>> -- okay in san francisco along northbound 101. now let's go back to the desk. >> at 6:00 the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer has now reportedly confessed. claudine wong is at highland hospital where that hovesser is being treated. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, officer todd young being watched closely here at highland hospital. we are told that he is heavily sedated and has undergone two surgeries with more expected. while the folks here remain focused on his survival and recovery, the focus this morning is listen on the suspected gunman. this morning andrew bar ri ins to is waking up aking up in

jail on charges. it is unclear when he is heading back. this community is folk cushioned on officer young. he has undergone two surgeries and needed blood. they saw a rush of people after a plea went out for donations and a large number of the people who came in were police officers. >> when we needed help, support, when we lost one of our officers a short time ago fremont was one of the first agencies knocking on our door to help. >> reporter: the shooting happened on friday afternoon at about 4:00 after young and other officers tried to arrest barrientos on domestic violence charges in east oakland. he fired his gun 10 times hitting young twice before trying to get away before he then carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint. the man got away and was caught trying to cross the border. two other people have been

arrested for helping him flee. back here the officer will need more surgery but right now they say they are trying to get the temporary fixes in. they are trying to make sure he gets his strength back before they worry about his full recovery. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> you can get much more information by going to our channel 2 website, ktvu.com. just click on the bay area news tab. it is right near the top of the page. >> this morning the chp is investigating an apparent hit- and-run crash that has one pedestrian fighting for his life. it happened at about 11:30 last night on westbound 980 in oakland on the 27th street off- ramp. several drivers spotted him lying on the side of the highway. investigators believe a passing vehicle hit him and then sped off. the victim is listed in critical condition. the chp is urging witnesses to step forward. >> an investigation continues into a deadly high rise

apartment fire in san francisco. it started early yesterday morning, 8 stories up at the trinity towers. a woman jumped to her death from her burping amount. another man had to by treated for burns. >> it was a small apartment not completely in flamed -- [overlapping speakers] [ inaudible ] >> -- under investigation. san francisco police are warning residents about a series of vehicle breakins in normally quiet neighborhoods. ktvu's kraig debro joining us now with the details. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, dave. and i think it is one of those things that unless -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: -- this morning, we are actually at the corner of noe and 24th and very few people have noticed a rash or an increase in auto breakins but that is exactly what police

say they have out here. other neighborhoods have also reported an increase. and the neighborhoods including this one, the suspects or suspects are breaking into a line of parked cars on the same block all at once. you can imagine police say that is high risk behavior but it hasn't deterred the criminal or criminals. they just continue breaking into that line of cars. police say the best thing to do is to call them. call the police. here are a couple of locations where they have had. the first three are a good example of that theory. august 20th, 6:30 in the morning an auto breakin there. then at 8:00 in the morning -- this is not in se consequence, just the same day. an auto breakin there -- [ inaudible ] >> -- down the line here thursday, august 19th the day

before, auto break in there, then tuesday, august 17th, yet another break in there. these are just some of the examples of the auto break -- [ inaudible ] >> -- having recently and the key here is to note that in some instances the thief or thieves will break into a line of cars so when they break the window out of course, that is going to -- [ inaudible ] >> -- hear that, apparently they don't really care. they just keep on in the same row of cars. they are calling it high risk behavior and the suggestion is if they are willing to do that they are not concerned about getting caught or being witnessed. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> san jose police are investigating two serious incidents, part of what is being called an unusually violent weekend. the latest happened on wong court where three police officers shot and killed a man yesterday morning. police were called to the man's apartment after getting reports he had shot himself with a nail gun several times. well, when police arrived they found hem holding a 10 inch knife and police say they

opened fire. those police officers have been placed on administrative leave. in another incident saturday night police say a 26- year-old man and a 27-year-old man were shot and killed at a parking lot of an apartment complex on san antonio court. now a woman was also hurt and treated at a hospital. investigators say it appears it was k mind 0 altercation between two groups of people. they are investigating whether that shooting was gang related. >> hayward police are searching for the suspect in a deadly shooting. police responded to cottage park drive at 4:00 yesterday afternoon after getting a 911 call. they found a man who had been shot in the abdomen of the he later died at the hospital. the investigation continues. san francisco police are reporting a surge in domestic violence calls. statistics published in the examiner show 911 operators received more than 7300 calls

in the past year. that is 600 more than the previous year but crime experts point to two main reasons for the increase. one budget cuts have resulted in fewer domestic violence patrols and more domestic violence victims feel safe enough to call police. >> 6:07. the first wave of national guard troops are about to be deployed today to help increase the security along the u.s.- mexico border. they are going to be stationed in arizona. then on wednesday another group, the first of 224 guardsmen set aside for california will be coming to our state to help coup an eye out for illegal border crossings but won't have the power to arrest anyone. a man runway at the san jose airport will be closed today to allow crews to start building a taxiway extension project. the work should not effect airline schedules or operations. that 1 ray will partly re-open at the end of the week,

well, good morning to you, welcome back, time now 6:14. it was a led deweekend for american troops in afghanistan. nato says seven u.s. service members were killed. two died in bombings yesterday in southern afghanistan. two more died in a bomb attack in the south on saturday. three died in fighting in the east the same day.

42 u.s. servicemen have been killed in afghanistan just this month. that follows july's all time high of 66 americans killed. >> a new audit reveals the u.s. has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on abandoned reconstruction projects in iraq. alison burns joins us from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the details. good morning, alison. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, pam. it is an outrageous report that the u.s. has wasted more than $5 billion on failed or incomplete reconstruction projects in iraq. now we checked out the website this morning for the u.s. army corps of engineers in iraq. it says pictures of ground breakings, a finished bridge and other scenes of success but also shows projects the top u.s. government watch dog in iraq says are not finished like this children's hospital one of the biggest u.s. reconstruction projects in the country. its opening has been delayed

for more than six years, that hospital costs $165 million and it is still not open. now some other failed projects include a $100 million wastewater treatment facility and a $40 million prison north of baghdad that sits empty. the future of all of these projects is unclear as the u.s. government begins its withdrawal from iraq. reporting live from washington, d.c.,ly sons son burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> former baseball star roger clemens has a court date in washington, d.c. today. the seven time cy young award winner is scheduled to be arraigned on a federal indictment. prosecutors accuse him of lying to congress. clemens is expected to plead not guilty to charges that could send hill to prison for 30 years. >> 6:16. state lawmakers are considering a dress code for women. the men have long been required

to wear a jacket and tie when on the floor but it has never been clear what appropriate business attire means for women. the sacramento bee reports that women were notified last week they have to wear sweaters or jackets but that was suspended. city officials at half moon bay say they are counting on a local sales tax measure to pass in november to keep the city from dissolving. measure k is a one cent sales tax expected to generate $1.5 million for the next seven years. if it is not proved the city would have to disincorporate. >> the u.s. coast guard came to the rescue of four people stuck on a stalled boat off the marin county coast. the rescue took place last night about 12 miles south of point reyes. the coast guard says the four people on board suffered minor injuries after a window on the

boat shattered. the sailors ranged in age from 55 to 90. they left san francisco apparently for a sailing trip to alaska. it is sentencing day for the two men convicted of killing fairfield city councilman matt gar cy a defense lawyers for the two killers will ask for a delay today as they push for new trials. earlier this year two separate juries convicted them of murder. garcia was shot and killed outside a friend's home two years ago. police say that he was mistaken for a drug dealer who reportedly owed money to combs and williams. >> our time now 6:18. let's see what is happening on the roads. sal has got all the details. >> dave and pam, right now we are doing pretty well if you are driving on most bay area roads. you will see that traffic is moving well. there is a little bit of something going on westbound 237 at 880. not really causing a big jam. also this morning looking at

quarter million apps at its store. an industry tracker says 70% are paid apps in sharp contrast with the 2/3 of google's android apps which are free. >> a flu report points a finger of blame in the gulf oil disaster and we are learning about their pr campaign. >> cal fire has more information on that wildfire that forced many people out of their homes. >> 680 traffic is moving well to the south bay. we will tell you more about the morning commute straight ahead.

♪[ music ] >> good morning, traffic is moving well on bay area bridges right now. westbound bay bridge traffic is light. richmond bridge traffic looks -- [ inaudible ] >> -- sneeze there. golden gate bridge and richmond track looking okay. back to the desk. >> lower temperatures and letter winds are helping crews get a handle on that big wildfire that has burned more than 1300 acres. the bullard's fire is in a rugged part of the tahoe national forest. it started friday afternoon. it is now 60% contained. full containment is expected

tomorrow. no homes have been lost but there were some weekend evacuations, everyone is back home now. still no word on what caused the fire. san quintin prison officials say an inmate just saved from the death penalty committed suicide. 70-year-old george hat ton nighty has been on death row since 1989 for the murder of a san andre us woman. last week his sentenced was reduced to life without parole following a psychological evaluation. he was found dead in his cell saturday. he apparently hanged himself. an investigation has begun at folsum state prison after a riot sent seven inmates to the hospital. friday night's disturbance began in the exercise yard and lasted 30 minutes guards at first used chemical agents and rubber bullets to get them under control but that didn't work so they fired their weapons. five inmates were shot. two others hurt but none of the

injuries are said to be life- threatening. >> a new report says bp now blames its own engineers for some of the problems that led up to the massive oil spill in the gulf of mexico. bloomberg reports an internal investigation says mistakes made by bp engineer while finishing the deep see oil well are partially to blame. that probe also blames bp engineers for misreading pressure data which indicated a blowout at the deep water horizon rig was imminute when the reading was taken the day of the explosion at the rig. bp is not commenting on the report. now bp is expected to admit that it has spent millions -- a million dollars a week on aid oand television advertising since the explosion in the gulf. the american ads mostly feature bp employees involved in the clean up process explaining what the company is doing in effected areas. president obama has already warned bp that he does not want to hear the company is spending money on shareholders and ads

while holding back on payments to effect small businesses and fishermen. >> officials still don't know the motive of a gunman who shot and killed a church official near fresno. the victim was a father of six and the bishop at the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints. witnesses told police the suspect walked into the church yesterday and asked for the leader, then started shooting. >> the morning congregation had finished its meetings, clay was still in the building but the majority of the people had exited. >> now police later found the suspected gunman inside of a home. police shot and killed him after they say he opened fire on them. police have not identified the suspect yet but stay he was not a church member. time now 6:27. up next some people fear an historic east bay park has taken a turn for the worst.

traders are a little busier there -- [overlapping speakers] [ inaudible ] >> -- lower as expected but pretty good night overnight. we will keep watching the numbers. european markets mostly higher this morning. >> we will go ahead and welcome you, thank you for joining us, good morning to you. joining us here on the ktvu morning news, monday, august the 30th. i am dave clark. >> od morning. i am pam cook. time now is 6:30. ktvu has learned the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer has confeesed. claudine wong is at highland hospital with an update on the investigation and the officer's condition, claudine. >> reporter: well, good morning, pam, yes, we just got off the phone with a nursing supervisor here. that supervisor telling us his condition has been upgrated to serious. that was good news. he was listed as critical for a good portion here. just within the last half-hour a fremont officer that also

showed up here -- [ inaudible ] >> -- certainly really everyone at this point certainly grateful that officer young has made it through the two surgeries. there is still, however, a long road ahead. young has two children, an eight-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son. the fremont police chief told the chronicle young -- [ inaudible ] >> -- sedated while he has made it through these initial surgeries it seems pretty clear that he will need more. certainly in these type of situations people feel a little hopeless so when they asked for people people responded. he needed at least 60 pints of blood and they asked people to donate blood in his name. people did just that. >> for me today this is all i am able to do for todd. >> reporter: let'ses take you back to how all this happened. confessed to that friday afternoon shooting. barrientos was wanted on domestic violence charges. police say he fired at least ten shots at young and other officers who tried to arrest him friday. he was caught while trying to get over the border and booked into jail yesterday morning. we have talked to the jail this morning to ask them when he will be headed back to the bay area but that is still unclear. we will continue to check on that and continue to check on officer young's condition here at highland. again he has been upgraded. so certainly that is good news at this hour. oakland. it happened on westbound 980. jade hernandez is there now with some new information. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we have just learned that the call that came in was originally from a person who flagged down firefighters to get this man help. that original caller believed that the victim that they found was dead. we are live near where they believe this hit-and-run happened. we have learned from the chp within the hour the man suffered several broken bones and major head injuries. he is in critical condition but doctors do expect him to pull through. the california highway patrol says he did not have identification with him but they did find a backpack. the officers could not find any physical evidence of a hit and run accident but the young man's injuries are consistent with an accident involving a car. they discovered the man on westbound 980 on the 27th street off-ramp after several drivers reported him on the

side of the freeway last night. they hope to talk to him if possible because they have vlts information in this investigation. that is where the public's help comes in this morning. they want anyone who might have seen the accident to call authorities immediately. anything will hip officers piece together what may have happened to this young man late last night. we have contacted the chp this morning and are hoping for more information for you at the top of the hour. reporting live from oakland this morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 6:35. residents in berkeley want the police to crack down on recent violence in people's park. residents complained that a new group of homeless people in the park may be to blame for a rise in crime. police say two people were attacked by a group of 20 people last wednesday and in a separate incident some tree trimmers were forced to leave the park after a group threatened them. community members say they are worried the violence will spread to nearby communities.

>> san francisco transit workers are losing their parking perks. they will soon be required to pay an $80 month fee to park at the bus yard while they work. right now parking there is free. the new fees are ected to generate $3.5 million. they come after drivers refused to make contract concessions during the budget negotiations. the san francisco chronicle reports the future of an ongoing traffic experiment on market street could be decided within the next few weeks. the city restricted traffic last year to ease congestion and make the area safer. the city says there has been a drop in traffic since it began and bicycle advocates consider it a success. nearby business owners though say it is hurting business. >> time now 6:36. let's see what is happening in the commute. any problems? >> things have quieted down

these recent auto breakins police say they are outside of the normal pattern. other neighborhoods have also reported an increes, the suspect or suspects are breaking into a line of parked cars on the same block, this is where police say this is high risk behavior because if you break into a car, you smash a window, you pull a door open somebody is going to hear that then presumably call the police and yet if you keep doing that and keep going to the next car you have a good chance of getting caught, that is why police call it high risk behavior. here are some of the breakins. good? the annual burning man begins today in the nevada desert. find out what could destroy the atmosphere. those stories and more on mornings on 2 of the now back to you. >> a new study shows an increase in the number of emergency room visits for student athletes. the numbers have tripled for young athletes between 14 and 19 and doubled for athletes between 8 and 13. researchers say it likely indicates there is more awareness about the seriousness of concussions but that may -- many still don't understand the need for treatment. they say untreated concussions can lead to learning difficulties, mesm more problems and chronic headaches over the long-term. in santa clara county school age kids who have a tough time attending school have a new on-line option. they can go to a website called liberty on-line and log in to their classes. the first such program in the bay area.
