dead. these are live pictures now from news chopper 2 which is flying over an active crime scene in a business park in hercules. police right now are searching an area where a vehicle linked to this case was found earlier today. we have not been able to confirm what investigators are looking for. but one person considered to be a victim is still missing and police are expressing concern about his safety. last night, the officers shot and killed this man who they say is the prime suspect. it is 38-year-old efren valdemoro. he tried to evade capture by running into a market in richmond where he was shot and killed. just outside that market, police discovered the body of his girlfriend inside his car. investigators also believe that efren valdemoro is responsible for the deadly beating of an elderly man in hercules last saturday. that man's son who lived with him is the one who is still

missing. he is linked to the death of two women whose bodies were discovered late yesterday inside a home in vallejo. today police arrested the husband of one of those women. our live team coverage of this complex story begins outside the police headquarters. >> reporter: frank, seconders from three different police departments are all meeting to go over this very complex and horrific case. police say that efren valdemoro's girlfriend, 46-year- old cindy tran owned a home on -- late this afternoon, investigators confirmed that it was tran's body they found in the car that efren valdemoro was driving when authorities shot him to death -- just before authorities shot him to death. >> we know she was kidnapped in vallejo, other than that, we are not sure she was a resident of hercules. >> when was she kidnapped.

>> it appeared it was sometime tuesday evening maybe between the 5:00 and 7:00 hour at summer point. >> tran's son told us today that efren valdemoro treated his mother well and never expected he would do something like this. now, tran lives at the home where she rented rooms to two men. one was found beat than to death and one is missing. they are thinking efren valdemoro may have been jealous. >> there was a dispute that involved the victim and the son and the suspect. the dispute was over a concern by the suspect that there may have been something going on between them. >> police say efren valdemoro in the death of two women in this house in vallejo but aren't sure of the motive. now, efren valdemoro has an

expired security guard licensed but apparently unemployed. so far there are four victims and authorities say they fear frederick is in danger of being the 5th. residents in the vallejo neighborhood where two of those victims were found were stunned to learn about the discovery not only of bodies but the explosives of homes where one of those victims lived. >> scary. i'm shaken by the whole thing. >> it's crazy that you see that happening in your own neighborhood, which has been a quiet neighborhood since i've been here, and then you find chemicals and dead people around the corner, it's pretty wild. >> some neighbors also told us suspect killer efren valdemoro would sometimes display strange behavior outside the home late at night. but they say they never believed he was violent. as we mentioned, vallejo police today arrested the husband of one of the two women found dead

in vallejo. 72-year-old charles -- was arrested on an explosive charge and being questioned on the women's death. we are in vallejo with more on that part of the story. >> reporter: did he know there were bodies inside of his house? that is one of many questions detectives are trying to answer tonight. behind me this is the crime scene. at this hour it does remain secure. this is his home where police say two women were found dead and in another twist it's the same house neighbors tell us efren valdemoro once lived: police say these two go friends were reported missing by their husbands. vallejo pd says -- went to the police station sunday to file a report, looking to follow up, the detectives arrived at his home late last night. he led them inside and moments later, two decomposed female bodies were found, one in the bank yard and one inside the home.

>> he's not reacting in a normal way when advised there were bodies in the residence. >> residents had to be evacuated for a short time after a large amount of chemicals were located on-site. investigators were sifting through evidence this afternoon. >> the items that were located appear to be chemicals that are consistent with precursors to manufacture explosives. >> neighbors say the 72-year- old was quiet and kept to himself. >> the old guy, he just seemed normal. >> but neighbor patrick nicholas says another man also lived off and on with him and his wife carroll. his name, efren valdemoro. >> he was always weird. that's why i was staying away from him action ---- kind of. but i never really thought of him killing anyone. it's shocking but also i think that he's capable of that. >> reporter: vallejo police say the 72-year-old is a chemical

we have live team coverage both inside and outside the auditorium on the campus of saint march -- saint mary's college. >> reporter: well as you said, in less than one hour, senator boxer and fiorina will take to this stage at saint mary's college for their debate. the only scheduled debate so far prior to the november election. now the stage layout should look familiar. you can see some people doing some last minute touches. it should look familiar. podiums, moderator as you mentioned. the questions will be asked by three journal itself sitting at this table. now, in addition the debate organizers which includes us, have -- voters that will be presented to the candidates live on at the same time. now, the campaigns have negotiated dozens of rules. here are a few notes on the

it may be the end of the line for a police force in san francisco. police officers are basically hired peace officers but resently they have been stirring a lot of controversy. we are in san francisco where the police commission is meeting tonight, david. >> reporter: julie the patrol program dates back to the gold rush days. tonight city officials are calling for it to end. john is one of 31 arm patrol special police officers trained in part by the san francisco police department but hired by private clients. they isn't supposed to cost taxpayers. but a new controllers office report says administering the program actually costs 30 3,000 dollars annually. it says patrol specialists are too often mistaken for sworn officers. >> the city has been trying to enforce on that subject and make them wear a uniform that

goes past september. a lawsuit has been filed to try to force the attorney general to defend proposition 8's ban on same sex marriage in court. they say california's government code did he clears the attorney general and governor shall defend the state against all legal challenges. a federal judge overturned prop. 8 says it was unconstitutional. >> he's not just the private citizen, he's the attorney general. it's his responsibility to defend the laws, all of the laws under the provision of the state constitution whether he likes it or not. >> the attorney general's spokeswoman says he believes he can't be forced to appeal a decision he agrees with. the board met this afternoon to hear details of a proposal to reduce service on all lines, cut weekend service in half, and trim overnight service by two-thirds. earlier this summer, ac transit

tried to impose a labor contract on union drivers in order to safe money but a judge deemed that move illegal. the board is expected to vote on the service cuts on september 22nd. firefighters are mopping upright now after a grass fire threatened homes on the eastern side of american canyon and vallejo this afternoon. the 30--acre fire began just after 3:00 p.m. strong winds pushed the fire away from subdivisions on the line between the two cities. firefighters say if the winds had shifted the fire could have quickly engulfed homes in both places. they will remain on the scene overnight to watch for any hotspots. you can see from those pictures there the flames were lit i just -- literally just a couple of feet from those homes. conditions today without a lot of wind were helpful for firefighters as we move into the next couple of days, temperatures trend down a little bit and that's good news. if you are concerned about fire

city hall today. police are investigating the killing of a man who was shot to death after he answered his doorbell. the shooting took place shortly before 10:00 last night. investigators say the gunman range the bell and then shot the man as he stood in the doorway. the man's wife was struck in the elbow by a bullet. police have not made any arrests in this case and have not released the victim's identity. a bill that would have made it a crime to openly carry a loaded weapon in california died. -- as long as it is not loaded and is in a holster or a case. the senate approved the bill which would have made is a misdemeanor. but the assembly rejected in a -- the bill was written and response tory sent carry demonstrations across the

connected to the killing. new developments involving a search at a hercules business park. it's where a vehicle was reportedly found earlier today that is tied to one of the victims in this bizarre case. we are joined now in hercules with the latest on that search. >> reporter: in the last two minutes, we talked with police here and got an update. i want 0 to show you where we are. as we zoom in, they have blocked off this street, this is the closest we can get. you can see where they had sevenners out here, rescue crewsenned a tents. news chopper 2 is overhead. this is where this white cadillac was found earlier today. this could be key evidence in this case. searchers have been around this area all afternoon trying to determine if there is more than just the vehicle out here. we have video that we took in just the last 15 minutes, it

shows that white cadillac being captured or being put rather on to a flatbed truck and again this could be key evidence in this case. this truck, the cadillac belonged to rita allen. she is one of the women who was found dead in her home in vallejo. it's a very complicated case but we want to try to break it down for you. to give you an idea of where it was found, it was just about a half a mile away from the initial crime scene in hercules. now that home is where 73-year- old -- was found dead. his son, a 35-year-old is considered missing. still missing at this hour. we did just talk to hercules police and they say at this point they have not found the 35-year-old, they are just wrapping up this search here. they just removed that vehicle. they say at this point, they did not find anything here linking it to the younger son. they say the vehicle was in good season and it appears to have driven here but this is a

we are less than ten minutes a way now from the debate between boxer and fiorina. this is the only scheduled debate between the two cap datz for senate. -- candidates for senate. let's start outside with our reporter. >> reporter: well let me tell you, the debates are already beginning out here. we have members of the california nurses association who have come out in support of barbara boxer as well as people with the seiu then we also have for in a supporters and --

fiorina supporters and members of the tea party out here. they have been going face to face for the past hour and a half or so. and then across the street, you can see they have security members who have been here trying to keep order. it has gotten bigger. i've counted up to about 100 people who are out here right now at the entrance to where the debate is. now across the street over there, i want to tell you, one of the other candidates who are on the ballot in november for the peace and freedom party, they have brought signs out with their candidates protesting that they were not allowed into the debate because it is just between fiorina and boxer. we also understand that you can see there are people over there with the red jackets, those are security guards that have been brought in by campus police just to try and keep order out here, these people say they will be out here until this debate ends and it could get pretty heated outside as well

as inside. reporting live. we're going to send it to ken, who i understand is inside the debate area. what do you see there? that's right. we are inside sainmary's college theatre. if the audience pays attention, we should have a wrapped crowd watching very closely everything that the senator and the challenger have to say tonight. there are 400 seats here and they are all full. the candidates arrived within the hour, senator barbara boxer seeking her fourth term as senator facing antiincumbent mood across the country, this could be one of her toughest challenges of her career. fiorina coming in as the republican candidate, former ceo of -- that gives her a better understanding of the businesses world and that could help change california's economy. we are just a few minutes away from the start of this debate.
