>> reporter: an overnight fire has -- has firefighters suspicious here at this local high school. we'll tell you what the plans are for the school day. it's been a long, tense night in one bay area neighborhood. our ktvu news camera was there when s.w.a.t. teams moved in on an oakland home. the nummi auto plant gets a new life today. we'll tell you how in a live

report from fremont. a uc berkeley graduate free from iran meets with president obama and it proves to be a bittersweet occasion. "mornings on 2" starts now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's friday, october 1st. fire crews tell ktvu that an early-morning fire at a richmond high school is suspicious. claudine wong joins us with more on the evidence left behind at the scene and the effect of the fire on students. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, the fire investigators are working on trying to figure out the cause of this fire. in the meantime, school officials are trying to figure out how to give students here the most normal day they can. we are at the high school. behind me through that fence you can see the top portion of the cafeteria building. that's where the fire started. that's where the damage was

contained to. the kitchen area is what you are looking at right now. that is the origin of the fire. but the damage spreads in terms of smoke damage throughout that building. the arson investigation is underway this morning. this is after the first call for help came in at 1:24. firefighters say a resident spotted the fire. firefighters were just three blocks from the scene so they were on -- three blocks away so they were on scene quickly. they got here, there was heavy smoke and flames. firefighters got it out and kept it from spreading to other buildings. but once they got in, that's when they found evidence that got them suspicious. >> we noticed there was some dry chemical powder in the dining room of the cafeteria. we also found one or two charged fire extinguishers on

the -- one or two discharged tire extinguishers and that's when we called to have this fire investigated. >> reporter: they also say the building was locked when they got here. so they are still not sure how someone got in. they are not sure if the fire was started accidentally or if someone tried to put it out or if this was a case of vandalism that got more serious. those are the questions they will be asking this question. this is live here. a couple of things we've learned from officials, because the damage is contained to the building, they will be able to bring food trucks out to get them through the day. secondly, everything on this campus is kind of considered temporary. because they are building a new high school to replace this one. this building and all of these buildings were scheduled to be

demolished but we're still a few years away from that and the new campus. so they said they will probably put in a temporary new cafeteria and the new campus will be built. certainly, they say they want students to come to school today. it will be business as usual. none of the classrooms were affected but certainly they have a lot of cleanup on their hands. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. this morning, the search continues for a gunman tied to an overnight standoff in an east oakland neighborhood. [ sound of gunfire ] >> s.w.a.t. teams with flash grenades and tear gas moved in on a home on berylwood and maddox avenue around 1:00 a.m. there was no sign of the man believed to have fired several shots earlier. we spoke to one neighbor who did not want to give her last name. >> we heard some shots earlier, probably around 6:30. we heard some gunshots, probably around five shots. >> several people living in the

area were forced out of their homes for hours. the suspect is still on the loose. this is arraignment day for phillip garrido and nancy garrido. they are due in a placerville courtroom to be formally charged with kidnapping jaycee dugard and holding her captive for 18 years. today's court appearance follows their indictment earlier this week. there are reports the couple will be arraigned together. last week the judge suspended the court proceedings. that came after phillip garrido's raised questions about his mental competency to stand trial. well, president obama has met at the white house with sarah shourd. the president met with shourd yesterday along with her mother and the mothers of the two other americans still being held in an iranian prison. the white house said they wanted to personally welcome her home but also said her hum

something bittersweet because the two other hikers remain in jail in iran. governor schwarzenegger wrote on his twitter page that this shows him and his fantastic legislative unit after they took care of 772 bills. among the laws the governor i proves is one that -- approves is one that extends foster care parents to help them transfer to adulthood and he also signed health care bills to be in compliance with the new federal healthcare reform. he also vetoed bills that could have banned businesses from charging debit card fees and another bill, california turns. that's where the driver does not make a complete stop. one thing the governor has not signed is the budget. the governor and top leaders are set to meet again to try to

hammer out a budget deal. one sticking point is the governor's push for pension reform. another is corporate tax breaks that republicans want but democrats don't. 7:06. well, the electric carmaker tesla motors takes over the former nummi auto plant this morning. ktvu's jade hernandez is outside of that plant with just how many people tesla plans to hire in the coming months. >> reporter: tesla told us they would told the official unveiling later this month. and that's probably why we haven't seen any visible signs that tesla is moving in. tesla is scheduled to take over a small portion of the nummi plant today. we were able to drive by the parking lot this morning. we saw cars inside and security moved us and away and part of the reason is because tesla is officially supposed to take over the plant.

the former home of the manufacturing facility is what the facility is. 50 former nummi employees are already on tesla staff now and the company plans to hire 1,000 more. the first sedan is due to roll off the line around 2012. this will be a key supplier, they say, for building the rav- 4. there's hope the new electric sedan won't be the only car made at nummi. >> we're hoping that toyota might become a -- you know, do a joint venture and do some manufacturing there. that would be a great thing but we don't know if that will happen. >> reporter: on tesla's website you can get in on the action. you can reserve your all- electric sedan for $5,000, fully refundable. the base price of the model of

here's steve. >> well, we have a combination of things going on today. i better stay on my toes here. we have the west wind already moving in. for those of you getting ready for the day, low clouds and higher clouds and we've been talking about showers to the south, toward the santa clara valley. i draw your attention towards -- i doubt that's reaching the ground. if it is, you can always tweet me or e-mail me. it's been raining around san luis obispo, the east bay and the south bay. it will be cooler across the board. it's all associated with this low here. it's moving north. as it is, so is that cloud band. a couple of day', temperature -- days ago temperatures were 52. now. look. within 5 degrees of everybody.

chicago. emanuel will be replaced by another white house insider, senior adviser, peter rouse. still not clear if rouse will be a temporary or permanent replacement. we'll have much more on this in a live report from our washington, d.c. bureau later this hour. it is 7:15. tomorrow, meg whitman and jerry brown will try to win over latino voters in their second debate of the governor's race. the two candidates will face off at fresno state university in the first ever gubernatorial debate broadcast in spanish. the timing is interesting for whitman because of the controversy over whether or not she knowingly hired an illegal impy grant -- immigrant for her housekeeper. this could have an impact. it's possible her husband did see a letter from the immigration department about

this but he's not sure. this was after gloria allred showed the letter with a note scribbled at the bottom from whitman's husband. you can see that letter on our website. both whitman and brown have been actively woulding the latino vote. whitman's campaign has invested heavily in spanish language tv ads and both brown and whitman have set up campaign offices in latino neighborhoods. >> there's so many, you know, lovely latino but there is a lot of them and they are gonna have a big influence. >> they are a major segment of our society. so how they feel and how they vote is always going to be important. >> latinos represent 21% of registered voters here in california. >> 7:17. governor schwarzenegger has signed a bill making it easier for teenagers at risk to get counseling without their parents' permission. the bill is getting a lot of attention in the wake of a series of recent suicides by

teenagers who were tormented because they were gay. reporter sandra endo is in washington with more on the investigation into one of those incidents, the suicide of a rutgers university suicide, whose sexual encounter was broadcast on the internet. good morning, sandra. >> reporter: good morning. the latest news is the body pulled from the hudson river has been identified as 18 years old rutgers university student tyler klementi. this is a story that's gripped the nation because of teenagers just going through what they normally go through, a self- identify processed -- self- identity processed. but then you have this very microscopic view of the internet. everyone has access to the internet. it's the wild-wild west out there. so clearly a lot of the scenarios have been played out bullying, basically, against teenagers using the internet

and social media for malicious reasons. we're learning from authorities that the medical examiner's office in new york city has ruled his death a suicide by drowning and also found blunt trauma injuries because of the fall off the bridge. now, as you mentioned this all came after his roommate secretly broadcast clemente's sexual encounter in a dorm room, using a web camera that he accessed with his friend, molly wie. so those two students, we have been told, have been charged with invasion of privacy. investigators are not done with this case. they may charge them with other charges. they have to see if this was a hate crime because clemente was gay but they don't know that as of now. >> sandra, do you know -- are these two students looking at jail time possibly?

fines? what are the consequences here? >> yeah. absolutely. these charges are invasion of privacy. maybe it doesn't sound too severe but if convict, they face up to five years in prison. keep in mind if investigators charge them with a hate crime or bias crime, they will face more crime as well if convicted. this case is ongoing. it will not be wrapped up for some time. >> very serious consequences for what's being called cyber bullying. thank you, sandra, live for us in washington, d.c. a police search continues in oakland for a suspect who attacked a teacher who she stopped to -- tried to stop him from stealing a classroom computer. this happened at the university yesterday afternoon. police say when the 1st grade teacher confronted this suspect, he punched her and knocked her down, then he escaped with the laptop computer. the suspect described only as african-american, about 5'7", weighing 140 pounds.

he has tattoos on his chest. 7:20. congress just approved a $19 billion budget for nasa. so why are hundreds of workers at the space agency getting pink slips today? we're getting a new look at the pipeline at the center of that disaster in san bruno. there's also new information about the disaster. good morning. interstate 80 westbound, can you see traffic is moving along okay as you head out to the maze. you will see more slow traffic at the toll plaza and we'll tell you more about the commute.

welcome back. 7:23. this is the last day of work for 1200 nasa employees. they were part of the space shuttle program. some of the departing nasa workers have been part of the shuttle ground force since the first shuttle, "the enprice"

was being designed back in 1974. 9,000 nasa employees are expected to lose their jobs as the shuttle program shuts down next year. federal investigators have released their latest report on the pipeline disaster in san bruno. they allowed photographers to take pictures of this, this is the fractured pipeline now at the lab in virginia. the ntsb says the care failure may have started along a weld or in a weakened section of this 54-year-old pipe. investigators were also looking at corrosion and the possibility that cracks on the pipeline may have grown over time. 7:24. pg&e is still trying to figure out the exact cause of a big power outage in oakland last night. the lights went out for about 7900 customers at its peak, around 7:00. the outage was concentrated in the area along park boulevard north to interstate 580 and from lake merritt to gross center place. the lights were back on by

9:30. in san francisco, muni is putting a controversial 25 cent surcharge on hold for people who buy temporary transit passes. muni says the fee was causing confusion about the clipper card. they say the fee was only supposed to cover short-term paper tickets but some passengers viewed it as a fare hike. the vending machines will no longer charge that phoebe ginning today, according to "the chronicle." let's see if sal can use his magic to help those folks at the toll plaza? >> imagine snuck yes, -- magic? yes, i can. maybe we can make some of this traffic go away. i want to warn people at the toll plaza, even though traffic is slow now, it's likely to be slow for the giants game at

it is 7:30. fire crews are investigating a

suspicious early-morning fire at an east bay high school. the flames destroyed the cafeteria at richmond deanza high school. ktvu's claudine wong is on campus where students are now arriving for class. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, i spoke with a student and his mom. they said they are certainly upset by this fire and think about how much worse it could be. the damage is actually just contained to the cafeteria and the kitchen. you can see behind me. what you are looking now is where the kitchen sits at the cafeteria building. you can see where the -- that's almost like a second floor kind of area. we did just peek into the cafeteria. it looks fine. there is a lot of smoke damage. nobody will be going into that building today. school officials have already put caution tape around it this is aspish -- around it. this is a suspicious fire. the firefighters say they got called at 1:34 this morning

when someone spotted flames. the firefighters were pretty close from here, about three blocks away. it didn't take them long to get here and it didn't take them long to put the fire out. firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings. this cafeteria building is separate from the other classrooms that sit around it. once they got in, there were a few things that caught interest suspicion. they notic chemicals spread around the dining room. >> we noticed that dry chemical powder was all throughout the dining room area of the cafeteria. >> so it looks like someone may have tried to put the fire out? >> either that or discharged a fire extinguisher in the dining area. i don't know that's why we called rpd and our fire investigator. >> reporter: a couple of other things that raised suspicion last night, there was an open

house or back-to-school night here last night. so there were quite a few people on campus. we just talked to a mother who said she saw everybody lock up the doors. all of the building's doors were still looked when firefighters got here. they had trouble getting in. they still had to make entry. they are looking -- looking this to all of those factors here. >> they are gonna bring in food trucks to feed all of the high school students today who use that cafeteria. they said usually, they are heating things up. they are gonna bring portable kitchens out here to make sure that everybody is fed and the school day goes as normally as possible. we did go out there and we did take a look inside the cafeteria. we have video of what -- we want to show you of what the investigators were talking about, about the powder and

daughter is now safe. now, peacock is expected of shooting the child's mother on monday night and escaping with the chil more details are expected later. the oakland -- an officer responded to a home after a home security alarm went off on tuesday. investigators say the family's dog, a yellow lab named gloria, charged at the police officer and that the officer was forced to shoot the dog. but when the family came home, they found a note from police, tacked on their front door. >> they just took the body and it was disturbing. really upsetting and we just keep going back to why kill a dog? why not a taser? or mace or paper pray? >> the family claims gloria, the dog, was not aggressive. they say they are telling this story to let others know the

same thing could happen to them. a spokesperson for the oakland police department say the police officer did follow proper protocol. drug agents say an anonymous tip led them to a huge marijuana-growing operation hidden in an east bay cornfield. they say more than 14,000 pot plants were in that field. agents moved in and seized the plants this week. the marijuana has an sited street value of billion -- street value of $30 million. a rural drug bust in mendocino office has resulted in two dozen arrests. the sheriff said the 32 arrests include seven people from seattle and eight from new york. agencies, more than 11,000 pot plants, are saying. this could be a big day for the giants and their fans. the giants only need one more

win to lock up their first playoff appearance since 2003. kraig debro is joining us from at&t park. kraig, you may need to suit up and help them get that last win they need. westbound bay bridge as you come up to the toll plaza, it is backed up. again, this evening, because of the baseball game tonight you are likely to see a lot of people coming in. the game is at 7:15. you're likely to see the traffic any time after 4:30. 7:39. here's steve. >> thank you, sal. well, some interesting developments right here. low clouds have made a strong surge. we have a west wind all the way out to the delta, almost to the sacramento valley. and lo and behold live stormtracker2, clouds have been inching northward. not only do we have clouds. so far no reports of any of this rain reaching the ground, also monterey highway, 101, slay valley down towards salinas valley, maybe into the east bay. you can get some more -- some more clouds associated with this system right there. it cobs to move -- continues to

move north. this system will start to come in. but until that happens, we have low clouds coming east. there it is, right there. peninsula, east bay, more so than the north bay which is just dealing with high clouds. it will be cooler for everybody. 50s, 60s on the coast. 50s and 60s most locations say cloudy to mostly cloudy. it's the combination of the two. the lower clouds and the higher clouds. so 57 to 62 covers the spread. we'll be -- there will be showers along the spine of the sierra. if you are heading up there, watch out for things. 50 in ukiah. that's cool. 56, sacramento. fresno, cloudy at 7 -- and 72. so the low is with us today. probably about saturday as well. by sunday, this whole system comes in. we will cool down all the way into sunday. next week could be interesting because the low will had help

valley area. the injunction targets 41 alleged adult gang members would police say are connected too homicides, robberies and drug dealing. they are now barred from associationsing -- association associationing from known gang members. 7:49. a museum dedicated to john lennon in japan has closed up shop. the john lennon museum opened outside of tokyo on october 9th, two. that would have been lennon's 60th birthday. the museum left a note on its

welcome back. look at these pictures. this is part of a major storm that's making its way along the east coast across new england. really tying up traffic and a lot of new york as well. some of the east coast cities are getting more rain in hours than they normally get in months. this is part of the remnants of tropical storm nicole. it washed out records from the carolinas all the a -- roads from the carolinas all the way up to maine. at least five deaths are reported. in north carolina, five were killed when their car slid off the road and went into a ditch and another man died when his

pickup truck veered off the road and landed in a river. back here at home, a mother of a young autistic boy would like to know why people tried to scam money. this scam has the boy's photo on it and claims he's dead. it goes on to say the family needs money to bury the boy in mexico. but the boy, sid, is very much alive and his mother says this scam is despicable. >> who has access to my son's photo? what else would do they have access to? why would they do this to a little boy? >> look at this. police have surveillance video of a man in his white t-shirt picking up one of those boxes at a market last monday. that box had had been at the store for a couple of weeks. 7:5. in san francisco, there are big questions about why a proposed

the combination of the two it will be cooler. could be high-based thundershower activity. 52 to -- yes, 57 to 62, steve. that's a 5 and a 7. there you go . the low clouds, some sun but it will be breezy and cooler. 60s and 70s, and low 80s. this cooling trend will continue saturday into sunday and then it looks like the wind picks up. it could get rather windy around here. the investigation continues into a suspicious overnight fire at a bay area high school. we'll now getting an inside look at some of the damage.

the second hour of "mornings on 2" begins right now. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's friday, october 1st. well, fire crews are telling ktvu that an early- morning fire at a richmond high school is suspicious. ktvu's claudine wong joining us now with more on the effect of that fire on the students there. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: well, good morning, dave. yes, this school day just getting underway at deanza high school as parents and kids are

beginning to arrive. taking a look at the damage behind me, can you see it in the cafeteria, you are looking at $1 mel to $2 million in damage. we want to show you video we just shot of the kitchen area, where firefighters believe the fire started. they got called just before 1:30 this morning after someone spotted the flames. once they got the fire out, that's when they got suspicious if you take a look at the video you shot inside the video, you can see why. look at the floor, can you see the powder. that's a powder you get when a five extinguisher is used. we also saw fire extinguishers around the dining room. they say whoever used those, likely knows how this fire started. all of the doors were locked when firefighters arrived so it's unknown how they got in.

>> i think it's rather interesting because we were here for open house last night. we tally locked the building -- we actually watched the custodian close the building up last night. >> reporter: so this investigation is underway as arson investigators try to figure out how the fire started. in the meantime, school officials have been trying to get things in place for the school day. school will be in session today. they will have to work around the cafeteria and the school trucks. that building where the fire was won't likely be repaired. it's quite old. they are actually in the process of building a new campus right next to the old billing. so it looks like at this point, the plan is to board the building you are look at up. they have caution tape in and around the area. and then a temporary structure will have to be put up until

this new campus is finished which isn't scheduled to be done for another couple of years. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. 8:02. police are still out there looking for a gunman tied to an overnight standoff in east oakland. [ sound of gunfire ] >> now, that's a flash grenade and s.w.a.t. teams had moved in with flash grenades and tear gas at a home on berylwood avenue and maddox avenue around 1:00 a.m. after several shots fired. but there was no sign of the gunman. we did talk to one neighbor who did not want to give her last name. we heard some shots earlier, probably around 6:30. we heard probably around five shots. >> several residents in area were forced to leave their homes for several hours. that suspect, still on the loose. this is arraignment day for phillip and nancy garrido. they are due in a placerville

courtroom to be formally charged jaycee dugard and holding her departmentive for 18 years. today's court -- can'tive for 18 years -- can'tive for 18 years. there are reports that the couple may be arraigned together. governor schwarzenegger met a midnight deadline to act on undreads of bills that had been sitting on hit desk. the governor posted this photo on the twitter page. it shows him and his fantastic legislative unit after they took care of 772 bills. among the law, one is -- among the laws approved is extended to foster care parents to help foster kids transition to adulthood. the governor vetoed some bills, including one that would have banned businesses from charging debit card fees.

another would have reduced red light fines for so-called california turns. that's when a driver does not come to a complete stop. one thing the governor has not signed is the budget. this enters the fourth month today. the governor and leaders are set to meet deb today to try to hammer out a -- to meet today to try to hammer out the budget. the former nummi auto plant in fremont is getting a new life this morning. electric carmaker tesla motors will take over part of that building this morning and the company is already planning to hire workers. jade hernandez is in fremont now with all of the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning, dave. tesla has already hired 50 former nummi employees.

the lot was filled with cars. tesla officials said they will hold an official unveiling. that's probably why we haven't seen any signsty are moving in today. tesla is scheduled to take over a portion of that former nummi plant. 4700 workers lost their job when toyota closed the plant last spring. 50 former employees are already on staff and the company plans to hire 1,000 more in the next year and a half. tesla's first all electric sedan, the model-s is expected to roll off the line around mid 2012. tesla's ceo says his company will also be a key supplier toward building toyota's electric rav-4 which might be the suvs might be built at the plant. there's hope that the sedan won't be the only care made at nummi. >> it's a really good day for the next phase of the

tyler clemente jumped off a bridge after he learned that a recording of him having sex with another man was broadcast on line. his roommate and classmate are charged with an invasion of privacy. if convicted, they face five years in prison. the police search continues in oakland who attacked a school teach -- for a student who attacked a schoolteacher. police say with the teacher confronted the suspect, he punched her and knocked her down and then escaped with that laptop computer he was trying to steal. the suspect is described as african-american, about 5'7", waying 10 pounds. he has -- weighing 140 pounds. he has tattoos on his chest. a 12-year-old in san jose has been cited by police for bringing a pellet gun to school. this happened at beacon school on camden avenue. school officials had recently

sent the home home because of a fight. but they say he came back with a pellet gun and pointed it toward the school as classes were let out. that gun was not loaded. no one was hurt. san francisco's police commission has sortedly suspended an officer for nine months. this comes five years after the officer was accused of attempting to cover-up a suspect's catch. an attorney for the officer has challenged the count of the story. police are asking for help in tracking down a suspected bank robber that happened on el da me know real at the bank and trust. he's described as white, in his 0s, 40s, about 5'10" and medium build. he if you have any information or recognize the man in these pictures, you are urged to call the san mateo police.

failure may have started on a well or in a weekend part of it, of the 5-year-old pipe -- 54-year-old pipe. investigators are looking into the possibility that corrosion and cracks in the pipe may have grown over time. we have another auto recall, this time for luxury calls, bmw recalling 200,000 cars because of a leak in the power brake system. the cars are from the 5, 6, and 7 series. they got v-8 or v-12 engines. the model years are 2002 to 2010. the model year, 2003 through 2010 rolls royce phantoms are affected. there's been no reports of accidents or injuries because of this problem, bmw reports. hopefully no accidents or injuries on the reports. let's check in with sal. >> would you, b-12.

shot once in his head last friday. berkeley police now say the shooting may have been an accident. they are waiting now for the coroner's report. now the police have not released the nail of the student or the fraternity -- or the name of the student or the fraternity. but the daily cal is reporting him to be from iran. a family wants the police's policy reviewed after the police shot their dog. the family dog, a yellow lab named floor yaw, charged at the police officer and the officer was forced to shoot the dog. when the family came home, they found a note from police tacked on the front door. >> they took the body. it was disturbing and really upsitting. we keep going back to -- why kill a dog or -- why not a taser, mace, pepper spray?

any of those other things. >> and oakland police spokesperson said the officer followed proper protocol. >> drug agents say it was an tip that led them to a huge marijuana-growing operation hidden inside an east corn field. more than 14,000 plants were in that field. the agents moved in and seized all of the plants. the marijuana has an estimated value of $30 million. no word of any arrests. a major drug sweep has led to two dozen arrests. they say the raid occurred in the round valley area. the arrests are seven people from seattle and eight from new york. some of the plants were as tall as 15 feet. 8:35. a 19-year-old south san francisco woman is facing a
