burns off and some local drizzle, then upper 70s, low to mid 80s now away from the okay. sal with an update on your traffic. >> good morning. right now traffic on 80 westbound, steve, looks good out to the macarthur maze. no major problems here. also the morning commute looks good westbound towards the paygates a little bit of a slow down, now back to dave and pam. >> 6:01. we are beginning our 6:00 hour with new developments in last week deadly explosion and fire in san bruno, governor schwarzenegger will be at the disaster zone this afternoon after coming back from his trade mission to asia. dispatchers have now released the chilling audiotapes that capture all of the day osand confusion of the frantic first moments of that disaster. and the first responders are now describing those terrifies moments. let's start our coverage with claudine wong, she has been talking with the ntsb about where this investigation is going. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, certainly the ntsb has a

lot of work in front of it but they are finished with the pipe hire at the site. they are, however, not ready to leave yet because they still have a lot to do. they are headed this morning to a monitoring site in san francisco to talk to the employees there to look at records and to conduct interviews. this morning there is also a lot of talk about the add -- the valves the shut off valves that were near this 30 inch natural gas line pipe. pg&e says it took crews time to get two manual shut oofl valves -- to get them shut off. which was about a mile away from the explosion sight. it took 90 minutes for them to shut down, which as you can imagine felt like an eternity for crews dealing with this out of control fireball. some asked why there was no automatic shut off valves. well the ntsb tooled me they are not required and aren't actually common on pipes of the size. more likely to see them on smaller pipes like the type

that go into your home. they are talking about making automatic valves a requirement and the ntsb is looking into how that would have changed the aftermath but that is not the only focus of their investigation. >> we are doing a lot of work regarding looking at the controlling and monitoring stations, called supervisor control and data acquisition systems where the control and monitoring occurs. we will be looking at the valves to see what condition they are in. we will be doing extensive witness interviews of pg&e employees and people who send in e-mails and other people so we still have quite a bit of work to do. >> reporter: the ntsb is also looking in past incidents. recommendations were made then. the ntsb is looking at how those recommendations were followed. and again there is also this

issue of was there a gas smell. they have been asking the public.com come forward, to e- mail them, to call them, to give them any information about anything they might have smelled or seen in the days leading up to this explosion. if no one smelled gas or no one reports smelling gas in those days that may be credit cam to determining how all this happened and we will talk about that more in detail coming up. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we are hearing from the first firefighters and police officers on the scene. some of those first responders are sharing their painful stories of the pipe explosion disaster for the first time describing what it is like to race into the middle of an inferno. >> we were left heapless and we could only go so far pause the wire wooer was just so incredibly intensely hot and beyond anything i could describe so it was a helpless feeling knowing there were people we could not get to. >> in all more than fur hundred firefighters and police

officers responded to the scene of that explosion. we will have live team coverage of the san bruno pipeline disaster and the investigation throughout the morning. you can also get updates anytime of day at our website ktvu.com. well, two men were arrested in san francisco overnight following a fatal shooting that happened right at the victim's front door. jade hernandez is in the bayview district this morning and has talked to relatives of the victim. jade. >> reporter: well, san francisco police just opened up part of the street about 20 minutes ago. we did speak with family members and police this morning about what happened last night. family members tell us that 57- year-old dennis wayne dixon was shot in the doorway of his apartment, that is the apartment with the light on the porch and his stepson was tied up and beaten. take a look at this. paramedics rushed him to the hospital. we are told the stepson lived here with him and may soon be

released from the hospital later this morning. the details which led up to the shooting are not complete yet. initially police confirmed this was a home invasion but the victims and suspects may have known each other. his mother was told her son pulled up to the apartment and exchanged words with the suspects which is when they tried to force themselves into the apartment. that is when dennis dixon was shot in the doorway. we are even hearing the stepson wasn't the only one in the apartment at the time of the shooting. her mother told us her son was a vendor of sorts and had a booth where he sold clothes and dvds out of. she said she could barely understand the bad news. >> she was crying on the phone but i could not understand nothing but i know he had got cult three months ago, he got cut and then this happened, got killed. >> we understand san francisco police arrived quickly to the

scene and arrested two men they believed were involved in the shooting by 1:00 this morning. at this point detectives are still investigating this homicide. we watched them take a canine officer inside the apartment and pull out a bag of evidence just jins the time we were here. reporting live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 6:07. oakland police want your help this morning. they are trying to find a missing teenager. take a look at her photo. she was last seen almost a week ago leaving oakland technical high school. she is 5'10," 130 pounds wearing red basketball shorts a black sweatshirt and red, white and black nike shoes if you have any information contact police. >> 6:08 is the time.

washington, d.c. newsroom with what this could mean for knee november elections. good morning, alison. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. some republicans are so frustrated by last night's tea party victories they might not even support last night's big winners. tea party favorite christine o'donnell staged a sting upset over nine term republican congressman mike castle in the delaware republican primary, now there are questions about whether the national gop fund- raising machine will back her. she says it just doesn't matter. >> i would love their support but they are the same so-called experts who said i could not win the primary. >> the tea party candidate also upset a more established republican in new york, democrats say it is good news in their fight to control congress because they believe independents will break their way in november rather than support extreme tea party

candidates, live from washington, d.c. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> this is day 77 of california without a budget. the governor is due bake from asia today and is expected to meet with republican and democratic leaders. the two sides are still arguing over whether tax increases or budget cuts should be used to balance the budget. >> 6:15. some bay area parents say they are caught right in the middle of the budget stalemate because the state funded child development center in oakland will close in the next two weeks unless there is a budget miracle in sacramento. >> we have not had any money since june and so we are at our last. we have no funds. >> the center has been providing free or low cost child care to low income families for 37 years. it has never had to close because of money problems. parents we talked to were frustrated by the legislature and the governor. this year is on track to be the longest the state has gone without a new budget.

well former president bill clinton has now endorsed fellow democrat jerry brown for governor. just two days ago jerry brown apologized for making a joke about bill clinton. in his endorsement the former president said he would make an excellent governor. >> lieutenant-governor able maldonado has been one of the most visible state officials at the san bruno disaster scene. now the california democratic party is accusing him of using it for his own political gain, as acting governor he declared the state of emergency and conducted press conferences and his office alerted news cameras to be there when he delivered fruit to burn victims. >> you know i could have shown up two days later and not taken care of the people of san bruno and then they would have been writing maldonado doesn't show up. >> some say he needs airtime to improve his chances in the lieutenant-governor's race against better known san

now, here is steve. >> a lot of fog and temperatures on the cool side. a lot of 50s, i did see a 49 at gilroy so if you are under clear skies you are a little cooler, chillier. low clouds, fog and some of that is producing dries owl. there is a few high clouds to the north but that is not the system we are worried about. so 60s, 70s, low to mid 80s, near average for the inland areas but for the coast it is still going to be below average. san francisco should be 71. 64 for a high today, 64. 50s san rafael and napa to 57 san jose and everyone is in between, cooler for some f i you don't have to fog as id said. there that is system, that is the one we are watching rain will make it to the north bay on saturday, today fog, drizzle, mostly sunny, slightly warmer, a late breeze, till a west, southwest breeze in place, 60s, 70s, low to mid 80s, we keep it sure on thirst, then the cool down as that

system gets closer on friday, cloudy north, clearing then breezy on sunday. pam and dave. >> the concerns about the global economy continue f this price of an ounce of gold is higher. a university forecast predicts california's unemployment picture will keep the state's economy from growing for a while. ucla's just released anderson forecast says the state is unlikely to jen trait enough jobs to bring unemployment down to single digits until the end of 2012. personal income though is predicted toe grow slightly. toyota has moved to dismiss hundreds of lawsuits over claims of sudden acceleration, the motion claims that toyota owners failed to identify any defects in their vehicles. millions of toyotas were recalled because of reports of acceleration problems but company attorneys now contend there is no evidence of a flaw. >> time now 6:20. new reports from congressional

investigators indicate salmonella may have been found in egg farms two years ago. tests cucted conducted indicate salmonella may have been found in 2008. 1 test showed the particular strain of salmonella that recently sickened 1500 people. those tests however were not performed on the eggs. san jose city officials want a say on how high speed rail trains will zip in and out of the downtown area. >> i want to make summer that the people of san jose have something we can be proud of. >> well, the ram authority wants an overhead high speed rail track but some 70 officials are concerned it could be an eye sorry and really cause a lot of noise. yesterday the city council voted to have its staff nght a deal with the rail authority. the city wants the option on an underground tunnel on the table of have input and final approval of a high speed elevated track. >> unfit to ply.

$300,000 to clean up graffiti from pray structures. it goes on like paint and it supposed to make it so smooth it doesn't stick. >> one of the nation's top jockeys is recovering from a devastating fall. doctors say he is paralyzed from the waist down. take a look. he was thrown to the ground last sunday. his horse clipped the heels of another horse. his spinal chord was severed when that 1100 pound horse rolled on top of him. the physician there at the track says that was the worst accident he has ever seen. >> he broke paul the ribs alongside that area, had bleeding into his lungs as well as a major head injury. >> mr. martinez briefly regained consciousness yesterday. he opened his eyes and he was speaking. the other part of the story is

what they were seeing on the ground. [ inaudible ] [ sirens ] >> [ inaudible ] >> -- blocks on fire at this time. >> the dispatchers of the san mateo dispatch center are used to hearing the voices of people who need help when 911 calls started coming in last thursday. not only did they handle calls from the public but first responders as well. last thursday -- [overlapping speakers] [ inaudible ] >> -- natural gas leak and explosion, multiple structures, multiple vehicles. >> we were left helpless. we could only go so far because the wall of fire was so incredibly intensely hot. it is beyond anything i could describe so it was a helpless feeling knowing there were people we could not get to. >> reporter: yesterday they answered questions from the news media yesterday they said the fire made helpings of people impossible -- [ inaudible ] >> reporter: -- future large

scale disasters. live from san bruno, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> according to pg&e's own documents its highest risk natural gas spine lines in the bay area are both in the east bay. they rated a pipeline in fremont and another between live more and sunol as the highest risk natural gas lines in the area. >> 6:stlee. a motorcyclist, who police say was driving around the san bruno explosion site, is facing some very serious chargings. 34-year-old paul lee is accused of evading and assaulting a police officer. police say just hours after that san bruno explosion they pulled lee over. while he was being questioned about why he was in the area police say lee jumped on his motorcycle and sped off, running over a police officer's

foot. we will have live team coverage of the san bruno pipeline disaster. all the latest news all morning long. you can get updates at anytime at our channel 2 website ktvu.com. >> police are investigating an overnight shooting in east oakland that seriously injured one man. the victim was found on holloway street around 2:30 this morning suffering from several gunshot wounds, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. investigators spent the morning searching the area for evidence but so far no word of any arrests or what may have led up to that shooting. the victim's name is not being released. oakland police are currently testing 15 video cameras worn by officers in the field. the department is asking the city to spend more than half a million dollars on 350 of those cameras meant to provide an added layer of accountability

and trust between the police and the public. the department wants to use founds allo indicated three years ago for incar cameras that were never used because that system didn't work. >> police arrested a 57-year- old man accused of totally shooting his roommate around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. police responded to an emergency call. the victim was found in the driveway, had been shot several times. he died at a hospital a short time later. police are asking anyone with information to contact them. a 29-year-old san francisco man is due in court today to face charges in a deadly weekend crash in the city's richmond district. prosecutors say william rojas will be charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license. police say rojas ran a stop sign in his suv early saturday morning and hit another car. a 65-year-old woman, who was a passenger in that other car,

was killed. a pedestrian who was hit and killed by a train in menlo park has been identified now. the san mateo county coroner's office says 53-year-old stephen ebaugh of menlo park was hit by a southbound train about 5:00 p.m. last sunday. still not clear why he was on the tracks. ebaugh was reportedly a veteran of the u.s. marine core and a member of the palo alto elks club. >> the man killed in a fishing boat accident in the san francisco bay has been identified, roland reed died after the boat slammed into the rocks yesterday morning. the 71-year-old man was a passenger on that boat. he had gone out fishing with three friends. they were not wearing life jackets. it is still not clear what caused the crash. yusef bay the 4th's request to move his murder trial is set for a second day of hearings

today. he and his co-defendant, antoine mackey are accused of murdering chauncey bailey and two others in 2007. defense attorneys say intense media attention prevents a fair trial in alameda county and they want it moved to los angeles. >> 6:36. uc berkeley graduate sarah shourd is spending her first full day of freedom with her mother. she was released from prison and flown by private jet for this long awaited reunion with her mother. she was released after being detained almost 14 month ascaused of spying. officials neglected a deal for her half million dollar bail. >> i feel myself i have a huge debt to repay the world for what it has done for me and my first priority is to help my fiance shane bower and my friend josh vet al to regain their freedom because they don't deserve to be in prison

anymore. >> the state department is encouraging the president of iran to bring those two men with him. >> 6:37 is the time. how does the commute look? >> it looks okay. we have not had a lot of accidents but we are getting slow traffic so it has been a quiet morning on the accident front. now we are beginning to see slowing here at the bay bridge toll plaza, which is not unusual getting into san francisco. checking the bridge to make sure there is nothing on it that we need to worry about. right now traffic does seem to be okay. westbound 4 in antioch just got word of an injury accident just came in of a motorcycle blocking the two right lanes traffic is quickly back in up. this is 237 live, that traffic is moving along okay. let's go to the maps, traffic is okay if you are driving on northbound and southbound 101. no major problems on the commute there. if you are into south bay, northbound 280 traffic and northbound 101 still look good.

point. detectives have moved all of their resources right here to police headquarters. we did speak to family this morning. we understand that 57-year-old dennis wayne dixon was shot in his doorway, in the doorway of his apartment last night at 11:00. now his 22-year-old stepson dejohn was tied up and beaten, paramedics rushed him to the hospital. we are told the stepson lived there at the apartment with his stepfather and may soon be released from the hospital later this morning. the details which led up to the shooting are not complete. initial ail police confirmed this was a home invasion put the victims and the suspects may have known each oamplet dennis dixon's mother told us this morning that she was told her son pulled up to the apartment before 11:00 last night and exchanged words with one of the suspects. there is some dispute as to if he made it inside his apartment and then re-opened his doors at which time one of the suspects

the company that owns the mine has sought bankruptcy protection. it says it can't pay those miners anymore. >> a trial is underway for a man accused in a drunk driving crash that killed nick adenhart. 23-year-old andrew galo has entered a not guilty plea. testimony is expected today from a passenger who says he was drinking alcohol at three different bars on the night of the crash. he died hours after his season debut. >> in san francisco mayor gavin newsom is threatening to veto a new alcohol fee. this fee would be applied to alcohol wholesalers. bar and restaurant owners say that fee would end up being passed along to retailers and then to the customers, which
