, tuesday, wednesday. started to cool off coast side. cooling felt across a good portion of the bay area for today. north of the cooling you can see it showing up nicely on the satellite on live storm tracker 2 as we do come in tighter. actually we lost our image but overcast skies toward the south bay and up around the bay as well. today cooler areas of fog and temperatures coming down 15 for 20 degrees from yesterday's highs for the interior. more cooling expected this weekend with only 60s and 70s in the forecast. here we go with the comparison from yesterday. yesterday talking about tripil digits santa rosa 103. today only 79. so a noticeable change there. livermore only 90. san jose down from at least 100 yesterday to 82. san francisco started to cool off on wednesday. that trend will continue for today. forecasting mid-60s this afternoon. here we go with current numbers san francisco upper 50s.

e is a 8:45. let's bring you up to date on some of tonight stories we are following for you right now. fire officials still at the scene of this. this is a live picture folks. a major overnight house fire that caused a gas line to break. we are just finding out it is going to take at least a day for that line to be repaired. by the way a woman who lives in this house escaped any injury but two of her three dogs did for the survive. repair crews in redwood city say they expect to have a new sewer line in place installed by the end of the

day. the old one ruptured yesterday and thousands of gallons of sewage spilled into the streets and the redwood shores lagoon. six homes were also effected. today fire crews expect to fully contain that big wildfire near mt. diablo. 325 acre curry fire broke out tuesday afternoon near clayton. luckily no one was hurt. no homes were lost. we are getting word just in, a federal judge in washington has said baseball -- major league baseball star roger clemens arraignment for 2:00 p.m. on monday. roger clemens, you see him here in the picture. he will face the court for the first time on charges of perjury and lying to congress in connection with his testimony where he said he never used steroids. the seven time cy young award winner was indicted last week by a federal grand jury.

adjustable rate mortgages. i talked to one woman. >> i thought that was the best way to go. >> analysts say the crisis is far from over and in fact there are some signs it could still get worse. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, alison. the numbers have just given released this morning and the new jobless claims did drop for the first time in four weeks but the number of claims is still much higher than it would be expected to be in a healthy economy. the labor department says new jobless claims dropped by 31,000, that it pes the number at ruffle 473,000. that drop comes after a steep rise during the past three weeks which sent jobless claims to their highest level in nine months. now when it comes to finding a job one bay area city is number 2 in the country. san jose is second only to

washington, d.c. as one of the best cities in the country to find work. they earned the ranking because of high-tech companies. >> 8:48. the wall street journal is saying bay area city officials are paid more than their counterparts in other parts of the state. san francisco mayor gavin newsom will earn $240,000 this year to run his city. it has a population of 815,000. oakland mayor rondel ums earns $183 thousand a year go a city with a populace of fewer 09 thousand. in comparison, the mayor of san diego, with a populace of 1.3 million, is paid $94 thousand a year. a san francisco couple is facing a court hearing today, accused of defrauding the city's school district as well as private insurers. jonathan dickstein and his wife bar clay lynne, are

accused of using their son's autistic needs in order to collect money. they collected almost $400,000 from the san francisco school district as well as insurancers. >> federal investigators may be brought in following a disturbing series of vandalism incidents at a mosque near fries fresno, last sunday someone threw a brick threw the window and someone left a writic referring to the mosque near ground zero. >> it is unacceptable. and i think everybody should be outraged. >> the center has added more cameras and has increased security patrols. >> 8:50. more violence today in iraq and have targeted iraqi security forces. six members of a militia alryed with the government were killed

welcome back. we have just learned new information about a shooting in east oakland. police are now confirming the victim was a 13-year-old named vaf on clark, a track star at the middle school and would have turned 14 in just six days, police say a gunman approached the boy and his friend last night while they were walking on bancroft avenue

and began shooting. the motive is still unclear and so far no arrests have been made. there is a $15,000 reward now being offered for any information. we also have an update on five s victims injured in san francisco after an unlicensed driver plowed into them. 1 is still in critical, four are serious and a 5th upgraded to fair. the driver says she lost control of her suv on tuesday when she says it lost power on san bruno avenue. police did ticket her for not having a license or insurance. >> time now 8:55. marin general hospital will file a $120 million lawsuit this morning. hospital officials claim souther siphoned off $30 million a year for four years from reserve funds as it was getting ready to end its management of the hospital. before that sutter reportedly took just $three million a year. the lawsuit reportedly comes as

not a surprise. local political officials have been pressuring sutter to give back the money. a spokesperson for sutter called the lawsuit regrettable. a san francisco based corporation is being sued for the use of the mafia wars name on social networking sites. a san mateo company called digital chocolate is suing them for the trademark infringement claiming it coin the name first for an unpopular cell phone game. they are quoted as saying they will defend the use of that name investigate door russly. >> watsonville and navato are the latest citys to approve moratoriums on smart meters but it is not clear if that will stop them from being installed. pg&e started rotting them out in santa cruz county last month but critics say they are unsafe and unreliable. this morning a group of residents are staging a protest
