. here's steve. >> good morning. thank you. skies breezy to windy for some. calm for others. very mild even in san francisco temperatures range about 65 to 72. won't take long to warm up. little of a puff east-northeast wind we go 70s, 80s and 90s. 90 in san francisco is one off a record high. we'll have some of those record highs coming up in about five minutes. here's tara. traffic flowing well making your way toward the macarthur maze. chp issued a cig alert. this is fatal accident. traffic is being diverted onto capital expressway. do expect delays. 6:01. back to the desk. we have developing news this morning in the east bay. several apartment buildings in antioch have been evacuated because of a fast moving fire. ktvu's jade hernandez is there on the scene. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. families without a place to stay this morning.

the red cross has already been called. antioch police are keeping us down the road from where the fire broke out. look at video. you can see the intense flames. even thick black smoke that greeted residents early this morning. firefighters say no one was hurt and luckily everyone was evacuated from this apartment complex where flames broke out around 3:45 this morning. this is a three alarm fire. dispatch received numerous calls about the fire. some residents reported hearing a small explosion. we can tell you, again, no one was hurt. but the damage is pretty extensive. firefighters say that the fire destroyed four apartments, heavily damaged two others and three buildings all total were effected. now as i mentioned that video shows the intensity of flames. we spoke to several people this morning. one resident who said he woke up just hearing the noises of the fire. >> i woke up to a loud like

crackling. in the middle of my apartment the other complex they've been doing construction to the roof. so the tar was on fire which was exploding and popping. >> reporter: the battalion chief told us this morning he doesn't know the cause of the fire but he said residents did report hearing the sound of small explosions. he said he saw no evidence of anything exploding inside of the apartment complex. he says a lot of times when a fire breaks out there's glass, tires that pop, anything inside of an apartment, windows popping. all of that noise is what usually wakes up neighbors and residents. that's what is reported usually when a fire is called in to dispatch. so right now fire investigators will try to determine what caused this fire. it is contained but it is not out. firefighters are still out here this morning and will continue to update. live back to the studio. thank you, jade.

time now 6:03. just a couple of hours ago the san francisco giants arrived back here in the bay area. last night they beat the atlanta braves to wrap up a thrilling playoff series. now it's onto philly for the national league championship series. ktvu's kraig debro, one of the biggest giants fans around, is live in san francisco. he has all the details. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning. i'm sure you meant not heavy wise but in terms of my level of enthusiasm. thank you. i appreciate that. giants will have a couple days off before playing the phillies. they arrived back in san francisco a couple hours ago. now i was unable to hold up the headlines. take a look at some of the banner headlines across bay area newspaper splashed with news of the team's victory. if only for this morning or just today the giants victory is big news. >> this is a dream come true just to be able to be here and experience this. i would have never thought i would be in the situation two

months ago. here we are. we all came together. it's been a fun ride and we got more business to take care of. >> reporter: okay. last night giants won when juan threw across the diamond and recorded the last out of the series. giants beat the braves 3-2 at turner field. giants won the best of five series three games to two. last two wins came in dramatic fashion. giants had to overcome men not only the crowd but of course the home field advantage and one run deficits. for some of the team the victory is a little sweet. last night's pitcher grew up as an atlanta braves fan. he's also a rookie. he had to overcome both obstacles last night. the charter arrived around 3:00 this morning after a tough game, long celebration and long flight none of the players stopped to talk to the media after getting off the bus. team president did. he stopped to talk about the team's mood on the trip home. >> everybody was really happy

your fan photos on our channel 2 website at ktvu.com. just look for the giants tab right there on the front page. about an hour from now hundreds of nurses will walk off the job for a three day strike. at this hour some of the nurses are already beginning to gather right in front of children's hospital. the patients will still be able to get care there during the strike. the hospital says it's bringing in replacement nurses to help cover all of the shifts. ktvu's claudine wong is out there right now. she's keeping an eye on the situation. claudine will have a live report coming up in the next half hour. it is now just three weeks before election day and the two candidates for governor meet in their third and final debate tonight. both are hoping to win over uncommitted voters. the most recent poll show meg whitman and jerry brown in a virtual tie. the debate is at 6:30 tonight at do min can university. one topic likely to come up is

money. ktvu has learned that meg whitman recently put another $2.5 million into her campaign for governor. she already shattered the record for personal spending on a campaign. $121million of her funding has now come out of her own pocket. campaign has spent a total of more than $140 million. now a protest is also planned outside the debate hall tonight. demonstrators representing the green party are upset that their candidate is being excluded from tonight's debate. she and other green party representatives will be there saying that limiting the debate is anti-green and anti- democratic. oakland police busy now. they arrested three suspects and searching for several more after a frightening street robbery. this happened about 9:30 last night at 35th avenue and school street. police say the gunmen fired several shots into the air after robbing their victims. luckily no one was hurt. these hold ups triggered a

massive police man hunt that included dozens of officers and helicopter. oakland police also investigating a drive by shooting where a man was shot several times and now is in critical condition. it happened about 8:00 last night on 27th avenue in the fruit vale district. so far there's no description of the suspect but the get away car may have bullet holes. a red flag fire warning is in effect for the bay area this morning because of concerns about the warm dry air and gusty winds. firefighters are on alert in higher elevations where the fire danger is most extreme. livermore for example there is a 12 member helicopter team on standby just in case a flush fire breaks nut hills. >> any time we get offshore winds if we do get multiple fire starts we're going to want extra resources here right now. we're just beefing up our resources in the bay area. >> firefighters also took

precautions in the oakland hills where similar conditions fueled a fire that destroyed 3,000 homes 19 years ago. they checked for excessive brush, branches and weeds growing too close to homes. red flag warning remains in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. time now 6:09. let's go to tara. there was a bad accident in the south bay and now the commute is messed up right? >> that's correct. if we take a look at our maps we can see red everywhere. all the folks just now starting to get out the door to try to get to work are running into a problem here on 87 northbound. it's been shut down. the cig alert has been issued because of a fatal motorcycle accident. now traffic is being diverted onto capital expressway and they are letting some folks through on the right hand shoulder next to where the accident happened. really expect some delays in this area. if we go a bit further up north we have a lot of stuff going on. a four car crash in walnut creek. 680 southbound at north mainland.

one lane blocked. also close by two cars in the center divider on 680 southbound at highway 24. looks like another fender bender just popped up there as well. definitely a lot of things going on this morning. all right. to the bay bridge toll plaza. take a look here. things starting to get backed up. very different from yesterday where we had the holiday. we expect metering lights to be going on within the next ten minutes. 6:10. here's steve. thank you very much. very good morning to you all. skies are clear. breezy for some. mainly up towards parts of so will no county and north bay. parts of the east bay and little in the higher elevation excessive heat advisories out for residents in san francisco mainly for respiratory problems for those who have that or senior citizens. that's this afternoon and also tonight highs in the upper 80s to near 90. and lows are very, very mild. i'll show you some here in just a second. unbelievable. look at that. twin peaks at 71. marina district at 68. fort mason at 66. don't get that very often.

financial district 68. outer richmond 65. but ocean beach at 70 degrees. two readings and both at 70. very rare. you can see what's going on. look at the dry air over us. there's not a cloud to be found. low humidity even right on the coast as high pressure's coming in giving us a bit of a north- northeasterly breeze. so san francisco officially sitting at 68 right now. go for a high of 90. the record is 91 back in 1976. for those of you who don't remember 1976 was a very dry year rain-wise. let's hope things don't repeat themselves. now sfo yesterday very interesting sfo had a record high of 88 degrees because they had a northwest wind. that comes over land. today a little bit more of a northeast wind. that comes over water. it will still be warm but it will be cooler. hope that make sense. they'll be 85 versus 88 yesterday. 80s 90s today warm ho to the. mt. tamalpais at 70. gill roy 57. it's rare to see a coast,

are managing a record number of foreclosures. now 40 states are expected to launch a nationwide investigation this week. the banks are accused of faulty paperwork, having employees sign thousands of foreclosure documents without reading them. the banks insist the foreclosures were justified but still some of them like bank of america, gmac and jp morgan chase are halting foreclosure proceedings while it gets sorted out. the obama administration has forced skepticism about asking banks to halt or stop foreclosures reporting most of the foreclosures are live. live from washington d.c. president obama and british prime minister david cameron agree their nations must investigate what happened during an american rescue attempt in which a captive british aid worker was killed in afghanistan. linda died when u.s. special forces were trying to rescue her on friday.

british prime minister david cameron says a preliminary investigation indicates it was a grenade thrown by an american soldier that likely killed her and not the taliban as first thought. time now 6:17. the alleged gunman in that deadly rampage at the fort hood army base in texas is due in a texas court today for a hearing on whether there's enough evidence for him to stand trial. this will be the first time the army major hasan will face his accusers. they're expected to testify about the rampage that left 13 people dead, 32 others wounded, almost a year ago. here at home a former oakland deputy police chief who was demoted last year is now being investigated a second time. the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly allowing his girlfriend to drive a police car. officials say his girlfriend crashed the unmarked car last week in napa county. before that he was demoted last may to lieutenant because of

allegations of sexual harassment. the secret service says the man who threw a book at the president recently is an overzealous author who just wanted the president to read his book. president obama was speaking at a campaign rally in pennsylvania on sunday when it happened. take a look. the man was interviewed was found to be not a threat. he will not be charged. earlier a naked man ran through the crowd. he was reportedly trying to collect a $1 million prize offered by someone to the first person to streak at an obama rally. time now 6:19. the hayward dmv will stay closed longer than expected. the department of motor vehicles on jackson street shut down for renovations in august. it was supposed to reopen last week. but officials say they don't have enough staff right now and there's no word on when they could have the money to hire more people. in the meantime dmv customers you can do your business online or just go to other dmv branches. let's check back in with

tara this morning filling in for sal. it's been quite busy in a few areas. oh, definitely has been. especially in the south bay where we had an earlier fatal accident. a motorcyclist apparently involved in this accident and it is really causing quite a back up in san jose. a lot of people have called asking when is it going to be open again. northbound 87 near curt ner avenue is still closed. but they are letting some folks trickle through on the right hand shoulder. we'll let you know when the alert has been lifted. for the most part traffic is being diverted on capital expressway. expect delays. we have our chopper en route to get a birds eye view of the area. right now head to the bay bridge toll plaza where you can see the back up really starting to take hold there. metering lights are on. give yourself a little extra time if you're making your way into san francisco from the east bay this morning. up to highway 24 you can see the back up on the right hand

side. that's westbound traffic as you're making your way to the tunnel. give yourself extra time there as well. 6:20. steve, i have to say when i stepped out this morning near the san francisco zoo it was balmy. >> i saw 72 at fort bunson. that's very warm. sometimes in summer you don't see highs that high. temperatures in the city running 60s to mid-60s. incredible temperatures. we have a red flag warning for north and east bay hills for the offshore breeze until tomorrow morning. winds are not that excessive. about 35 miles per hour. there might be an occasional gust higher. so far around 25 to 35. you can see why. look at that. there's nothing over us. no low cloud or high cloud. record highs are possible today. the city at 90. the record is 91. 1976 oakland 90. that would be three off. 94 santa rosa. that would be four off record. mountain view really warm i'll show in a second. record in san jose 90. 93 back in 1901.

high school locker room around the country. the same way a similar poster hangs in every nfl locker room. >> now the poster lists the symptoms of brain injuries from concussions and what could happen if an athlete is not diagnosed and treated. an oakland home for developmentally disabled children is now struggling to stay open this morning because of a foreclosure nightmare. terry i think ram opened the home in may but quickly fell behind on her monthly mortgage payments. she says her lender promised to give her a loan modification but three months later she found out that the company sold the home without notifying her. she and the three teenage boys she's caring for are now facing eviction. >> i don't know what to tell the kids. if we're going to be here or not. i don't know what day they're going to come knock on my door and say we have to go. >> she is fighting the eviction in court. she didn't have any comments.

welcome back to the morning news. just ringing the opening bell on wall street this morning where we are likely to see some losses. you can see on the bottom part of your screen starting out. that's after the chinese government has talked about and announced plans to further restrict the banks by requiring them to keep more in reserves. that sent stocks down in asia overnight. this morning european stocks are down.

we are expecting a lower opening. we were expecting and we do have a lower opening there this morning back down below 11,000. we'll keep watching though. all right. we'll go ahead and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. in the news right now we are following developing news in the east bay. several apartment buildings in antioch have been evacuated all because of a fast moving fire. ktvu's jade hernandez is out there with all the details. what's happening, jade? >> reporter: the good news is the fire has been contained and no one was hurt. we were able to move our cameras a little bit closer so you can see. this is the apartment complex. it's called the village of park view right here in antioch. just in the back of this gate is the apartment complex that caught fire early this morning around 3:45. when we arrived firefighters had just been told pg&e had shut off the gas going to allow firefighters the ability to get inside and find out the cause this morning. we understand seven or eight

families, firefighters weren't sure how many of the apartments were occupied, but seven or eight families are without a place to stay this morning. the red cross is assisting. we spoke to a resident who heard the noise this morning. >> we just heard loud bangs. it was somebody trying to kick doors in and then that's all i know. and we were out of our beds. >> reporter: this was a three alarm fire and dispatchers received numerous calls about it. some residents reported hearing small explosions. we can tell you no one was hurt. and the battalion chief told me he didn't see any evidence of anything exploding inside of the apartment complex. he said a lot of times when fires break out glass pops, there's a lot of popping noises which people mistake for explosions. again this is all under investigation this morning. the damage is pretty extensive. fire destroyed four apartments, heavily damaged two others and three buildings all total were effected. this video shows you the

intensity of the flames this morning. this fire broke out at 3:45. quickly grew to a three alarm fire. luckily everyone got out safely. and of course we'll have more from the battalion chief coming up. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. the giants returned home a few hours ago after taking the red eye from atlanta. their eyes may be red from all the champagne in the locker room last night. kraig debro joins us live with the story and celebrations last night and what's going on today. >> reporter: good morning. that's what it was. the champagne and late night making their eyes red. the giants arrived back in san francisco early this morning around 2:30 or 3:00. and then they came back here to at&t park fresh off their nlds victory. put together sort of a montage of newspaper headlines from different newspapers around the area. the banner headlines in several bay area newspapers splashed with the news of the team's victory. if only for this morning or just today the giants victory

is big news. >> chopper to third. the throw across in time and the giants have won the series. >> reporter: juan took over at 3rd base late in last night's game and wound up getting an assist in the last out of the game and the series. the giants beat the braves 3-2 last night at turner field in atlanta. giants wont best of five series 3-2. last two wins coming in dramatic fashion. the giants had to overcome one run deficits and a loud atlanta crowd. some of the team victory is a little sweeter. last night's winning pitcher grew up an atlanta braves fan and is a rookie. last night he had to overcome both obstacles. >> not bad for a 21-year-old rookie. >> yeah. just had to go up there and relax. that was the biggest thing just to keep -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: the giants arrived

around 3:00 this morning at sfo. after a tough game, long celebration and five hour flight, none of the players stopped to talk to the media after getting off the bus. but team president did. he stopped for a few minutes to talk about the team's mood on the trip home. >> the team's continuing resilience. it's not really surprising. but it's great. this team i don't think it's ever a surprise now with this team. they believe they can do anything and everything and they so far have been able to. >> reporter: the strict rip sends the team off to the national league championship series against the phillies of philadelphia. they beat the reds three games to none in the other nlds. the team also won the last two national league championships losing to the yankees in last year's world series and winning it all in 2008. we've been checking and it doesn't appear that the giants and phillies have ever played each other in the playoffs. certainly in the nlds. as far as we know not in the nlcs. this will be a first. the games are the first game of the series starts on saturday.

that's at 10:00 this morning. well, also this morning school will be open today at the scene of a deadly campus shooting. but school officials are assuring parents that the campus is safe. it happened last night in the parking lot following a soccer game. s saw officials say it's not student related in any way. several young men were spotted running from the scene and the victim is a man in his late 20s. 6:37. the sheriff office looking for a man who attacked a woman at a campground near the lake park. the man sexually and physically assaulted the woman at the park on sunday afternoon. investigators also say he stole $200 from the woman before escaping. described as a short obese man in his 30s. short black hair, brown eyes and a clean shaven face. seen wearing a white t-shirt,

corduroy pants and also wore a pair of work gloves. the victim told sheriff deputies the suspect spoke spanish and also bad english. and he smelled strongly of alcohol. arson investigators are looking into a series of car fires in south san francisco. three of those fires involved cared in the 100 block of mchellen drive between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m. on sunday morning. report of a dumpster fire came in about the same time right near a business a couple blocks away. if you have any information about this contact south san francisco police. right now 6:38. go back over to tara who's in for sal. fatal accident in the south bay. still causing problems right? >> oh, definitely. we can really see just how bad the traffic is getting now that the morning commute has started. these are live pictures from chopper 2. it's a little dark out there but you can see northbound 87 in san jose is

shut down but they are letting some cars through on the right hand shoulder there. you can see them trickling on through. but this is obviously causing a massive delay. northbound 87 again shut down due to an earlier fatal motorcycle accident. traffic is just crawling. you can see how extensive the back up is. most of the traffic is being diverted an to capital expressway. so if you live in this area of san jose, please be aware, try to avoid this section because this alert is still in effect and we don't know how long it will be in effect whenever there's a fatal involved we know when the coroner arrives and all of the investigators it takes quite a bit of time in order to wrap up the investigation. definitely avoid this area at all costs. all right. head back up to the north bay or little further north here. this is a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. what a difference a day makes. yesterday was columbus day. we didn't see too bad of a back up. today metering lights are on.

victims. no one was hurt. an army major hasan in the rampage at the fort hood army base is scheduled for a hearing today. he's charged with fatally shooting 13 people and wounding 32 others almost one year ago. right now nurses are gathering outside oakland's children's hospital where they are set to begin a three day strike in about 15 minutes. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is out there this morning with the details. claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. children's hospital said it is ready to serve its patients today despite the fact that 800 nurses are walking off the job. behind me you can see a couple dozen nurses getting ready to get going on this strike which officially gets underway in just about 15 minutes. temporary nurses from out of state will be crossing the picket lines over the next 15 minutes or so. so this is a bit of a transition time. the hospital has set up security check points in the hospital to make sure striking

nurses stay on public property and out of the hospital. in fact we have video of one of those check points inside the outpatient building a few minutes ago. the hospital says it's trying to make sure the 125 nurse who is are temporarily working here for the next three days will not face any kind of intimidation while they're inside the building. they're working 12 hour shifts with 40 or so leadership staff also pitching in. the hospital says it's hoping to be able to cover the work normally done by almost 800 nurses. for the next three days those nurses will be on the picket line. i have talked to both sides this morning and it's clear that there are not only differences in demands but also frustration on both sides. in the middle both sides agree are the young patients saying they are hoping for as little impact as possible on the patients and their families. >> it's not an option for us to close. so we have planned very diligently to be at near normal operations during this three day strike. what that means is we plan for a sen sis of our normal volume

somewhere between 150 and 160 parents. we've planned for emergency department to be a full operation. we've modified surgery schedule. cut it in half. >> we are very sorry for the patients and family. we do not do this lightly. this is a last resort. but if we don't take a stand on our contract issues, nurses will no longer come to work at this hospital. and it will make patient care suffer in the long run. >> reporter: they already signed in advance of this strike a line up along the building getting ready for the striking nurses. if we can come back out here live in front of the children's hospital in oakland you can see many more nurses have just joined this crowd and are getting ready to start the strike. officially underway at 7:00 this morning. we'll continue to follow the developments of the first day of this three day strike. keep you updated on mornings on 2. live here in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:48. some of the coal miners trapped

in that mine in chile for more than two months could be freed by late tonight. a rescue capsule design today bring the 33 trapped miners to safety was tested successfully yesterday. officials hope to begin the rescues today but there's a chance they're going to have to wait until at least tomorrow. after the miners are brought to the surface one by one, they'll be reunited with family members and then be flown to a hospital for very extensive medical check ups. all right. well, there are some delays in the south bay due to that earlier accident. tara's been watching. what can you tell us now? delays are pretty massive. we have the chopper up right now. a live picture from up above the scene. they are letting some cars through on the right hand shoulder. for the most part traffic is being diverted actually on to the capital expressway. we had a motorcycle versus a car earlier this morning. this was a fatal motorcycle

here comes the cool down across the board on friday, saturday. one stock to watch this morning is ibm. big blue stock hit $139.88 yesterday. an all time high. it slipped a little at the close but finished higher than previous record set back in the dot com boom. analysts say it's because businesses are upgrading. ibm services promises to cut costs. so that's helping businesses buy up ibm products. checking in on the broader markets. dow is down 88 points. it started above 11,000 but news overseas in china that the chinese government is further restricting the banks there requiring more reserves sent asian stock markets down, european markets are down, and now the u.s. is responding as well. a san francisco clothing company is getting in to public pressure. gap executives say they will withdraw that, the new logo
