foundation got complaining about that rally. >> this is ktvu channel 2news at six. >> good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> a manhunt over about two hours ago. ktvu learned the man accused of shooting todd young is in custody. san diego police confirm the arrest. they say the 20-year-old was taken into custody this afternoon near the united states mexico border. meantime tonight todd young is young is in critical condition. john joins us live now with new details on this developing story. >> reporter: this is the hospital. right now police officers and family are holding vigil for one of their own. at the same time thalled shooter is now in police custody in southern california. inside the oakland hospital the 39-year-old police officer todd

young has been through three surgeries and used 60 units of blood since yesterday. >> he isn't out of the woods yet and everybody needs to keep him in their thoughts and prayers. >> reporter: he was shot several times in the pelvis and remains in critical but stable condition. as young fought for his life this morning swat officers from multiple agencies flooded into the dakota neighborhood of union city searching for the gunman. >> any time we have a crime involving a hand gun or certainly in this case involving the shooting of a police officer we will come in with our tactical teams. >> reporter: the 20-year-old suspect grew newspaper this neighborhood but he hadn't been there in several months. he fired on young and other officers yesterday afternoon in east oakland as they tried to arrest him on a variety of charges. >> he was wanted on felony evasion and domestic violence and pointing a firearm at the child's mother. he needs to be brought to

justice. >> reporter: to get away he allegedly car jacked a car that police recovered early this morning. late this afternoon we confirmed with san diego police that they arrested him near the mexico border. after ditching the car it's not clear how he got there. >> if we learn that there is a familiar, friend or gang member hiding him or keeping him from the police agencies we will bring charms against those people. >> reporter: now it's a matter of getting him back to the bay area. that will coincide with the task of supporting the officer and his wife and two children. ktvu channel 2news. >> for more on this developing story log onto the website at ktvu.com. >> oakland police also investigating two homicides. the first was very close to the area where the officer was shot. that happened on the 1400 block of 83rd avenue this morning. police shut down the intersection to search for the

suspect who apparently escaped. no details about the victim or the crime. police are also investigating the death of an unidentitied man whose body was found wrapped in a rug. the body was found at 9:30 this morning on the 900 block of 89th avenue. police in fairfield investigating a possible gang related drive by shoot that wounded two teen boys aged 15 and 17. they were shot at 5:30 yesterday at parkway gardens their injuries aren't life threatening. investigators say one shot came from a dark blue, mid1990s model buick. anybody with intersection is asked to call police. >> a man is in the hospital after being pulled from a burning car that sparked a grass fire. the 19-year-old was driving under the influence when he crashed his vehicle into a pole

in brentwood boulevard around 4:13. the accident caused the fire that eventually grew to 20 acres before being contained. the driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. dozens of homes have been evacuated as firefighters battle the 850-acre fire. it's burning 30 miles north of grass valley on the western side of the tahoe national forest. fire officials say strong winds are expected through the night making even more difficult and dangerous for crews trying to contain the flames. the fire started around 4:00 p.m. yesterday. there is no word yet on how it started. >> a baby girl back home with her mother tonight after her father allegedly kidnapped her yesterday from a daycare center. police say the 26-year-old javier martinez took her and then called the mother and threatened to kill himself and the girl. authorities say late last night

officers convinced him to turn himself in. ? search teams found an 84-year- old woman early this morning more than 12 hours after she went missing. police say joyce has alzheimer's and had wander away from her home yesterday morning. she was found in a dry creek bed. she was taken to the hospital for observation and besides being shaken officers said she appeared to be okay. the countdown is on until the first prime time debate between barbara boxer and her challenger. the double digit unemployment is certain to come up. ken pritchett with more election coverage. >> reporter: with the debate just day away the senator made several campaign stops in the bay area today. previewing what both she and her opponent suggests will be the central theme in that debate. the economy. >> barbara boxer!

>> reporter: senator boxer started the day in oakland rallying and coaching campaign workers on what to say to voters as they go door to door. >> first and foremost it's about jobs, jobs and jobs. >> reporter: boxer was then off to a campaign rally in santa rosa where she talked jobs and what she said are the ones tried and failed policies of her opponent. >> her view is to go back to yesterday. to the george bush policies. tax cuts to the wealthy, to the large corporations and everybody else will stand there and hope something trickles down. >> reporter: her opponent didn't have any public events today but her spokeswoman questioned boxer's job creating call indications. this is somebody that run around touting her record of accomplishment but the people of california haven't been given the jobs they were promised by her. >> reporter: they are both locked in a tight race.

the latest poll showed boxer leading by 47 to 44%, a dead heat. the campaign said voters split between the candidates will see the difference if as they hope the economy is the focus of wednesday's candidate faceoff. >> we have 21 county was unemployment rates over 15%. people are continuing to loose their jobs. it's on the top of everybody's mind. >> reporter: boxer a three term senator said she wants to highlight the differences beyond just economics with her opponent. >> i will tell the truth about her record, my record, our stance on the issues so you know i hope i get the opportunity to touch on all those things. >> reporter: the race for boxer's seat is of course expected to be extraordinarily expensive. her opponent is wealthy but her campaign war chest stood at less than a million dollars compared to boxer's 11 million.

. in news of the world three united states service members died in separate attacks in afghanistan. that brings the number of troops killed there this month to 38. in eastern afghanistan taliban militants launched predawn attacks on two united states run bases. 20 died in the failed attempt to storm a nato base and united states intelligence camp near the pakistan border. no united states or coalition troops were killed in those battles. in canada a former canada idol contestant is the latest charged in a suspected terror cell. the 28-year-old appeared in a canada courtroom today. three others were arrested earlier this week. the men allegedly planned to

bomb the canada parliament building. they play have been raising money for al-qaeda and the taliban. in pakistan a small group gave up to pakistan security forces today after a tense gun battle and standoff. the men had taken two security guards hostage last night. the state department said it wasn't the target of the attack and no employees were hurt. >> nasa joining in international effort to help the 33miners trapped underground. food, water, medical supplies and even a camera has been sent down to the men through a four inch wide shaft. the 33 were found alive on sunday. they have been underground for 23 days. nasa is being asked to use its experience to keep the group healthy and sane while they wait for rescue. >> our plan is to go down and provide advice that chile has requested in the areas of

the 23-year-old yearly street fest has music, food and lots of activities. pope enjoyed the sun this afternoon as they support hundreds of booths. it continuous tomorrow between. the eat real festival also attracted crowds at jack london square. it's a chance for new chefs to show off anfor those eating to enjoy gourmet items. each dish costs five dollars or less. tomorrow's event includes demonstrations of making cheese, home made sausage and of course raspberry jam. >> i'm hungy now. there is a lot to talk about sports wise. >> the giants, niners, raider, all playing right now. after being shut out last night the giants hoping to find the bats that were presents for three games against cincinnati. they and the diamondbacks just underway. hard to know who to pull for this week in san diego if you are a gianting fan.

the padres hosting the phillies. phillies broke a tie in the 7th when victorino hit this drive to center. making a dive but can't get the ball while it rolls. werth coming all the way around to score. the phillies would go onto win. right now they lead the giants by a game in the wild card. the padres lead the west by five and a half. the niners welcomed their last wayward player into the fold. with training camp over, franklin signed his 7 million- dollar franchise tag tender. the niners and raiders just underway. we will have that at ten. on thursday he was a co leader. tomorrow he will just hope to play a solid round to stay in the top 100. tiger on his first hole today of the barkleys in new jersey. that was a put for double bogie. he would get a round of one over parr to end his day. he needs to finish in the top 100 of this event.
