. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu, channel 2 news. a san francisco salsa dancing hot spot locked up on a saturday night after gunfire forces the entertainment commission to issue a suspension. good evening, everyone. i'm mike mibach in tonight for ken wayne. >> hello again, everyone, i'm heather holmes. another shooting, another san francisco nightclub. and tonight that club is dark. shut down by authorities. ktvu's deborah villalon is live outside cafe cocoamo where the gun fight broke out had early

this morning. >> reporter: heather, hip hop last night, salsa tonight. this nightclub would normally be packed at this hour. instead it is padlocked after a man was shot and wounded inside. a 23-year-old man was rushed from the club with what police call life threatening injuries about 1:00 this morning. clearing the crowd was a challenge. and investigators are still looking for the gunman are you doing anything different tonight? >> no. >> reporter: the club was closed voluntarily he said. by evening the city entertainment commission had made that official. a 72-shower suspension. a cooling-off period. >> there is no entertainment. we don't want any kind of reprisal or anything like that. basically it's about safety. >> reporter: this commission inspector who works undercover says cafe cocoamo has a good reputation generally, besides occasional noise or crowd complaints from the neighborhood. 5 years ago a man was shot to

death and several people wounded in a dispute between groups spilling from the club at closing. but that was outside. today's shooting showed even with patrons getting pat down searches, weapons make it into clubs. >> there is no metal detectors set up but that doesn't mean they aren't using hand-held metal detectors which most nightclubs use. >> reporter: do you know if they use them here? >> i don't know currently. >> reporter: supervisor david chu after a string of deadly outbursts outside clubs of fisherman's wharf push to give the entertainment commission more teeth to stem more violence. the shutdown he says is a good sign. >> i have is suggested that if the entertainment commission can't do its job we will find another body that can do the job that is not necessarily made up with representatives from the entertainment industry. >> reporter: cafe cocoamo is a salsa hot spot offering free dance lessons to customers. some disappointed to find it closed tonight. >> it is pretty cool i like

[ music ] >> reporter: tuesday at 6 is the earlie the dance floor here can re-open. that's after a mediation session with the commission. in the meantime, though, cafe cocoamo can be open for serving food and serving alcohol and playing recorded music. just no live entertainment. no entertainment purposes. reporting live in san francisco, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> a busy street in downtown san francisco is back open tonight after an underground explosion forced police to shut it down. the explosion happened near sacramento street just after 4:00 this afternoon. pg&e said an underground cable failure caused the blast. the force of the explosion blew off a manhole cover and damaged a window at a nearby restaurant. >> at the time there was fire in there. you still had a lot of passersby coming by and sort of

looky loos looking to see what they can see. there is still smoke. in fact the smoke is not good for them. >> reporter: no injuries were reported. as of about an hour ago pg&e crews were still on the scene working to fix that damaged cable. firefighters are on the scene of a 3 alarm fire north of mckee road. it was sparked by a car accident just before 5:00 this eke -- evening. the winds pushed the flames into a field. 40 employees had to briefly evacuate a nearby factory. there have been no reports of any injuries. police tonight released a sketch resembling a man suspected of trying to lure two young girls into his vehicle. police say yesterday afternoon a man looking like this and driving a green jeep approached the 10-year-old and 5-year-old sisters as they were walking their dog. the man is described as white with a grey goatee and a missing tooth.

investigators say he threatened to shoot the girl's relatives if they didn't get in. police say he then grabbed the younger girl's shot. the older sister actually pulled her away. and the two ran home. the jeep we are told had tinted windows and a blue license plate with the letter g and number 5. >> a prisoner in iran for 14 months, sarah is back in the bay area. the 32-year-old uc berkeley graduate who was accused of being a spy said today that her incarceration was a tragedy, one that is still playing out for two others. a small backyard in oakland on this day home to a small group of people who picked up pens and paper and began to write. uc berkeley graduate sarah was one of them. >> i don't know when my life is going to be normal again. >> reporter: her fiancee and friend were arrested near the iran, iraq border in 2009 and later accused of spying. >> we were forced apart for the

first time. and we clung to each other. we linked arms and we held each other and we screamed because we didn't want to be separated. >> reporter: iran's president said she was released september 14th because of her health issues, a lump in her breast. today she said she is not sick but does need to be monitored by a doctor. consistently on her mind, though, is not her health but the others who remain in prison in iran. >> the only point of my existence is to speak for them, to be a voice for them. and to live for them every moment. >> reporter: surrounded by friends and her mother says she will be set free when the two are released. on this day this group wrote letters to them hoping that their personal thoughts on paper will give the two men confidence to continue to fight for their freedom. >> it's really time for them to come home. it's time for them to be free. it is time for them to stop suffering unnecessarily. >> shane and josh are innocent.

they have done nothing wrong. they have broken no laws. and they don't deserve to be there one minute longer than i was. >> she ended her comments with saying that she wants to study conflict resolution and be a bridge between the middle east and the united states for the rest of her life. >> there was a new push today in san francisco for the city's contentious sit wide ballot measure. mayor gavin newsom and supervisor were all there and rallied to support proposition l. well, that measure would prohibit people from sitting or laying on the city streets. critics say it unfairly targets the homeless. but the mayor argues it may force people into getting help. >> there is nothing compassionate about walking by someone who is suffering. there is nothing compassionate by just looking the other way. >> i just wanted to talk about it. >> the group also urged people to vote no. on proposition m. that measure would create more police foot

patrols but void the sit lay ordinance even if voters approve it. the san francisco waterfront is expected to be packed again tomorrow adds large crowds take in all that fleet weak has to offer from tours of massive ships to seeing the aerial acrobats known as the blue angels. >> reporter: blue angels live through the sky zooming by at 500 miles per hour, blink and you've missed them. >> the jet is coming right at you. i mean, they are like literally 500 feet away. loud and thunder, the action. everything is just great. >> from perches on boats, balconies and anywhere there was space on the street spectators jockeyed for spots to watch the action. earlier today, a parade of ships entered the bay after days at sea. >> there is nothing more extraordinary than sell before this timing the remarkable sacrifice and the incredible heroism and leadership that is

demonstrated every single day of our men and women in the services. >> reporter: with eight of the ships docked at the piers active security was tight and guards heavily armed, a reminder that for the navy the festivities surrounding fleet week is a short break from darker realities. fleet week is an opportunity to share what life in the navy is really like. >> the respect that everybody is giving is pretty go ahead. to be able to kind of get back to them and answer the questions. >> reporter: this year's celebration is decidedly larger in scope. more ships and more sailors and more focus on preparing for local disasters. they recently enlisted and shipping off in two weeks and appreciates. >> it is go ahead to see it happen. morale has deteriorated and to see it back in full swing it means a lot. >> reporter: but for many fleet week is synonymous with the

blue angels and this 16-year- old readied his camera ready to share his experience up close and personal with his friends back home. >> it will be pretty cool. i've only seen them on t.v. >> reporter: most spent the half hour the f-18 hornets were up in the air with their hearts in their throats. in san francisco, patty lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. they are so cool. well, you can find out more on fleet week along with the other events going on this weekend in the bay area by going to our website ktvu.com and clicking on the weekend extra tab. the man accused of opening fire on a bay area freeway this summer is now talking about his motivation. highway patrol officers pulled over byron williams on i580 in oakland back on july 18th. investigators say williams was wearing a bullet proof vest and armed with three guns when he began shooting at the officers. prosecutors say williams had driven to the bay area with the

intention of killing people at the tide foundation in san francisco. well, in a jailhouse interview with the watchdog group media matters williams was partly inspired by talk show host glen beck. >> he exposed it and it was on my mind that nobody does this. >> he has been highly critical of the tides foundation but has not called for acts of violence. he has pleaded not guilty to four counts of attempted murder. in sonoma county a woman was killed and three young girls were injured when the suv they were riding in rolled over. an 18-year-old boy was driving the vehicle when he crashed at 8:30 last nights. 43-year-old shelly shimel died of her injuries. the three girls ages 6, 13 and 16 suffered mod raid to major injuries. the driver was not injured. investigators say alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

in san francisco, police are searching for a hit and run driver who slammed into a car injuring three women. the incident began when police say officers tried to make a traffic stop near 17th and sanbruno. officers say the driver then sped off, crashed a few blocks away but managed to get out of the wreckage and run from the scene. police say they were not engaged in a high-speed pursuit. three women were treated at the hospital and have since been released. [ music ] being a -- after uc berkeley announced big cuts to its department some deep pocketed alumni are stepping up to the plate. what they are planning on do and why the university says they have a big challenge ahead of them. >> and the top political office, why the race for mayor is not the biggest issue during today's topic of discussion. and the birthday of a cultural icon. the tribute today for the legendary john lennon. the 10:00 news continues in 90

. uc berkeley will have baseball, basketball and gymnastics and hundreds came together on this homecoming today to say we have got our own game plan one that could include legal action. ktvu's allie rasmuss reports.

>> reporter: this pep rally wasn't about football but instead about the future of five other sports on the uc berkeley campus. >> we have made the top 40 untouchable so making news like this not very pleasant. >> reporter: the baseball player is talking about the university's decision to cut men's baseball and rugby and men's and women's gymnastics from the uc berkeley athletic department budget. >> it was a real feeling of sadness and disgust when i heard the news. >> reporter: more than 200 people gathered at the baseball field to show their support for the student these. they announced the start of a campaign to raise money from private donors to keep the it teams going. >> that comes from a lot of friends of cal baseball. a lot of us out there can help make that happen. >> but the university spokesman says it is not just a matter of the baseball team becoming self- sufficient. >> any kind of solution needs to be a package solution. it can't just be a single team. >> reporter: title 9 requires

the university to have a certain number of male and student female these. >> all for that. the women's gymnastics team and lacrosse team here. we are about supporting all of the programs here. >> reporter: but in order to sustain all five teams, the university estimates that donors would need to create an endowment of at least $80 million. >> nothing is impossible but a mighty steep hill to climb. >> she and others want their team restored and will consider taking legal action to do it. >> the last thing i would want to do is file a lawsuit because i wouldn't want to then take away from the students that are currently there. but we will take whatever is necessary, every step that is necessary. >> if fundraising and lawsuits don't work the cuts will go into effect for the 2011, 2012 school year. however, the university says it will still honor the student athlete's scholarships. in berkeley, ktvu, channel 2 news. former talk show host

montel williams is getting involved in the race for oakland mayor. he attended a fundraiser for rebecca kaplan. the two spoke of issues facing the city and also discussed the value of medical marijuana. williams has used pot to treat excruciating pain from his multiple sclerosis. >> i have smoked marijuana or used marijuana as a product in my life every day for the last ten years multiple times a day every day. the only reason why i am a tax paying member of the society and have continued to work. >> reporter: williams praised oakland as being an innovator in the national medical marijuana movement. he also urged the audience to support political leaders who believe in the value of medicinal marijuana. a doctor practicing has been placed on five years probation and can no longer prescribe pain medication. dr. dicky lynn hill wrote prescriptions without examining his patients. the group public citizen is 2

out of every 1,000 doctors faced serious disciplinary action in 2009. >> new dna evidence has led police to a man accused of killing a woman in concord park. he was arrested after she was found dead in the park but released due to a lack of have evidence. dudly who is in concord was arrested late last night and will be arraigned on murder charges next week. hundreds of people gathered today in new york city's central park to pay a musical tribute to the late john lennon. [ music ] >> the legendary singer would have turned 70 today. to mark his birthday fans from around the world visited his memorial there in strawberry fields. many of them singing his iconic songs. the former beatle was just 40- year-old when shot and killed back in 1980 in front of his

manhattan apartment. he was also honored today at a new york city concert benefitting the human rights organization amnesty incident national. mountain view based google created their own tribute to lennon they were decorated by his doodles based on his drawings. you click play there to watch the 32-second animated clip and also hear the singer's famous song "imagine." tonight concern from a top air force general about the military's withdrawal from iraq. and some skepticism about how prepared the iraqi air force will be when the deadline arrives. >> reporter: a blinding sand storm grounded mosflights at the base on a recent october morning. but crews don't take a break. and when the air clears, flights resume immediately. the air force is still moving out equipment and supplies as the ripple effect of the summer's rapid draw-down. and preparations are already in full swing for december 2011 when all american troops are supposed to leave iraq.

we are also very involved in the draw-down of the u.s. forces, the planning of that. and how we are going to transition our installations to the iraqi government and to the u.s. state department. >> reporter: meantime, fighter jets and drones fly regularly and still carry fire power. but with combat supposedly over the u.s. says the aircraft are mainly for surveillance and watching over ground troops. but the top u.s. air force priority for the next 15 months is training and equipping the new iraqi air force. >> i just can't say enough about the importance of what these americans will do with their iraqi partners between now and december of 2011. >> u.s. air force commanders say the key problem is the lack of combat jets. iraq has requested f-16s from the united states but may not reach the country until 2013. well, they have made rescue crews and their specialized drill to get out the miners. but why it may still be a few

. >> trapped underground for 60 plus days. today 338 chilean miners literally heard some good news. the sound of a drill punching down on their escape shaft 200 feet below ground. even though the moment this group of myers sees the sun remains a few days away. steve harrigan reports. >> reporter: cheers and fears as rescue crews reached the container with the miners. >> this morning at 8:05 we finally broke into the gallery.

>> with 28 inches wide. >> rescuers waived with drill bits getting through to the cavity holding the men. living inside the dark underground shelter for more than two months. >> this is too emotional for us, for the families. so much pain we've had. so much sorrow we've been through. and now the joy comes. >> reporter: officials originally thought the men would be trapped until at least christmas. workers say this is a huge victory, particularly after equipment setbacks in recent weeks. they had to push through nearly half a mile of hard rock in dangerous conditions to reach the miners. >> been here busting our butts. we have worked every day. we have fought the odds. we made it into the gallery. that's incredible. the whole place just exploded. it was great. >> but the waiting isn't over. officials say it could be several more days before the miners get out. they are deciding the safest way to bring all 33 men through the escape tunnel which is just

26 inches wide. >> they will be transported to the helicopters that will be made available to us by the chilean air force and they will be flown to the hospital. >> reporter: if the rock proves stable enough the first miners could come to the surface as early as tuesday. at the san jose mine in chile, steve harrigan fox news. >> hundred gary a reservoir wall is in danger of collapsing and could release a second wave of red toxic sludge. a crack in the concrete wall was enough to force residents to evacuate today. many escaped the area jumping into private cars, buses and trains. the northeast section of the reservoir collapsed earlier this week, accepting -- sending a wave of toxic sludge killing many and injuring more. a rare glimpse of kim jong il standing alongside his son his rumored to be his

successor. the father and son attended a ceremony marking the 65th anniversary of the communist working union parties. they danced for the senior communityist officials. this year's events come less than two weeks after his election to the party's top post. speculation continues whether he will hand over power to his son. >> and in pakistan almost 30 nato tankers were topped last night. they were parked near a restaurant. the incident comes as pakistan announced it will re-open a keyboarder crossing into afghanistan. that move ends a ten day blockade. and since the closure there have been almost daily attacks on trucks. >> a russian soyus space capsule delivered two russians and an american to the international space station today. it docked automatically using new computer technology never used in a manned russian spacecraft. when the u.s. spatial shuttle fleet is retired next year, the

soyus capsules will be the only means of transporting crew members and supplies to the space station until at least 2015. our unusually cool summer has led to the highest price of california raisins in 20 years. the raisin marketing association reached a deal yesterday to pay central valley grape growers $1500 a ton. now, that's 13% more than last year. growers say they had to ask for more money. labor costs, they say, increased due to the late harvest brought on by cooler summer weather. the new trend in dining out. we will talk about what high tech tool is helping a bay area restaurant build its business while customers get exactly what they want. >> also forget gifts. what a bay area man wanted this year for his birthday. their food. either at their desk or with friends who have also ordered ahead, thanks to specialties software serving up convenience. in san francisco, claudia cowan, fox news. there is word tonight about a possible deal between apple and verizon. to sell the iphone. citing an anonymous source close to apple the new york times reports that the new verizon iphones could hit stores as early as next year. right now iphones are only available through the at&t network. the deal could boost iphone sales as apple faces stiff competition from other phone makers operating on google's android system. apple and verizon is not commenting on the report. toyota reportedly is preparing to launch at least two new hybrid models in the united states in the year 2012. the models will be marketed under the prius name. the new versions include a sub, compact and a roomy suv type of model. the move comes after toyota announced earlier this year they would expand the line.

the automaker previously said they plan to launch a plug-in prius in 2012. owners will be able to electrically recharge the battery and drive up to 13 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in. mercedes benz is recalling 85,000 luxury cars because of steering problems. the company says drivers could lose control of the cars because of a loss of steering fluid. now, this recall affects the 2012 mercedes c class and the 2012 and 2011e class coupe as well as other models. they should take the car to have the steering column checked. dick cheney spokes in bakersfield today where he warned that terrorists could one day destroy an american city. former presidential candidate mint romney addressed the business conference.

he spoke about national security issues. >> now i think the biggest threat of all is the possibility that we will end up with terrorists at some point in the heart of one of our communities, one of our big cities armed with a nuclear weapon. >> reporter: the former vice- president has been critical of president obama's handling of the war on terror. wells fargo says it will not follow of bank of america's lead in temporarily halting for closures. wells fargo says they are confident of their own mortgage procedures and promises to work with mortgage holders to avoid foreclosures. bank of america announced this week it will temporarily stop foreclosure judgments and sales before they review their mortgage process inside all 50 states. thousands of people waited in long lines for the second day in a row at cal expo up in sacramento in a last-ditch effort to save their homes from foreclosure. the neighborhood assistance corporation of america is bringing together lenders and mortgage holders to help homeowners work out deals to keep their houses as many as

40,000 people from across the western part of the united states are expected to attend the event before it ends on tuesday. it was a birthday party with a charitable twist. ♪ happy birthday dear ♪ >> bernard boudreau celebrated his 50th birthday at the alameda food bank in oakland. instead of gifts he asked his guests to bring donations for the non-profit and also help bank food. >> i have been incredibly blessed in my life. i have never known hunger. too many people here in alameda county that hunger is an every day existence for them. >> he says he hopes to raise $10,000 for the food bank for this month from this event. and a fundraising campaign that he has launched online. for every $1 donated the food bank will be able to buy $5 worth of food from suppliers.

ktvu, channel 2 news at 5, complete bay area news coverage. . >> well, this weekend so far very nice and perfect timing with all of the activities. of course with fleet week taking place this weekend. looks like more sunshine as we head into sunday. right now the maps still tracking some fog. in fact, developing right near the immediate coastline. could be a factor first thing for sunday morning. even a few patches heading into

the bay. the clouds will be on the decrease as we head into the afternoon hours. as far as temperatures from today most areas on average about 2-5 degrees warmer than yesterday's readings. 70s for san francisco and oakland. the 80s for napa and antioch. san jose topped out at 79 degrees. the weather story is this, fair skies for tonight. nice for your sunday. the extended forecast is dry and a bit of a breeze developing especially by monday night into tuesday. that could increase the fire danger. temperatures for tomorrow from the upper 60s for the beaches. 70s around the bay. temperatures in land on track to reach the mid to upper 80s, around 8 of to 87 degrees. the weather system out here in the pacific up to the north and west. but the main energy is heading up to our north. stick with this nice weather pattern. temperatures at most areas 2-4 degrees warmer for sunday. warmest day is scheduled for tuesday. that is the day temperatures in land could be right around 90 degrees. the beach is warming up as well back up to the low to mid-60s

that. once again is for tuesday. the events happening for tomorrow see the 9ers playing at 5:20. oakland and the raiders playing during the afternoon with plenty of sunshine. temperatures close to the 70- degree mark. of course for the air show tomorrow afternoon temperatures mainly in the lower 70s right around san francisco. there could be a bit of a breeze out there with winds around 10-20 miles per hour. here we go for tomorrow morning. patchy clouds for the coast and the bay. temperatures 47 to 55 degrees. and then into the afternoon hours more sunshine. and we increase those temperatures. upper 60s all the way to the upper 80s. here is a look at the numbers. oakland tops out in the upper 70s. look at all of the 80s for livermore and antioch. san jose will go at 83. morgan hill is 87 degrees. and for san francisco there we go with the lower 70s. has ever moon bay is 68. and pacifica tops out at 67 degrees. here is a look ahead. the five day forecast. the temperatures not really changing too much inland into

monday. but begin to work things up coastside. keep an eye on the wind. there is a possibility we could have a fire weather watch that would begin monday night into tuesday. not issued just yet but something we will be watching over the next few days. those readings primarily 70s, 80s and lower 90s for tuesday. heather and mike this is the time of year you can almost count on nice weather. the weather pattern is finally behaving like it should. june, july august felt like winter out there but it is nice. >> beautiful. >> thanks, mark. >> okay. hall of fame baseball player tony gwin has been diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland. he has had surgery since 1997 to remove the glands. the last operations the doctors discovered amalignant growth. he face he faces radiation and chemotherapy. they caught it early and plans to fight it aggressively.
