>> reporter: they call this an emergency road repair. work is underway right now in the lanes closest to the water. the closure is expected to continue through the morning commute. motorists are already expressing frustration. >> i guess i'll have to take the bay bridge or del martin bridge if that's the only way to get over the bay. i know one lane is going to make a lot of traffic. a lot of people will be upset with that. >> reporter: they say during a routine inspection yesterday they found a 10-inch crack in a wish bone shaped steel beam on the bridge located right before the elevated portion of the bridge. the beam was put in 9 years ago as part of a fit. >> what it could lead to long- term is having serious problems. there was no danger of immediate failure, but, you know, there are no unimportant parts of the bridge. when you find a crack like

this, you do have to take immediate action. >> reporter: crews right now are making two steel plates. the repair work is not expected to be completed until tomorrow afternoon. once that is done, cal-tran says it will try to determine what caused the crack in the first place. >> i'm glad they found it. it could have been a problem for everybody else. traffic is going to be they believe, i guess. >> reporter: cal-tran advices to give yourself more time or use other bridges instead. stay tuned tomorrow for the latest updates. . as you might recall, the bay bridge had a big problem last year with a crack in an i- bar. the initial repair work failed, causing the steel bar to fall

on to the bridge. a permanent $14 million fix was made in late december. fire officials tell ktvu news they are wrapping up their arson investigation into last summer's devastating fire. it gutted a 25,000 square foot building and destroyed 16 classrooms. now they are reporting authorities are planning to announce the arrest of two teenagers at 10:00 tomorrow morning. when we asked about an arrest, fire officials withheld comment tonight. they have also declined to say where the fire started or how it spread. ktvu news will attend tomorrow's news conference and have developments on the noon news. a 28 year old fairfield mother remains in the hospital tonight accused of killing her twin 3 year old daughters. 28 year old monica kerik fatally stabbed the girls. it happened about 10:30 last

francisco hotels was 92% in august, the average room rate was $166. we've learned that workers at the hilton are planning to go on strike tomorrow with 1500 employees. the hotel is hilton's largest anywhere in the world. hundreds of nurses from children's hospital in oakland are also on strike tonight. health care costs are also the center of this dispute. the hospital wants the nurses to start contributing part of their pay to their benefits while the nurses say the recently postponed raise and can't afford it. children's hospital brought in 125 replacement nurses to work during the 3-day strike. other than surgeries being postponed, a spokesperson said it is business as usual. tomorrow should be the final day of the walkout. . the wall street journal

reported yahoo maybe reporting to a takeover from aol. they rejected an offer from microsoft. the wall street journal said aol would need financial help to make the deal for yahoo. the national transportation safety board released a prim their report today outlying the sequence of events leading up to last month's gasline explosion in san bruno. a power glitch caused a surge in pressure. that caused a valve system to malfunction moments before the explosion. the agency also says it took pg&e 34 minutes to shut off the pipeline and it took 1 hour and 47 minutes to shut off the gas. read the full report on our website, www.ktvu.com. a pg&e representative visited south san francisco to talk

and turn to www.ktvu.com for port rats of all 33 miners rescued and continuing coverage on how they are recovering. plans to build a controversial asphalt plant are moving forward after five years of debate, the board of supervisors gave a tentative okay to the plant. the prospect of jobs won over other concerns. opponents say they worried the plant would be harmful to the environment. if built, it would sit along the river. a final vote is expected in december. . san francisco's supervisors are moving forward with their plans to build a pricey wheelchair ranch at city hall. the budget and finance committee set aside $600,000 for the project. the ramp would enable access to the podium where the board president presides. the project has been criticized because many say it would be rarely used. the full board is set to vote

next tuesday. oakland's largest newspaper made its endorsement for mayor today. the tribune says rebecca caplin should lead the city. because of rank choice voting, voters should consider joe tumin and gene quan next month. they slammed don saying his grasp of the issues is appalling and he has a history of ethically questionable dealings. the east bay express has also endorsed caplin, tumin and quan. meg whitman pouring another $20 million in her campaign and jerry brown releasing another attack add. randy sandoval has his report. >> reporter: jerry brown lost
