good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. sources tell ktvu that the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer has now confessed. ktvu's claudine wong is at highland hospital now where we've just learned the officer's condition has been upgraded. you also have more on the suspect. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning tori. that's right. we're at highland hospital where a nursing supervisor has told us that the officer's condition has been upgraded to

-- from critical to serious condition. we've seen a fremont officer arrive in the last hour and a half. he didn't want to talk. this is a difficult time for the police d and family. young needed at least 60-pints of blood and it's become clear to the road that recovery will apparently be long. but this -- this community has responded. dozens of people donated blood in young's name. most did what they could. >> when we needed support when we lost one of our officers, just a short time ago, fremont was one of the first agencies knocking on the door to help. >> reporter: this all happened friday afternoon when young and the task force tried to arrest andrew barrientos on domestic

charges. police fired. police say he's a suspected gang member. sources say since his arrest on saturday night. he's confessed to the shooting. what's still unclear is when he will be headed back to the bay area. we have been talking to jail officials in san diego county this morning. they say they don't have a set time but certainly people have said he could be back as soon as today. we're gonna continue to check on that. if we get any, we'll bring them to you. live in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators want your help following an overnight hit- and-run accident in oakland. jade hernandez is at the scene with the very latest on what happened out there. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we've learned the call about this man came in from someone who flagged down firefighters for help. they thought they found a body and, in fact, they thought the person was dead but not the case. we're live in oakland this morning. we're live near where the chp believes this accident may have

happened near this offramp here. the 27th street offramp near went 980. the driver -- westbound 980. we're live here in oakland. the chp tells us this morning the man hit suffered several broken bones and major injuries. he's in the hospital in critical condition. the california highway patrol says the man found did not have identification with him but they did find a backpack near the scene. they are at this point still referring to him as john doe. officers could not find any physical evidence of a hit-and- run accident but the young man's injuries are consistent with an accident involving a car. the chp hopes to talk to the man at some point if possible because they have very little information in this investigation. that's where the community's help comes in this morning. the chp wants anyone who might have seen the accident to call

authorities immediately. anything will help officers piece together what may have happened to this man last night. we contacted the chp and are hoping for more information for you coming up. reporting live from oakland, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 7:03. overnight, the coast guard rescued four people from a stalled boat off a marin county coast. the rescue happened about 12 miles south of point reyes. the four people on board suffered minor injuries when a window on the boat shattered. the sailors ranged in ages between 55 and 90 years old. they've left san francisco for a sailing trip to alaska. police went to a man's apartment yesterday after a call that he shot himself with a nail gun several times. officers say they opened fire because he was holding a 0-inch knife when they arrived and was

confrontational. police had kak before but his fill -- contact before but his criminal history is unknown. investigators say a 26-year- old man and a 27-year-old -- and a 27-year-old men on saturday night were shot and killed of an parking lot of an apartment complex on san antonio court. a 19-year-old was also injured and treated at a hospital. investigators say it appears there was an altercation between two groups of people. they are looking into whether the shooting was gang-related. the investigation continues now into a deadly high rise apartment fire in san francisco. this started early yesterday morning, eight stories up at the trinity towers on o'farrell. a woman jumped to her death. another man had to be treated

bid. dell is assessing whether a higher bid would be in their best interest. intel is buying the wire les german division for $ $1.2 million. intel says this is part of the connected commute -- commuting strategy. the deal's expected to close by march of last yeex. all of these -- of next year. all of these merge e's are good for the -- mergers are good for the long-term economy. but in the short-term it means less jobs which will be a problem. 7:1 1. as the u.s. continues to withdraw troops

on wednesday, a group, the first 224 guardsmen, allocated will led to illegal border crossing but will not have the authority to address anyone. across border in texas, gunman assassinated the mayor of a town in the middle of a drug war and injured his daughter. there's no official word who is responsible but the mexican president made reference to gangs. this comes after a series of explosions yesterday and the assassination of another mayor last week along with the execution of 72 migrants. it has been a deadly weekend for american troops in afghanistan. nato reports seven u.s. service members were killed. two died in bombings yesterday in southern afghanistan. two more died in the bomb attack in the south on saturday. three died in fighting in the

east the very same day. 42 u.s. service members have been killed in afghanistan just this month. that follows july's all-time of 66 americans killed. as troops begin to leave iraq, they leave behind abandoned and very expensive projects. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. with a look at how much taxpayer money has been wasted. >> reporter: good morning. it's a startling number. the top u.s. government watchdog in iraq says more than 0% of the money the u.s. has spent on reconstruction projects in iraq has been wasted on projects that have been abandoned or are incomplete. that's $5 billion down the drain. now, one example is the basra children's hospital. here we have a picture of it. it's one of the largest projects undertaken by the u.s. it's opening has been delayed

housing development. president obama promised not to abandon the recovery effort in the gulf. >> i will stand behind you until new orleans is all the way back. >> reporter: more than 1800 people died in the wake of hurricane katrina. 80% of new orleans was flooded when the levees broke. president obama says work on a fortified levee system will be complete by next year. a new report says that bp is blaming its own engineers for some of the oil that leaked into the gulf of mexico. the bloomberg report shows mistakes made by bpic nears while finish irk the deep sea oil well are partly to blame. that investigation also blames bp engineers for misreading the pressure data that indicated a

reading was incorrect. san jose mineta airport is closing down one of its main runways today to allow crews to begin construction on a taxi project. the shutdown should not impact schedules. the project is not expected to be fully completed until november. city leaders are counting on measure k, a one-cent sales tax is expected to generate $1.5 million each year for the next seven years. if it's not approved the city may have to disincriminate, that may include turning some

7:23. san quentin prison officials say an inmate who was just saved from the doilt has committed -- death penalty has committed suicide. the man has been on death row since 1989 for the murder of a san andreas woman. last week his sentence was reduced to life without parole. he was found dead in his cell saturday. he arnt payly hanged himself --

apparently hanged himself. a riot sent seven inmates to the hospital at a folsom prison. guards initially used chemical agents and rubber budgets to try to get the 200 rioting agents under control but when that didn't work, they resorted to firing their weapons. 7:23. a tragedy at the indianapolis motor speedway, a 13-year-old motorcycle racer was killed in an accident. the young boy was liter linse, he crashed during a warmup and then was hit by another rider. he was rushed to the hospital but died later from his injuries. no one else was hurt. track officials say the young man was the youngest racer killed at the track. we want to check in with sal castanedo, keeping a close eye on this monday morning commute. >> all right. tori and dave. not a good going on when it comes to problems.

there have been slowdowns already for this monday morning. westbound 24 driving up to the tunnel. you will see slow and go traffic here and there because the la fayette area and oakland. both on the orinda side and on the oakland side of the tuble. bay bridge is barked up for about a 10 minute to 15-minute delay. no major problems have been checking the tweets. haven't heard anything about b.a.r.t., caltrain or muni. fortunately, not a lot of angry people out there. northbound 101 approaching the 80 split in san francisco, that traffic is moving along okay. 7:25. hello, steve. hello, sal. any weather treats? >> a couple. it's a little cool. a lot of 40s especially up towards the north bay. mostly sunny, though, a little breeze has kicked in. it will be sunny and breezy

ktvu has learned that the man accuser of shooting a fremont police officer has now confessed. ktvu's claudine wong is at highland hospital where the officer is still being treated. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, it looks like it will be a long road ahead for officer todd young. the good news, he's been upgraded from critical condition to serious condition. that came from a nursing supervisor here at highland hospital. we also have witnessed the steady stream of people to visit him. there was a fremont officer here this morning even before the sun came up coming to the hospital. he didn't talk this morning.

you have to remember this has been a very difficult time for family, friends and the law enforcement community. officer young has made it through two surgeries. but there's still a long road ahead. the fremont police chief telling the "chronicle" that young has talked to his children and his wife has been at his side. he's been heavily sedated through this process. it's pretty clear that while he's already had two surgeries he will need more. certainly in these type of situations people feel helpless. so when this situation arose, people rose to the occasion and gave 60-pints of blood. >> to me, this is all i'm able to do for todd. he's in the hospital. we can't visit hill. he still has surgeries to go. >> reporter: let's take you back to all of this happened. you are looking at 20-year-old andrew barrientos. the man police say shot officer

young. ktvu sources say he's her confessed to the shooting. now, barrientos was wanted on domestic violence charges. police say he fired at the officer and the other police trying to capture him. he was booked into jail saturday morning. the big question is when he will be headed back up to the bay area. we not alameda county district attorney's office sent a couple of folks down to san diego to talk to him. but when he will be brought here, that's still unclear. we'll bring you any updates coming up on "mornings on 2." you can get more information on this case by going to our channel 2 website, just click on the bay area news tab near the top of the page. california state budget is 61 days overdue with criticism aimed at governor

schwarzenegger and the legislature is growing. in the past, the big five political leaders would meet and negotiate behind closed doors. this year, the governor called his first big five meeting last thursday. they only met for an hour. they agreed to schedule a budget vote for tomorrow. five of the seven oakland child care programs scheduled for closure will open this morning. now, they were supposed to close today but at the last minute, the school district came up with the money that's needed to keep them running least through december. the centers will not open today are golden gate and santa fe in north oakland. parents say dealing with these closures will be tough. >> once they close, i don't know what the future will be for him an myself -- and

myself. a once powerful supporter of the republican candidate for california governor has nearly disappeared from public view. former governor pete wilson provided meg whitman with a powerful endorsement. he felt whitman would be especially tough on illegal immigrations, an issue very close to his heart. many feel he's become a political liability now that whitman will win over latino voters. glenn be says he has no desire to run for president. he said that on fox news sunday after an appearance with sarah palin over the weekend. they spoke at a restoring honor rally on the national mall in washington, d.c. it was about two years ago that palin appeared for five-day forecast

time, jock mccain, as his running mate. hayward police are searching for a suspect during a deadly shooting. police responded to cottage park drive yesterday afternoon. they found a man shot in the abdomen. he died later at the hospital. that investigation don'ts. san francisco police want information about a suspect who killed a homeless man in golden gate park. now, the body was found near keisar stadium saturday morning. police say it looks like the man was beaten to death. the victim was later identified as 53-year-old michael ponder. police have no description yet of the killer. san francisco police are warning people about a series of car break-ins in normally quiet neighborhoods. they happened in diamond heights, glen park. police say the break-s in are unusual because the suspect or suspects broke into several cars parked on the same block at the same time.

"san francisco chronicle" reports the future of an ongoing experiment on market street could be decided within the next couple of weeks. the city started to restrict the traffic between 0th and 6th street last year. they are trying to ease a confession and also -- congestion and also make the

for i -- warnings are in effect for the caribbean islands as category earl moves forward. in the meantime, hurricane danielle is getting weaker but still causing problems on the east coast. the national hurricane hurricane center says -- center has daniel could be downgraded. thousands of people in indonesia are being forced from their homes after a volcano erupted for several days. some planes had to be diverted because of poor visibility. emergency items, like food and water, are being sent for those in need. this volcano has not erupted in more than 400 years. there is a small but growing trend of students starting their school day by firing up their computers at

investors have been honing in on employment data, a key way to predict where the economy is going.

right now the dow and nasdaq are down. there are several good signs from the auto industry. the number of borrowers making late payments on their auto loans dropped. the rate of payments slipped over .5 between april and june. compared to .75 for the same period last year the number of loans increased by 19%. the amount being borrowed edged up nearly $100. gasoline prices have dropped more than 7 cents across the country in the last two weeks, the national average price for a gallon of regular is $2.68 according to triple-a in. here in the bay area, san francisco drivers are paying 3.21. that's down 3 cents from last month in oakland and san jose. the average is 3.11, down more than a nickel from last month. 7:45. reports of a weakening housing market could drive home prices

right now with the details on what's happening. >> good morning. i think there is a perception that people's spark is a troubled spot. i did take a look at the web page. people's park have had eight alerts issued on them. the latest sounds kind of scary it happened last wednesday, police responded to a call that up to 20 people were beating a woman at people's park. police confirm the report and found another victim here as west that victim was trying to help the woman. apparently, the two people did not know each other but the woman was being attacked by more than 20 people. a man trying to stop the attack was hit over the head with a skateboard. police say the manned an woman didn't know each other. this all began over the argument of disciplining a dog.

on them. police have not identified the suspect but say he was not a church member. san francisco police are reporting a surge in domestic violence calls. statistics published in the san francisco examiner show 911 received 7100 calls. that's 600 more than the previous year. budget cuts, domestic violence programs, more domestic violence victims feel more about feeling safe are the reasons for the increase. attorney david levin and other festival fans say federal officers are too heavy-handed in their making rest to justify. this monday, some 50,000 people are expected to be there.

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. it's monday, august 30th. well, ktvu has learned that the man accused of shooting a fremont police officer has now confessed. ktvu's claudine wong is at highland hospital with an update on the information and also more on the condition of that officer. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. let's first talk about this investigation. i just got off the phone with the san diego police department. the man who is suspected of shooting officer todd young is waking up in jail this morning. when they will be back here,

it's unclear. we are told he could come up as early as today to the bay area. but we just don't know for sure when that trip will be made. what we do know is that officer young acondition has been upgraded to serious from critical. he had been listed in critical condition for the last couple of days. we've also seen the show of support starting early this morning when a fremont man arrived at the hospital. this is a difficult time for family and friends and the law enforcement community as they've launch -- watched the 39-year-old fremont officer todd be taken into surgery twice. young needed at least 60 points of blood and it's become clear that his road to recovery is just beginning. this community has also responded to any way they can. over the weekend, dozens of people donated blood in his name. most say they just wanted to do what they could to help.

when we needed help, fremont was one of the first answers that were knock -- agencies that were knocking on our door to help. >> reporter: this all started friday afternoon when young and a task force tried to arrest 20- year-old andrew barrientos on domestic violence charges. police say barrientos fired at least ten times and hit young twice. barrientos then carjacked a car and tried to get over the border in mexico. police say he's a suspected gang members and sources tell ktvu he has confessed to the shooting. i have talked to san diego county sheriff department officials as well as police officers. it was a san diego police officer who spotted barrientos based on a description that spotted him, pulled his gun and arrested him and a friend without incident. certainly they are crediting his alertness from keeping him from crossing the border. but that being said at this

point, both san diego pd and san diego county say their job is done. they are gonna put this in the hands of the agency. a young man is fighting for his life following an overnight hit and run. jade hernandez is live with new information. >> reporter: the california highway patrol says they aren't even sure this was a hit and run. we just got off the phone with a spokesman from the chp. here's sergeant trent cross. >> right now, it's unknown how long he was out there and we're not certain if it was a hit and run because there's no injuries injuries -- [ inaudible ] >> there's no evidence to indicate a person was struck by a vehicle. >> reporter: the chp says this

man may have been dropped off and ended up on the side of the freeway. they are investigating this as a hit and run. but they are not sure what happened. officers differ cored the -- discovered the vimed on the 27th street offramp in oakland after several drivers reported seeing the man late last night around 1:30. paramedics rushed the man to the hospital with severe head and internal injuries and multiple broken bones. the man is in the hospital with with critical conditions but they expect him to pull through. the chp says the man did not have identification with him. but there was a backpack near the scene which they searched. the chp is referring to the man right now as john doe. the chp hopes to talk to the man at some point if possible because they have very little information in this

investigation. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. four minutes after 8:00. overnight the u.s. coast guard came to the rescue of four people trapped on a stalled boat off the marin county coast. the rescue happened 12 miles south of point reyes. the stranded individuals activateed an alert. a window on the boat shattered. they ranged in age between 55 and 95 years old. 8:05. we're getting more information about that deadly officer involved shooting of san jose where a 42-year-old man was killed. now, police went to the man's hospital yesterday after getting a 91 1 call that he had shot himself with a nail gun several times. police say they opened fire because he was holding a 0-inch knife when they arrived. and he was confrontational.

police had had contact with the man before but his criminal history isn't known to us yet. the three officers are on leave until an investigation is completed. san jose police are also investigating another deadly incident that took place saturday night. investigators say a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were both shot and killed at a parking lot of an apartment complex on san antonio court. a 19-year-old woman was also hurt and treated at a hospital of investigators say it appears there was some type of altercation between two groups of people. they are investigating whether the shoot something gang- related. the investigation continues into a deadly high-rise apartment fire in san francisco. it broke out early yesterday morning. eight stories up at the trinity towers on o'farrell. one woman jumped to her death from her burning apartment. another man was rescued but had to be treated for burns. >> it's a small apartment. it wasn't completely inflamed.

welcome back. 8:13. the first wave of national guard troops set to be deployed today under president obama's plan to increase security among the u.s./mexico border. now, these soldiers will be stationed in arizona. and then on wednesday, another group, the first of 224 guardsmen allocated for california will be coming here. the troops will help key an eye out for illegal border crossings. but they won't have the authority to arrest anyone. meantime across the border from texas in mexico, gunmen assassinated the mayor of a town that's right in the middle of the drug war and injured his

its own engineers for some of the problems that led up to the oil problems in the gulf of mexico. the bloomberg report says an internal investigation shows mistakes made by bp engineers while finishing the deep-sea oil well are partially to blame. the probe blames bp engineers for misreading pressure data which indicated that a blowout was imminent when a reading was taken the day of the explosion at the rig 11 workers died in that blast. bp is not commenting on the report. 8:2. officials in one bay area city say holding car washes to raise funds for nonprofit organizations are now being discouraged. in sebastopol the concern is the runoff may con taint pluntants and that may end up in storm drains. they also point out discharging anything other than rain in storm drarms is -- storm drains is illegal.

california state -- came's state budget is now 61 days overdue. the criticism aimed at at the governor and legislature is yoking. in the past, the state's big 5 political leaders would meet and they would negotiate behind closed doors. this year, the governor called his first big 5 meeting just last thursday. they only met for one hour. they agreed to schedule a budget vote for tomorrow even though there's no compromise plan. five of the second oakland childhood care centers closed are open this morning. they were supposed to close today. the two centers that won't be open today are golden gate and santa fe in north oakland. parents say dealing dealing with these is tough.

former baseball star roger clemens is in court in washington, d.c. right now. the seven-time cy young award inwy -- winner is being arraign on a six-count federal indictment. prosecutors accuse clemens of lying to congress about his alleged use of performance- enhancing drugs. clemens is expected to plead not guilty to charges that could send him to prison for 30 years. 8:55. officials still don't know the motive of a gunman who shot and killed a mormon church official near fresno. the victim was 42-year-old clay santer. he's a father of six. the bishop at the church of jesus christ latter-day saints in visalia. witnessens tell police the suspect walked into the church yesterday, asked for the leader and started shooting. officers shot and killed him after police say he opened fire on him. police have not identified the suspect but say he was not a

church member. 8:55. san francisco police are reporting a surge in domestic violence calls. statistics published in the "san francisco examiner" show 911 operators received more than 7300 calls in the past year. that is 600 more than the previous year. crime experts point to two main reasons for the increase. budget cuts have resulted in fewer domestic violence programs. also more domestic violence victims now feel safe about calling police. a paul loy alto attorney is offering free legal advice for anyone to attend the burning man festival. federal officers are too heavy handed and are accused of making rest to justify their existence. this year's event begins monday. some 50,000 people are expected to be there.
