and here is a look at traffic. if you make your way onto the macarthur maze or berkeley, traffic back ups. and on is san mateyo bridge, bun westbound lane is shut down. joining us live the claudine long who is at the san mateyo bridge to tell us more about how this happened and what are the engineers doing right now. claudine? re. yes. we are son the san mateyo bridge. we can show you the problem area on the bridge. coned off right now. located as you head up on the incline westbound on the bridge. the problem is actually underneath the bridge. to deal with the problem, they have one lane shut down. you can see people are still moving through there quite well at this hour. we expect the change to show as the traffic picks up with the

morning commute. cal tran is hoping everyone will avoid this if possible. take the bay or dumbarton bridges. if you have to traveling across the bridge, this is what you will look at as you come across. this is video we shot as you drive across the westbound direction this morning. you hit the cones and then you see it coned off. it stops after you get up and over the incline, but you know with a morning commute, that is all it takes to cause a problem. there is a 10-inch crack in the 30-foot long wish-boned shaped steel beam right before the incline on the under side of the bridge. that was found on a routine inspection of the bridge, but they have to fix it. it is part of a retro fit that went in nine years ago. they need metal plates to fix it and that all takes time. peel we talked to about the

morning -- people would talked to about the morning commute weren't happy about it. >> the bridge commutes is always terrible but this is worse. the whole quality of life, it affects it all. it is a real pain. >> definitely. how does this happen? cal tran needs to do something about it. >> reporter: well, they will do something about it, but not until later today. you are looking back live at the san mateyo bridge. again, at the problem area here, you can see the cones shutting across. this is what you will see more of. the long jam starts right there as people go through it. that is just going to get worse as more and more commuters head out here for their morning commute. again, cal tran is now waiting for two steel plate that is will be made above and below

the crack. the plates will not be done until this afternoon. that is why you don't see any construction crews working there this morning to fix it. they can't. they need to get the plates, and wait to find out what caused the problem. the long term issue of this track is something they are trying to address right now. they will get that done this afternoon, but first we have to get through the morning. live on the san mateyo bridge, ktvu fox 2 morning news. >> you may remember the bay bridge had a similar problem where's year but on a much -- problem last year but on a much larger scale. a crack was found on a i-bar. the steel i bar could fall on the bridge, so it had to be shut down for almost a week. a $14 million fix was made in december. a mother accused of a horrifying crime is still in the hospital this morning. 28-year-old monica christine mccarrick fatally stabbed her

twin 3-year-old daughters before trying to take her own life. police say the tragic incident happened tuesday night at the paradise valley apartments on north texas boulevard. the young mother is accused of setting their apartment on fire. neighbors saw the smoke and broke down the apartment door, trying to help. >> we entered the room and there was so much smoke and heat, there was no point risking our lives, trying to get in there, not knowing who or what else was in there. >> homicide investigators believe the twin girls were killed before the fire started. the children's mother will be trance sported to -- transported to the solano county jail. and clerks and bartenders at the hilton union square watched off the job wednesday morning and promise to continue the strike until next tuesday morning.

they have been working without a contract and hotel guests are in the middle of it. >> no room service. so san torial staff. >> do they clean the rooms? >> they just did. >> reporter: right now the hotel is being run by managers. workers from other hotels and 400 replacement workers. the hilton's general manager says the strike won't resolve any contract issues, but he will ask the union to resume contract talks within two weeks. now, ktvu fox 2 morning news learned the hilton waikiki in hawaii may be on strike today. it has 1500 pleas and is the largest hilton hotel in the world. students at james logan high school in union city may be exposed to tuberculosis, after one of their classmates tested positive. we are live with that story now. >> reporter: good morning. i want to let you know there are two different stories about who is positive, whether or not it is a student or somebody

associated with the school. now, the first people to arrive here at the school is usually a custodian. the custodian is a little concerned because he is family at home and right now there is a little uncertainty. a letter went out to parents last week telling them about the active case of tb. the letter is dated october 8th and mentioned nothing about 500 students needing to be tested for a bacterial disaster. there is a accomplished -- disease. there is a accomplished report claiming 500 people need to be tested. a spokesperson says "an individual associate we had the school" has been identified as an active carrier. parent will be notified in writing tomorrow if their child need to be tested for exposure to tb, and whether the person is merely associate we had the school or an employee is a big

reception and dinner. we are learning new details about the hunting accident back in 2006 when then vice president dick cheney accidentally shot one of his companions. we have new information about the extend of the victim's injuries -- extent of the victim's injuries. good morning, allison. >> reporter: that is right. we are learning harry wittington was possibly closer to death and his injuries more dire than anyone knew after he was shot by dick cheney five years ago. the 82-year-old texas lawyer did an extensive interview with the washington post. he already reported he had a mild heart attack, but is also revealing he had a collapsed lung and underwent invasive surgery after the accident and the rifle shot just barely missed his corotid artery. >> thankfully harry wittington is on the meant and doing very

stores are about to get a green upgrade. the company is putting solar panels on eight of its facilities in california, including the stores in east palo alto and emoryville. it uses green energy in many stores in canada. well, some of the 33 miners rescued in chile could get out of the hospital today. and the golden bay bridge is looking good at this hour. some of the items came from the east coast in an east oakland wal-mart that includes a bag of beads that has 12 times the amount of lead as allowed. the that child's chair had lead content 60 times higher than legal. the center for environment health says other children's furniture and toys exceeded state and federal standards. researchers reported the lead- filled items to the state attorney general which is contacting the stores. well, some of the 33 miners rescued from the mine in chile may be able to leave the hospital today. check up. win has pneumonia and two required dental surgery. one of the miners, 34-year-old edison penaa villarroel has been offered a free trip to elvis presley's home in tennessee. another miner, 50-year-old yonny barrios rojas has a few things to straighten out now that he is back on the surface. while barrios was underground, his wife and mistress discovered each other while the miner's families waited for the rescue. he sent a message up that he wanted both women to be there to great him, but only the mistress showed up. and we are learning about a contract the miners signed. one wrote a letter to his wife saying the men culted with a attorney and -- consulted with a attorney and drew up a

bridge. they are talking about a crack right underneath the incline. you can see the coned up section of the bridge over there. they cannot open the lane because they are waiting to fix the problem. as you can see from the cars slowing down right as they cross that area, when you take away one lane of traffic in a morning commute, it is going to mess up your commute. there is no getting around it. i want to show you a look from chopper 2 at the bridge this morning. you can see traffic is still moving right now. but cal tran, everyone suggested if you can avoid this bridge this morning, do that. take the dumbarton bridge or bay bridge. there problem was discovered last night. didn't affect the evening commute because it was in the opposite direction. when they discovered the crack in the beam, a long, wish- boned shape beam about 30 feet long, they realized they could

have to leave the lane shut down. the solution is to put two steel plates on it and they have to be made. that is why there is a delay in getting the lane backed open. that won't be done until this afternoon, probably. we have talked to commuter this is morning. some very unhappy about hearing of the problem. others are taking it in stride. >> something as complex of building a bridge that long, you are bound to have structural problems. you are bound to have engineering problems. so, before we had the bridges, you can imagine what it was like to get around the bay if you wanted to go up to the city. >> what it could lead to long term is having serious problems. there was no danger of immediate catastrophic failure, but there are no unimportant parts of the bridge, so, when you find a crack like this, you do have to take immediate action. >> reporter: looking back live at the san mateyo bridge, as you can see, things are jamming up a bit. we expect that to get worse

that morning goes on. we will continue to monitor the situation, but, again, if you don't have to take the san mateyo bridge this morning, don't. time knoll 6:33. hundreds of high school students in union city have have to be tested for tuberculosis. a student at james logan high school tested positive for the disease. the student is being treated and is no longer on the campus. the school and alameda county district are working to identify any students most at risk. the oakland tribune reports 500 students will have to be tested next week. oakland is seeking an injunction against a narrow toreius street gang in an effort to crack down on violent crime, covering an area between 21st avenue and high street below brookdale avenue.

the 42 gang members targeted by the injunction would be prohibited from carrying guns and hanging out with each other. they would also be under curfew. one self professed gang member we talked to said the crackdown would make little difference. >> it don't matter to me and i don't think it matter to anybody else. they are not going to stop what i am doing, you know? >> city leaders say the targeted gang has been involved in 35 shootings this year alone. the injunction still has to be approved by the alameda county supreme court. time now 6:35. there will be a hearing to review another injunction filed against a noh oakland gang back in june. this targets 15 known gang members in an area east of nor telegraph avenue. some have been as opposed to the injunction, claiming it is racial profiling and plan to stage a rally outside today.

a man tried to abduct a toddler. a woman was walking with her one-year-old daughter on monterey road tuesday, when the man showed in this police sketch pushed her and grabbed for the child. the woman was able to fight him off. the police describe the man at latino, in his 20s or 30s, about 5'9" with dark hair. he work a mechanic's jump suit. we have the first official report on the federal government on the san bruno pipeline explosion. the ntsb says a power glitch cause add surge surge in pressure, and that caused a valve system to malfunction moment before the deadly explosion and fire. last night a pg&e spokesman was in south san francisco and answered pretty tough questions about last month's disaster. >> the main thing i am concerned about is upping the pressure and having shut off

this is a shot from chopper 2. not too bad when you are approach the plaza, but then it start to bunch up where the lane closure happens. we are not sure how long it will take. we hope it is fixed by the end of the day, and certainly by tomorrow's commute. it starts there. you can see where the headlights and taillights, underneath where the repairs will be occurring soon. there are a couple of cones set up there where the one lane is blocked. that is causing delays right now. if you need to take the san mateyo bridge, it would really be a good idea to take the bay or dumbarton bridges instead. let's take a live look at 237. this is also an option for you moderate to get from one side of the bay to the other if you need to. right now not looking too bad westbound as you drive toward sunnyvale. this is a look at the bay

world's top female golfers will tee off at the blackhawk country club in danville. but one player will not be taking part in today's tournament. we are live with the details of the story. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. a transgender woman says she doesn't want the lpga to stop the tournament being held here today at blackhawk, but she doesn't want any future tournament to be held until this matter is settled. live in danville this morning where the lpga is shareholderring a tournament at blackhawk -- is holding a tournament at blackhawk. no men are allowed to play. but one man that underwent surgery five years ago to become a woman says it is unfair and the rules are keeping her out. lana lawless has taken her case to court, and instead of the playing on the green today, she is defending what she says is her right to play.

committee set aside $600,000 yesterday to build a wheelchair ramp in the supervisors chambers where the board president it is. the project has come under fire not only for the price tag but because many say it wouldn't be used very often. the full board will vote on the plan on tuesday. strange, shiny objects hovering over new york city sparking wild explanations about ufo's. you take a look. this is a picture of the shiny object. police say they reported several calls about the shiny object in the sky. flight officials put the radars on it but didn't find anything in the area. they say those objects were probably balloons. not long after the first sightings, messages began appearing on twitter connecting the citings from a report of a retired nor rad officer

predicting the ufo reports would buzz the city on october 13th. police looking for a atm stolen from a hospital. they took pictures of a man walk into tadoctor's medical center with a hand cart. there were two thieves that made off with the atm through the same door. it happened between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. last week. the hospital staff reported it missing a few hours later. we had traffic concerns about the san mateyo bridge. what is latest tara. >> reporter: sorry. telling the chopper to standby. we have a lot going on. the san mateyo bridge. we have been talking about it all morning long. we have live pictures. engineers discovered a crack in the beam underneath the bridge yesterday during a routine inspection, so they have shut down one of the westbound lanes. here is a look at the toll plaza where it seems traffic is moving well through that area. but when you get to the section

where they shut off one of the lanes, it is getting backed up. you want to give yourself from time. cal tran is advicing that folks use the bay or dumbarton bridge instead. you can see right here it seem to be moving along nicely. once before you hit the high- rise, it starts to get backed up right there where one of those lanes have been shut down. you can see all the folks on the bridge. this could be a real disaster. we don't know how long these repairs are going to take. we have been told 24 to 48 hours. that was at of yesterday, last night when they shut down the bridge. hopefully this will be fixed by tomorrow morning's commute. it is a nightmare right now and folks are in stop and go position right there. and adding to the situation here, we have a little sphynxout into the center divider, 880 south bound near the tole plaza. be aware of that. we will keep an eye on it for

new tests show one of the area's biggest damns could -- dams could collapse, leading to big catastrophe. sarah palin is here for a fundraiser that could attract big crowds. and hundreds of bay area students affected by a health report. a live report on that. and there will be more aggressive action to remove homeless people in the park. the homeless people is down to 50 thanks to sweeps of the park. but those remaining are moving deeper into the park and make it more difficult to find them. officials say many have mental health issues or substance abuse problems. a new government report says latino here in the u.s. can expect to outlive white americans by more than two years. the researchers call it the latino pair doctors, because
