are just getting ready to cross the street. the fans have been overwhelming some of the restaurants at at&t park. there's a lot of nervous energy in the air. a lot of people already shouting and they can't wait for the game to begin. many fans are already inside as well wearing their color, some are even sporting dark beards to try to look like bryan wilson and sergio romo. fans say they will not shave until the giants stop playing or at least until the giants stop winning. these games are sold out. many are without tickets but have come to the park any way to watch the fans. many fans have one thing on their minds and that's advancing to the world series. >> just to see the atmosphere and knowing that the giants are one step from going into the world series. >> if we could do that here, it's such an amazing surreal feeling, i would love the city of san francisco to experience that. >> reporter: some fans have been here since noon, and some

have been drinking since noon. let's just say that the atmosphere is already festive. the giants have said that they appreciate their fans. they count them as sort of a tenth man to help them cheer on during the play offs. live in san francisco, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. there is a warning for fans, stan francisco police officers will be on the look out for pickpockets. they said fans should watch their personal items very closely. we'll have officers around the perimeter of the interior, the waterways, you know we'll sals have -- we'll also have rail lines, nummi goes through there. >> some tickets are complete fakes, while others printed from an e-mail can be used only once but are sold over and over again. giants fans have been

candidates have a lot of differences and today they made those differences very clear. the two arrived in sunny vale in very different ways for the debate. able madonado formal. gavin newsom casual, speaking to employees. once inside the two made opening statements, newsom stressing the economy, maldonado ease family's migrant worker background. >> they didn't have wealth. they more than made up for it with their values. the values of integrity, honesty, trust. >> top priority for me and top priority for the lieutenant governor should be to get the economy back where it should be. >> reporter: maldonado said ab32 was a potential job killer, newsom calls it a job

finally started voting on a state budget. 99 days late. both houses are scheduled to vote on the $87.5 billion budget. and provides 1 billion more in spepding than last year. but critics say the bill pushes deficits off to next fiscal year. state leaders today admitted the bill is flawed. >> there's no such thing as a perfect budget, more over, this is a budget that reflects the compromise necessary to find a 2/3 majority. once the budget is approved it will make its way to governor arnold schwarzenegger desk for his signature. at this hour, uc berkeley students are staging a sit in as part of a day of protest over increasing fees and education cuts. some 800 students marched through campus today, many walked out of their classroom

to do so. some professors participated and even incorporated the protest into the lessons. the problem is we all just stay in our classes and do our normal thing, everybody will forget that there's still a major problem. some students complained the protest disrupted classes and critical study time for midterm exams. vandals have stolen eight bars from the bronze sculpture that was erected to memorialize the people that died. he believes the vandals wanted to sell the bronze as scrap metal. even though each is only worth about four or five dollars. piper says you can't put a price tag on the emotional value of the art work. >> it took substantial time and effort to develop the sculpture and this is like dancing on the brave of those that lost their lives. >> vandals have damaged the bars in the past but this is the first time any of them were

moved. it has now been four weeks since a natural gas line exploded in san bruno. the clean up process is on track to be completed sooner than expected, and it cannot do anything to bring some neighbors back. maureen naylor is live in san bruno tonight with the signs of progress there, maureen. >> it's been a bustling noisy day here. but it all got quiet and somber in the last five minutes. this impromptu memorial started. you see most of the people that live in this area, many of them dressed in black. to the left are crews that are working to rebuild this area and recover it. this is all part of the rebuilding process four weeks after the explosion. >> reporter: orange and black halloween decorations are going up while assessment tags

remain. >> every time i come to the site, i still can't get over it. i am looking at a clean lot, but i still see what was there. >> reporter: signs of thanks and a new sign, for sale. >> the people i have talked to, 95% are looking at leaving. >> for every roof that needs replacing, there's a resident shaken by what they lived through. >> everybody is just a mess. everybody is a wreck and they don't want the pipe back in. that's the main thing. if the pipe is going back in, i want out. i want to move. >> reporter: two weeks into the clean up, there's still charred debris to scoop up from the 35 destroyed homes. that number down from 37 because two are just considered damage. today crews worked on some of the nine yet to be cleared. this empty lot may not look like much but for this neighborhood it's a sign of a new chapter. >> it's a sign to me, because wow it's a month already. because so much has happened

within that month. >> reporter: the fiery explosion killed eight people including this mother and daughter who's home is one of the few remaining to be cleared. we want to show you another live look now, where this memorial is getting under way. speakers are getting on the back of this pickup truck and addressing the crowd, they plan to have bag pipes sing amazing grace and they are also going to present white flowers to all of the workers that are working to repair this neighborhood. the clean up should be complete on monday, which is a few days ahead of schedule. maureen naylor. the attorneys for a san jose woman accused of vandalizing more than a dozen luxury cars is seeking an mental evaluation. her attorney has asked that she be examined by a doctor to determine if she has mental

health issueless. ni's bail has been set at $3 million. she's scheduled to appear in court next month. caltrain riders will soon be paying more to ride the rails. fares will increase 25-cents each zone riders pass through. monthly employee passes will go up. it turns out even bigger cuts could be under way. we'll have that story coming up on bay area news at 7:00 on tv 36. a new report by the board of supervisors found that chicago and los angeles are one

of the cities charging more to park at a meter. pleat week begins this saturday in san francisco but signs of the annual event are already drawing attention. spectators along the embarcadero got to see the blue angels practicing. last year you may recall bad weather cancelled one blue angels show and few ships showed up. >> this is the most important week, more ships than ever. two ships from the canadian navy. our fine ships from the coast guard unit. >> reporter: the city's convention bureau says fleet week helped sell out hotels before the giants got into the

report tomorrow. the dow ended up losing 19 points, the nasdaq was up three points. freddie mac said today the interest rate on a fixed loan is 4.37%. that is the lowest rate on record. it is also down 4.3% from the previous week. mortgage rates have fallen to new lows nine times in the past 12 weeks. interest rates follow yields that have been dropping as investors predict buying up more bonds. lenders can prove they've been executing them legally. assemblyman ted loui says the problem lying with the paper work and a california judge doesn't have to approve. >> you have lots of folks in industry signing off on

documents when you have no idea what was in them. now we have the same thing happening just in a different context. >> reporter: attorney general and gubernatorial candidate jerry brown has already requested proof from three major lenders that they follow the law with their foreclosure paper work. it is giving people who are paralyzed a second chance at walking. a new device unveiled today is enabled those that have suffered debilitating injuries a new way to walk. >> reporter: the world has just changed for 150,000 paraplegics in this country, walking again is possible. paraplegic amanda boxel walked today. a skiing accident had kept her in a wheelchair for 18 years. >> and amanda, what is this like for you? >> i'm living any dream.
