about five minutes. >> it's getting busier now on the roads. westbound 80 traffic is busier approaching the mcarthur maze. also this morning's commute is okay westbound. bay bridge here at the toll plaza. 6:00, let's go back to the desk. fire crews are investigating a suspicious early morning fire at an east bay high school. the flames destroyed the cafeteria in richmond danza high school. claudine wrong hasp an update from firefighters. >> we're on the bam parking lot yards from where this fire started in california. school will be in session this morning, there's also an arson investigation underway. this all started just before 1:30 this morning when someone called 911, they saw flames coming from the back of danza high school. firefighters say when they got here, there was a lot of smoke and a lot of flames.

they believe the fire was burning for several minutes before it was spotted. they were able to put the fire out with heavy damage to the kitchen area of this cafeteria. it's when they got into the building that they got suspicious. >> after we got done, we opened everything up, ventilation was completed, we noticed there was dry chemical powder in the dining room area of the cafeteria. we found one or two discharged fire distinguishes on the building. that raised a red flag for us. we called our fire investigators, currently out here to come out and investigate the fire. >> why they were discharged, we're not -- so they believe that a white powder, the chemical powder they found inside the building was from

fire extinguishers. the big history is why and how people got in. when they got here, all the doors were locked. there was no obvious entry in and there was no one around. so certainly those are all giving them pause to say that someone was in there when they obviously weren't supposed to overnight and somehow this fire began. that's something they'll be looking into. we know there was a school event last night, a back to school night of sorts. they'll be looking at all those things. firefighters have left, but the school officials are here. the maintenance supervisor was also here. they put caution tape around the cafeteria. the cafeteria is a separate building. they'll have to work around trying to figure out how to feed the students. they'll have to bring in trucks and make sure everyone's taken care of. it'll be a different day at school today. live here at dianza high school, channel 2 news. oakland police are on the

lookout now for a gunman who vanished following an overnight standoff with swat teams. jade hernandez joining us with more on what led to the violence. >> the standoff is over but the man who was holed up inside of a home is gone. listen to police officers as they try to coax the man out, before they realize he was no longer inside. >> police barreled into the home around 1:00 this morning. the standoff began after neighbors heard gunshots. up to seven shots around 7:00 last night. the man believed to be inside refused to come outside. after hours of calling the man to give himself up. swat teams arrived to use tear gas to form the shooter out.

a neighbor told us what she could about the incident. >> me and my neighbors walked down the street earlier and someone told us there was someone in the house um, they really wouldn't say what happened, but we heard shots earlier, probably about 6:30. we heard some gunshots, probably about five shots. >> several neighbors were rushed from their homes and told to stay away until the incident was taken care of. we don't know what may have led up to the shootings, but police didn't find anyone hurt. neighbors speculate this was a domestic situation that got out of hand. police believe the man who initially fired shots is still out on the loose. so about an hour ago, officers were securing the house incase the man tried to come back to the home. reporting live in front of police headquarters this morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. there's another search in oakland for a suspect who attacked a teacher when she tried to stop him from stealing

a classroom computer. this happened yesterday afternoon. when the first grade teacher confronted the suspect, he punched her and knocked her down. he then escaped with the lap hop computer. the suspect described as african-american, 5'7" tall, weighing 140 pounds and has tattoos on his chest. a 12-year-old boy in san jose has been cited for bringing a pellet gun to school. this happened last thursday at beacon school on camden avenue. police say the school sent the boy home because he was in a fight, but they say he came back with a pellet gun and allegedly pointed it toward the school as classes were let out. the gun wasn't loaded, no one was hurt. in san francisco, police are searching for a gunman who robbed a sunglass store. it happened at the sunglass hut in the castro district on saturday, after pulling out a gun, the robber demanded employees fill a bag with sunglasses. he's described as about 6'' at

alltall 300 pounds. if you have any information, please contact san francisco police. now now 6:06. well this morning there's new activity at the former nummi auto plant in fremont. tesla, the bay area-based electric car company takes over that factory today. tesla plans to use a small part of the complex to build its model s sedan. 50 nummi employees have already been hired and plans to hire 1,000 more in the next year and a half. 4700 nummi workers lost their jobs when the plant closed in april. >> tesla won't replace all the jobs lost, but it's an exciting company. there's a lot of bus about it. we're looking forward to the first car rolling off the line. >> there won't be any celebrations today, in fact

there aren't even many signs outside indicated that tesla is now working in the old nummi plant. the giants need just one win against the san diego padres this weekend to lock up their first playoff appearance since 2003. yesterday san francisco completed a 3-game sweep against the arizona diamondbacks to inch closer to the title. they are three games ahead of the padres to just three games left. if the padres sweep this weekend's series in san francisco, there'll be a one-game playoff on monday, back down to san diego. >> that's between you and sal on all of this. but sal is keeping his emotions down and trying to focus. >> i'm a fan of both teams. i've lived here almost as much as san diego. >> at least i don't have that problem. i've lived in san francisco all

people. president obama has met at the white house with sarah shourd, the uc berkeley graduate freed by iran. the president met with shourd yesterday. the president said the u.s. will do all it can to secure the release of shane bauer and josh fattal. president obama will formally announce the departure of his chief of staff ram emanuel. alison burns joins us with the latest on the white house shake-up, how it will affect things, allison? >> good morning, pat. here on capitol hill, republicans and democrats are hoping that emanuel's departure will be a very good thing for improving relations between congress and the white house. now in less than two hours, president obama will announce that his chief of staff is leaving. the former congressman is planning to run for mayor of chicago. his bulldog style has helped

push the president's agenda, but alienated many on the hill and gop leader john boehner says he welcomes the shake-up. >> there's been no conversations, no reaching out from the white house and if in fact there's going to be a new chief of staff at the white house, i would hope it'd be someone who actually would consult with us. >> reporter: the deputy chief of staff peter roust will temporarily move into the chief of staff job. he's much more low key, say some, and connected in many circles. vice president joe biden is here in the bay area this morning for campaigning before the november election. biden will attend a fundraiser at 9:00 this morning for congressman jerry mcnerney in oakland. mcnerney is running for re-election. biden will head to southern california to attend a

fundraiser for barbara boxer. california's longest budget impasse ever is four months old. leaders are set to meet again today, trying to hammer out a budget deal. one sticking point is the governor's push for pension reform. another is corporate tax breaks that republicans want but democrats don't. governor schwarzenegger had until midnight last night to sign or veto 250 bills that are sitting on his desk. he signed several health care bills to bring the state in compliance with the new federal health care reform law. one of them creates a web-based insurance exchange. so consumers can comparison shop. two other bills prompt competition. the additional bills bar insurance companies from denying coverage to children because of pre-existing conditions. it allows young adults to stay on their parents plans until they're 26 plans. san jose will not be able to sustain its pension system.

rate rose to 5.8% of disposable income. we'll see how the market respond in the next 10 minutes or so. the san francisco business times reports office leasing in the city has ended a two-year streak for the first time since 2008. the available office space is shrinking. landlords have seen the value of their buildings drop by as much as 50% in the last two years. now a strange story to tell you about, faking the death of a young boy in the name of charity. we'll tell you why the mother of the boy calls this scam despicable. the reason an oakland police officer says he was forced to shoot and kill a family pet.

right now, traffic is looking good on bay area bridges, but there is a crash on the bay bridge, near the toll plaza in those left lanes. you can see, on left-hand side, there's a little bit of a back-up there. watch for slow traffic, no major problems once you get on the bridge. an oakland family wants police to reconsider protocol after a police officer shot and killed their dog.

an officer responded to the home after their home security alarm went off on tuesday. investigators say the family's dog, a yellow lab named gloria, charged the police officer and that the officer was forced to shoot the dog. when the family came home, they found a note from police. >> they just took the body and it was disturbing and really upsetting and we just keep going back to why kill a dog? why not a taser or mace or pepper spray or any of other other things? >> the family says gloria wasn't aggressive and say they're sharing their story to let others know the same thing could happen to them. an oakland police spokeswoman says the officer followed proper protocol. mother of a young boy with autism wants to know why someone would use him to scam money out of kind-hearted people. police in richmond have confiscated one of the donation boxes distributed all around the

east bay. this company, little boy's photo claims he's dead. it goes on to say the family needs money to bury the child in mexico. the boy is very much alive and his mother calls this scam despicable. >> who has access to my son's photo? what else do they have access to? why would they do this to a boy um, a little boy? >> police have this surveillance virginia -- video of a man in a white t-shirt picking up a box at a market last monday. it was at the store for a couple weeks. a brownie has one young bay area mother facing a very serious charge. >> reporter: an overnight fire heavily damages a high school cafeteria. we'll tell you what firefighters found that had them calling police and arson investigators.

suspicious. claudine wong joins us with more evidence left behind at the scene. >> arson investigation well underway right now. also at this hour, you have school officials though, the head custodian just arriving. trying to figure out how to get the school day back to normal. as we said the investigation is underway as people try to figure out, what causes damage and how the fire started. firefighters believe the fire was burning for several minutes before it was spotted. once they got in and around the building, they were able to find a couple things that were suspicious. they found a couple of empty fire extinguishes and a white chemical powder throughout the room. >> we noticed the dry chemical

powder was all throughout the dining area of the cafeteria. >> it looks like someone may have tried to put the fire out? >> or may have discharged the fire extinguisher in the dining room area. >> reporter: here are the questions investigators are asking this morning. how did someone get in here? was fire started accidentally or on purpose? did someone try to put it out or were the extinguishers and powder part of some kind of vandalism. that investigation is underway. in the meantime, school officials have been here uh, all morning trying to get things in place for the school day. head custodian arrived. superintendent was already on scene as well as maintenance folks here. the fire has been contained, really, just to the kitchen area where the fire started and the dining room of the cafeteria. it's a separate building from

morning. his missing 4-year-old daughter has been found safe. detectives say 28-year-old jonas peacock surrendered to police yesterday evening. he's accused of fatally shooting the girl's mother and running off with their child. san francisco has won an injunction against two street gangs in the cities valley neighborhood. it's designed to create a safety zone around the sonny dale housing project. the injunction targets 41 alleged gang members who police say are connected to homicides, robberies and drug dealing. drug agents say more than 14,000 pot plants were in a corn

field on warwood road in brentwood. agents moved in, seized plants this week. marijuana has an estimated street value of $30 million. a major drug sweep in rural mendocino county resulted in dozens of arrests. raids took place wednesday in the county's remote round valley area. the 32 arrests included seven people from seattle and eight from new york. a 19-year-old south san francisco woman is facing a child endangerment charge. a woman let her daughter eat a brownie laced with marijuana. they knew something was wrong when the child had slow speech, droopy eyelids and was acting strangely. the young mother later told

investigators it wasn't her fault because the the child grabbed the dessert before she could stop her. a milestone in the devil slide project, crews will punch through the northbound tunnel, four weeks ahead of schedule. the southbound tunnel pushed through about a week later. the tunnel opens in early 2012. those crews have spent the past three years building a tunnel to by pass the treacherous devil slide stretch of highway 1, south of pacifica. >> yeah, because uh, sal, that's been blocked many times by slides and everything. so hopefully that'll be a nice improvement. >> they're still going to keep uh, highway one open in that area or actually it's not going to be highway 1 anymore, they'll keep the road open for emergency purposes, but the tunnel's going to help. i want to show you the toll plaza, that's backed up, earlier

crash there. want to tell you about a truck fire in a moment. first we'll go to 880 north and southbound here at the coliseum. it looks pretty good in both directions. farther up the road, on or about 880 at 7, on the map, there's a truck fire, blocking two lanes. now traffic is light because it's so early, but it's there. the fire department has put the fire out. it was a big rig and it's still kind of uh, well they'll have to take it out of there. the truck is badly damaged. i'd take 580, i would take 980 to 580 to get to the bay bridge before now. 6:37. here's steve. >> we have low clouds in place, pretty good sea breeze also, all the way out to the delta. that all signals a cooler friday. the week was really hot monday, tuesday, we'll end up rather cool and carry this into the weekend. next week would be interesting. windy for a while. talking about showers, but for the weekend, low clouds and fog, also some higher clouds, now the

cooling will continue into saturday and then sunday, 60s and 70s. clouds off southern california, has produced rain. rain on the desert. we're in the northern fringe of this, working northward. the east bay, south bay and santa clara valley to the salinas valley, it's close, very close. makes me nervous any time there's a low in the neighborhood. have to keep an eye on that. temperatures though, the low clouds there in place, they've cleared the coastal hills, they're flying inland. that means cooler for across the board today. it'll be cooler by the airport. that's in town. 62 in the city. didn't change anything. they dropped yesterday, will stay there. 68 oakland and san jose from 81 to 79 san jose will have more high clouds later october 56, 62. everyone's really close on the temps. not much difference.

pipeline at its lab in virginia. the ntsb says the catastrophic failure may have started along a weld or in a weakened section of the 54-year-old pipe. they're looking at the possibility of cracks growing overtime. san francisco's police commission reportedly suspended a veteran police officer for nine months. the chronicle reports this comes more than five years after lionel sevilla was accused of trying to cover a suspect's escape. an attorney for sevilla has challenge that story. the city will need to make a few changes to be in running that could cost millions of dollars. a pedestrian bridge built over the embarcadero. part of pier 80 would be used as a helipad. the city would have to pay for necessary dredging of the bay.

supervisors will take a vote on the improvements sometime this month with supporters claiming the race will bring in more than a billion dollars. a major storm continues to drench much of the east coast this morning. some cities are getting more rain in hours than they normally get in months. we're taking a live picture right now, this is part of maryland, st. mary's county in maryland. look at that parking lot. you can see the extent of the flooding. the intense weather is the uh, the remnants of tropical storm nicole. it is washed out roads from the carolinas to maine and claimed at least five lives in north carolina, four family members were killed when the vehicle they were riding in skidded off a wet road and crashed into a ditch. another man died when his pick-up truck veered off a road and into a river. we're showing you live pictures along the east coast there, st.

cooler day today. temperatures in the city, within 20 degrees of each other on wednesday, now only a five-degree spread. diamond heights, 55. third and king. 60 degrees. moreno district as well. 60s, 70s, low to mid-80s now. san jose forecast, now two days ago, you were 95. 75 today. low clouds now, a lot of those high clouds coming up from that system. 56 to 62. temperatures, because of the cloud cover, not dropping that much, we have a lot of cloud cover. central california coast as well, up into the sierras, could wrap back around. we're mentioning that today. in the south bay, more likely than in the north bay which has to do with low clouds than sunshine. the high and low moves in. as it does, it'll pick up that fog bank. it was so shallow a couple days ago. it's impacting everyone. much cooler, also west southwest

wind about 25 to travis. the delta breeze is there. showers possible to the south, maybe even to the east later on. 50s, 60s, 70s and low 80s for many areas in the 100s just 48 hours ago. cooling continues into sunday. little change on monday. windy on tuesday. there's another recall, this time affecting some luxury cars. bmw of north america is recalling 200,000 cars because of a leak in the power steering system. the cars are from the 5, 6 and 7 series and have v8 or v12 engines. the model years are from 2002 to 2010. bmw says there are no reports, though, of accidents or injuries because of the problem. let's check in on wall street, so far pretty good day, we had uh, economic news coming out this morning. consumer spending, and uh, consumer uh, personal incomes, that is, both for august. of course, consumer spending affects about 70% of economic activity, so analysts were

following a recent disaster. those stories and more coming up on mornings on 2. >> we'll see you then. the school year is getting off to a rocky start for students in the san francisco unified school district. the examiner reports the district is short almost 3500 textbooks in various subjects. as a result, students are forced to share or go without. district officials say the state is partly to blame because it was late deciding which textbooks to use. the new ac transit bus pass is a source of frustration for many east bay families. thousands of students rely on ac transit to get to school, but the agency discontinued the old paper pass and many students who apply for the plastic clipper card a month ago are still waiting for it to arrive. in the meantime, some students are purchasing full fair tickets to get to school. let's go right back to sal, how are we doing out there? >> it's getting crowded. we'll be following for mornings

on 2. marin county, southbound 101, not too bad from nevada to san rafael. it has improved since an earlier accident. things are looking more like normal here. let's go to steve. >> we have a lot of low clouds in place. regrouped, come back, west winds, higher clouds as well, they are coming up from southern california, possibility, maybe cloudy high-based showers towards the santa clara valley, salinas valley. low to mid-80s. >> a prominent louisiana real estate broker is in the hospital this morning recovery after being lost for six days in the desert. he was found by sheriffs helicopter. he's an experienced hiker, meant to go on a day hike in joshua tree national park but took a wrong turn. rescue crews found him in a ravene about eight miles from
