josh was crushing. >> josh and shane remain in custody 13 months after the three hikers were captured near the iraq/iran border. she said the trio was visiting a nearby waterfall and had no idea they were near the iran border which she says was not marked. >> shane and josh do not deserve to be in prison one day longer than i was. we committed no crime. and we are not spies. >> reporter: she thanked iranian leaders for her release after there was concern about her medical condition. she now says doctors tell her she is fine. one of those she thanked the president also spoke out today saying the humanitarian gesture his government made should be reciprocated by the u.s. >> i believe that it would not be misplaced to ask that the u.s. government should make a humanitarian gesture to release

the iranians who were illegally arrested and detained here in the united states. >> for now, it appears the u.s. government has no intention of making a deal with iran. >> i'm concerned about what i see going on. and i am, of course, grateful and appreciative that sarah was released. and i want to see not only her to compatriots, but other persons who are held without cause released as well. >> though my friends and i never intended or chose to go to iran, the tragedy of our imprisonment has forever marked our destinies. >> her mother lives in oakland. it's not clear when the two women will return to the bay area. we are just hours away from a new way of commuting here in the bay area. the first toll lane is set to open at a major traffic bottleneck. starting tomorrow morning solo drivers can slide into a carpool lane on southbound i- 680 from highway will 84 to

route 37 but for a price. maureen naylor joins us with the story. the signs are in place tonight. you can see part of the express way from where we are standing. seven hours from now north carolina's first toll lane will officially open. but carpoolers need to take precautions to make sure they are not charged unnecessarily. >> last-minute computer tests were underway this evening on new sensors along southbound 680 in fremont starting at 5:00 tomorrow morning, the system will give solo drivers the option to pay to drive with carpoolers in this express lane. marked off with double white lines. >> i think i would be willing to pay money as a single driver to drive on the express lane. >> why? >> because it will get me where i need to go faster. >> it is stupid because it is a lane that is already there that the taxpayers already paid for. so why make us pay more to just drive on it. >> the toll lane starts at

highway 84 and stretches 14 miles stretch to highway north. here is how it works. you enter the express lane at certain points. on weekdays between 5:00 in the morning and 8:00 at night, these sensors will detect the flow of traffic. this electronic sign which tonight read "test" come tomorrow will let drivers know what the current toll is. transportation officials say the cost will range between 30 cents and $6 depending on how congested the traffic is. then, sensors over the toll lane will charge the drivers fast-track device. >> i will debate whether or not it's the length that i need to travel is worth the amount that i'm being asked to pay. but i knew i would need to get a fast-track. >> i do think that's a good way of making revenue, given where we are right now. >> how much revenue is yet to be seen. along with how many other areas might adopt a similar structure. now, the lane is free for carpoolers, motorcyclists and hybrid owners who have their stickers. but one word of caution,

carpoolers must take down their fast-track device or else they will be charged. and as a note, the entire cost for the improvement along 680 $190 million to taxpayers, 37 went to the express lane alone. reporting live in fremont maureen naylor, ktvu, channel 2 news. well, bay area drivers apparently aren't making the grade. all state insurance ranked the cities with the safest drivers. here in the bay area hayward was ranked the best at number 22. that's out of 193 cities surveyed nationwide. san jose came in at number 131. sunnyvale wasn't far behind at 133. freedom came in at 152. oakland didn't fare much better at 153. san francisco drivers were near the bottom at 185. analysts looked at damage claims over two years to come up with those rankings. >> and you can find the latest traffic information as well as more information on the new i- 680 toll lane by going to our website ktvu, channel 2 news.

the sole process of recovery is underway for dozens of families in sanbruno. a fundraiser was held to help the families victimized by the pipeline explosion and fire that devastated their neighborhood. ktvu, channel 2 news's john sasaki was there. >> little darling, it feels like years since you've been here. >> hundreds of people came to sanbruno's high school today for a day of live music, games and food all in the name of disaster relief. a fundraiser for the victims of the explosion and fire on september 9th. we just got to, you know, be strong and pull together. and support the ones that were really impacted by this. ♪ i'll help you carry on ♪ >> reporter: the organizers is a singer sophomore walsh who says many of her classmates were affected by the fire. >> my mom did me a favor and made some calls to a friend of hers and to friends that are musicians. we you this knew it bands

wanted to play. people were donating things. and it came together a lot faster than we thought it could. >> reporter: record some of the people were escorted back into the fire zone to sift through the remains of their homes. that family who went into the house where neighbors say jessica morales died did recover some belongings. city officials with them told me they found some jewelry and other items. this family was not allowed into their glenview home. >> it's all a memory now. you know, we've got nothing even to prove it, just the pings of the house. everything is gone. >> reporter: all they recovered was their mailbox. and they say they don't plan to rebuild. >> even if they do, we don't want to live here no more. >> reporter: why is that? >> scared. you know, don't want to re-live the moment. better off somewhere else. >> reporter: just up the street while a cleaning crew was working on one house. >> those top windows all have cracks in them. >> reporter: a neighbor whose home sustained relatively minor damage was still clearly shaken ten days later.

>> little things like trying to relax in the house, there is no relaxing in the house. i find myself going through the motions of the day trying to be as normal as possible as you can under these circumstances. what i see down the street haunts me. >> reporter: perhaps those victims can taken solace in the events here at the high school. the organizer tells me she hopes in the end to have raised about $5,000 for the fire victims. until sanbruno, i'm john sasaki, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> more than a week after the sanbruno disaster, four victims are still in the hospital with severe injuries. the doctors now say they are making progress. joseph gomez and allan brawn, his wife cindy brawn and her sister sandy arnold are recovering at the burn center at st. francis hospital in san francisco. doctors say three of the victims are still hooked up to machines to help them breathe, but are expected to be taken off the devices in a few days. stay with ktvu, channel 2 news for continuing coverage of the

sanbruno explosion and fire. get updates on air an online by going to ktvu, channel 2 news and clicking on the sanbruno fire tab. oakland police tonight are searching for a suspect and a motive in an early morning shooting that wounded four people. the victims were shot just after 2:30 this morning near embarcadero east and franklin street just across the street from jacqueline square. the four were taken to the spital with non life threatening wounds. for the second time in just a few weeks, an oakland city council member has been a crime victim. last night at about 9:30 council woman and mayoral candidate jean kwan had her purse snatched in the safeway parking lot on fruitvale avenue. she wasn't hurt. and her purse, minus valuables was found a short time later. no arrests have been made. earlier this month councilman's home in the fruitvale district was burglarized. >> police are searching for two gunmen wanted in connection with a saturday night shooting. it happened at 9:00 in the 1500

block of trellis lane just south of the airport. officers say a 20-year-old man was wounded in the chest. he was taken to memorial hospital in santa rose is a and is expected to recover. a police search of the neighborhood for two men turned up nothing. both are believed to be armed. anyone with any information on this is asked to contact the authorities. meanwhile, police in the east bay city of pittsburgh are investigating a multiple shooting that left a young man dead outside a party. investigators say 18-year-old adrian gonzalez was shot and killed outside his home in the 800 block around 11:30 last night. two other victims have been treated and released from the hospital. police say the shooting started when a fight broke out during a party at gonzalez's house. so far no arrests have been made and police have not named any suspect. a parolee is back behind bars tonight after police say he had pipe bombs and bomb making material in a danville

home. ktvu's christian kaf it ton reports now on the call that led to that discovery. >> today's bomb square began with a domestic call at 9 this morning in dan develop. danville. neighbors say the people living here were fighting in front of the home. police arrived and searched the house. inside they found three pipe bombs and the material to make more. diane said she had no idea the pipe bombs were inside her home. >> i have no idea where it came from. i just found it. someone put it in the back there and i found it. and now they came and took care of it. >> reporter: danville police evacuated homes in the area. arrested 36-year-old eric dennis and called in the bomb squad who detonated the devices in the street. neighbors say this is a quiet area and they never suspected there might be bombs in a home just a few yards away. >> not the kind of thing we want, obviously. we want this neighborhood to be safe and we want families to feel safe. and it was -- it's very unfortunate situation. >> neighbors say they are

>> the majority of homicides in san jose are gang related. we simply will not have the resources to address gangs today like we did yesterday. >> with an estimated 9,000 validated gang members in san jose, romero who owns a restaurant in the same shopping center is worried about safety. >> very, very insecure because we knew this. >> reporter: the police officer's association today took out this full page ad in the mercury news saying the city has misplaced its priorities and need to keep vset. two council members turned out echoing the protest. >> it is a critical part of our gang expression which is really the national model. >> the mayor has basically said this is my budget. these are the way the cuts will be made. either you support it or you don't. >> reporter: this is the ninth year in a row san jose police have trimmed the force to fit the budget. chief rob davis says there is simply no more room. >> we have cut around the department everywhere else. we are at a stage where we have

done the surgery. we are at the bone. hardcore surgery. cutting out some of those bone pieces of the skeleton and it's difficult to do. >> mayor chuck reid says by absorbing the 18 officers into patrol the city should be able to wage its war against gangs. >> lots of police officers still on the force. they will be doing their jobs. gang is a high priority. gang expression is a high priority. >> mayor reid says opposition to the cuts is political. they oppose v and w on the november ballot which limit outside arbitration and allow the city to change the pension plans. police and fire pensions play a large budget in the city's budget crunch. in san jose, ktvu, channel 2 news. 79 defendants in sacramento county have had their charges dismissed after prosecutors decided the arresting officer had based improperly. and a judge agreed. most of the arrests were for drunk driving and most of the accused had admitted their guilt. prosecutors say former sacramento police officer

brandon mullik allegedly conducted improper dui and falsified the police reports. some of those who have had their charges missed will file lawsuits seeking damages. there is no word yet if he will face charges in the matter. governor arnold schwarzenegger is among 3-4 governors of u.s. border states who will be missing an upcoming meeting on border security starting tomorrow in new mexico. the governor says he needs to deal with the state budget and is sending the governor to represent california. arizona governor jan brewer won't attend because the meeting was originally scheduled in her state and the governors of six mexican states refused to participate because of arizona's recently passed immigration law. texas governor rick parry says he won't go as a gesture of support to governor brewer. new mexico governor will richardson will attend. members of a religious sect reported missing in southern california say the whole thing is just a big misunderstanding.

the 13 members of the breakaway group were found safe at about noon today preying at a palmdale park. authorities say the group went missing yesterday and left behind evidence it was awaiting the rap tour. a search was launched amid fears of a possible suicide pact. the members insist that was not the case. >> we have here can you see me? i'm okay, the dogs and everybody is okay. we eat like you guys. we drink the same soda that you do. we don't see nothing bad. and we are okay. >> the group's leader has been placed under a 72-hour mandatory psychiatric hold. two former stars of the ncaa are suing to make the organization share revenues with student these. ex-arizona state quarterback and san rahmone native sam keller along with ed o3 banan are succeeding to make the college organization give some compensation to these.

their claim includes silicon valley video make he were electronic arts which uses images of these in its game. the ncaa insist students should not be paid to play. but a federal judge in san francisco has refused to throw out the lawsuits. [ applause ] >> the oakland raiders played their home opener today at the coliseum. for the first time since 2004 the home opener was not a sellout. the low ticket sales meant the game wasn't televised here in the bay area. the nfl requires a sellout 72 hours before kickoff. the raiders aren't alone. 11 nfl teams reportedly could face t.v. blackouts in their home markets this season. the reasons vary for why fans aren't showing up, including the team's performance and the downed economy. blackouts are also affecting local businesses and restaurants who usually profit from the nfl season. >> there are a lot of teams going to be blacked out this year. and unable to see the games in their home markets. and economics, i would assume

than 50,000. in other news of the world tonight, in afghanistan president karzai called this weekend's parliamentary vote a solid success. but the main group observing the election said there are serious concerns about fraud. at least 21 civilians and nine police officers were killed during the voting. in the meantime, nato forces say three service members died in two separate attacks yesterday. >> and at the united nations the secretary general welcomed iranian president. the leader is in new york to attend the u.n. general assembly. he told the press later that iran has no nuclear ambitions beyond producing power. and that u.n. sanctions were having no effect on his nation. speaking through an interpreter he said: "the future belongs to iran." >> and in chile, president visited the mine where 33 men have been trapped now for 47 days 2,000 feet underground.

he spoke to the miners through a video hookup. he also flipped the switch to start the third and largest drill handed to those rescue efforts. it is hoped that this new drill will carve a hole big enough to pass a man through. experts say if everything goes well the miners could return to the surface on october 18th. american muslims are holding a summit about the controversial plans to build an islamic center near what was the world trade center. muslim leaders met today at a hotel by jfk airport along with the plans for the islamic center they are concerned about a perceived rise of anti muslim feeling in the u.s. such as threatened and actual burnings of the koran. the group plans to hold a news conference tomorrow on the site where the islamic center would be built. in the santa cruz mountains scott valley police have released a photo of a man arrested for impersonating an officer in hopes of finding potential victims. kelly was arrested two weeks ago at his home on scots valley

drive. the arrest came after a three- month investigation of kelly. police say the suspect managed to buy a white retired police car over the internet. they say he then outfitted it with standard police items including a scanner, siren and lights. anyone who may have been stopped by kelly or saw him impersonating an officer is asked to call the police. [ music ] an unwelcome guest this weekend in bermuda. the history being made on the island because of a hurricane. family and friends gather at a vigil tonight near the scene of an accident where four young lives ended. what the victims had been celebrating.

. >> fears waves pounded bermuda today as hurricane igor brushed by the island. the category 1 storm packed

sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. igor's eye is currently moving to the northwest. the storm is not expected to impact the u.s. railed wolf is on the island and begins our storm coverage. >> reporter: the center of hurricane igor is still some distance away from bermuda, but the outer bands are coming through. coming through with some incredibly strong winds with 70 miles per hour. some heavy rainfall is intermittent at times and the surf has been just spectacular. behind you can see what is left of elbow beach and everything else covered by the water and the high waves continue to roll in. the causeway has been shut down due to the strong winds. travelling is dangerous on the island. however we were able to get out a while ago and this is what we saw. >> i have come here from ashwood coffee, bermuda. we are getting hammered by hurricane igor here in bermuda. the strength of the storm is yet to come. this is heavy rainfall and immense waves keep battering

the shoreline. the wind has been very strong at times. tropical storm force winds with some hurricane force winds just coming onshore. we pan over just a little bit and you can see just the sheer power of these things pounding up against the rocks. it doesn't matter which direction you go, it's really a sight to see. white caps a as far as you can get on the horizon. of course closer to shore, you see all of that foam. now, we do have some good news with the storm. that is not expected to make a direct hit on the island. hurricane igor is actually supposed to pass a little bit to the west. as it does so we will get caught with the brunt of the storm. the northeast quadrant and sector of the storm which will bring the strong rainfall and again the pounding surf. it is expected to move north monday and tuesday. things will slowly get back to normal and the cleanup begins. let's send it back to you in the studio. >> hurricane igor officially curbed passed burr moved did at

7:00 pacific time tonight leaving thousands without power in its wake. igor was a near miss with the center of the storm passing 45 miles west, northwest of bermuda. but the 75 miles per hour winds packed a wallop. ktvu reporter renee kemp now lives in bermuda and talked with her about the conditions. >> half 69 island is without power. i am in the capital of ham. because all of their utilities are underground a great deal of the capital area still has power. but most of the rest of the 67,000 people in the island are in the dark. the banks are closed tomorrow. for the first time in its history the newspaper will not print because they expected monday to be so bad. >> she told us building codes in bermuda are very strict. the buildings have concrete walls 16 inches thick. so property damage isn't expected to be too bad. so far there are no reports of any injuries or deaths. candlelight vigil tonight drew scores of people to an accident scene in san jose

county where four young people died after their car flipped into and irrigation canal. it happened at 6:00 saturday morning near tracy west of lamers road. two of the victims were a brother and a sister. bidik. >> i have a picture of them sleeping together as a child. who knew that they were going to play together, together at the end. [ laughter ] >> the other two victims were chris hoover and carol fan. the teens were celebrating their last night together before carol left for college at uc davis. there is no word yet on what caused the accident. the u.s. treasury department is looking for foreign investors to buy stock in general motors. the federal government loaned gm about $50 billion last year to help it recover from bankruptcy. the u.s. treasury owns just more than 60% of the automaker. and hopes to recoup the money by a stock offering that could come in november. gm had no comment today when asked if the negotiations are being held with chinese

automaker saic about buying shares. the treasury department released a statement yesterday saying it was looking for offshore investors. parts of a long neglected east bay creek are said to be spruced up thanks to a state grant. wild cat creek starts in the park and eventually empties into san francisco bay. the state department of water resources have given the city $1.8 million to help clean up that creek. city officials will remove culverts and add trails that could help bring back visitors to that area. re searchers say they have found a possible new treatment for adults with hard to control asthma. researchers looked at the drug sporeiva used to treat chronic lung conditions but not asthma. they found it is just as good as the asthma drug saravent at treating the disease. they spent almost $1 million of taxpayers money on this study after the maker declined to donate its medicine for the

study. workers at the san diego zoo uncovered a rare find. the fossil of a whale. last thursday construction on a zoo site revealed a large bone. and they stepped in. since then they have un earthed a 24-foot whale skeleton that's three million-year-old. they were delighted to find the ll tan intact as skulls normally separate from the rest of the bones. the fossil will go to the san diego natural history museum for more study. . >> well, we are wrapping up the last weekend of summer with a pretty unusual weather pattern. the clouds and showers and rain conditions. we still have some lingering fog and clouds in place. right now with the maps i can show you the cloud coverage is increasing. live storm tracker 2 the clouds are moving into oak bay. parts of the south and even some fog developing up in parts of the north bay. last check reporting the visibility is down to three quarters of a mile. so that could impact your visibility first thing tomorrow morning. as far as rainfall polls over the past 24 hours, you can see, in fact, here is the radar loop. not a lot of activity. you can see some measurable rainfall. vacaville is just barely

measurable. half moon bay is 3/100ths of an inch. pretty much quiet on the radar right now. clouds and drizzle across parts of the region for today. areas of fog like i showed you overnight warming up for monday. the extended forecast features a significant bounce in the numbers as we do approach the weekend. here is the satellite radar. you can see that weather system moving across northern california falling apart over the bay area. a big cloud producer for us. that system will continue to move out to the east. as a result for tomorrow scale back on the clouds for monday afternoon. and temperatures warming up a good 3-6 degrees from today's high. so a bit of a bump in the numbers for monday. by tuesday and wednesday cool things off up to 4-8 degrees. warming back up in the long range. for tomorrow morning, though, partly to mostly cloudy skies. temperatures in the low to mid- 50s. here is a forecast model at 7:00 tomorrow morning. and then into the afternoon hours mostly sunny. the eventual temperature range will be from the low 60s coastside with maybe some patchy fog into the afternoon
