good afternoon, we are rife here in vallejo where the body of two women were discovered overnight. coming we will tell you how they could be connected with three other deaths and why the atf is on the scene. >> in hercules police believe one person is responsible for up to five deaths, they now say they have the motive in at least two of those. >> good afternoon, i am jade hernandez. it is the only televised debate between senator barbara boxer and her opponent carly fiorina, a live report coming up.

>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> good afternoon. we begin with several new developments in a bizarre killing spree across three bay area cities. at this point five people are confirmed dead, including the suspect, who was killed by police after a high speed chase last night. two women reported missing a week ago have also turned up dead. the son of an elderly victim, found dead several days ago, is still missing. there are several locations involved in this case, in hercules, richmond and vallejo, the atf is investigating a house full of potentially explosive chemicals that lead to the evacuation of neighbors this morning. we have team coverage on this complex and developing story. kraig debro will have more on the suspect but we begin with

claudine wong. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori, yes, members of the atf or still out here and they could be out here for quite a while. they are actually in the backyard of this home behind me trying to deal with explosive chemicals found inside. those chemicals found after the bodies of two women were discovered here. the police investigation into their deaths is underway but this is just the beginning of this complex case with multiple victims, crime scenes and so many questions. this is where 63-year-old deana allen lived with her husband. she went missing last wednesday along with her friend carol smart. police say allen's husband, 73- year-old charles rite inhouse, filed a missing person's report on sunday. neighbors say they were told by police to call them as soon as they spotted him. the neighbor made that call around midnight when he came home. >> i guess i was instructed to.

they were looking for somebody, said if you see -- if you see anyone here, call the police. i say midnight. okay. >> the detectives came out to follow up on the missing persons, came out to get more information from the husband. when they were inside the residence they saw suspicious stuff that based on their experience led them to discover the bodies. >> the bodies were severely decomposed. one police officer on the scene described the situation as grizzly. one woman found inside the home. the other outside. >> ait peers the bodies had been here for several days. >> the discovery didn't end with the bodies. from above you can see boxes containing what has been described as explosive making chemicals. those were taken out of the home for safety reasons. >> all i can tell you is there are several items that were located that are chemicals to manufacture explosives. >> 20 pounds of similar

chemicals were found at this storage facility also corrected to him. this case gets even stranger. police say police called them about last friday's killing of an elderly man and that is when they realized they might be connected. >> his name came up in both. >> they have had contact with him for nonviolent issues. he stayed at this home off and on but was here often enough neighbors knew his face. >> he has been throughout the neighborhood for quite some time now. drove the white corvette, kind of hot rodded around the neighborhood some but i never thought that he was that kind of, you know, that he would do something like that. >> so here is where things stand now. charles rite inhouse, the husband of one of the missing women who lived here is in custody. he is going to face charges at least for having the chemicals. it is unclear if he faces charges in connection with the death of these two women.

the atf trying to clear the scene so crime scene technicians can get in and do their job. the focus is on the man connected with all of this. kraig debro has been looking into -- [ inaudible ] >> -- joins us now with more on that. kraig. >> reporter: thanks, claudine. well, police have absolutely connected the suspect to two victims here in hercules, one a 73-year-old bludgeoned to death, another a woman in her 20s was strangled to death and had trauma about the head. two victims -- two more victims identified in vallejo early this morning. now police say the one missing person is still outstanding, police say they like to be optimistic but given what this man has done in the past they say they are not holding out hope of finding him alive. >> we always like to be optimistic in this particular case but being an jane tans of mr. balance deer mere 0 does not bode well for having a long

life, so -- >> reporter: the suspect's life is also over, he died in a hail of police gunfire inside a 99 ranch market store in richmond around 8:45 last night. >> the suspect did have a large knife and when officers gave commands for him to drop that knife he lunged at officers and in which they were in fear for their lives, they discharged their firearm and which the suspect was struck and suffered fatal injuries. >> reporter: but not after leading police on a chase. police in vallejo say he had kidnapped his girlfriend earlier in the day from there and then strangled her before getting on to the freeway. >> it does not appear she was shot by officers. she was deceased before arriving at the -- at the end of the pursuit. >> reporter: police say the motive may have been gel osi. she lived at this home with three other men. >> suffice to say one women, three men living at the house

and he got in an altercation with a couple of them and he didn't live there, so -- >> the 73-year-old man is dead. police found him here after he was reported missing. police are still looking for his son. he hasn't been seen in nearly a week. it all started back on august 22nd when police were called to the hercules home because of a fight between bald da mere a and the salass. >> there was no allegation by either rid cardio or frederick they were attacked or assaulted by mr. bald da morrow but he did discharge them with assaulting him. >> reporter: we found out the suspect's death was captured on tape. it was not released from his but we did get this videotape. it is hard to make out his car but you can certainly see the police cars following. following the shooting the police squad came out and searched his car. police say it belonged to his girlfriend. they believed it might have

that wrist jade hernandez joins us now with a preview. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. inside the theater tonight senator barbara boxer will face off with her republican opponent carly fiorina. now some students say they expect to hear the issues but there are some things they don't want to hear. >> i really don't want to see an attack on the person so much. i really want to see them address the issues. as much as i would love to hear you know information concerning each other, it is really about the issues and for them to go after each other would be a major negative. >> reporter: this debate is expected to be lively. these two women could not be more different, taking opposing views on almost every issue, including the economy. >> the one bright spot we have had here in this recession has been clean energy jobs. 10,000 new businesses, 125,000 new jobs, why on earth would we turn our back on that? >> barbara boxer will lose in november because the people of california are going to hold her accountable for a track

record of failure. failure to represent their interests, failure to deliver results on their behalf. >> reporter: the first and only scheduled debate so far will be held here tonight at st. mary's college. some experts are predicting firey exchanges, others think candidates should maintain civility since this debate is only one way voters can elevate them. >> today with the social networking sites we are just in that transition where another kind of politics is going to take place. the most powerful politicians use the most powerful means of communication. >> reporter: campus republicans and democrats sounded off on their candidate's positions. >> she is definitely going to hit hard the role of government and how she is going to handle the economic issues in california. definitely with not increasing taxes and also by trying to reduce the deficit. >> being a part of the california young democrats, i think that boxer has done what

charged with a crime. [ inaudible ] [overlapping speakers] >> -- key arrests in several shootings. that includes the attempted murder of a fremont police officer last friday. chief anthony batts said they arrested suspected shooter andrew bar reins to within 24 hours as well as an ocom plus who tried to help him cross the border into mexico. >> anyone who came in contact with barrientos we are charging them with a crime. anyone who assisted them. anyone who housed them. anyone who tried to take care of him. we will prosecute them to the fullest. i want to make sure that that message gets out pretty loud and clear. >> barrientos surrendered just a few feet from the border in san diego. authorities say he shot officer todd young during the serving of an arrest warrant. young and another officer were dressed in plain clothes. it is back to square one for state lawmakers and the governor because there is still no new budget after state lawmakers voted down two

proposals on the last day. democrats voted against the republican budget plan. and republicans voted against the democrat's proposal. legislative leaders from both sides along with governor schwarzenegger will now return to negotiations to try and work out a compromise budget that will pass with the required 2/3 support. at the end of the session lawmakers defeated the bill to ban plastic bags in california, the nation's first statewide ban. supporters of the bill said 19 billion bags used by californians every year hurt the environment but opponents said it would prove too costly. a bill headed to governor schwarzenegger's desk would gley the start of kindergarten for children entering california's public kindergartens, they passed the will yesterday to require children to be five years old bicep beer first of the school

fairfield north 9, vac a will northwest san jose, north- northeast in the city, a puff of a south wind there at santa rosa. this morning it was very interesting, sfo, cordelia, napa and fairfield reported calm conditions. you can see the areas in the 80s in the orange starting to work their way back towards the west, 70s. 82 in san francisco officially. it is about 68 to 70 in ocean beach. no fog. down in southern california. you probably heard we have a spare the air day today and tomorrow as well. we have an inversion forming. at the surface temperatures start to cool down and you hit a warm air pocket that is your inversion that traps the pollutants that is again a spare the air today and also again tomorrow. they already issued that. temperatures right now they are -- they are getting warmth. santa rosa 86, 88 fairfield. 82 in san francisco. the average high this time of year is 70 so we are already

above. san rafael at 86. now that oakland 78 is at the airport, about 80 downtown. livermore is almost 90 degrees already and san jose 84, which is right where you should be on the high side yet you are already there. fog out to the south and out to sea. it will be back in 48 hours. wall to wallace we say, 70s, 80s and also 90s. some of you who work the evening shift for the rest want shift and you get up at 11:00 in the morning and you are just reading out right now and i have met you. [ music ] >> in silver springs, player land they are negotiating this hoyer with a gunman holding hostages inside the headquarters of the discovery channel. they have oiled him as james jay lee. they say he has a history of protesting the programs on the discovery channel and has expressed concerns about the environment, population and the future of the planet. officers evacuated people from the building including children from a day care center. there are no reports of injuries. firefighters rescued a dog from a burning home in hayward this morning. fire officials say a resident of the two story home on jacobs place near bay view avenue heard popping noise about 6:00 a.m. the resident went outside and found the grablg and a car on fire.
