really come by some credible source. good afternoon topping our news. today marked four weeks since the deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. the disaster took eight lives and injured many others. the homes has been lowered from 37 to 35 because two houses that have been red tagged are now yellow tagged. katie has join the us now. >> reporter: good afternoon tori. if you take a look at progress out here it is remarkable. there are 35 sites that needed to be clear. work could be finished in a few days. victims say while this is an important step it does take a clean lot to give you a clean

slate. clearing away the debris doesn't take away the memories on the nightmares or fear they may never feel safe again. for days residents have woken up to the sounds of heavy construction equipment and piles on piles crews take away what has been destroyed. the work is almost done but victims say moving on will take much longer. >> and i heard this airplane. it happened to be a blue angel airplane. i just ducked in my car. any noise makes me jump. at night i wake the whole house up. what was that? my daughter is having nightmares. >> reporter: dean peterson is heading up the cleanup for the county. he gave us a tour. he too knows there is much more to this than timetables and soil samples. >> every time i come down to the site. i've been coming down for four weeks. i'm still not getting over it. it helps to look at a clean lot. i see what was there and homes

that were there. what i'm looking at, i can see the future. >> reporter: and clearing these final homesites could be the most emotional two of the nine sites yet to be cleared are homes where lives were lost. >> the crew again on any property there have been fatalities and deaths they are look at it more solemnly. >> reporter: and one month later victims say cleared or not, it's still not clear if this will ever be home again. >> the people i talk to, i would say 95% are looking at leaving. everybody is a wreck and they don't want the pipe back in. that's the main thing. if the pipe is going back in, i want out. i want to move. >> reporter: back out here live unclear mount. the city is looking at opening these streets. lit be -- it will be the most emotional.

i spoke to one victim that did not want to go on camera. who was pulling out participates. his home will be cleared today. he told me it may be silly to save pans but it's all he has left. >> thank you. today in sacramento state lawmakers plan to voten the proposed new state budget now a record 99 days late. most legislatures got their first look at the budget today. to pass the budget need to be approved by two-thirds of the assembly and two-thirds of the state senate. the vote is likely to come time this afternoon. some lawmakers have criticized what they call the budget creative accounting. it's call for delaying payments of $2 billion to public schools until next year. for suspending a corporate tax break over two years. the budget relies on the federal government giving $5.3 billion to the state which

priority. that wars, prison spending should be deprioritized. we are going to continue to take direct action to restructure the values that politicians have. >> reporter: despite the anger not as many protestors joined the protest today. so far today's action has not been filled with the rage that last november's protest had. >> we are keeping an eye on things. making sure the day proceeds safely and everybody's rights are protected. >> reporter: some professors gave their -- others held class outside their classroom or off campus. the students know the legislature is about to vote on a budget that will allocate $50 billion for k-12 education and colleges. it might be too little too late. >> it shouldn't how much your

parents make, it shouldn't matter what you live on. education is something that lives for everybody. that is the main reason we are here. >> reporter: this is a flier listing protestor demands and an open letter to students. we understand they locked down two administration buildings including california hall. you can only get inside if you can show id. the rally just started here at uc berkeley. rallies are expected to get under way at community college and at cal state east bay as well. reporting live jade hernandez. >> thank you, jade. in san francisco police chief is warning of drastic staffing losses in the future. he says a department could lose 25% of its force in the next five years due to retirement and limits on new police academy classes. it's in talks with city officials about the issue.

san francisco will get a big economic boost this week from a beefed up fleet week that starts today. the blue angels will begin their plastic flights this afternoon and perform their traditional air shows. local officials will hold disaster relief seminars. and this year there will be a large number of military vessels including a navy ship, two canadian warships more than a thousand navy sailers and 600 marines are expected to attend. for more on fleet week go to the web link section on ktvu.com. the excitement is building at at & t park where the giants kick up a their first playoff appearance in seven years. they host the atlanta braves. it's important to be careful if you're trying to buy tickets

tonight. kraig debro joins us now. >> reporter: it's not too early to come down to at & t park. something the giants have been waiting for for seven years the playoffs. the register started to ring at 10:00 a.m. this morning at the giants clubhouse store. anything with nlds or western division champion is popular. >> we have been following the giants for 100 years. my husband and i have tickets for game tonight and we will be going. >> reporter: a giants flag is hardly regulation but keeping with the spirit. >> they are going to beat the braves. braves had their time. they're like the buffalo bills. you can only get there so many times. >> reporter: these downtown construction workers were nearly unanimous in their prediction. the game is a sellout.

san francisco is now one of the priciest places in the entire nation to park your car. a new city hall report shows meter rates and fines have more than doubled in the past 15 years. the city charges between $2-

$3.50 an hour to park at a meter. the fine for parking at an expired meter is $65. >> cal train is preparing to raise fairs and cut train services part of a plan to close a $2.3 million budget deficit. the proposal calls for a 7.2% fair hike and it will cut four weekday trains from the schedule. riders were not happy. some say they would rather pay more than lose train service. >> i don't care if they raise it, but if they have to cut the service it's not good. >> the budget proposal under consideration will leave the base fair as it is but will increase zone fairs and the go pass will also increase from $140 to $155.

the valley transportation authority is counting on a jump in ridership to help avoid a budget crisis. they expect ridership to increase by 88% over the next ten years. but some say if that projection does not happen, it could lead to bigger problems down the road. in the meantime a committee is expected to recommend a plan to reduce spending by $40 million a year starting in 2012. want an easier commute? they are developing an app for that. the app is expected to provide real-time information on costs, distances, and time estimates for all forms of transportation. that includes unify trains, buses, taxi cabs, bikes, and cars. it's expected to launch some time next year. some bank customers in berkeley republic losing a -- are losing a lot of their hard-

sunday could be a little bit cooler. or about the same on saturday. temperatures we're talking about upper 60s and 70s. high pressure returns we'll see more of an offshore flow. the low clouds and fog on the decrease. temperatures this afternoon san francisco will warm you up one degree from the current 62 for an afternoon high of 64. and of course for this evening first pitch precisely at 6:37. mostly clear skies. we could have a few clouds out there. nice weather for the ball game and temperatures around 60 degrees. here's a look ahead. the five-day forecast temperaturest up a little bit into friday and saturday as you can see with those numbers. and then into next week we're going to cool things off a little bit. overall a nice quiet weather pattern. we know with fleet week and giants and no rain drops to worry about this afternoon maybe patchy fogs.

a bit of a mixed picture on wall street right now. a lot investors waiting on a big monthly report. right now the dow is currently down 19 at 10, 948 flirting with that 11,000 mark earlier today. the nasdaq is down 4.5. there was a report out today from the labor department. the number of people filing for first time unemployment benefits are 445,000. they were expecting the number going up. that number stands at 4.46 million. we'll get a new number on that tomorrow. economists say there are no signs employer are preparing to hire again. there is another report

that apple will start working on iphones that will work on verizon and sprint network. the phone will be in production next year and on the store shelves sometime next year. at & t has the contract with apple and apple was in the commenting on the latest report. more than half say they will switch from verizon to at & t if they were given that option. there were reports out today that apple finally won his battle. he bought the spanish mansion in 1983 when he was just 29 and had plans to rebuild. but a battle of the state at the house stretched across the country. today the san francisco chronicle is reporting that he finally secured the right to bulldoze the mansion. the 30 room estate has been vacant for almost a decade.
