we've been following all morning. several families will have to find another place to live after a fast-moving fire in the east bay. it was reported about three hours ago on generally town and buchanan -- gentry town and buchanan. jade hernandez has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: good morning. firefighters are out here. even pg&e. i just spoke to a crew. they just told us that they turned off the gas to two buildings. this fire quickly grew to a blaze around 3:45. we spoke to a woman's husband who heard explosions, what sounded like ammunition going on. they saw residents on the balcony. the contra costa county fire

department responded right away. >> we don't know what caused the fire. typically, in these buildings, they have four units that are all sort of tied together and those were all caught on fire at the same time. that's what we're dealing with. >> reporter: this fire broke out at the village of parkview apartments in antioch. the fire damage is extensive, destroying four apartments, heavily damaging three others and slightly damaging another. we're told by the battalion chief seven or eight families may be affected. firefighters did not know how many of the units were occupied. one individual said there was roof being done on -- work being done on of roof. firefighters are worried about the hot spots and making sure the fire stayed contain. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade.

7:02. well, just a couple of minutes ago, hundreds of nurses walked off the job in oakland. they are now on picture lines. take a look. this is a live picture. this is the live scene right outside children's hospital. this strike is scheduled to last about three day. now, during that time patients will still be able to get care. the hospital is bringing in replacement nurses to help cover all shifts. claudine wong is out there as well. she's keeping an eye on the situation and claudine's been talking to both sides of this labor dispute and will have more in the next half hour. well, the victorian san francisco giants came home a couple of hours ago after taking the red eye from atlanta. now they are getting ready for philly in the national league championship series. kraig debro is live with all of the details. >> reporter: it used to be if you won the regular season, you're automatically in the world series and then we had

division series play. if you win that, you're in the play. this will be the first time the giants have been in the championship play in eight years. >> a chopper to third, the throw, in time! the giants have won the series! [ cheers ] >> reporter: the throw was high and wide but not enough to keep the braves back in the game. giants beat the braves 3-2 last night at turner field. giants won the best of five series, 3-2 games.

the teacher was arrested at mckinley elementary. the police received multiple complaints from students. >> they were students who attended the school. mainly from the fourth grade but some from the sixth grade. thal gas stations were of -- the allegations were there was inappropriate touching. there's now word california will join dozens of states in

the investigation of whether they violated the foreclosure laws -- violated foreclosure laws. alison burns has more. >> reporter: the iowa attorney general's office is leading the investigation there. they will be conducting key investigations about who was involved and how the investigation will continue tomorrow. dozens of states are expected to announce a nationwide investigation into allegations that the banks had had employees sign thousands of foreclosure documents without reading them. the allegations have forced some bearables like bank of america to -- banks like bank of america to halt foreclosures. here's what that bank's ceo has to say. >> it's difficult for the homeowner. it's difficult for us as a servicer to handle this and

13 people -- killing 13 people and wounding several others. officer jeff lowman has been paid on leave after allegedly allowing his girlfriend to drive a police car. they say she crashed the unmarked car last week in napa county. before that, he was demolted last may because of allegations of sexual harassment. kamala harris is getting a major endorsement. president obama announced had his support for the d.a. calling her a strong voice for californians. she's in the race against steve cooley. poll show she's trailing by 4%. the secret service says a man who threw a book at president obama essentially was not a threat to him. instead it was an overzealous

hundreds of nurses walked off the job and are picketing

at children's hospital. claudine wong has more. >> reporter: they've certainly made plans to help care for the patients that are inside the hospital because of the 800 workers who were no -- nurses who will not be working today. there are about 125 temporary nurses to make um for the 800 who won't be showing up for work. this is a three-day strike over stalled contract talks. the last offer was made by the nurses' union on september 29th. just a couple of days later, the nurses' union informed the hospital they will be striking. the hospital has brought in 125 temporary nurses across the

country. that went to 12-hour -- they've went to 12-hour shifts to help care for the patients. the nurses' union says this is about fighting for what's right. the hospital calls this a misguided strike. >> we feel like it makes no economic sense. they are wasting the public's healthcare dollar on this strike. they are spending a lot of money rather than actually putting it towards the contract. we offered to accept a wage freeze and they've not responded to that offer. >> i find that hard to believe. it's very disappointing. we've been negotiating for five months. we have addressed many issues that were difficult to talk about. this is not a strike. it's a union that's lost touch with the current times. >> reporter: it's unclear if this strike will get anyone on

either side to move to a more common ground. we know this is a 190-bed facility. they expect it to be about 160 beds being pull in the hospital at any given time and you have the emergency room and you also have youth patient. they only have about close to 200 people to cover the shifts while these 800 nurses are on strike. but they say that will actually work out because some of these folks are part time and they do feel confident that the patients will get care. the one thing that both the nurses' union and the hospital agrees on is they don't want the patients affected, at least have them affected as little as hospital. but the families coming in and out of here, back to you. >> thank you. 7:32.

well, this morning, schools are opening today at the scene of a deadly campus shooting. but parents are being assured the campus is safe. this happened last night in the parking lot of armio high school following a soccer match. police say the shooting was not tagged to the game. they say student safety is the top priority. it's unfortunate that the event occurred. we want to assure the parents that this was not student- related in any way. >> now, officials say several young men responded running from the scene and reportedly the victim is a man in his late 20s. police search for those gunman and the investigation continues. oakland police arrested three suspects and they are out there searching for several more following a frightening street robbery. this happened last night at 35th and school street. police say the gunman fired several shots into the air after robbing their victims.

oakland police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left one man in critical condition. it happened around 8:00 last night on 27th avenue in the fruitvale district. police say the victim was not several times. they have no description of the suspect. but they are looking for a car that may have several bullet holes. a san jose fire is in the hospital after being hurt while battling a two-alarm house fire. authorities say a section of the ceiling gave way. the fire started just before 2:30 this morning. it took firefighters more than an hour to put it out. firefighters in antioch are checking for hot spots after an apartment fire this morning. it was reported after 4:00 on

gentry town drive. two apartment buildings had to be evacuated. but no one was hurt. the fire is now under control but several units were destroyed. no word yet on the cause. >> 7:34. a red flag fire warning is in effect for the bay area this morning because of warm, dry air and gusty winds. firefighters are on lay heart in the higher elevations where the fire danger is the most extreme. in livermore for example, there is a 12-member helicopter team on standby, just in case a brush fire breaks out in the hilts. the red flag warning remains in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. they won a thrilling series

against the atlanta braves where each game was decided by just one run. giants need to get ready for the fill also. they returned to at&t park on the red eye early this morning. kraig debro joins us live. >> good morning, tori. i guess all of the giants are sleep thing now, seeing as they got in very early this morning. they are play the phillies for the first time ever i think in the series. you just heard dave talk about the weather. it could an contrast. back in philly, it's getting to be winter. they arrived back here at 3:00 after getting off a bus from the airport. the team celebrated last night in atlanta and then got on the plane for a five-hour flight.

numbers on wall street are down after reports from overseas that china is moving again to limit its bank

lending. also traders are waiting -- taking kind of a cautious tone before the federal reserve releases details from the september meeting that might give a hint of any future activity by the fed. it is now just three weeks until election day and the two candidates for governor are meeting meeting in their third and final debate tonight. it's a chance for them to win over any uncommitted voters who might be tuning in. pam cook is in the newsroom with a look at ahead. >> reporter: both candidates come in with dogging of campaigns. meg whitman is under fire for how she handled the news of an undocumented hughes keeper.

the poll shows about one-fifth of the registered voters listed as unmotivated or undecide. one topic likely to come up tonight is money. ktvu has learned that meg whitman recently put another 2.5 million into her campaign for governor. she already shattered the governor for personal spending on a campaign. but she's not the only one breaking spending records. independent groups trying to influence the governor's race have spent $21 million. according to the federal fair practice, 20 million has been spent by union groups to support jerry brown and attack meg whitman. tonight's debate is critically important for both candidates to reinsure their base and then more importantly getting voters to the polls. we're out at dominican university in san rafael. would have after farer out there as well. in the next hour, i will bring you comments from the people getting ready for the debate

tonight. let's go back to dave. a big rally is planned tonight at the san francisco unified district. the group calmed united educators of san francisco claim the school district is documenting social security. the protest is at 5:30 tonight at district headquarters. big changes could be coming to university of california campuses. the board of regents is has starred reviewing recommendations from a special commission. they are suggesting that the uc find ways to help students graduate in less than four years. another possibility is raising the cap on a number of non- resident students. the state budget passed last week gives the uc system $250 billion more than last year. however, officials say expenses keep going up. which means layoff and student

fee increases may be necessary for the next school year even as more -- even as more financial aid is being found for low-income students. >> the main aingst is it hurts middle class family, umer middle-class families more than poor families, ironic as that teams. but everyone is gonna have to sacrifice. the recents could decide whether to raise student fees for the fall of 2011.

we have a wild story. these are live pictures from missouri, we're looking at this because rescue workers, you see them there. they are trying to find a man trapped in a manhole. now, the early reports say it was a construction worker who slipped out of his par necessary into a manhole and

then was swept away in the water. they are trying to find him. other workers saw him being swept i way. they called authorities. now, they are trying -- trying to find the man. they are taking off manhole covers and moving them down the line. police say they weren't sure if the worker was swept into the storm waters or into sanitary lines. but this is a bizarre situation in missouri. we're filing it over it. just wanted to give you a live picture. back here at home, arson investigators are checking into a series of car fires in south san francisco. three of the fires involve cars in the 100 block of mcclellan drive between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m. on sunday morning. police say the report of a dumpster on fire came in about that same time right near a business there. a couple of blocks away. if you have any information, contact south san francisco

firefighters had had to fight. once inside, they discovered gas leaking. all of these obstacles became problems for firefighters overnight. now, flames broke out at the victimmage of parkview apartments before 4:00 this morning. you can see the intensity i was talking about. a resident had been reroofing and he thought that might have caused flames. how far, fire investigators did not say for sure. the battalion chief could not determine for sure if something flammable sparked the flame. the fire damage was extensive. it destroyed four apartments, heavily damaged three others and slightly damaged another. one man was injured slightly. he was surprise the his dog didn't wake him up. >> i heard the sound of

gunshots right by my window. i woke up thinking there was a fight. someone's going down. i went to the back patio and i looked out and i seen flames all the way to the top. >> reporter: that man said that the red cross is helping his family find a place to stay this morning. we obtained this video from a couple. this couple noticed the fire. they live across the park from this apartment complex. and the husband came running awas the field. he tried to see what he could do to help the residents inside. once he got to the apartment complex. he said that he saw a lot of the residents on the balcony and a lot of them making their way out of the apartment complex. according to the fire department no one was hurt. everyone was evacuated this morning. seven or eight families were displaced. they don't know the exact

cause. i called the red cross this morning they are still trying to tally how many people they have to find a temporary place to stay until firefighters can see what they can do next. luckily in one seriously hurt. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. 8:07. well, the two candidates for governor, they are meeting in their third and final debate tonight in san rafael. they are hoping to sway any undecided voters who may be watching. the recent poll shows them in a virtual tie. that debate is at 6:30 tonight in san rafael. a protest is planned for the outside of the hall. democrats are angry that laura wells, right here, is being excluded from tonight's debate. wells and other green party representatives will be at the protest.

in san jose, a substitute teacher has ben arrested, accused of sexually assaulting sol of his students. 64-year-old jay kapasi of san jose worked in the franklin mckinney school district. he was arrested last week at mckinley elementary. police say they received several complaints from students. >> they were students that attended that school. mainly from the fourth grade

but some -- but some from the 6th grade. the allegations was there was inappropriate touching. >> police say he nay have substituted at other schools in the san jose school district and there may be other victims. there's now word that california will join dozens of states into an investigation into whether some of the biggest banks in the nation violated foreclosure laws. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. bureau with the latest. good morning, alison. >> reporter: good morning to you tori. the bottom line is that banks are facing intense new scrutiny in california and across the country for how they are managing the record number of foreclosures in the united states, now, 40 states are expected to launch a nationwide investigation, most likely tomorrow. the banks are accused of faulty paperwork, having employees sign thousands of foreclosure documents without reading them. the banks, including san

a new hiking trail in marin county that would bypass the home of the meatal cha man is

overbudget. the costs have climbed to about $150,000 more than had been budgeted. the county parks department says required studies are responsible for that, for at least some of it. in 2008, the man put up a fence blocking trail because he said people were damaging his property. >> well, the state of california has a deal to sell 11 state-owned buildings and then lease them back. four of those buildings are right here in the bay area. the deal is worth $2.3 billion. oakland 'harris building is among them, along with the p.u.c. building. the list also includes the judge joseph building in santa rosa. now, $1 billion from the sale will pay off bonds. the rest of the money will go to the state's general fund.

welcome back. right now, oakland children's hospital's nurses are on picket lines. they walked off the job less than two hours ago and they have started a three-day strike. ktvu's claudine wong has been keeping an eye on everything all morning and is back with all of the details.

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, things have been pretty peaceful out here. a little bit loud as the protesting continues on the picket line out here. what you are looking at is what you will see for the next three days at children's hospital. nurses picketing out of the street. these are some of the 800 who will not be showing up for work as the fight for a new contract continues. these nurses have been working without a contract since july. after five hours of negotiations there's little common ground when it comes to the cold front of healthcare for these nurses. the hospital has brought in 125 temporary nurses it from across the country and a -- and i talked to both sides. it's clear there's not only differences in demands about healthcare costs but also frustration on both said. the hospital says they are just trying to turn the corner on what's been a tough few years.

the union says its nurses shouldn't have to pay for what it calls the bad financial decision. the hospital calls it a misguided strike. the nurses union calls this strike a last resort. i call this -- i found this very hard to believe. we've been negotiating for five months. we have addressed many issues that were difficult to talk about in these five months. this is a union that's lost dutch tu of the current times. when we last negotiated, the economic conditions were different. >> i'm one of the leaders and i've work the here for over 28 years. i'm a bedside nurse. i'm not out of touch with what happens here. >> reporter: for the knicks three day -- for the next three days, the hospital is going to try to conduct business as usual. the temporary nurses have been brought in. the hospital will be up and running, although they will be

rescheduling procedures and surgery possible. as far as any new talks, none are scheduled but both sides said they are ready to go back to the table. if the other side is willing, back out here in front of children's hospital in oakland, a heart attack group of nurses, holding up signs as people have been coming by. they are also giving them leaflets to explain their position. both sides agree on one thing, they don't want this to be hard on patients and they are trying to make this as easy for the patients and their families as possible. back to you. >> thank you, claudine. a san jose firefighter is in the hospital this morning after battling a two-alarm fire fire. authorities say a section of the ceiling collapsed as the fire was being put out. the extend of the firefighters' injuries -- firefighter's injuries are not known. it took firefighters more than ap hour to put it out. investigators say the fire may have begun in the home's

garage. poofs in antioch are checking for hot spots after an apartment fire this morning. it was reported just before 4:00 on gentry town drive. several units had to be evacuated. but no one was hurt. as many as eight families are now being helped by the red cross after their home was destroyed. the fire is now under control and the cost is being investigated. 8:32. this morning, a high school in fairfield is in session even after a deadly campus shooting but parents they are being assured, the campus is safe. this hooped -- this happened last night in the parking lot of the high school following a soccer match. police say the shooting was not tied to that soccer game. school officials say students' safety is the top priority. >> it's unfortunate that the event occurred. we want to assure the parents that, again, this was into the student-related in any way. >> officials say several young men were seen running from the shooting scene and reportedly

the victim was a man in his late 20s. the police searched for the gunman and the -- and for the investigation continues. oakland police arrested three suspects and are searching for several more after a frightening street robbery. it happened around 9:30 at 35th. police say the gunman fired several shots into the air after robbing their victims. no one was hurt. the holdups triggered a massive police manhunt that included dozens of police officers and a helicopter. oakland police are also investigating a drive-by shooting that left one man in critical condition. it happened about 8:00 last night in the fruitvale district. police say the victim was shot multiple times. they have no description of the suspect but they are looking for a car that may have bullet holes. a red flag fire warning is in effect for the bay area all because of warm, drier air and gusty winds. firefighters were on alert in the higher elevations where the

fire danger is the most extreme. take a look at livermore, for example, a 12-member helicopter team is on standby just in case a briar fire breaks out in the hills. the red flag warning will stay in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. the hot temperatures -- the hot temperatures has the warning going out. this is for the sick, the elderly and very young. if you are sensitive to the -- to the heat drink a lot of water and try to stay some place where it's cool. in oakland, a new traffic signal is being activated today to improve public safety. at the corner of 64th and foothill, where 11-year-old alana williams was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver last year. she was walking to school, crossing the intersection at the -- at the time. a ceremony to activate the new traffic signal is debt for this morning. let's go back to tara.

we just learned that the rescue of 33 chilean miners trapped underground for more than two months will begin today. chile's mining minister said within the last hour that the first miner is expected to

reach the surface late today. they will be brought up one at a time. it will take about 20 minutes in a rescue tube that's only as wide as a bicycle wheel. distant relatives are turning up looking for media attention and gifts. so each miner has been asked to designate between 2001 and three people with whom they will be reunited. hurricane paula is headed to the -- to mexico's yucatan peninsula after a path of destruction through honduras. right now it's less than 200 miles southeast of can kuehl and cozumel mexico. authorities in honduras say the storm destroyed 19 homes and forced schools to close along the country's atlantic coast. 8:44. big rally tonight at the san francisco school district board

meeting. some are protesting the pension system for the aide, claiming the school has violated social security law by underfunding the retirement system. their protest begins at 5:30 tonight at district headquarters. big changes could be coming to university of california campuses. the board of regents has started to review recommendations, successing ways to find students graduate in less than four years. another possibility is raising the cap on a number of non- resident students. the state budget passed last week gives the uc system $250 billion more than last year. but officials say ther are -- say expenses keep rising which means layoffs and student hikes may be necessary even as more financial aid is being found for low income students. the main, sort of aingts is --

it hurts middle-class families, upper middle-class families, ironic as that seems. but everyone is gonna have to sacrifice. the regents could decide next month whether too raise student fees for the fall of 2011. the third and final debate between the two candidates who want to be the next governor of california, they go head to head tonight right here in the bay area. pam cook is in the newsroom, taking a look ahead at what to expect. it's getting very exciting. certainly the talk of the town as dominican university prepares for the big event tonight. >> that it wouldn't be meaningful. at least that's my view of you -- my view of it. >> we're turning the entire campuses into a classroom

that's centered around the debate between meg whitman and jerry brown. >> the university's president has been working with professors and students for weeks to participate in what they call an extraordinary educational opportunity. this gives the students a look at the democratic process first hand and also puts them on the map. all know marin is known as a heavily democrat area, they are keeping an open mind. >> i'm excited to see meg whitman's business approach to taking on california. i'm a business major so i'm looking forward to see what she has to say about that. brown has a lot of the experience and the politics and what not. >> one topic likely to come up tonight is money. ktvu has learned that meg whitman recently put another 2.5 million into her campaign for governor. she already shattered the record for personal spending on a campaign but she's not the only one breaking spending

records. independent groups trying to -- trying to influence the governor's race have also spent $21.3 million and according to the political practices commission, 20 million has been spent by union groups to support jerry brown. now, the latest polls show the candidates are in a virtual tie with about one-fifth of registered voters as either unmotivated or undecided. i'm pam cook. let's go to tori. it is 8:48. the supreme court is about too hear the first arguments today in a case that could dramatically change how patients sue vaccine manufacturers. right now, families who want to sue for vaccine injuries must first go through a special vaccine court. it was set up 24 years ago to ensure stable vaccine supplies by shielding companies from most lawsuits. the supreme court must now decide whether a family can

still sue without going through the special court. a bay area biotech company is conducting the first embryonic stem cell study on a human. menlo park's geron corporation is working with doctors in atlanta who will intent a -- dash inject a stem cell drug in a patient with a spinal cord injuries. doctors hope the treatment will grow new nerves and help restore feeling and movement into the patient. the roy research is controversial because stem cells are harvested from human embryos which some people criticize as playing god. grief counselors are standing by at san rafael's terra linda high school after the aof two teenagers in the area in the past ten days. the most recent incident happened early yesterday. it involved a 13-year-old boy who investigators say was found hanging from a tree. november apparent suicide happened monday of last week. it involved a softball girl at

tear you are linda high school. >> a lot of the time, i would contemplate suicide because -- no one accepted me really. >> in general kids feel votressed out -- stressed out because there's so much pressure to do well in communities like marin and wealthier communities. >> the teenagers are gathered -- gathered at a community meeting last night saying that he had had contemplated suicide. they say help from their counselors, teacher and arounds was the key to help them. three fires of cars are in the 100 block of mcclelland drive between 1:00 and:00 a.m. sunday morning. police say the report of a dumpster fire came in near a business a couple of weeks away. anyone with information is

asked to call the south san francisco police. eviction is looming and hope is fading for some in the east bay.

solano county sheriff's office is looking for a man who

attacked a woman at a camp grounded, deputies say the man attacked woman in a trailer at the cam. ground and stole $200 from the woman. the suspect is described as a short, obese man, in his 30s with short, black hair, brown eyes and a clean-shaven face. was seen wearing a white t- shirt, cord -- corduary pants. the wincs group was hired to oversee the building of a state of the art animal shelter but the humane society's lawsuit that they filed claims wince did not pay subcontractors and that's

northbound at ripple road. this accident seems to be causing the most pack backup although 880 northbound is also hectic as well. to an earlier accident that we had, all lanes of san jose are back open over a fatal motorcycle crash. the accident blocked traffic just south of kurtner avenue for several hours. the crash happened right before the morning rush. the identity of the person killed has not been told. on the right side, as you head towards 17, an absolute nightmare for the past two hours. 101 through san francisco, sluggish on the left-hand side there. that's northbound as you make your way toward the bay bridge. here's steve. >> thank you. snipe, warm weather, the fog is around monterey.
