good morning. firefighters scrambled in san rafael as a fire burned near highway 101. why firefighters were particularly concerned. >> traffic patterns changed today. we will tell you what that means for your commute times. >> a roller coaster ride for temperatures yesterday they went up and today we will tell you in 30 seconds. >> it already has, pam -- [ inaudible ] >> -- they will drop, they being san francisco, about 20 degrees today. the fog is already back, the wind is out of the west at travis to 20 miles an hour and even a southwest wind at vacaville, that all spells cooler, so 50s, 60s, 70s and a few low 80s. more on this in about five minutes. here is sal with an update on your traffic. >> good on 80 westbound although getting busier to the bay bridge toll plaza. this morning looking at traffic moving along nicely at the toll plaza. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we continue to follow developing news from marin county this morning. right now crews are putting out hot spots from an early morning fire. it started a short time ago just off highway 101 on southbound 101 near sir francis drake boulevard in larks spur. crews were able to keep the flames from nearby homes but the fire is still causing

traffic problems. sal will have more details later. >> this morning the coast guard resumes a search of the waters near tiberon responding to a may day call. last night a woman made a calm telling the coast guard she was dealing with some kind of emergency but didn't give details. it is believed that call came from an area east of the tiberon peninsula. the coast guard will send a helicopter over this area. we will be there as well. >> it was a violent night in oakland with a rash of shootings. they all happened right about the same time just after 10:00 last night. now a man was shot at foothill boulevard and scwond avenue. a woman was shot on 79th avenue and holly street and a man and a woman were shot at 36th street and west street. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez joins us now from oakland with more on all this violence, jade. >> reporter: good morning. investigations are not unusual

in oakland but last night the calls began rolling in. three shootings all within an hour as you minced. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd avenue where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. let's take a look at that video right there. while officers were helping that victim someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly streets. officers found a woman there. her finger had been shot off. paramedics rushed her to highland hospital. then decision patchers sent officers on their third shooting of the night. two victims were found in that shooting, a man and woman. their injuries were more severe, it appears they were sitting in their car when they were shot. both were rushed to highland hospital and surgery once they arrived. they are in critical condition. at this point these shootings don't seem to be connected but no information was reamessed about any of the victims. this morning the department is asking for anyone with any information about the shootings

to call police immediately. we have contacted the police department for more information. as soon as we get any more updates we will pass that information along town. reporting live in oakland their morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> in just a few hours police officers and volunteers will return to pittsburgh's keller canyon landfill. they will begin day five of the painstaking search for frederick salas. the 35-year-old nursing aid from hercules has been missing for nearly two weeks. investigators fear he may be the 5th victim of last week's deadly rampage. efrain valdemoro is suspected of killing his father along with three other people. >> we are finding out more about a homicide. police found the victim near the hotel yesterday morning. that victim has been identified as 26-year-old julius hues from the brentwood area. investigators say hughes was a

suspect any homicide in san francisco two years ago but the charges were dropped. police say he was attending a big party that ended in gunfire. >> there was a series of between 5 and 10 gunshots very rapid fire and then some very very angry words and they used a racial expletive that you don't want to hear. >> ktvu news obtained this picture of that sunday night pool party on a twitter account. police estimate as many as 400 people were there. investigators tarnow questioning many of those party guests to search for that man's killer. >> well, the noise created by a bart train can be as loud as a jackhammer. the chronicle is reporting that several locations on the system can have noise level loud enough to cause hearing damage. kraig debro is in oakland now with more on this report, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. we are at the west oakland bart station. a lot of people come here

before going into the city into san francisco. and if you have ever ridden on the transbay tube you know that once you are inside the tube the noise that the train makes on the track makes it hard to talk or even be heard. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: according to a story in this morning's chronicle the noise levels along parts of the system's 208 miles of track can reach unhealthy levels but are not sustained long enough to actually cause ears -- damage to the ears, according to the national institute for occupation safety and health. noise levels are measured in desbells, and there are 23 points along the track that reach levels that sound like a construction site. it has passengers thinking about their ears. >> i am not really sure. without a professional opinion, you know, loud music when you are young affects you too, so they say it is --

>> the desbell level is that of a jackhammer inside the tubes. >> every day. can't be good you think the loud noise affects your hearing. >> no, not really. it is not that loud. >> not rally. >> no, sometimes it gets louder than others but it is tolerable. >> so here is a list of some of the noisiest impart tory doors. we were just on that train. according to bart's chief spokesperson the system recently actually earned a top rating among rail systems of similar sizes. bart also brags about its grinders, multimillion dollar machines that shave of bits of track that can amplify noise with no affect on safety. coming up what you hear on bart as a passenger may sound a little about but what about the operators? i am going to talk to one of them and see how he deals with it. >> one man is in jail this

morning after a police chase and crash on the street of oakland at 12:30 early this morning after police tried to pull him over for speeding. the driver reportedly refused to stop, then sped down the parkway before crashing. >> he ended up running into the median and disabling his car. he fled from the car. officers gave foot pursuit of the vehicle and he was taken into custody. >> officers found a gun in some nearby bushes. a background check revealed that the driver was a parolee who was out on bail for another offense. >> all right. time now 6:08. let's check in with sal early on a tuesday morning right after a holiday. how are we looking sal? >> things are getting a little busier dave and pam right now traffic is moving along okay, though, for the most part off to a nice start. highway 4 looks good in bay point but slowing through antioch as is normal the case there in the two lane section just west of brentwood and

pockets of slow traffic up to bay point. also this morning's drive going to pe okay westbound bay bridge that traffic looks good into san francisco along the entire span. on the east shore freeway vallejo, panol and richmond that traffic looking pretty good. across the bay southbound 101 traffic moving along okay. that earlier grass fire in larks spur not really causing a traffic problem at all up over the hill from san rafael. here is steve. >> change todaych in fact temperatures 80s 90s, today more 60s and 70s and here is why, west of 13 at oakland low clouds and moving into sfo and fairfield west at 20. south at the napa airport at 13 and southwest seven at travis. that is all the sea breeze, that means cooler is on the way and the fog has come flying back so the headline cooler today. fog has returned. still shallow but it is there and starting to fill in. forecasted highs 50s to 80s, temperatures again big drop not

only today but also tomorrow. cooler with local drizzle late tonight and into tomorrow morning. as this system deepen it will give us a cool paper. temperatures current temperatures now 50s and 60s. 55 san francisco, fairfield 62, a southwest wind at 20. that is going to take the edge off big time today compared to yesterday. 59 livermore, 58 san jose now, 60 concord hayward at 57. you can see the leading edge right there. take another look at it it dives in and dives into northern california today. the front an the low itself tomorrow near the shasta area northern sacramento valley. that means our temperatures come down and the wind picks up. today seeing signs of that. 64 the high in san francisco after yesterday's 84. 46 tahoe, they were 39 last hour, the wind has turned southwest so they are 46, yet truckie is calm and 32. big difference there. 50s to the valley, 60s. then 50s up and down the cost. the fog is socked in now some locations in advance of this

system which will lift that fog tomorrow and give us even further cooling as that system moves in. it will eject out on wednesday but until then look for a big drop in these temperatures. fog on the coast starting to move around into the bay, sunny breezy but cooler today. highs 50s, 60s by the beaches, yesterday a lot of 80s, not today, 60s, 70s around the bay, upper 70s and low 80s now inland, the 5 day has a cooler spearn wednesday and thursday, a little rebound friday and saturday, pam and dave. >> something more than baby sounds are coming from crib monitors, what local families are saying about erratic activity from many household like strongs and why pg&e is being blamed. >> reporter: the top u.s. commander in afghanistan is calling on a small florida church to stop its plans to burn the koran this weekend. i will show you what the church

live with how the church is responding. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. and in just the last hour the head of a small gainesville, florida church went on live tv and said while he is concerned bought putting u.s. soldier's lives at risk his church will likely still go ahead with plans to burn the koran on september 11th. the church with just 50 members has sparked an international uproar, it wants to burn the core rashes to draw attention to what it calls radical islam but in afghanistan the top u.s. commander general david petraeus and others say the act would hurt the u.s. mission and put u.s. troops in danger. pastor terry jones said it would be tragic if troops lost their lives but he wants to stand up to islam. >> overseas we see they have no problem burning our flag, they have no problem calming for the death of america or for the death of our president so we feel it is time to stand up. >> reporter: now, if the church goes ahead with its plans to push the koran this weekend it

will be breaking local laws the church has twice aplayed for local permits to build a bond fire but has been denied. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> overnight police in los angeles made several arrests during a violent protest. demonstrators faced off with police late last night, some throwing bottles and setting trash cans on fire. now the protests stemmed from sunday's shooting death of a caught maland man who police say was say was armed with a knife. more complaibts about pge ut pge and e's smart meters.

they say they smarts emitting static after smart meters were installed. the pg&e response is that the problem is we the dwoises not the meters. >> san francisco supervisors will vote on whether to add a new tax to the cost of alcoholic drinks called the alcohol cost recovery fee and would add three to five cents to the cost of a bottle of beer, a glass of wine or any drink. now the idea is to help the city recoup up to 16 million dollars a year in healthcare costs related to school abuse. alcohol distributers and san francisco restaurants are opposing that fee. >> our emergency transport and our fire department, for treatment, prevention services and hospitalization of people whose lives are really shattered by alcohol. >> pretty soon the customer is going to get fed up and not- maybe you know drink in a hotel room. buy their liquor in a liquor

store. >> if it is approved this new fee would begin in january if it survives an expected veto by the mayor. >> an early member of the british rock groupe l 0 has died in a freak accident. the 62-year-old mike edwards was killed instantly when his van was crushed by a 1300 pound bail of hey. the hay apparently fell off a tractor on the road he was driving on in soul earn england on friday. he was with the band originally formed as the electric light orchestra from 1972 for 1975. >> a bay area family wants your help in a desperate search for a lovered one. >> we just want to make sure she is okay but if she doesn't want to come back- >> worried family members have not seen kimmie silverthorn for the past two weeks, they believe the 22-year-old pittsburgh woman may have traveled to the san jose area to sell magazines door to door. >> on the internet like she researched the traveling magazine door to door jobs they really like either lead to

yesterday, temperatures warm to hot, 80s and 90s, not today. in fact the next two dis will be dramatically cooler. the fog is already beginning to come back. filled in. a west wind at oakland at 13, west fairfield 20, south at napa airport at 13,any you get a south wind like that that is a cooler wind direction and you can see why leading edge of a system driving right down out of the pacific northwest is going to change our weather and it starts already. so fog returns. it has returned. 60s, 70s, low 80s inland. yesterday san francisco 84, how about 64 today? the fog is already there. 50s to 58, 59 here. santa rosa napa cool, 50 there 59 livermore-concord, 50 -- upper 50s for many, the fog will kind of take the edge off coast and bay temperatures, cooler begins today. fog on the coast around the bay sunny breeze i, 50s to 80s,

today 80s and 70s for some, 50s and 60s for others, looks like a really cool pattern into wednesday and thursday, the fog will get wiped out, so sunny, thursday and friday and warmer towards the end of the week pam and dave. >> thank you, steve. 6:20 is the time. former huh hewlett-packard ceo will have a new job. he was forced out after accusations of sexual harassment. keep an eye on harley davidson stock this morning. there are reports that the motorcycle maker and its union have reached an agreement that could keep hundreds of manufacturing jobs in wisconsin. now last month they threat especiallyed to move out of wisconsin if it could not reach a cost cutting agreement with the union. the motorcycles nicknamed milwaukee iron have been built in that city for 107 years. if there is a deal it still has to be approved by the workers.

>> 6:21. google is talking with music industry leaders and this could lead to competition for anem's itunes. no deals have been signed yet but sources say google may open a download store and a digital song locker that would let mobile users play songs on their mp3 devices wherever they are. that would benefit music labels by giving them bargainic power with apple. that to could be up and running by the holidays. >> 6:21 is the time right now. a major fire is burning out of control in colorado right now. why the battle has been particularly emotional for some of the firefighters. >> also an ugly dispute at a dog park leaves one man with injuries not caused by a dog. we will tell you how this could mean changes for that park from now on.

is fueling a wildfire in the foothills near boulder. hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate and there are reports that dozens of homes have been burned, including at least four owned by firefighters. high winds have grounded firefighting planes and helicopters, there are no reports of injuries but man yay evacuees say they could feel the heat from the flames as they left. crews are expected to return to the petalooma river this morning to clean up an oil leak. it covers a two mile stretch from downtown petalooma to highway 101. the source is an old tugboat being torn apart. it was first noticed yesterday morning, so far 600 gallons have made it into the river. officials say there is no harm to wildlife in the area but it is still unclear how long the clean up will take. the cause is under

investigation. >> an incident in a dog park area could lead a limit on the number. police say a 69-year-old woman scratched and bit a 37-year-old man as he tried to break up a fight between her and another dog owner at the city's dog park. next month a park and recreation committee will consider whether to change the rules. some people say the economy is playing a part in the increasing number of disputes. >> there has been a lot of layoffs and people losing their jobs. i have seen a lot of people come into the dog park where you know this is where they come with their pets because they are stressed out. >> now some dog owners suggested people are taking dog squirm issues a little too personally, while others say people simply need to use some common sense. >> well, a busy night for oakland police. the string of shootings that happened all within one hour. >> in just about 15 minutes we expect the coast guard helicopter to go on a search

they are dealing with. >> they are hoping to find whoever made this call. live from the bridge. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 6:true. overnight firefighters responded to a huge fire at an oakland motel. now the flames damaged six units at the travel inn on west mcarthur boulevard, also damaged two cars. that fire was reported about midnight. a traveling nurse from mississippi says she and her co- worker were staying next door to the unit where that fire broke out. >> the flames was gushing out. it was over the top of the balcony and everything so it was kind of bad and i am still shaken up a little bit from that. >> that nurse and other guests

have been relocated to other parteds of the motel that were not damaged. luckily no one was hurt. investigators say the fire was started by a man smoking drugs in one of the rooms. now he was taken to the hospital for evaluation. >> it was a busy night for oakland police. they were called to three shootings all at just about the same time. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now from oakland with more on the story. jade. >> reporter: good morning, we are live at oakland police headquarters this morning where recently 80 officers were laid off. there has been some dispute on whether or not crime is actually up in the city. last night officers were extremely busy with what resources they had. three shootings all within an hour in the city. the first happened at foothill boulevard and 62nd avenue where a man was shot. someone shot the man in the back. while officers were 4e7ing that victim someone drove up to them and reported another shooting on 79th avenue and holly

after a high speed chase and crash in hayward. officers say they tried to pull over a driver for talking on his cell phone yesterday but he sped off. the driver hit another car before his car overturned. and he and a passenger took off running. officers caught the driver and then learned he had an outstanding warrant. he now faces felony hit-and-run and evading arrest charges. >> 6:35. let's get you to where you need to go this morning. sal knows all about your commute. >> dave, good morning to you and good morning. pam. let's go outside. i wanted to show oe the traffic at the toll plaza is beginning to fill in. again after the labor day holiday a lot of people back to work, pack to school. the unofficialnd f summer anyway and traffic is backed up for a 10 or 15 minute delay. or actually oakland pardon me, oakland traffic looks good into the city of oakland driving up to downtown. southbound traffic already busy. 237 we have stop and go traffic

here as you cross 880. it is not too bad but it is getting slower on the way over to sunnyvale. 6:36. here is steve. >> sal, thank you. good morning. big change today. yesterday san francisco much of the coast 80s. inland 90s. not today. a lot of 50s and 60s. the headline is cooler today. much cooler tomorrow. the fog has already returned. forecasted highs 58 to 64. maybe even local drizzle late tonight into tomorrow morning. we will start a rebound towards the end of the week but nothing chose to what we had on monday. the reason why we are going to cool down is that system right there where it says turning cooler. a decent low starting to drop in. forecasted highs yesterday as you know they went above well today they are below. sabt a rosa 94, 76 today. 84 san francisco. 64 today. walnut creek five to 78. oakland downtown 86, we will go

67. san jose 93 to 78 degrees. an hour ago mt. tam was still at 70. the same as yesterday. now they are two degrees cooler. speaking of cooler sonoma outside the square 48. chilly. gilroy down to 50. san carlos mid-50s same for vallejo and pleasanton. 46 tahoe, they were 39, that south wind and the temperature goes up. truckie calm and 32. 50s up and down the coast. the fog has joined forces in advance of that system right there. not rain wise but it is going to give us fog and much cooler temperatures and will pick up the wind. there are signs our 7 and 10 day outlooks next week keep us cool and one of them puts rain on us, next week, next wednesday or thursday. we will see, the trend is dig another system in, cool us down then warm us up a little bit then get big time cooling. our temperature forecast map starts off in the 50s and 60s. by noon the 60s and 70s and 80s

to the interior then backs off fast by 5:00 today as that fog starts to come flying back in, then tomorrow we will start off on the cool side. a lot of 50s, 60s. watch how we never get above the 70s tomorrow. that is it. so tomorrow will be a really cool day. as that fog begin to win out. fog on the coast, sunny and breezy today with cooler temperatures, 50s, 60s, 70s and low 80s and windy towards the dealt a later on. cooler on wednesday. we wipe out the fog, keep it sunny but not that warm thurls, warmer friday and saturday. >> all right. thank you, steve. 6:39 is the time. bay area firefighters are heading to humboldt county to help with the growing wildfire there. that fire is burning near the community of pea south of eureka. it started just after 9:00 last night. crews on the fire lines will be getting assistance from 21 local firefighters who left from sunol a few hours ago. once they arrive they will be up against rough terrain and high winds.

to be among the loudest. we didn't have any equipment to pleasure the desbell levels inside inside the train this morning. they can be harmful at 85. however the institute says most people would have to be exposed to 91 decibels for two hours before hearing damage could set in. to the embarcadero, from 24th street to 16th street and and from ray rine da to rock ridge. we will talk to bart about the story. >> there are angry parents in navato this morning after several children were forced to transfer to other schools only two weeks after their first days of class. the problem, overcrowding. school district officials say they overbooked several elementary schools thinking that some students would not show um. but now they have to relocate some of those children to make sure the district meets class sizes in order to get the maximum funding from the state. the man known as spider dan is facing charges of trespassing and causing a public nuisance after climbing one of san francisco's tallest skyscrapers. spectators yesterday watched as
