>> reporter: i'm tara moriarty live at sfo where we have new information about what might have caused the emergency landing of a flight bound for australia. we'll also have reaction from passengers. there are real concerns that two men from the u.s. arrested at an airport overseas may have been making a dry run for a terrorist attack. >> reporter: and is a shark sighting at a popular pacifica beach enough to keep people out of the water? we'll tell you what surfers are saying this morning. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. we are learning more this morning about what led up to an overnight air emergency. a packed quantas flight took off from sfo last night and was over the ocean when one of its engines exploded. ktvu's tear -- tara morey artie is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. we also spoke at a mechanic here at the airport. he had a chance to look at the engine. he believes it was simple wear and tear inside the engine, causing the propeller to snap creating sparks and flames. the faa still has to conduct its investigation. here's what we know -- passengers on board quantas flight 74 bound for sydney, australia actually saw fire coming out of that engine. we have some pictures of the aftermath. it looks like a huge gap on engine number one.

230 passengers were on that flight when it departed at 11:00 last night. they say the crew remained calm and the pilot decided to turn around back to sfo once problems were detected with the engines. passengers say it is an experience they will never forget. >> the -- very uncertain for a period of time until the captain announced what was going on. we had an engine that blew out. >> reporter: the emergency landing happened around 12:5 this morning. no one was hurt -- 12:45 this morning. no one was hurt. passengers are staying at nearby hotels. faa investigators should be arriving here within the hour. the plane has four engines total. we're told a 747 can fly on two to three engines but in this

case, the pilot was so close to where he had taken off from, he decided to turn back to sfo. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> tara, 200 passengers, how are they gonna get them all from sfo to sydney? i thought quantas may not have a flight from sfo to sydney? what are they gonna do? >> reporter: well, some of the passengers were told it may take them a few days to get back to sydney. some passengers may have to do is catch a flight down to l.a. and from there they can make it back to sydney. >> all right. ktvu's tara mori tara moriarty. thank you. we're getting new details about two men arrested in the netherlands when their flight landed from chicago. there are concerns that he may have been making a dry run for a terrorist attack.

suspicious items were found in their luggage, including a cell phone taped to a bottle of pepto bismol, watches attached to shampoo bottles, $7,000 in cash. the investigators discovered the luggage with the suspicious item that they went to dulles airport near washington, d.c. while the men went to amsterdam. that's not supposed to happen. >> rule number one, passengers and travelers go together. >> now, authorities are concerned those men were checking on the effectiveness of u.s. airport security. 7:0. some sufferers are ignoring shark warnings this morning posted at a popular beach. a great white was spotted yesterday from miramar beach. claudine wong is li vg with

home video and -- is live with home video and the surfers are out there. >> reporter: good morning. they have signs up warning surfers about what happened yesterday. if you take a look look in the water, you can see there are plenty of people out there. you see the parking lot filled up. people don't seem to be that concerned about these signs. the people we talked to this morning, don't seem to think it's serious enough to keep them out of the water. we want to show you this video. it's off in the distance. that was according to witnesses right after the shark rose out of the water and attacked a sea lion yesterday afternoon. it's estimated this was about 200-yards off the shoreline. one uferrer said he doesn't plan to head that far out. a couple of surfers, one said he might be a little more

cautious today. a. >> a little -- a little concerning. i think i will keep my eye out. if i see anything, i will rush back in. you know they are out there. i always keep my eye out. if i see anything, you usually -- i usually come back inside. >> reporter: so it looks like, at least for a handful of surfers out here, it's business as usual in lindamar beach. not sure if it will affect beachgoers, especially over the holiday weekend. the locals will say this beach is absolutely packed on the weekends and especially on holiday weekends. it is supposed to be a little warmer. you know, we're gonna continue to chat with folks out here, talk to some of the surfers, see what they say about being out in the water. we did talk to the gentleman that we talked to, as he came out of this water. he's a teacher in east palo alto, they don't really see

anything that concerns them to keep an eye out. they are really intent on getting a few waves in before heading to work. back to you. >> thank you. 7:06. we're just finding out this morning, the contract dispute between a.c. transit and its riders is leading to more service cuts. a.c. transit plans to announce proposed budget cuts tomorrow. that will probably slash weekend service in half, eliminate all but two overnight bus lines and shorten service hours on all of the routes. the previous plan called for a 7% reduction. it is 7:07. we want to check in now with sal castanedo, see how things are moving on this tuesday morning. speaking of public transit. the public transit agencies are telling us they are on time. but sometimes word doesn't get through. so i checked twitter. if you are taking public transportation and you are on as havele that's not moving

correctly. i will tweet it. and we'll get to the bottom of it. let's take a look at the commute on the bay bridge. you drive up to the tunnel. traffic is moderately heavy. we had a stalled vehicle in the tunnel. they had to get out and move it. the bridge traffic seems to be recovering. this morning, a live picture of interstate 880, not too bad, the traffic northbound looks pretty good. if you are driving in the santa cruz mountains. new accident in redwood estates. an accident with a motorcycle there. slow traffic in that area. here's steve. thanks, sal. a lot of fog to go around. some location, about a half- mile visibility. up above. >> sunny. the fog once it gets over the deck, burns off. we do have hurricane earl which is now a category 4. the reason

we are bringing this up now, it's moving away from puerto rico but the path that it takes will be a big determination on if the outer banks of the carolinas, also cape cod, new england, whether they see some of this or not. if it takes a far left turn, it will clip right along the coast by the weekend. if it just starts to recurve, no big people. but a category 4, moving along at 0 miles an hour -- 120 miles an hour. for us, fog, sunny, warm. san francisco, 55. 59, 64 at noon. we'll go for a high of 67. highs today -- now, mainly inland are gonna bump up a little bit. santa rosa did hit 80. 85 today. 67 in the city. walnut creek to 84 from yesterday's 78. 74 in downtown oakland an 80 in san jose after yesterday's 64. 60 at mount tamal pius.

60 degrees warmer. we've seen upper 60s to low 50s. 33 in tahoe. 48 in reno. 28 at truckee. it's cold. 50s, 60s, up and down the coast. one more system kind of has to clip the pacific northwest. we're on the southern edge of all of that. we'll see more of a north, maybe a slight northeasterly wind. warmer weather is on the way. by the weekend, what's now? another low digs into the pacific northwest. that will usher in the cooler patterns. low clouds and fog. sunshine today. warmer, bay, inland. coast will probably take another day. but 60s there, 70s. after that fog. 70s and mid-80s. tomorrow inland areas hit the

mid 90s. that would be vacaville, cloeverdale -- cloverdale. that from montpolice officer injured in the line of duty is -- that police officer injured in the line of duty is expected to have more surgery. it's reported that he's doing better. his condition was upgraded from critical to serious. at 39, the veteran police officer was shot and critically wounded while trying to arrest a man on domestic violence charges. the union city man who police say has confessed to shooting officer young is still in jail in san diego. an dree barrientos was expected to be transferred here later this week. court documents show he has a history of resisting arrest and running from the police.

on saturday, police in san diego arrested him just a couple of feet from the mexican border. a 23-year-old man who was arrested with barrientos at the border, also faces charges. and a third suspect in this case is scheduled toen arraigned later -- scheduled to be arraigned later today. he was arrested on -- she was arrested on saturday. prosecutors say she also tried to help barrientos flee the country. she's in jail in dublin. tonight, the president makes a rare otherral office address -- overall address. meg whitman had to take a break from the campaign trail because she was required to show up to court.

five american troops have been killed in attacks in afghanistan. four of them died in a roadside bomb explosion. the last couple of days have been particularly deadly for american forces in afghanistan. just since saturday, 19 u.s. service members have been killed. the total number of american troops killed in afghanistan this month is now 55. 7:5. today marks the official end of u.s. combat operations in iraq. right now, president obama is on his way to address u.s. troops personally at an army base in texas. this evening, he will address the rest of us.

alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with more. good morning, alison. >> reporter: good morning, tori. that's right. president obama is on his way right now to fort bliss, texas. here he is at andrews air force base about an hour and a half ago. he's going to fort bliss to thank u.s. troops for their service. while ther are still 50,000 troops in iraq, tonight, president obama will use his second oval office address to mark the formal end of operations there. he's cls making clear to americans that he made good on his prom -- he's also making clear to americans that he made good on his promise -- >> he will talk about the fact that we've made a determination that in july of 2011. we will begin to transition our mission in afghanistan. at the same time, vice president joe biden is in iraq. he's meeting with iraqi leaders

urging them to put aside their differences and make more progress in forming a functioning government. president obama is planning to call his predecessor, george w. bush, for his speech tonight. otherwise, the white house is not detailing what he will say. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:16. some critics say the 50,000 american troops remaining in iraq really are still combat troops. they've just been renamed "the washington post" says the units still in iraq will no longer be called brigade teams. they will be called advisory and assistance brigades. >> we're all still here. >> the troops say their mission means they are still on --

going on patrols and are on convoys. you can watch president obama's speech at 5:00. it will be streamed live at ktvu.com. back here at home, there are more police patrols at san francisco's golden gate park after yet another fatal attack. last saturday, police found the body of a homeless man near keyser stadium. an autopsy shows that michael podder was beaten to death. last march there was another vicious attack. police say the attacks don't seem to be connected. the people we've talked to said this -- >> i don't take it as an indicator of general conditions. >> 14,000 people visit the park every year and they should feel safe, it's reported. palo alto police are continuing their patrols after a strik of car burglaries.

28 break-ins have been reported in the last two weeks. most were in the downtown area and at the stanford center. those thieves have been stealing laptop computers, gps units, cell phones and other electronics. drivers, don't leave any valuables visible in your car. construction crews will break ground on a new affordable peninsula on the -- development on the peninsula. the project is about eight miles from google headquarters it will provide 124 new rentals for low and very low-income seniors. it's expected to open by next summer. word is leaking out about what steve jobs is likely to announce at tomorrow's apple event. itunes customers will get more time to sample songs they are considering buying. right now the samples last just

30 seconds. and it reports that apple will not start a service to let users store their music on apple servers and access it on their iphone. republican candidate for governor meg whitman had to add one more thing to her already busy schedule this week. jury duty. meg whitman has been out on the campaign trail. on monday, she was called for jury duty in san mateo county. she was asked along with the other potential jurors whether there was anything that would prevent her from serving. she told the judge while she's been pretty busy running for governor. the judge kept her right in the jury pool and she may have to report again on thursday. kind of interesting to have her sitting on the jury. >> yeah. 7:20. it's a case that stunned parents across the bay area. there's a new development now in the case of a petaluma toddler found wandering the streets alone. also cars and trucks could soon be sporting a letter grade

7:23. well, how noisy can motorcycles be here in california? now it's up to the governor to

decide. state lawmakers just approved a bill to punish riders whose motorcycles exceed the federal noise standards. the law will apply only to motorcycles built in the year 2013 or after that. violators will be fined. the governor who owns several motorcycles himself has not said whether he's gonna sign that bill. for the first time in 30 years, the cars on car dealer lots could offer new information to possible buyers. the epa wants cars and trucks to have new stickers and letter grades like this. a through f. that would indicate fuel consumption and emissions. the idea is to get buyers more information about fuel cost and how it affects the environment. those new labels could be on car windows by late 2011. it is 7:24. we want to check in with sal now, would is telling us it's pretty busy in eastern d.c. d.c. county.

>> d.c -- in east contra costa county. >> it's busy in contra costa county and keep in mind -- this a peek of the -- the peak of the commute there. we're watching public transportation. so far we haven't had any word of delays on the system. as i mentioned, we keep an eye on that because sometimes things are going well and then all of a sudden they go bad quickly. this is a look at the bay bridge. traffic is backed up to about the foot of the macarthur maze. we had some earlier problems as you -- there was a stalled vehicle up on the upper deck. and we have a look at northbound 17, southbound 17, there is a problem in the mountains. southbound 17 in redwood estates a minor crash. it looks like we have a few minor caltrain delays on one of the bullet trains. very minor. that's all we have. here's steve. good morning.

we have a lot of areas of fog out there. in fact, some visibility restricted to about a half-mile or less for some. over the bay, it's very mild. 50s to 60 degrees. alameda, they are 60. san jose has nothing and 60 degrees. there is a lot of locations that are calm because of the fog but that little west at 5. that's at fairfield. they can get 35, 40 miles an hour. so when they are only a little puff west at 5. there's not much of a sea breeze. once the fog burns off, there's plenty of indication that we'll warm up today. everything continues to go right down the coast. that north wind is beginning to show itself, fog, sunny, warmer. 60s, 70s. the biggest jump will be inland areas. yesterday we had lows in the 40s. today they are in the 50s. one more system goes by and then the high kicks in. i will show you real quick. this is a temperature map. by noon, yellow, 70s, 80s in

sess at sfo passengers are speaking out this morning about a frightening air emergency overnight on a quantas flight. ktvu's tara moriarty joins us with more on the investigation into what caused the engine to explode. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning, tori wha. investigators may be zeroing in on here is the propeller located inside of that malfunctioning engine.

we spoke to a mechanic who had a chance to look at the plane and he telling us this was an older model 747 and that simple wear and tear may be to blame here. now, passengers, there were 231 of them total on this flight, it was very scary moments. they saw sparks and flames, visible out of the window on one side of the plane. the explosion left a huge gash in the engine. these are photos taken once the plane had had taken -- once the plane had made the emergency landing. now, the plane took off last night at 1:00 o'clock. and some passengers said it was the most nerve-racking experience they've ever sper yunlsed. >> we were about an hour into the flight and there was a very loud shudder on the right-hand side of the plane. it wasn't turbulence. it seemed to be pretty serious damage. >> reporter: we spoke to the airport duty manager who says more than 200 passengers were

on the flight and they are staying at nearby hotels unsure of how long they will be here before they can catch another flight. >> they are gonna probably rye to get -- try to get them down to l.a.x. where there's more flights to sydney. so quantas is gonna do their best. >> reporter: sfo only has two flights a day to sydney. l.a.x. has three or four. we just spoke to a passenger on her way to l.a.x. to make her way home to sydney. faa investigators should be arriving within the half hour to try to find out what exactly went wrong with that engine. this plane had a total of fewer engines but the pilot obviously made the decision to turn around, seeing how it is a 14 1/2 hour flight to sydney. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. the faa is investigating another overnight air emergency involving a flight out of a major california airport. this one was in los angeles.

anan alaska airlines flight returned to l.a.x. after the pilot reported a bird hit the jet. the flight had just taken off for vancouver. into one was hurt. there was apparently -- no one was hurt. there was apparently no major damage to the jet. police are out there searching for a man this morning after his father was found dead in his home in her hercules. kraig debro has the latest on the investigation. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. just a dpum of -- couple of seconds ago, i talked to a neighbor. people are getting up and getting ready to go to work. neighbors say on saturday, the day the body was found, police had people outside and handcuffed. not sure if that's a person of interest or a witness. you can see a lot of police tape is still up. before daub, the lights were on inside the house. police clearly not done. both the victim and the missing

man lived in this home. and this morning, the county coroner could be finishing an autopsy and possibly releasing the cause of death in the homicide. police say the victim's son, 35- year-old frederick salas is not a person of interest in his father's homicide. a woman reported the man missing on saturday. police say the son could help in the investigation. >> we definitely would like to locate of him. it is of concern. he's reported missing with his father. so we would definitely like to locate him. >> reporter: a couple of hours following the missing person's report police found the body of the older salas inside the hole. they didn't say if there were signs of forced entry but police say there did appear to be a physical confrontation in the hole. neighbors say this has sent a chill in the air. >> the people living there are

easy going people. it's concerning. >> reporter: the victim is ricardo salas. a man who didn't want to be identified said he thought only the younger salaa lived here with his girlfriend and right now it's not clear if that woman is the same woman who reported both men missing on saturday. we got a call in to police to see if we can get an update. nothing so far on whether or not they have a suspect finally in this case or if they've caught up with the missing man, the san of the -- the son of the homicide victim. 7:35. a vallejo police sketch has been released now of a man who may be connected to a deadly shooting. the man is described by police as a person of interest in last tuesday's killing. 39-year-old corey dunn. the person of interest is african-american, between 30 and 40 years old, between 5'9" and 6 feet tall and weighs

about 200 pounds. police say he may be in a black full-sized van like the one you see her. it has a tan or light-colored horizontal stripe around the body of the van and a very loud exhaust. if you have any information, contact vallejo police. 7:35. negotiations between allied waste and garbage collectors in san mateo county are set to resume today. in the meantime we've learned last week's strike has been expensive for allied waste. trash collection for 36,000 residential customers was pushed back two days after 250 employees walked off the job. to catch up, workers made rounds this past weekend and were paid overtime. an allied waste spokesman said they receive time and a half pay for saturday and double time on sunday. we have information on last weekend's sewage spill in redwood city. officials now say 48,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled

into redwood shores la boon when an -- lagoon when an underground pipe ruptured. the new tests the lagoon still has high levels of e. coli. people are being advised to stay away from the water. the only fire station in the marin headlands may be closed soon to save some money. frills are considering -- officials are considering station 42. the area is -- areas is service are -- now, an efficiency study -- federal officials are negotiating negotiating with the southern marin fire district about providing that service. in san francisco, the clock is ticking on the jobs now

program. about 122 workers help keep the city parks clean. but that funding runs out at the end of next month. that could put those workers in hundreds -- and hundreds more back in the unemployment line. mayor new some and his staff are pushing for a funding extension. we want to check in with sal castanedo keeping a close eye on a number of place out there -- places out there, including the bay bridge toll plaza. tori, you are absolutely correct. dave, you're creecket even though you didn't say anything. westbound bay bridge is doing anything. we got some good twitters. some delays, southbound train 312 late. about five minutes. we keep track of b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. says they are on time and no major delays on muni yet.

fog. yesterday, we had a couple of upper 30s yesterday in the russian river. a lot of 40s. today it's in the mid-50s to mid-60s. san francisco's 55. we'll go 67 today. temperatures are coming up a little bit especially inland. santa rosa, 80 yesterday. yes, santa rosa did hit 80 yesterday. 85 today. walnut creek from 70. we'll go 84. and san jose a little cool there yesterday. 74, but we'll go 80 today. 61, mount tam which is 12 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. that's a huge jump and the overnight lows instead of being 44 in sonoma. it's 54. north napa was 54. 44 yesterday. they are now 56. those are big jumps. once that fog burns off we're already 10 degrees ahead of where we were. 32 in tahoe. 28 in truckee. a chill up there in the mountains. 53 ukiah. they were 48 yesterday.

the governor is coming to the bay area to talk about the budget. it's part of the tour of california so the governor can give his perspective on the budget impasse to various cities. in sacramento, today marks the official end of the state ledge lative year -- legislative year. lawmakers have scheduled votes on two competing proposals but neither is expected to pass. the governor has threatened to call legislatures back to sacramento for a special session to continue work on the budget. foothill deanza community college district say they expect to end this school year

with just enough money to prevent layoffs as long as there are no major sur -- surprises. the district already cut $10 million including more than 34 full-time and 39 classified hourly positions. officials say they hope to bring in additional $7 million a year by passing a $69 annual parcel tax in the november election. 7:45. more than 44,000 kaiser permanente employees are getting ready to vote on whether to stay with their current union or join a new one. kaiser employees have from september 13th until octoberth to cast mail-in ballots. their current union is one of the most powerful in the country and represents more than 2 million members all over the nation. the new union represents 6,000 and gaining the kaiser employees could be considered a huge victory. 7:46. the school day is now three

hours longer for hundreds of students at two oakland middle schools. this year students at the united for success academy and the elmhurst community prep school are going to school from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. district officials hope it will improve test scores. a nonprofit group is providing the extra hours of instruction which costs about $2400 per student. the federal government will cover the majority of the costs. 7:47. well, federal health officials are promising they are gonna inspect all 600 egg production facilities covered by new rules by the end of next year. that announcement follows fda informations of nine iowa farms connected to that recent salmonella outbreak that led to a half billion eggs being recalled. investigators say they found

rodents, -- rodents, piles of manure, several flies. they say that puts in place new federal rules for egg production. for more information on the egg recall, go to ktvu.com. just click on the egg recall tab. it's right near the top of the page. 7:47. it's a controversial issue. the effective immigration on the united states. now a new study by the san francisco federal reserve bank suggests our economy benefits from immigrant workers. researchers say they have expanded productive and boost incomes. the study found little evidence that immigrant workers displaced workers born in the u.s -- born in the u.s. police in concord want your help to try to identify victims that -- items that may be stolen. take a look at these brass fixtures. they were recovered at a local

recycling center. some of them are stamped with the ford brand. police say they appear to be new. if you recognize these parts get in contact with concord police. police are trying to figure out who mailed a wallet stolen from a crime victim four years ago. someone mailed this individual's black wallet to his mother's house in orinda along with a note that said the person had found the wallet in berkeley. his wallet was stolen when he was attacked. in fact, he was stabbed more than 25 times back in 2006. he did survive, though, but suffered severe injuries. two suspects were arrested. prosecutors say if they can figure out who sent that wallet it may help them with their case. 7:49. authorities in california central valley are investigating a horrific case of domestic violence tied to facebook. they say a hanford man tortured

tara moriarty is live at sfo where the faa is to arrive shortly. >> reporter: they are trying to figure out what happened this to engine on quantas flight 74 bound for australia last night. now. these were some very tense moments for the people on board. 231 people in total. they felt a strong shudder and heard a thud, we are told. some say they saw sparks and flames shooting out one of the engines. this is the engine that blew out and all that's left is a huge gash in the side. the pilot got on the intercom shortly before midnight, made the announcement they were returning back to san francisco as a safety precaution. now, the emergency landing was made at 12:45 this morning. joining me live is mcdonald's karen -- is mike mckaren, a

the u.s. pam cook is in the newsroom with more on the new information we've just learned. good morning. >> good morning. and more information continues to come in. this is what we know so far, the fbi is investigating to investigate the case but a u.s. government official is now saying that it is unlikely that the two men detained in amsterdam were planning or testing a terrorist attack. red flags were raised when the two men boarded a plane from chicago to amsterdam, their luggage headed to a different location contained what homeland security calls suspicious items. the u.s. officials said both men missed their flight from dulles to chicago. so united airlines booked them on a flight to amsterdam but their luggage didn't make the flight. and that's what twig -- triggered concern. one of the men started in

alabama, the other in detroit. both ended up in chicago. one man was reportedly to travel outside of washington, d.c. and go to yemen. both men missed their flights and were on the flight for amsterdam. one of the bags did go on to the dulles airport. one other thing that caused concern were the items found in the men's luggage which included a cell phone taped a medicine bottle. we're now getting word those items were purchased for friends of one of the travelers back in yemen. they were apparently taped together to keep track of what each friend requested. information is still coming in. there is a u.s. government official, remains anonymous. says that the investigation continues. but they do not believe this was a planned terrorist attack. we'll continue to update this story as soon as we get more information. let's go back to tori. >> thank you, pam. five minutes after 8:00. we're following a major new development in a mysterious

case concerning the cause of death and how many people lived inside the home. and that's important because it could increase the number of people of interest and/or suspects in this case. now, right now, there are no suspects, just people of interest. but law enforcement are working on that right now. now, according to a law enforcement source, the 73-year- old homicide victim had at least one gunshot wound in his body when they found him on saturday afternoon. that doesn't necessarily mean ricardo salas died as a result of a gunshot. the coroner is conducting an autopsy to determine that. he was found inside a home on myrtle drive on saturday, around 5:00 in the afternoon. >> we do have persons of interest that we are trying to

resume tau. in the meantime we've learned last week's strike has been very expensive for allied waste. trash collection for 36,000 residential customers was paushed -- was pushed back after 250 employees walked off the job. in order to catch up the workers made rounds over this weekend and they were paid overtime. an allied waste spokesperson said workers received time and a half for saturday and double pay for sunday. snee we also have new information on last week's sewage spill in read wood city. it turns out it was a lot bigger than first thought. they say 38,000 gallons of raw sewage leaked when an underground pipe broke last wednesday. new tests show the lagoon there still has high levels of e. coli. residents are advised to stay away from the water. 8:37. the only fire station in the marin head rands -- headlands may be closed to save money. officials at the golden gate

national recreation area are considering closing station 52. an area serviced by that station include bodega beach, and a survey showed service for the headlands and baker would save about $750,000 a year. federal officials are negotiating with the southern marin fire protection district to provide that service. in san francisco, the clock is sticking -- ticking on the jobs now program which is paid for by federal stimulus funding. about 122 workers helped keep city parks even -- clean. that funding pies their paychecks. it runs out at the end of next month and that could put those workers and hundreds of others back in the unemployment line. according to officials, there's push for this. according to aaa monterey is the number one destination for those traveling by car this weekend. and for the bay area folks who plan to get away by plane, they say san diego is the top destination. all right. 8:39. we want to check in with sal. some delays on b.a.r.t.? >> yeah, they had to take one, maybe two, but we know for sure, from hayward to san francisco and richmond, there are 15-minute delays and those delays could filter into the arrest of the system -- into

wi sh's learning more about what led up to an overnight -- we're learning more about what led up to an overnight emergency. a quantas flight took off from sfo and was over the engine when one of its engines exploded. tara moriarty is at the airport with an update on the investigation and what's happening to all of those passengers. >> reporter: one of the four engines blew out aboard this plane. so the pilot made the decision to turn around above the

pacific ocean and head back to san francisco. now, airport officials here at sfo tell me that was certainly the right call to make because we're talking about a 15-hour flight to australia and if something happened to another engine, that could have spelled disaster. the flight left last night around 11:00 and within a half hour, the 200-plus passengers felt a strong shudder. they say they felt short of a swerve and heard a loud noise. some said they could see sparks shooting out of the engine. you could see the huge gash there coming out of the metal. around 12:45 in the morning. the captain made an emergency landing out of sfo. and faa investigators will try to figure out what went wrong. >> there's anything from blades cracking, wear and tear. they will hook at maintenance records to see if the aircraft was maintained properly. until we can see what caused the engine to fail, there is a

combat operations in iraq today. this morning the president will personally thank troops during a visit to an army base and then tonight he will address the entire nation. and this morning, governor schwarzenegger comes right here to the bay area. he will address the san francisco chamber of commerce about the california budget crisis. today in san francisco lawmakers will be voting on two budget proposals but neither one is inspected to pass. the debate on capitol hill whether to do tax cuts for the wealthy is becoming controversy. barbara boxer says to continue tax cuts for all but the wealthiest of americans. that defines exiles who make more than $250,000 a year or individuals who make more than 200,000. but carly fiorina is against

this barbara boxer and carly fee or renonwill -- fiorina will face-off tomorrow. you can watch it live only on ktvu channel 2. 8:48. there is a new government reform on home prices t slows a slight increase but the experts don't expect that to continue. the stan poord and poors -- standard & poor's posted a 1% increase in june. those gains were weaker than in previous months, including those in san francisco, leaks and san diego. the experts attribute the gains to federal tax credits which have now expired. they say home prices will probably fall again for the rest of the year. san francisco-based yelp is launching a new program today

a waferning for parents in wall -- a warning for parents in walnut creek. we just got off the phone with school officials who confirmed a strange man approached a student at buena vista elementary school. the incident happened on friday at 5:00 as the girl was heading home from an after-school program. she was not harmed and ran home and told her parents. the man is described as caucasian, 55 years old with blond hair, he drove a white convertible. police are urging students to walk in groups. well, for hundreds of students at two oakland middle schools, the school day is longer. classes will start at 8:00 a.m.
