noon news starts right now. good afternoon. we begin this noontime with the arrest of a parolee accused of slamming a stolen van into a freemont police officer monday. authorities took alexander diaz in custody in los angeles early this sunday and are now making aranl jments to return him to the bay area. >> reporter: a special task force arrested alexander diaz at 5:00 this morning. freemont detectives were there, they, and marshals watched him go into a home. >> he came out of that same house at 5:00. it was confirmed it was him. the officers made contact with him and took him into custody. >> reporter: diaz did not fight or have a weapon. it was the frantic two-day

investigation. a diaz is from the l.a. area so police suspected he might be there. still in freemont, diaz asked a stranger to get him a cab. the man recognized his picture from media reports and diaz told the man he was going to l.a. >> the cab company got him to a local bus company and that bus company through our investigation showed he boarded a bus for southern california. >> reporter: fremont detectives left for l.a. later that day and are already planning to bring him back soon. >> hopefully today, we have plans to bring him back monday. >> reporter: monday, police say diaz stole a van filled with flat-screen tvs. the call went out on the police radio. as he prepared to move closer, police say diaz floored it ran over the officer and pinned

him. diaz ran but 43-year-old officer brower was taken to hot with a compound fracture to hundred one of his legs. he's married with three boys and will survive his officers. in fremont, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. the good samaritan who rescued and abducted a fresno girl is still adjusting to all of the attention he's getting. claudine wong spoke with him and joins us with more on the story. >> reporter: victor perez says the rescue and his confrontation with the kidnapper is all still sinking in the unemployed construction worker said he woke up yesterday to the news of the kidnapping and then just wanted to help. as he walked out of his house, the accuser kidnapper drove by and what perez did next saved

this little girl. the rescue of this 8-year-old girl beat the odds and the statistics that said her story would end tragically. this little girl is home safe today because victor perez saw the story, saw the images of what police say were the images of the kidnapper's truck and walked out of his house at the same time. >> i stepped outside. we were talking about the incident and i saw the truck and took a second to see if it was the truck and i jumped in my truck and went after him. >> reporter: perez said he stopped gonzalez and talked to him but he said for just a moment, he thought he had had the wrong guy. >> i couldn't see the little girl yet or anything. when i pulled over, he was very polite. i said i need to ask you a question and he -- and he replied, like i don't got no time to talk. >> reporter: but something made perez stay with him and his his

persistence meant everything. >> when i approached him the second time, he got very upset and we exchanged words and the little girl happened to pop her head out. >> reporter: perez said he didn't have time to think or be scared. his focus was on the 8-year-old girl. >> for a split-second during the chase, when i confronted him, when we exchanged words but that was it. i saw the little girl and the fear went right out the window. i was telling him that's not your little girl. >> reporter: gonzalez pushed the girl out and took off. that's when perez said he stopped worried about him and grabbed the little girl and yelled for someone to call 911. she was scared. i said everybody is looking for you and that winnie the pooh sweater and something like

passing a new budget. house speaker nancy pelosi is in san francisco to promote the democratic agenda called make it in america. she appeared at the mattress factory in san francisco to recognize what she calls manufacturing excellence and success. pelosi says the company represents what es best about the city -- what's best about the city and the nation because of how they've put american the to -- americans to work. wireless technology links us in many ways. a conference bringing together, developers, startups is showcasing wireless leaps into the future. but this will be the last time san francisco will host this conference. jade hernandez joins us now from moscone to explain.

good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. next year this wireless conference will move down south. but this afternoon inside moscone west, there's still buzz about the future of wireless technology. it may just look like a huge room, but there is a message -- get ready. >> wireless can be a huge problem-solver for some of the biggest issues we're having for transportation, healthcare, energy. >> reporter: but wire hs technology hits closer to home. last year 11% of all cell phones are smartphones. >> we're finally realizing the potential for wireless. we may have $275 million subscribers of wireless out there but that's the tip of the iceberg. >> reporter: as wireless

technology changes, companies are disclosing this fact, that the -- >> if there's no issue, why make it a huge issue. >> reporter: this spat between the sponsors and the organizers mean this conference has been moved for the next two years. this year's convex runs through friday. reporting live from san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. cisco systems today unveiled a new home video communications system that turns televisions into video conferencing devices. it's called "you me telepresence." it works with existing high- definition television. this will allow the users to record their own videos to share on facebook, youtube or

via e-mail. cisco says the system will be priced at $600 and will include a monthly $25 fee. in a news conference streamed live on the internet, mark zukerburg announced knew new features. one will make it easier to download files and move them elsewhere on the internet. another will allow you to review your history of using the app. there's some rain near the bay area and some may be coming this way. our meteorologist, steve paulson, has the vehicle. it was very likely that there would be problems. >> a house fire and where there may have been fires before and

a fire destroyed a home in sunnyvale in the 1000 block of fairwood avenue. firefighters say the single- story house was being remoldled at the time.

it's still unclear what caused it. crews are investigating. they say no other homes were investigated in the blaze. and nobody was injured. investigators in the east bay are looking for the cause of an apartment fire that sent two people to the hospital. it started on on john street on rodeo. the red cross is helping six people left homeless find a place to stay. the fire caused an estimated $500,000 in damage. in oakland, fire investigators are looking into the zus of a suspicious overnight fire in the fruitvale district. it started at 11:00 on davis street. firefighters say the two-alarm fire was intensified because of fires in the home. no one was inside the home and no one was hurt. one neighbor said the home has been vang nt for a long time -- vacant for a long time and he's

concerned because of transients. >> it seemed like it was not being monitored and when something is abandoned like that it's very difficult to tell what can happen. pg&e has done an about- face. it will now provide detailed maps of gas pipelines to bay area emergency agencies. at the same time, pg&e asked the agencies not to release the maps to the public for security reasons. earlier, pg&e said the information was so sense sensitive it had to be kept secret but they changed their mind due to mounting political pressure. tom youtom amuano wants to

with coming to school. >> hoover elementary's principal said they are giving out apples today to encourage healthy eating. let's check in with steve paulson. is it still sunny? >> mostly sunny. we had some clouds but by 8:00 most of those had cleared out. there's clouds to the east and the south. other us -- over us we're in a dry area. if you are heading along 101 or along the coast around big sur you may encounter some rain. the leading edge of the clouds are getting here all associated with a very strong upper low which is in southern california producing heavy rain down in los angeles. had had some pretty good- sidessed thunderstorms in reno. also in kern county snow down to 7,000 feet.

over us we're in drier air. a lot of clouds and just the difference of about this much. we have the sunshine. there is the leading edge of that system. temperatures, 60s to 70s. everyone is close within 4 degrees. the city is 66, 70, napa, santa rosa and also san jose airport at 70 degrees. 40s up in the mountains. 67 ukiah, sacramento and only 63 fresno through the cloud cover. very heavy rain in los angeles over a week ago. the low is moving. as it moves it might pinwheel in some crowds. it's on its way out there by tomorrowing, it will be lock gone at least its on its way to nevada. as it goes to nevada thunderstorms will pick up. for us, it's sunny now but clouds to the south are slowly making their way in. for most of the day, it's temperatures in the 60s and 70s, mostly sunny.

but turning mostly cloudy to the south. the system is on its way. it's just taking its sweet time. tomorrow looks giants. game, mostly clear temperature at 60 degrees. i think we're all set for that. the conditions -- there's still a possibility of a thundershower out to the valley. the weekend looks sunny and warmer. >> thank you, steve. >> any time. we're learning that top executives at caltrain gave themself pay raises at the same time they were pushing for budget cuts. the "san jose times" report the payroll went up 14% and when benefits are added, the compensation jumped 34%. the california dmv unveiled

the newly designed driver's license this morning in sacramento. the licenses have several new features to prevent tampering fraud and counterfeiting. some of them can be felt by touch and images can be felt by ultraviolet. the dmv started issuing the new cards this week but you don't need to drad in our old driver's license -- turn in your old driver's license until the expiration date. late this morning, the giants decided who will take the mound during the first round of the playoffs.

taking a live look at wall street. numbers basically flat after a disappointing jobs report, adp said private employers cut jobs in september for. the dow is flat. the nasdaq and s&p are down slightly. toyota plans to offer rebates to help boost sales of its lexus brand. lexus had been the top-selling youngsry brand -- luxury brand but fell behind mercedes-benz after the recalls.

toyota will have rebates of $3,000. the mill county city council are getting getting complaints about panhandling. the council discussed the issue on monday and asked the staff to research the extent of the problem. the chief curator of the oakland museum is part of a uc davis process that's documenting the number of animals killed on california roadways. douglas long says he's reported more than 800 road kills in the east bay over the last several years and most were killed on highway 13 which he calls blood ally. the california road kill observation system began more than a year ago to help find ways to help reduce the problem. the san francisco giants this morning announced their starting lineup for this week's

playoff games. tim lincecum will take the mound tomorrow night. matt cain for the game and then jonathan sanchez will pitch sunday. no word whether bare remember zito -- gary zito will make the roster. san francisco now has a written proposal on what it will do if it wins the right to host the next america's cup yacht race. larry ellison's team won the cup in 2009 see they get to choose the location for 2013. all the supervisors except john avalos and one other approved the plan.
