the scene all day and he joins us now live with the latest, robert. >> reporter: julie, it is a grim scene here at the redwood shores lagoon. about an hour ago, the transportation safety board took over the operation, so the rescue mission by the sheriff's department and coast guard is over. one body was recovered but the body believed to be of bob borman and two passengers are still under water. the beach craft twin engine plane with a pilot and two passengers took off from san carlos airport just after noon. many people who work around the lagoon heard the plane nose dive into the water. >> it banked straight up into the air and i jumped up of the of my desk and said, plane crash. call 911. it sounded like it had a hard time accelerating.

then i looked up and heard a big boom. the plane just went down, so i ran to the lake. >> reporter: a lot of people tried to get to the scene including who men in a kayak, some swimmers. but the coast guard sent them away because of the leaking oil. >> i can tell you she was found a couple of feet from the plane. she was not seat belted into the interior. >> reporter: as we reported earlier, officials are not confirming the identities of the victim, but we've been told one passenger is bob borman, the foreman of borman company. again the ntsb is now in charge and have not yesterday said when it will try to retrieve the wreckage and the bodies. live in redwood city, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the man who police say shot an understand cover freemont police officer is back in the

bay area today. the alameda county sheriff's released this booking photo of barrientos. barrientos faces 10 charges for shooting officer young while he was trying to arrest him. san san francisco police officers donated blood in honor of that shot police officer. officials say officer todd young was shot twice in the pelvis, he has undergone surgery and remains in serious condition. police today named a second suspect in the deaths of two women who's decomposed bodies were found inside a vallejo home tuesday night. this as officers uncover more evidence and try to unravel the

murder of two people. allie rasmus has the story. >> reporter: the coroner conducted autopsies on the two women who were found in this home earlier this week. today we learned a little bit more on the man who lived in this home with one of those women and police say he is the suspect in the two women's deaths. police say writtenhouse is the suspect in his wife's murder and her friend. >> we have to continue working on it and hopefully we can come with the answers. >> reporter: alan lived in this home with her husband. police came to the home and found a shallow grave where a woman was buried. police also found another woman's body inside the home.

police say writtenhouse did not act, quote, normally when they asked him about the bodies. and the bodies was not the only thing they found in the home. >> they found a chemical labeled uranium. he is being questioned about that. >> reporter: this is a picture of the company's building from google earth, it's in fairfield. the company makes ejection seats for u.s. military airplanes. a company spokesperson says they do not think the materials writtenhouse had stored came from their company. the other homicide victim carol smart also lived in vallejo. friends and family declined to speak to us but a neighbor remembered the 60-year-old woman as a friendly, happy person. >> she would be out there and show would make sure she waved and said, hi how are you doing. >> reporter: this man 38-year- old efren valdemoro is also a

suspect in the killings. he is believed to be responsible for the death of at least two other people. but here's the connection, because valdemoro lived in writtenhouse's home, they believe valdemoro may be connected to the deaths of the two women here. we have complete coverage of the efren valdenmore case and the details investigators are trying to piece together. the council is considering entering an agreement with the san mateo office. it would change police officers to positions at the sheriff's

jimon clark. christien kafton attended the teen's funeral. >> reporter: today his family and friends said their final goodbyes and police are looking for his killer. jimon clark's family members said their final goodbyes today to the 13-year-old everyone remembered as funny and easy going. his sister wrote a poem that she wrote in his honor. >> i will never forget the day you died, as i stood by the place, tears filled my eyes. >> reporter: investigators have made this case a a priority. they are looking for the right tip to crack their case. >> the community really needs to come forward with any information they may have. even if they believe the information is not pertinent to

california without a state budget. governor arnold schwarzenegger hopes that lawmakers will use some variation of his plan in his budget proposal. the plan includes personal and corporate income taxes and changing the sales tax structure. severe cuts may be on the way for the east bay's largest butt transit agency. ac transit says a budget shortfall could cause it to cut some services to half. rob roth reports. >> reporter: cuts could be coming to ac transit and soon. serious cuts, ac transit officials are considering eliminating the night owl service, that would mean no buses between midnight and 5:00 in the morning. >> you can't depend on the transit agency anymore and that's really sad. >> reporter: they are also looking at a proposal that would limit the evening services. >> i work mainly nights and

weekend, to have them cut the weekends when i'm just trying to make the move and they've raised the bridge toll, it's just ridiculous. >> reporter: ac transit has just raised fares. >> we were forced to return to the spending level that is now causing us to spend $300,000 per week over what we had budgeted so we're just getting further and further in the hole. we don't print the money. >> the union did not do a, b, c, d so guess what public, we're going to take your service away on nights and weekend. so, to me it seems like, executive vandalism. >> reporter: the bus drivers union and the transit agency have entered into binding arbitration in attempt to hammer out a new contract.

union leaders, and community leaders gathered to fight for public transportation. protesters are demanding that some funds set aside for federal highway projects be transferred to public transportation. if approved, the cuts could go into effect december 19th. about a week before christmas. a new report out today shows jobless claims dropped for a second straight week. people reporting jobless claims dropped 6,000. continuing claims fell by 23,000 to just under 4.5 million. that is the lowest since late june. economists had expected a slight increase but say the lowest number suggesting the

slowest economy isn't prompting widespread job cuts. on wall street, the jobs report helped stocks move higher. the dow closed at 10,320, up a 50 points. and an oil rig explosion, find out what happened to the crew and if oil is now leaking into the water. we'll tell you why grape growers will need all the help they can get. the fog is back, we have big changes under way. those controversial smart meters, are they accurate and are they safe? the one area where audits found pg & e failed miserably.

livermore valley grapers will soon start crushing grapes, but first they must harvest the grapes. >> reporter: marked by an annual tradition -- the blessing of the grapes. >> it always comes through for us so we have a lot of faith here. >> reporter: jim ryan says a blessing is welcome after a difficult growing season which has impacted livermore growers and beyond. >> there's a concern about the late harvest, just because of the extreme cold summer we've had. >> reporter: chandler with the wine growers association says this year's harvest is delayed between two and three weeks, the harvest typically would be underway by now. >> with the blessing out of the way, growers now need help from

mother nature in the form of a dry november with a late harvest, fruit will remain on the vine longer which could bring damaging rains into play. >> as with most things with mother nature, it's on mother nature's schedule, not yours. >> reporter: growers in other are regions are reporting lower grapes which could threaten some growers. >> the biggest advantage we have here is people in this economy is trading down into our price points. >> reporter: he says the economy may help some growers in his region if the late harvest concludes as hoped. >> i'm depending heavily on the rabbi and the priest here to make that happen. >> reporter: in livermore, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. and the blessing of the grape also marks the start of

the wine celebration this labor day weekend, you will find more information on that on ktvu.com. just go to web links? a minor earthquake today rattled this morning. a magnitude 2.4 aftershock hit the same area about a half hour late every. bart stopped service briefly to make sure there wasn't any track damage. there are no reports of damage or injuries. the coast guard now says there is no sign of an oil leak after an oil rig explosion in the gulf of mexico today. the platform is about 100 miles off the louisiana coast. that's just west of the bp well that exploded back in april, it is owned by mariner energy. the rig exploded suddenly, all 13 crew members were rescued from the water and no one was injured. investigators are still working tonight to try to find out what

caused today's explosion. hurricane earl is bearing down on the coast but it is losing some strength tonight. at one point it was a category four. coastal residents from north carolina to new jersey are preparing for the worse. the hurricanes outer edge is bringing on and off rain and north carolina's outer banks are excted to get the brunt of the storm around midnight. back here in the bay area, another warm day and bill martin joins u now from the weather center with a peak ahead for the weekend forecast. >> big holiday, the fog is back on storm tracker 2. i've been talking to peak friends at the beaches. i just got threw talking to a friend at half-moon bay and he says the fog just came in in the half hour.

big changes for our friends at the coast. it has been warm all day. cooling begins coast side and inland. inland temperatures coming down between five to 8 degrees. instead of low 100s like we did see today, in places like livermore and antioch, we're looking at lows in the 80s and 90s. the fog is coming in, it's going to get hung up on the west side of the oakland hills. so albany, kesington. daytime high today in oakland, still 78 degrees. so certainly pretty mild for this time of year. but not as warm as we've been seeing with low 90s upper 80s. look who comes back for the week end. that is not a strong system but it's enough that it will trend our temperatures down, bring us a constant fog at the coast nights and mornings. pick up the southwest wind as well. so this is going to be -- it's not a deal breaker for the weekend. it's not going to be as hot as

it had been. tomorrow evening, the fog is arnold. just kind of stopping off the hills. it's right back to the coast but very little coastal clearing tomorrow. temperatures coast side are going to be mainly in the 50s and very low 60s. livermore not 101 but 94 tomorrow. so down a good 7 degrees. 88 in san jose, 92 in gilroy, foggy along the coast. pacifica, 65. this is up way from the water. down at the beach it's going to be in the 60s. a five day forecast that includes cooling, that fog came back. and to quote my friend at the beach, he says it's like a bomb came in. >> sure cools things down. a new study of the smart meters is out. the california public utilities
