police cruiser in san diego. a man hunt has been in place since yesterday. allie rasmus has been following the story. she joins us now with an update. >> reporter: investigators took a plane to san diego, they are there to investigate a man who they believe shot and killed an officer. tonight he is in custody. >> he has contacted several arteries, leading in and out of california. everyone was on alert for this guy. >> reporter: oakland police suspected barrientos would head to the u.s.-mexico border. this is video of barrientos mouthing the words i love you mom to the camera.

police say he was armed with a nine millimeter during his arrest. san diego police say one of their officers spotted a man fitting barrientos description in this thunder bird. >> the police sergeant pulled in behind it, stopped the vehicle. challenged the occupants, one of the occupants identified himself as being the suspect of the shooting in oakland. >> reporter: they say the second person was the person in charge of driving barrientos across the boarder. police also arrested a woman accused of aiding barrientos escape. barrientos had been on the run from the law since yesterday

afternoon. he's accused of shooting and critically wounding officertodd young. officer young tried to arrest him at a home in bancroft in oakland. that's when barriento opened fire, shooting officer young. >> he is in critical condition. >> reporter: he required a transfusion of 60 units of blood. >> as long as he is able to survive, you know the better his chances are. but he's still is very much on the edge. >> reporter: officer young is expected to go a second surgery in the next couple of day. he says officer young does need

homelessman homeless man early this morning. police say they have made no arrests and are investigating the motive, so far there is no description of the killer. authorities tonight are looking for a missing elderly man from diablo who drove off this afternoon during a family gathering. 84 albert marcoti disappeared tr his home. the family says marcoti was in an white infinity suv. they say he may be headed to san francisco. marcoti is 6'tall, 200 pounds with grey hair. the license plate is 4mvp860. he was last seen wearing short, a striped sweater with a black leather jacket. a fatal incident between a

young man and a bus. the man was killed. a bus passenger says he saw the man jump in front of the bus as it approached a bus stop. police are saying very little about the incident. the man has not been identified but police say he appears to be about 24 years old. president obama will visit new orleans tomorrow as the country marks the fifth anniversary of hurricane katrina. the storm and aftermath killed 1,800 people and left hundreds more homeless. kraig debro talked to residents. >> reporter: new orleans is still in various stages of recovery five years after hurricane ike. residents gathered hoping to say goodbye to painful memories. >> today we come together to bury katrina. >> reporter: katrina leaves behind painful wounds and deep

will be here for less than a day. but members of the organization have been here through the week to talk about federal aid and the recovery already governor arnold schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in yuba county where a wildfire continues to burn out of control tonight. firefighters battle the bullard fire. it's burning 35 miles north. the fire began about 4:00 p.m. yesterday near bar reservoir. no word on how it started. socialite paris hilton is out of jail tonight after being arrested for allegedly having cocaine in her purse. police say the 29-year-old was driving in an suv on the las vegas strip last night when officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and pulled it over.

and before that trip to israel, she will participate in a debate. a highway patrol says an unidentified man was driving under the influence when he crash into a hole in brentwood boulevard at 4:13 this morning. the accident sparked a grass fire that grew to 20 acres before being contained just before dawn. the driver was taken to john mere medical center with serious injuries. fire investigators in the central valley say an arsonist may have caused a rant fire that killed hundreds of chickens. flames broke out early yesterday morning at a county ranch destroyed an acre covered with chicken coops.

firefighters managed to save them. the local spca removed the dead birds. no people were injured and no suspects were named. damage is estimated at $25,000. a baby girl is back home with her mother tonight after her father allegedly kill kidnapped her yesterday from a day -- allegedly kidnapped her from a day care yesterday. martinez took the girl and threatened to kill her and the daughter. officers persuaded martinez to turn himself in. an 84-year-old woman with alzheimer's disease is safe tonight after wandering away from her home in hillsboro yesterday morning. search teams found joy alb era in a dry creek bed about a half mile from her house. alb era was taken to the hospital. but they say besides being shaken up she appeared today.

folsome prison remains in lock down today. prison officials say guards initially fired chemical agents and rubber bullets to stop the 200 rioting inmates. the tactics did not work and guards then used their firearms. two inmates were hospitalized from injuries inflected by other inmates. a federal judge in san francisco has called for better care for disabled inmates saying the prison system is doing a poor job. the tentative ruling rejected the system's bid to end nine years of court oversight. the prison system has four days to file objections before the judge making his final ruling.

studies show about 4% of the inmate's population are mentally disabled. the $1.2 billion comes from the emergency jobs bill president obama signed earlier this month. california was the first state to file an application to receive their share of the funds. the hope was to help kindergartners. men have long been required to wear a jacket and tie on the floor of the council but it's never clear what the dress code was for women. the policy was suspended to allow time for more discussion.

practice. yesterday the u.s. bureau of land management asked the national academy of sciences to review its wild horse and burro program. the program includes frequent round ups because the bureau says there isn't enough range land to support the population. the agencies were asked to stop the round up. the studies will take two years, so for now the round ups will continue. signs of renewal are now growing at the world trade center site in new york. today workers planted the first trees there since the september 11 attacks. eventually 400 trees will be in place at the site. an on-site museum is scheduled to open in 2012. medicare is expanding it's coverage for smokers who want to quit. medicare will pay for as many

talking about record heat, today we're tracking a weather system, cig significant cool down here. right now the maps, i can show you this the, cloud cover really concentrated to the north and east of the area. speaking to the north and east right around lake tahoe. we still have mostly cloudy skies, showers for tomorrow, we could be talking about snow leveling down to 8,000 feet for the higher terrain of the sierra for your sunday. back here across the region, we still have lower clouds pushing back into the region out toward san francisco and also right around oakland, right around the rim of the bay. as far as temperatures from today, most areas cooled about four to 8 degrees from yesterday's highs. temperatures range right around 60 coast side. you would see some of the cloud formations we saw earlier this
