monday. there is a candlelight vigil for him tonight. and a body has been found. they are waiting for dna. a tip from a person under arrest led to his body. short staffed and in high school demand, firefighters in the south bay found themselves stretched thin today responding to three fires in less than three hours. the city's financial budget cut back on firefighters. >> reporter: san jose firefighters have returned here to delmonte place. firefighters are now checking for any signs of smoldering. the fire was one of three in less than two hour, and

firefighters say they couldn't respond as quickly as they should have because of cuts. firefighters were battling this fire, the second fire of the early morning. then about 20 minutes later, a third fire. the owner of the home had just returned after walking one of her dogs. >> i heard a big boom. i guess i was lucky i wasn't there. >> reporter: she says she couldn't save three of her dogs. >> the smoke was gunning at me. and fire fighters said i was right to come back out. they said they died right away. >> reporter: her home is a total loss and said it took a while for firefighters to arrive. >> i guess it was a good 10 minutes. >> reporter: firefighters say it was ten minutes. firefighters were still at the scenes of the other two fires

and makes matters were they are shorthanded. earlier this month, the department laid off 40 firefighters. >> the reduction of firefighters is bearing the fruit that these politicians have propagated. >> reporter: today firefighters began voting on whether to accept the city's proposal of cutting wages by 9%. if the proposal goes through, 40 firefighters will come back. >> the city will be well protected. >> reporter: late this afternoon the mayor's office told us a preliminary report indicate that is the delayed response time was not due to the lay offs but just because there was too many fires at the same area at the same time.

rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. and firefighters are crediting the homeowners pit bull for saving the family. firefighters county deputies say they have arrested two men who pointed a laser at a sheriff helicopter. both from milpedas are charged with shining a laser at the helicopters. oakland and san jose are the main airport in the country when it comes to people on the ground pointing lasers at aircraft. pilots say lasers can blind them when they are flying at night and create a significant danger. angered passengers and rattled nerves when a plane

makes an emergency landing. the plane blew a fire while landing. >> reporter: right now we're standing at the runway, you can see the jet blue plane still standing idle. two of its back wheels are now part of an investigation into what happened to spark an emergency evacuation. this afternoon passengers hugged and they told us how lucky they felt. >> thank god we are okay. >> reporter: this afternoon this plane incoming was landing when all of a sudden -- >> we started jiggling. >> reporter: passengers told ktvu felt a jolt. >> it felt like if you were slamming on your breaks.

>> reporter: an emergency evacuation was initiated. emergency chutes deployed. >> they finally told us there was a fire on the plane. >> the flight attenat that attendant was scaring us. >> reporter: four people ended up being transported to the hospital with minor injuries. >> i think the chaos was getting off that flight because people got hurt. you just have no control when you are on that flight. people are stuck at the bottom, bumping into each other. one lady hurt her leg really bad. >> reporter: and back here live again, this is up close look at the tires that are blown out are now part of this investigation. airport officials saying they are investigating everything from the touchdown. firefighters trying to figure out why there was a fire.

here. that person probably got 300%. but caused many cancelled surgeries. a sign of the times. members of a group called avarigonal united, they say builders are not using local labor. the protesters say they are members of the building trade unions but can't get work on the project. >> the problem is, they never hire anybody from the community. everybody that works in there is from elsewhere. >> reporter: the project where they are protesting is uscf's mission bay hospital. ucsf says it is committed to hiring local workers and has had a program in place since 1993 that looks to do that in all its projects.

unemployment claims dropped for the first time in weeks. if drop comes after a steep drop over the past three weeks. a job hunting website lists san jose as the second city in the country on which to find a job with an average of 1.2 applicants for every job. it is second only to washington, d.c. the work site juju.com says it earned the company because of companies like google and facebook. investors gave gains back by the close. the dow jones closed below 10,000 for the first time since early july. for more financial news go to

ktvu.com. and an alabama speaker says he was joking when he said nancy pelosi could get sick and die. he was asked if he would support pelosi for speaker again. he ended by saying he could lose congressional support or she could get sick and die. people are wondering when the trash trucks will be back on their street. we have an update on the strike, next. bay area lagoon is off limits right now because of a sewage spill. and over 20 degrees cooler and many locations today, we're going to take a look at the weekend and it includes much of what you see there.

should get their trash picked up soon. about a thousand workers of the landfill are protesting stalled contract negotiations. they started picketing yesterday and were joined by 250 garbage collectors in a show of support. trash collection will resume tomorrow at homes that were supposed to have a wednesday pick up and will continue on a two day delay through the weekend. well, a messy smelly sewage spill in the peninsula. this is an aerial view of the spill. we're talking about the redwood shores lagoon. kraig debro has more on the spill. >> reporter: it's been more than a day since a pipe ruptured and sent 10,000 pounds of raw sewage into the redwood

shores lagoon. >> it's probably about 8 feet of pipe that ruptured and collapsed. >> reporter: it may not be still flowing into the lagoon but it is still clearly in the lagoon. residents here have been warned not to have contact with the water, as messy and smelly this problem is, many people here didn't know there was a problem. >> i was working until late. i didn't turn on the tv last night. >> it's pretty bad. pretty bad, smells like sewage. >> reporter: it doesn't look too good either. this is the source of all of the problem. some where under the surface of the sewage is a broken 14-inch pipe, since yesterday at 3:00 p.m. when the pipe rupture, crews have been bailing out a ship constantly taking on water. >> we've pump it out into the trucks and the tankers move it downstream. >> reporter: that process was repeated dozens of times overnight, but the city says it

has already tackled it's main concern. >> as long as we are we moving the sewage from the wet well which is where it flows through first and we keep the well level down, we should not have more overflow into the lagoon or the street or the driveways. >> reporter: according to an adjustor, the cost of cleaning all that up will be the tens of thousands of dollars. it is too late for the owners of six garages next to the ruptured well. one of the owners told me he was moving tomorrow and he packed up all his stuff and it was in the garage when the sewage came rushing under the door. the city had to robocall residents in the neighborhood. the lagoon is in every part. >> i don't see too many people using this lagoon for recreational purposes. but it's still, the odor is pretty bad. >> reporter: the cause is under investigation. but it's a high pressure pipe,

and like some people, pipes too crack under pressure. kraig debro, ktvu. a bulldozer breached a river allowing water to flood a thousand acres of former sod pods. fish and water foul will soon make the new tidal their home. the u.s. maritime investigation is being done in compliance with the terms of a lawsuit settlement. environment groups complained saying the old ships had become a source of pollutants from paint and metals. it hired contractors the scrape and clean up the mess every several days. the plan is to have the ships

on ktvu. people on the beach, out enjoying the sun not for the next couple of days. july and august. remember how cool it had been. it's because of this low pressure center. this is what's going to happen this weekend. so the cool july, the cool august, going to be impacted by we're going to see that same mechanism for cooling this weekend. this is unusually cool system for this time of year. friday through sunday, certainly drizzle along the coast. we're going to stay cool around here. this type of system, what it does, doesn't impact the valley so much. like redding and sacramento. they get mild temperatures. low 90s, mid-90s. for us, it takes the fog and pushes it up into the inland area. it's going to be a lot of marine layer in your neighborhood. tomorrow, and saturday morning. here we are 7:00 a.m. saturday morning. with all the fog. that's your forecast model showing fog. you know that has an impact on

today marks the first

anniversary of the discovery of kidnapping victim jaycee dugard. there are reports that she celebrated the occasion by taking a camping trip in northern california. authorities report that the garridos kept her captive in their backyard for 18 years. moms who need help the most are the ones least able to afford it. >> more than half of the babies living in poverty had a mother who was experiencing some sort of depressive symptoms, mild, moderate or severe. >> researchers behind a new report show that mothers who aren't able to get up and play with baby, they are stunting

a lot of people want to fly to some of these trips. these are some of the premier trips. >> traveling with the san francisco 49ers for example, but now some flight attenat that attendants are up in arms about who gets to be up on the air in certain assignments. they are assignments that take workers to fun destinations. now a flight attendant union is pointing at united at only picking certain flight attendants. >> reporter: what united is doing is against a recent arbitration ruling and just plain unfair. at issue are charter flights booked by the san francisco 49ers and other clients. the flight attendant union is

pointing out the airline when it comes to unfair choosing of who gets to attend the flight. they say they are playing favorites. >> these are some of the premier trip, they go to really nice destinations. you get to hang out with san francisco 49ers or whoever we are doing the flight for. >> reporter: the arbitration banned the airline for hand picking personnel for the 49ers or any other client. the airline has approved new criteria not mentioned in the new contract. >> we don't have an issue with the 49ers, the issue is we've won this grievance and they are not supposed to be helping them with who is going to fly this flight. >> reporter: flight attendants with no complaints,

accommodations with passengers and good attendance. they released this statement. united told us they are not making the decisions on who works the charter, they says that ultimately up to the client in this case the 49ers. the 49ers did not comment on the controversy. at the very least, flight attendant officials say they will seek the arbitrators union from their attorneys. live in the newsroom, sal castaneda. authorities have arrested two men on a raid in a marijuana garden at the edge of yosemite park. on land straddling the park and sierra forest. the two mexican citizens that were arrested were in the u.s.

illegally. one of them was armed with a .44 caliber pistol. there are several reasons why they will not tolerate such activities. >> in addition to the public safety issue for visitors possibly running across these people, these marijuana cultivation sites cause a tremendous amount of damage to the parkland. >> the suspects will be charged in federal court because the grow site was on federal land. federal officials say they pinpointed at least one salmonella case. they have found salmonella in chicken feed in iowa. salmonella fears prompted both companies to recall about a half a billion eggs. the feed may not be the only source of contamination. so far there are almost 1,500

illnesses linked to that salmonella outbreak. this one linked to engine stalling. more than a million carolla sedans and matrix hatch backs are affected sold in the united states from 2005 to 2008. federal authorities launched an investigation in december after getting 366 complaints including three accidents and one ininjury. the investigation came in the heels of another massive recall linked to defective gas pedals and floor mats. people in new orleans are getting ready to mark five years since hurricane katrina. some with triumph, others frustration. on august 29, hurricane katrina lashed the gulf coast leaving devastation in the wake. this video shows the

bart says it has spent $6 million as a result of the oscar grant shooting. this is the first time bart has put a dollar amount on its cost from grant's shooting since january 1st 2009 by former bart police officer mehserle. last month, a jury convicted mehserle of involuntary manslaughter he is scheduled ton sentenced in early november. bart board of directors voted today to put in effect -- the director has also voted to put 3 million into a reserve account. the reserve account is where bart sets aside money for emergencies and other unexpected spending. the commission is set to hear about a plan to expand the

massive ikea store. ikea has filed an application to take over a plant which is not far from where the current store is located. ikea wants to use this new location as a place for customers to pick up large items. some folks who live by those are worried this new spot could create too much noise, too much traffic and also lower their property values. netflix says customers can now instantly downstream movies on wifi or 3g wireless connections. cisco systems today announced plans to buy extend media company. extend media provides technology for management contact management. to develop multi screen development methods. the deal is expected to close

blaming the weather for a resurgence of weather. the mice, squirrel, the rats are damaging people's rats and they can carry disease as well. for some, there is an up side and health and science editor john fowler is live to explain, john -- >> reporter: this field near the foot of mount diablo is a great example. it's crawling with rodents and shock full of squirrels. look at these burros, but homeowners notice much more. >> we have squirrels, but we have rats, big rats. >> what's unusual is a lot of bunny rabbits and gophers, a

lot of landscape type rodents. >> reporter: pendegraph treated this lawn. field mice were all over because it's been a wet, mild year. >> there was a ton of food for these little guy, that made them so that they could breed successfully and raise lots and lots of young. the other predators are in hog heaven. our wildlife hospital has seen double the number of deer mice and of ground squirrels. >> reporter: with damage to your landscaping, you may be tempted to use a pesticide. >>? a lot of cases it causes death to birds of prey. >> reporter: although pendegraph does use a poison. >> it's called dex3 and it

planetary system that could include a planet the size of earth. they detected two small plants the size of saturn. a third small object could be another planet just a bit larger than effort. european astronomers reported that they too had detected the planets. there's a weather system north here, i'm going to show you that as well that's enhancing the fog. will make for a cooler weekend around here. there's the fog as it sits now, pacifica, half-moon bay. look at stinson beach there's a little clearing there. more fog making it's way across the city. out toward the ballpark now, there's be fog in oakland. look at temperatures, much

cooler than they were. here's the drop off temperatures today in concord, 25 degrees cooler, 81 degrees, santa rosa was 30 degrees cooler. san jose 22 degrees cooler. much cooler certainly than two days ago, we had all the records. temperatures the next few days are going to trend down because of this large scale feature that is going to bring clouds to the area and a cooler breezier weather pattern to the bay area weekend. the first thing it does is it takes the fog as i mentioned it pushes it well in. that's your tomorrow morning. when you wake up, you have fog. in napa you get a bit of a break. and trying to get into san jose, well into the delta and works it's way into the coast. as you move the microclimate into friday, we have 60s. here we are now out over mount diablo, upper 80s, low 80s and

90s. morning fog in san m ateo much cooler than it had been. 66degrees at lunchtime. beautiful city san mateo right at the water there. it's right next to the bay. forecast high tomorrow, they are high enough that they don't get the cooling of the marine layer right away. 80 in napa tomorrow, 88 in fairfield. this is your friday, and perhaps it's a get away. i don't know a lot of the kids are back in school but doing one last weekend trip. be prepared for temperatures similar to these. lots of 70s and 60s. this is a cool weather pattern that will stick with us through the weekend. what does it do? it drops the fire danger way down. the air quality gets good and we're back to a pattern that we saw basically the entire month of july and really almost all of august. so, i don't know what do you do?

officials in france are banking on the american economy to boost the number of tourists traveling to paris. 20% fewer americans are visiting paris. paris forecast tourists will improve about 20% this year. for two hours today, anyone who brought a lightbulb to any kipton hotel got an energy saving bulb for free. the give away was to celebrate the news that kipton hotels have been awarded the green seal silver certification. mayor gavin newsom was on hand at the drake hotel to proclaim
