good afternoon. we begin this noontime with the nurses' strike at oakland's children's hospital. almost 800 nurses walked off the job early this morning and wouldn't be back until friday. but the hospital is still open and caring for patients. ktvu's claudine wong joins us with more. good afternoon, claudine. >> reporter: good afternoon. yes. the picketing is now underway at children's hospital here in oakland. this is day one of a three-day strike. a couple of temporary nurses will hold down the fort inside until this is over. it's unclear if this will help either side find common ground. of nurses on the picket line today at children's hospital in oakland was this registered nurse. he says it isn't easy leaving patients who know you and love you. >> it's really hard. i work in the department where we're very close to the patients. >> reporter: one patient said it was strange to see ernesto roque on the line. >> yeah, it was kind of weird. i have a different first up there today. >> reporter: hers nurse, likely one of the 125 nurses brought in from out of state. extra security was also brought in and boundaries for picketers. after five months of failed negotiation, the nurses are without a contract and the battle over healthcare continues. >> nurses won't give up!

>> i'm hoping they can convince the leadership to move forward. >> there is a great amount of solidarity out here. i'm one of the leaders. i've worked here for over 28 years. i'm a bedside nurse. i'm not out of watch of what's happening here. >> i'm single, so it doesn't really affect me that much but it does affect a lot of the staff and a lot of the other nurses. >> reporter: his patient says he's glad this is only temporary. >> it will only be for about two days after this one and then i think everybody will be back to normal. >> reporter: back here live, this is a three-day strike. it's unclear if this stalemate is going to be over when the strike is over. both sides insist they have proposals on the table.

both insist they will be willing to go back to the table but at this time no new negotiations are planned. back to you. >> thank you. at the intersection of 64th avenue and foothill boulevard near frick boulevard is where alana williams was stuck and killed crossing the street to go to school. her mother and others unveiled a traffic signal during a very emotional ceremony. >> we will not be made whole until we find her killer. >> oakland police were also at the event. they say the investigation into the hit and run are still open and are streeting it as a homicide. investigators are working to see what started a fire

overnight on gentry and buchanan road. that's not far from the station. jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is all that left of the building that caught fire earlier this morning. this apartment complex has a fire department not far away. firefighters scrambleds at the flames jumped from department to department. >> we just heard loud bangs. it was something trying to kick doors in. >> reporter: a broken gas line fueled flames at this apartment building. >> i think i was like the first one out. >> reporter: this man was one of the victims of the fire.

despite a fire station a half a block away, the departments had had no -- apartments had no fire hydrant inside, forcing the firefighters to bring the hoses inside. >> tiptypically in these buildings there's four units together. they all caught on firened -- and that's what -- caught on fire and that's what we're dealing with. >> reporter: mains said they were -- neighbors heard popping. >> the red cross, they said they are gonna give us vouchers for clothes, toys for the babies and a place to stay. >> reporter: flames destroyed four amounts and severely damaged two others. the red cross is assisting those families who live inside. fire investigators say there's

school street. police say the gunman fired several shots into the air after robbing their victims. no one was hurt. the holdup triggered a massive police manhunt and included dozens of police officers and a helicopter. it is now just three weeks until election day. two candidates vying for governor are meeting in their third and final debate here tonight in the bay area. the most recent polls show meg whitman and jerry brown in a virtual tie. tara moriarty has more from the newsroom. >> whitman and brown will square off one more time tonight at 6:00 30 the -- 6:30 at the dominican university. the stage is being set as we speak in san rafael. the university president has been working with professors and students for weeks to participate in what they call

highway 87 shortly after 4:00 a.m. and blocked traffic just south of kurtner avenue for several hours. there was a huge backup but all lanes were back open around 7:00 a.m. this accident was one of five collisions this morning involving motorcyclists. a former oakland deputy police chief who was demoted last year is now being investigated for a second time. officer jeff loman has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly allowing his girlfriend to drive a police car. officials say his girlfriend crashed the car last weekend in napa county. he was demoted before this in may because of sexual harassment allegations. a san jose firefighter is in hospital after he was hurt while battling a two-alarm house fire. authorities say a section of the ceiling collapsed as the fire was being put out. the extent of the firefighter's

injuries are not known. the fire started this northerning in the 2200 block of charger drive. it took firefighters more than an hour to put it out. investigators say the fire may have begun in the home's garage. first responders in san francisco are attending a special class on how to respond to an electric car accident. chevrolet is offering the three- hour presentation with the help of n-star and the national fire protection association. the training agenda includes things like how to shut off electric power, how to cut through high-strength steel to extricate someone and the danger of a elizabeth though yum battery -- of a lithium battery. >> the goal is to become as comfortable working on these cars as regular cars. >> this is the second training session in the series that is

although it's still 85 in watsonville, maybe it's cooled off carmel and pebble, it's still going up the coast and has not taken the turn up into monterey bay. it's running into teach resistance on the -- into too much resistance on the coast. we do have clear conditions, not a cloud to be found out there. it's been sunny, mild to warm, it's getting warmer as some temperatures and the city -- now, there's some nutty temperatures. ocean beach, 83. marina district, 78. financial district 79. potrero hills, 84. outer richmond at 75. it's warm everywhere but there are some big spreads there. high pressure builds in and we get the easterly breeze. temperatures today, a little close. i dropped a city. i went from 90 to 85. it looks like there is a little hint of a breeze. the record is 93.

once we get into thursday. warm to hot records are possible. a little breezy some of the higher elevations, and the fire danger is up there. forethose of you looking for cooler weather. it's on its way. it will start on the coast tomorrow and then for thursday i think bay side and friday and saturday, we're all in on that, tori. >> that would be you and me. >> okay. >> thank you, steve. >> any time. a couple of hours ago, the obama administration lifted a six-month moratorium on deepwater oil drilling in the gulf of mexico. president obama imposed the ban after the april 20th oil rig explosion that caused the worst environmental disaster in u.s. history. the president's been under pressure to lift the ban from critics and people in the industry who say it's costing jobs and hurting the u.s. economy. federal officials say there are new rules in place that will reduce the risk of another underwater oil well blowout.

to public pressure. gap exingtives say they will -- executives say they will withdraw the new logo they unveil the just last week. the new one with the little blue box was criticizessed by gap customers. more than 2,000 negative comments were put on facebook. gap says they will ask for public input first if they ever decide to change the logo again. chilean officials are hoping the miners will start to come out today, one at a time, the four strongest miners will be brought up first and then the ten weakest. they will first be checked by doctors and then reunite thed by -- reunited by doctors.
