calledden in. she was taken to the hospital. what used to be pristine greens are now a major mess at the golden gate golf course. the second time in four days it's happened. now some changes may be in store. paul chambers live in san francisco with all of the damage and the fallout tonight. paul? >> reporter: city officials say they are furious. this after vandals struck this golf course two times in less than a week. we're on the fifth green but the damage happened in the distance. over the hill is where the three greens were destroyed. that construction cost about $100,000 to repair it. since this is a city park, you, the taxpayer, will have to pay up. >> nothing good happens in this park in the middle of the night. >> reporter: in the second time -- for the second time in days the greens have been destroyed on the golf course. >> i think it's a shame

somebody would come in and drive over the course. >> and the fact they were willing to come back four nights later and do it again, they are pretty brazen. >> reporter: the golf supervisor woke up to tire tracks and ripped-up greens. hole 7 was destroyed beyond recognition. >> the number 7 green, i couldn't differentiate between where the -- it was just one big pile of dirt. >> reporter: investigators believe they used this pathway to access the golf course, a golf course where they make more than $75,000 in damage. the course's manager says they just renovated the greens just last month. but after this incident, they will have to completely tear down at least two if not all three greens. >> two of three of the freens we're gonna have to -- of the greens we're gonna have to tear

down, regrade it, bring in new sod. >> reporter: park officials say this has been a tough several months. besides the incident on the course there's damage to rosebushes and the trees. >> i sure hope they catch these people who did it and let them pay for it, the repair, because that's gonna cost a hoot of money, a lot of city -- a lot of money, a lot of city money. >> reporter: san francisco officials will increase their presence in the park and are considering closing the park earlier to avoid future incidents. the lieutenant-governor's race is heating up as today republican incumbent abel maldonado delivered his message and received surprising endorsements from essentially his rival's doorstep. >> 26% of voters recently

mayor and lieutenant-governor candidate, newsom. >> this is rather curious, considering everything that san francisco city hall has been about, he's fought against. >> reporter: according to the poll, newsom's lead dingled to -- dwindled to just a four- point lead late last month. >> patrick murphy is the chair of the political science department at theist of san francisco. >> if it's a close race, you don't give unany vote. you want to go across the state and give it your best shot. obviously you -- he had better than a shot. >> reporter: and mayor newsom told me maldonado can campaign wherever he wants. as he said, he will do the same. the mayor slated to hit a rally in southern california later this week. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. a majority of marin county supervisors say they support proposition 19 which would legalize marijuana for personal

at 5:00 a.m. authorities say they watched him go into an east l.a. home and when he came out, they arrested him. it was a tip from a bay area resident that led police believe he went to l.a. >> the cab company got him to a local bus company and that bus company through our investigation showed that he boarded a bus for southern california. >> diaz is accused of running over fremont police officer, patrick bower. the ten-year veteran suffered a major leg injury but is expected to recover fully. a little girl kidnapped in fresno is all safe and sound, thanks to a stranger who was in the right place at the right time. >> i stepped outside. we're talking about the incident. i happened to see the truck pass by and i jumped in my truck and went after him. advisoryor perez said that's -- victor perez says that's what happened and he confronted the

driver, this man here, who pushed the little girl out of the truck and took off. he was late -- later arrested and faces charges of kidnapping and assault. coming up at 5:55, the full interview of perez. a plea deal might be in the works for the defendants for holding a teenager. the judge says the trial is scheduled to go forward next week. the four defendants appeared in court this morning. three are scheduled to be back on friday. most of them are saying they can't believe how big it is. they are talking about that huge whale that washed a -- that washed ashore. it attracted quite a crowd. robert handa is live tonight to explain why. robert? >> reporter: well, frank, we're

alonthe coastline where at this hour, researchers are staking a close look -- are taking a close look at the whale. they are at the mercy of the tides. the 80-foot, 75-ton pregnant blue whale along with a fetus washed up to this cove. researchers can only get up when it is low tide. >> i literally had to step back and say oh, my gosh. this isn't real. it's just so special. it's sad and yet it's awesome. >> reporter: awesome and unique since blue whales generally migrate toward warmer climate at this time of year. >> this is the first time i've seen a blue whale wash up on the coastline in 30 years. init's incredible. >> reporter: many visitors asked the same question.

off a boat which smashed into the san francisco pier. the coast guard received the call from 11:30 from someone who spotted the man in the water from the bridge. the marine unit pulled him from the water about ten minutes later. he was wearing a life jacket and was unhurt. the -- 20 minutes later, the coast guard located it miles away crashed into the pier. there was no damage to the dock and minimal damage to the boat. homeowners in a number of states may soon get wells -- get mortgage relief now that wells fargo has offered to pay back money over what is allegedly deseptemberrive marketing -- deseptemberrive

a fire destroyed a home in sunny vail overnight. the fire department says no other homes were damaged and no one was hurt. the home was being remodeled at the time. tonight we are learning specific details on that budget agreement that top lawmakers and governor schwarzenegger agreed on last week. more than 90 days after it was supposed to be done. now that budget agreement goes

to the full state senate and assembly for a vote but will it pass? rob roth is live in sacramento tonight with more on this. rob? >> reporter: frank, right now, that budget proposal is at the printers and the stage is finally set here at the state capitol for tomorrow, when lawmakers must vote yea or nay. outside the governor's office the clock is impatiently ticking as today the budget is 98 days late, a dubious state record. the conference committee met to discuss final details of the proposed state budget. the proposal that leaders agreed upon last week. it closes a $19 billion deficit but does not raise taxes. the question is will two-thirds of the lawmakers vote for the budget. >> i would imagine we'll have two-thirds, yes. >> i'm not sure i will vote for it. i don't know that i like it. >> reporter: it calls for

officers for three years. other police departments receiving grants include san leandro, newark, pinole and pleasant hill. the grants come from the justice department's community orienting policing or cops. an investigation into a number of attacks in one apartment complex in contra costa county continue to keep residents on edge. attacks have taken place near walnut creek. three attacks happened in the summer and lead to an arrest but now there have been two more attacks and some residents say they are worryied. proposition 19 would make it legal to possess marijuana, small amounts for use. the state could generate $1.4 billion a year by taxing marijuana under his proposed

the regular cue of this 8- year-old girl beat the odds and statistics that said her story would end tragically. this little girl is home safe today because victor perez saw the story, saw the images of what police told us was the kidnapper's truck and walked out of his house at just the right time. >> i stepped outside and we are talking about the incident and i happened to see the truck pass by and -- it took a second to decide if that was the truck or not. perez said he stopped him and just for a moment -- >> he was actually -- actually

in order to produce 10 million chinook. on to our weather. it turned into a nice day. but are we talking about the nice day of rain. >> we called for a chance of showers yesterday and the day before. the showers developed but they are widely scattered. it was mostly sunny. it was one of those days where you can think how are there showers? the first thing i want to do is place this in motion. you will see the unusual direction of the shower. you will see it out in the inland bay valley. i'm gonna stop it. the clouds and the activity coming from the east. but what's happening is right here out by mount hamilton, the mountain is enhancing or has been enhancing some of these cells. we have a pretty good buildup in the last few hours.

most of this activity is widely scattered. out in the hills, some light scattered shower activity. >> not a big deal but they are out there. let's keep an eye on them the next few hours. the highs today, despite the cloud cover in the south bay, we're still up in the upper 70s. 74 in concord. it was 77 out in the livermore valley. here's the system. it's all just rotating like this. monterey county to san bernardino county, you have pretty good showers down there. i wish it would just rain. wouldn't it be nice to get .25 on a day like this that's not enough to really tip the buckets in most cities. one of the warmer spots -- i think we'll go 75, 78 tomorrow. very similar to today but take the showers out of the forecast. when you wake up tomorrow morning, temperatures will be on the cool side.

i think we'll see mid- to upper 40s in the inland bay valleys. north bay out towards fairfield and the vacaville area. forecast high of 73 in novato. 74 in napa for yours thursday. a -- in terms of temperatures, a lot like today. take the clouds and showers out. as we head into friday, saturday and sunday, temperatures start to come up a little bit. no heatwave. just a classic fall weather pattern as we go into the next 24 hours. this weather system was slightly unusual. we talked about the snow in the mountains. it was a weather winter advisory. it was sort of a nuisance system and it didn't produce anything. it did help fire danger. why more students than normal were walking to school

in fresno challenging the law. california's supreme court is expected to rule within 90 days. students across the country and here in the bay area pounded the pavement this morning for international walk to school day. hoover elementary school in oakland was one of 2500 california schools participating in the event. it's designed to get kids to -- to get kids more physically active. we talk about safety and really just encouraging parents and community members, pedestrians, to drive safe. we want the kids to be safe when coming to school. the principal at hoover elementary size they also gave out apples today to encourage healthy eating as well. there's much more news ahead. ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 is next.
