manually piece by piece. >> reporter: volunteers are looking for any signs of a 53- year-old who's body may have been dumped. the trash from those dumpsters end up here, but it is difficult to know exactly where in the landfill the hercules trash ended up. they've been searching since friday, yesterday evening they found a piece of letterhead with a piece of the victim's address. >> it means they're in the right place. that we're looking at city of hercules trash. they've been searching for three days and that's the first piece of concrete evidence that they're in the right place. >> reporter: police believe that sales may have been a victim of valdemoro. valdemoro is also the suspect in the deaths of two women and

the death of ricardo sales senior. he is the father of the now missing fredrick sales. there are 20 volunteers who spent their entire holiday weekend doing the bulk of this very tedious search work here at the landfill. they are with the hercules response team. they plan to be back here tomorrow along with police investigators, and police say they could continue the sáurpblg out here at the landfill until wednesday. newark police are asking for the public's help in finding the suspect of a shooting. his body was found this morning in some bushes behind the w hotel on gateway boulevard. police say there were calls to that hotel last night to break up a large pool party involving up to 400 people. the officers say they heard several gunshots but didn't see

what happened. >> i can't confirm how the victim was killed. it's likely that with shots fired last night that that's an unlikelihood. vallejo police say they are looking for two armed robbers accused of stealing thousands of dollars from six flags discovery kingdom. investigators say just before 11:00 last night, two men cut a lock, climbed over a fence and then entered the amusement park. their faces were covered with hooded sweatshirts and bandanas. they robbed three employees who had been collected the park's receipts. the park was closed at the time. police are looking at surveillance video to get a better look at the suspects. and a man is in jail after being accused of stabbing his son more than a dozen time.

gary gomez was arrested early yesterday morning. deputies say he got upset after one of his son's friends said he had to go home. that prompted an argument between gomez and his 14-year- old son who was adamant that his son had to leave. the argument then turned into a fistfight. deputies say that's when the boy's father pulled out a knife and stabbed his son 11 times. gomez wife was also stabbed once. none of the wounds is life threatening. martinez police is remembering an officer who was killed in the line of duty. >> the flag in front of the martinez city hall was lowered to half staff today in honor of police sergeant paul starzy. his family and dozens of officers gathered in his memory >> today is a day of remembrance. it's a difficult time for the family and for the department.

because paul is and is and will continue to be part of our family here at martinez pd. sergeant starzy was a 12 year veteran of the force, he is survived by his wife and three children. a popular dog park is creating concern following reports of bad behavior such as fights, biting and scratching. foster city officials say it's not so much the dogs they are worried about, rather it's the dog owners. diana rossi has the live report. >> reporter: julie, people and their dogs are taking in the last minutes of labor day. but the city is getting concerned about the humans minding their manners, while the dogs act like dogs. >> reporter: the dogs settled this scrimmage with help from their owners, no hard feelings. a 59-year-old woman scratched and bit a 37-year-old man who tried to break up an argument

between her and another dog owner. >> there was a disagreement over words exchanged. a man intervened to separate the ladies that were involved. >> reporter: dog walker the trish dire says that human behavior as a sign of the times. >> there's been a lot of lay offs and people losing their jobs. i've seen a lot of people here at the dog park, they come here and they're stressed out. >> you separate them and you don't blame the owner. >> reporter: a sub committee will consider whether to put a cap on the number of people and dogs allowed in here at any

period of time. but some people say that'll be hard regulate. we have new information tonight about an oil spill in the petaluma river. the state department of fish and game now says an old tug boat leaked oil and fuel into the water. the spill created a sheen that stretches for about 2 miles. a clean up effort is now under way. officials say as much as 600- gallons of oil have spilled. an observant boom has been placed on both side of the sheen. it does not appear wildlife has been affected. we will have a live update on the spill on bay area news at 7:00 on tv 36. journalists are now allowed to bring cameras back into the state assembly. but there was not much to see today, even though the state budget is 68 days late. lawmakers have hit the road. last week assembly guards started enforcing a rule

banning reporters from filming on the assembly floor. the assembly speaker reversed the vote after complaints. a new study finds california and the nation remains stuck between a recession and a recovery. the report by the california budget project says the economic downturn has been especially hard on 16 to 24- year-olds and the long term unemployed. nearly 1 million californians have been out of work now for more than a half a year. the average californian who's been out of work has been looking for a job for eight months, we've never seen numbers like that before. the report says employers have also cut back on worker hours. making paychecks smaller. the race for california's top job entered a new phase on this labor day. as jerry brown officially moved his campaign into high gear.

and his republican challenger meg whitman also didn't waste any time taking her campaign to the ad waves. >> reporter: jerry brown took today, the unofficial end of summer to start his campaigning in earnest. >> with the eight weeks to go, we're going to put ads on the radio and television. we'll campaign throughout the state. i'm convinced that on november 2nd, people are going to pick a path that will unite people not divide them. >> he's a governor who cut waste. >> reporter: candidate for governor brown released his new

ad touting him as cutting waste. and meg whitman is continuing her on air campaign talking about her experience growing ebay from a small business to an internet sensation. labor day is the weekend when people come home, and start watching the governor race. >> is her 17 billion in tax breaks primarily for those people, is she really free to work for the ordinary californian? >> reporter: our political science expert says the key in this race, will be winning over the so called independents who may just now be plugging in to

the campaign season. we're live in oakland, christien kafton. oracle announced today herd will join its executive team. herd has been named president and placed on oracle's executive team. herd was released last month after being accused of sexual harassment. so far this weekend, dui arrests are up. according to the chp, officers statewide have arrested 1360 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and or drug. that is 98 compared to last year at this time during the labor day weekend. here in the bay area, 221 drivers have been arrested for dui since friday. there have also been 12 trfic related fatalities statewide. a not so happy meal.

in san francisco tomorrow, city leaders are expected to vote on a new tax. while restaurants and bars don't like it, customers say they are raising a glass in support. david stevenson reports. >> reporter: as labor day winds

down, city supervisors are gearing up to vote tomorrow on boosting the cost of boost. taxes aim to recoop $16,000 a year tied to alcohol abuse that are now paid for taxpayers. >> prevention services, for hospitalization of people who's lives are shattered by alcohol. >> reporter: bill sponsor says the bill will hit distributors, adding a nickel to a bottle of wine. >> it's very minimal. less than 1% consumption, about 50 jobs less a year. >> reporter: alcohol distributors and san francisco restaurants oppose the fees which they say will be paid for by customers and come at a difficult time in the recession. >> very soon, customers will

been made to keep homeless people from the restaurant. >> they scrape together what little pennys they have, if this is the only place they can afford to eat or if they want to eat here, that's what the hate is all about. >> reporter: the franchise owner says she's not targeting the homeless, she says she's just trying to make a little extra money. the state department of fish and game today offered a free day of fishing or a day of free fishing rather. there was no fishing license required today in places such as san pablo reservoir and the east bay were packed. the fee is normally $13 a day and a lot of people were pleasantly surprised. >> i was surprised when we came down and they said we didn't need licenses, my wife is going to come and join us. and what a great day to go out fishing today. it was absolutely beautiful. a nice end to a holiday

weekend. we just had some spectacular weather this weekend. >> temperatures warmed up nicely. lots of mid-90s. air quality wasn't as good as they had been, but temperatures are trending down again as we move into the next 24 hours. there is the fog, you can see it down around monterey right now, that fog is heading your way as we move into the late evening, early morning hours. so that's the big change. the fog comes back. temperatures drop, and major cooling is the buzz word here in the weather center. not just 5 degrees but as much as 15 degrees tomorrow. and then another 5 degrees on wednesday. and with this there's a slight chance for a sprinkle on tuesday, late night early wednesday morning. but, when i say sprinkle. mainly drizzle and a drop, drop, drop. shouldn't be enough to change anybody's even if you're working outdoor plans. the forecast for san jose. here's the big drop off. 76 tomorrow for our daytime high. just a cooler weather pattern with more fog. our friend if low pressure center gets back.

gets back in here starting tomorrow afternoon evening. it could get closer to us that it could trigger a few showers. the main impact is this cooling. mid-70s, upper 70s, you're going to find temperatures in the 80s. so the forecast tomorrow, this will be the forecast highs, you can see the blues and greens. those are very cool 60s and 50s even. that are going to really infiltrate the bay area. this will push all of that action into our neighborhood. as you travel through the bay area microclimates tomorrow, thrárs there's going to be 60s where there were 70s. and 80s where there were mid- 90s. the fog is going to be very

dense at times. so be prepared for that as you travel around. the five day forecast looks like this. the fog getting right along the coast. great highway, pacifica, the fog is going to be real dense. the next night tuesday night into wednesday morning. a lot of fog will get in. >> all right, thanks bill. >> thank you, bill. well, the streets of san jose are filled with music because the streets are filled with pianos. it's all part of an art exhibit that is drawing big crowds. impromptu concerts are breaking out at 20pianos. san yo se is the second -- san jose is the second city in the bay area to get the exhibit. >> coming in here, coming into public puts me in a different mind set. >> reporter: from teenagers to the homeless, each piano is drawing a wide range of people and sounds. the pianos will be out until september 21st. hundreds of cyclists spent

this labor day working hard to continue a san francisco tradition. the bike race was started back in 1975 as a san francisco grand prix. the race has moved through various parts of the city throughout the year. the current course takes the riders on a tour of telegraph hill and embarcadero. a nationwide effort that includes the bay area. the amount raised today and how that money will be used to help jerry's kids.

a labor day tradition across the country and here at channel 2, today helped raise millions of the dollars for research and treatment of muscular dystrophy. many volunteers helped out. despite the tough economy, ktvu viewers donated nearly $3 million. >> that is really something. more than 3 million in an economy like this here. hats off to the bay area. fred is here filling in for mark. who would have thought that the giants would be half a game
