there. no delays to report right now. at the bay bridge toll plaza. getting backed up. we expect the metering lights to be going on in the next 20 minutes or so. here is dave and pam. we're following incredible overnight -- 11 of the 33 men that have been trapped for two months are safely aboveground. there is one of them. after coming to the surface each of them greeted with cheers, cheers, and hugs as they reunit with families and friends. the rescue operation has been incredible. with crews pulling the men to the surface one by one using that a very small capsule. it has been moving along fairly quickly though. we're already hearing from one of the miners about the experience. >> we used our miners heart. we used our experience as

miners but everything else the professionals are the ones who contributed. >> the miners are wearing protective goggles or sunglasses as you can see with concerns their eyes have been damaged with all of that time spent in the dark. after they reach the surface they are taken away from medical examination. we are also following over night news at home. investigators in fairfield trying to figure out what caused the death of young twin girls. the body was found at an apartment complex of north texas street. jade hernandez is joining us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. when firefighters responded to a fire inside of this apartment complex they had no idea what they would discover. we're live in fairfield this morning. firefighters discovered the bodies of twin girls. they have been cut or stabbed

to death. their mother was also inside the apartment. he was air lifted to john mere medical center. a sergeant with the fairfield police confirmed this morning the department is investigating this as a murder attempted suicide. they believe they died because of the cut and stab wounds they received. >> they made the initial call based on the water flow alarm. however witnesses on scene then made a subsequent call to dispatch centers saying they had a fire in the apartment. >> the apartment complex at paradise valley is located in the 3,000 black. firefighters responded to the fire. that's when they discovered the bodies. if asked if they shown any history of mental illness or

exhibiting signs of trouble at home police told us it was too early to know. the police department has scheduled a news conference to update this investigation. it's scheduled for later this morning. reporting live in fairfield. time now 6:05 in sac cavil overnight a fire ripped through two apartments. it happened before 1:30 in the area of grand view and hill view drives. not sure how the fire started. there were no injuries reported. the red cross is help displaced residents find a temporary place to live. there is reports of a peeping tom an uc berkeley campus. kraig debro just learned more. you have the details. >> reporter: yes. i just spoke to a woman on the water polo team.

she had no idea it happened. uc berkeley police have posted fliers inside the locker rooms with information about both of these incidences. the entrance to both locker rooms i did not see any signs posted there. now two occasions one happened last monday and one last wednesday. we have new information whats suspect was wearing. two separate occasions last week a man dressed as a woman was spotted inside the woman's locker room here at the sports facility. the first was monday the fourth. a custodian saw him taking pictures with a cell phone. the second was on the fifth. noticed a man disguised as a woman while she was changing clothes. the daily cal quoted the

suspect was described as wearing a white gym towel on his head to cover his jaw and mouth. he's 5'4" to 5'6". large dark sunglasses and sweat pants and short black hair described to be a wig. the director of the facility says the person is a member or got ahold of a members id. they say they can't say anything until the information officer arrived. in the meantime we'll talk to students here to get their reaction. reporting live in berkeley kraig debro. >> thank you. the third and final debate between california's two candidates for governor has both sides claiming victory. there were exchanges between the two regarding meg whitman handling of the illegal immigrant housekeeper and jabs over a sexist comment a brown campaign worker made.

there are also clear differences on the issues including whitman's plan to cut the capital gains tax. >> i would like to ask you how much money will you save if this tax breaks were in effect this year or last year? >> you know what, i'm an investigator. and investigators will benefit from this. but so will job creators and i was a job creator. >> the debate could prove crucial with the elections three weeks away. recent polls show whitman and brown are in a statistical dead heat. third party candidates were not allowed to take part in the debate. that included laura wells that showed outside to protest. >> when the independent parties are not at the table, california is not at the table. >> wells was eventually taken away by security with her supporters left behind. the protestors and debates

forced road closures around the campus. recent polls show 20% of the voters are listed as unmotivated or undecided. today is a spare the air day. remember that because of hot temperatures and light winds if you can avoid driving and use mass transit. this is the bay area's tenth spare the air alert this year. we're following breaking news. fire crews are at the scene of a small grass fire. it's near the intersection of redwood and pine hurste. firefighters again remind us the fire danger is very high on this very hot and windy day. there is an example. definitely. tara is in for sal. she say there is is a traffic hazard in dublin. >> yes, we have a truck stuck in the center divider because it has a blown out tire.

northeast. south, southwest. there is still gusts around 25. some of the higher elevations are still getting 20-25. the red flag warning ended at 6:00. even though the fire danger is high it's not as high. temperatures in the city alone anywhere from 53-68. that 53 i saw two readings ocean beach. a big drop for some. for others mid 60s to upper 60s. i will go officially 80 in the city. they were 89 yesterday. there could be a 15-20-degree spread. by 3:00 the sea breeze should be kicking in. inland it doesn't matter. there is a lot of fog moving up the coast. the reason why i'm cooling down napa the low is 49. last year at this time it was

news. you are taking a look at the very latest miner rescued in chile. we have been watching this where the rescue continues. they have been trapped under ground for more than two months. we believe this is the 12th man just pulled to safety. they are bringing -- they are brought up to the surface in a very small case. they are from a half mile below the earth's surface. we are now getting word the initial medical exam shows the men are in relatively good shape. again live pictures in chile they just pulled the 12th miner up to safety. >> incredible. we see it but it's still hard to believe. we'll get back to this as the morning goes on. time now 6:15. there is a surprising analysis who is donating big money to the candidates in the elections. alison burns is live to tell us who is giving the most money and how much is going to local

politicians. good morning alison. >> reporter: it is retire res on track to donate more -- it is retirees on track now to donate more. most of the money is going to republican candidates. retirees are donating a whopping $98 million in political contributions to national races this election cycle. we targeted the local races in the report from the nonpartisan website open secrets.org. we saw that barbara boxer gets the most money $632,000. her challenger carly fiorina brought in slightly less $448,000. >> to say they are a big force in this election cycle is a not. they have the money and time.

>> reporter: barbara boxer ranks number seven in nation- wide from retirees. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. time gnaw 6:17 new quos this morning -- new questions this morning after a deep water drilling ban was lifted by president obama. it's not clear yet when the jobs that have been put on hold will be coming back. the drilling will not resume for a couple of weeks. 8-12,000 jobs were lost during the moratorium that was put into place after the bp oil disaster. new rules have been adopted to reduce the risk of a drilling accident. san matai owe county is apologizing to hundreds. the office of emergency services was trying to send out a message about an upcoming city council meeting.

instead the message used during last months pipeline disaster was sent. the city council has voted to fast track the permit for people to rebuild that reare also waiving the permit fees. san francisco giants presented checks totaling almost $120,000 for the fund. >> we are here to lend support as you work to heal, recover and rebuild. we hope that this money will assist you in doing that. >> san bruno officials says money keep coming in they say an independent administrator will distribute the funds. time now 6:19 let's get you to where you need to go. tara, how is the commute going? >> this just popped up on the screen here we have a vegetation fire going in castro

marina district 58 degrees. inland that is a big area of high pressure. fog coast warm to hot inland. there are really, really cool temperatures. santa rosa 46. for some it's a chilly morning. 50s and 60s. gill roy 65. the ridge building and giving us one more hot day inland. it will move off and start a cooling trend. not today. for some yes. the city could go anywhere from 59-82. i'm just penciling in 80. 92 concord. 90 san jose. napa is sitting at 50. they have to warm up 40 degrees without the wind. that will be a tall order. fog warm. cooler by friday. dave and pam. >> 621 is it time this morning the federal government released the prices for imports dropped three tenths of a percent last

month. orphreys for food, clothing, and industrial supplies all rose. the price for exports rose six tenths of a percent. mostly for increases in metals. today the environmental protection agency is expected to announce its approval for a higher concentration of ethanol. right now it has only improved a 10% increase of ethanol. but there are reports that the latest tests show that the cars built in 2007 can handle a 16% mix. you will be seeing new community ambassadors on the street in one part of oakland. the neighborhood that is being targeted in an effort to reduce crime. calling a taxi will include rides on the bay. your commute is looking good on the golden gate bridge. we'll have an update on an accident for you in the south bay straight ahead.

morning to you. thank you for joining us. it is wednesday october 13th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning pam cook. we are still following tragic news. ktvu jade hernandez joining us. she's in fairfield now with the latest on what happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. fairfield police will be holding a press conference this morning to update us on this information. investigators are still inside the apartment complex. they are pulling out evidence. at this point they say a mother is responsible for the death of her twin three-year-old girls. we're live in fairfield this morning in front of the summit at paradise valley. now initially firefighters were called out here because of a fire. when they responded they had no idea what they would discover inside the burning department.

inside the complex. the bodies of three-year-old twin girl. they have been cut or stabbed to death. the mother was also inside the apartment. she too had stab wounds. she was air lifted to john mayer medical center. the mother is expected to survive. a sergeant with the police department confirmed this morning that the department is investigating this is a murder attempted suicide. they believe the twins died as a result of their stab wounds not the fire. >> when they responded they found a fire in one of the apartments. fire department made entry and discovered two minor children deceased and an assault female suffering from injuries not sustained from the fire. they appear to be self- inflicted. >> firefighters responded to the fire around 10:30 last night. we're told no other were

effected. police told us it was just too early to tell. fairfield police are holding that news conference as i mentioned earlier at 11:00 later this morning. we're told police did not have a chance to spoke to the mom before she went into surgery last night. reporting live jade hernandez jenn ktvu news. we have breaking news coming from the oakland hills. chopper 2 is flying over this. there is a fire out there. small grass fire. you can see the live pictures. a lot of police and fire activity there. this is the intersection of redwood and pine hurste. news chopper two is giving us a start. you can get an idea something is going on. it looks like they have a handle on it. the initial reports we're getting it's not that big and they are knocking it down. at the same time firefighters are reminding all of us the fire danger is very, very high.

this is a spare the air day. the danger for fire very high on a very hot windy day. be careful. there is a warning this morning about a peeping tom who has been disguising himself as a woman. ktvu kraig debro joins us now. gives us details on the suspect. >> reporter: good morning. what lengths this person is going to to disguise himself to get into the woman's locker room. we're finding people here at the payment at the campus of uc berkeley has had no idea what happened. it hit the uc police website yesterday. the facility opened at 6:00. a published report says they have posted signs inside the locker rooms with information about the crime alert. i was in the mens locker room and did not see any signs. there is none posted outside the building. a man was spotted inside the

woman's locker room. the first was monday the 4th. a custodian spotted a suspect taking pictures of women in the locker room with a cell phone. >> i had no idea that type of thing was going on here. they need to fix that. >> reporter: when confronted the suspect knead fred. it happened two days later on the 6th. this time -- she confronted him. he fled. both times police were called but did not locate the suspect. the daily cal is reporting the berkeley lieutenant as saying the suspect is described as wearing a white gym towel on his head and be covering his jaw and mouth with the towel. he's 5'4"-6'5" and is indian or hispanic. they won't have anything to say until the public information

officer gets in. reporting live kraig debro. authorities in pleasant hill warning residents about a mountain lion on the loose. it happened near mrelo -- near morello avenue. the officers were armed. they spotted it. it was not an aggressive mountain lion. it was last seen moving out into the open field into that area. animal control officers have joined the police and searching for that mountain lion. residents if you see it you're asked to stay away and immediately call the police. today is day two of a three day strike by nurses at oakland's children's hospital. about 800 union nurses walked off the job yesterday to protest a contract dispute.

children's hospital want them to contribute to their health care plans. it's costs have gone up 80% in five years. children's hospital has hired replacement nurses to care for patients during the work stoppage. 6:36. i was just thinking tara, we have an accident in the south bay now. >> we do. unfortunately my maps are down. we do have a two car crash in san jose this is the capital expressway onramp southbound 87 be aware of that. right now we'll head down to the south bay. you can see traffic is moving pretty well. yesterday we had a lot of back upright there. as you make your way toward highway 17. right now it seems to be moving along nicely. 880 same story. traffic is moving well. and the bay bridge toll plaza the metering lights are on. give yourself extra time if you are make your way into san francisco this morning. 6:37 here is steve.

between ocean beach. so fog on the coast it will be warm to hot. there are areas on the coast that will cool down a good 20 degrees. you have that northeast wind that helps. yesterday napa airport was sitting at 70 degrees. now they are sitting at 60. san francisco we'll go 80 again. oakland 91 yesterday. i'm going 86 today. san jose that should say 93. 90 today. santa rosa 46. san carlos at 60 degrees. 45 yew chi yeah. ten more for fresno. and then 50 in monterey with a lot of fog.

welcome back to the morning news. we want to take you live to san francisco this morning. another active scene we are following take a look. about 850 workers at union square hilton hotel walked off the job just a few hours ago. again we are looking live this morning. they are supposedly starting a six-day strike. workers are protesting the hotels efforts to lock them into current contracts. again this is outside the hill from san francisco near union square. we will continue to watch this. here is a quick look at the

other top stories we're following for you. the third and final debate turned personal r the candidates. they are each fighting off recent controversies. the candidates disagreed on most of the issues last night. jerry brown and meg whitman while they were trying to offer a clear choice for the state still undecided voters. building in san brew know fire zone could start in a couple of months. the city counsel decided to fast track. they are also waving permit fees. and an incredible story a 12th coal miner in chile he feels good now. just pulled to freedom. this is part of an incredible rescue of the 33 coal miners trapped for two months beneath the ground in chile. the operation is still going on. it will continue throughout the day. so far none of the miners have had any serious medical problems. the line is getting longer

all in the mid 60s. you will have a big difference in temps in san francisco alone. big ridge of high pressure building northward. 60s and 70s along the coast. warm to hot again today. san francisco i'm going to 80. it could be anywhere from 68-85 depending on where you are. 93 is the record. santa rosa in 91. san jose 90 again. the record 93 way back. 50 at the napa airport. 54 in san francisco. 57 pahl low al toe. palo alto. away from the coast even a couple of steps. it probably won't matter. that is a big ridge of high pressure. 60s and 70s near the beaches. upper 80s and mid 90s inland.
