tori campbell is off today. caltrans is hoping to finish emergency repairs today to the san mateo bridge in time for tonight's commute. the agency found a crack in a support beam on the westbound side. crews closed one of three westbound lanes for repairs. caltrans says they discovered this problem during a routine inspection yesterday. the crack is about 10 inches on a wishbone-shaped beam where the elevation portion of the beam begins. >> one silver lining is the inspection worked. >> the good news is that the lane closure did not cause much of a traffic backup this morning. officials are advising commuters to take the bay

bridge or the dumbarton bridge to help with the traffic flow. authorities say they have arrested two people responsible for setting a fire to a san jose elementary school. police made the announcement at a late-morning news conference. claudine wong was there and join us live with new details on the arrest. >> reporter: we know two teenagers are in custody today, two teenagers that authorities say are responsible for the devastating fire at trace elementary school. what we still don't know is why. life at trace elementary school is busy, routine's have been established and kids and staff alike seem to be getting used to this tell foe rarely campus, built if the -- temporary campus, built in the wake of this arson fire and the question of who did this still lingers. >> it's nice to move forward. i guess they are innocent until proven guilty. it does help. it's not something i was

anxiously upset about -- but i think it helps people to move on to have closure. >> reporter: authorities announced the arrest of two teenagers for this tire. but when asked why or how this fire was september back on the 5th, authorities remain tight- lipped. >> we know that we have individuals in custody who we believe are the individuals who started the fire. what motivated them to -- to do this act, we don't know whether it was a dare. we don't know if it was just random. we don't know if it was some malicious act, retribution or something like that. >> the fire caused $10 million in damage and caused damage to 16 classrooms. within six weeks on the first day of school, a temporary

structure had been completed. >> the "why" is a mystery. but as we look at this, we're glad it has been hopefully solved at this point. we know, too, not only is it the academic piece we're in charge of. as we move forward that's what we need to look at. >> so with recovery still underway, one teacher says she is glad to hear the arrest. >> reporter: a parent we talked to said she always thought the culprits were likely kids. even though we don't have an official motive yet, she said she will be talking to her own children about this hoping to teach them a lesson about consequences. back to you. >> thank you. the hot way this week could give way to a cooling trend in the next couple of days days.

you are looking at berkeley. the five-day outlook puts them in the 70s by sunday. mark tamayo will join us with the bay area in just a few minutes. the conditions in alum rock park are dangerously dry and officials are monitoring the situation closely and closed the park. they could reopen the park tomorrow. the mother accused of killing her twin daughters is in the hospital. police say monica christine mccarrick is in the hospital. the twins were found dead in their apartment tuesday night. the mother is accused of getting the apartment on fire.

they also say they didn't die in the fire. we are following a developing story at this hour. police arrested two suspects after a drive-by shooting left a gunman injured. >> investigators believe this shooting was likely gang- related. oakland police have not released the identity of the 16- year-old victim yet. he was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. students at a bay area school will had undergo tb testing after a classmate tifted positive for tuberculosis. today county health officials are taking place to prevent any spread of the disease. kraig debro is live in oakland. >> reporter: good afternoon, jana. they are gonna be taking the rare, if not unprecedented test, to james logan high school next week. the person who runs the testing says about a third of all of those tested will will test positive for -- those tested

will test positive for tb. he said it's something to worry about, just don't get too worried. mes logan has 4500 students. there will be testing all because of one active case. >> i'm scared my son is gonna get infected with this. >> reporter: last week parents got letters from the high school telling them a student had hb. yesterday, a letter went out to parents saying testing is needed. are the parents worried about it? >> not really. i'm not. >> they know it's there. but they are not worried about it. >> this is not a scare. this is what we do all of the time. >> reporter: dr. bob benjamin says a third of the world's population is infected with the virus that causes tb which is spread through close contact. the patient who was diagnosed with tuberculosis is no longer

the national transportation safety board has released its first official report on the san bruno pipeline explosion last month. investigators cite several flaws with pg&e including a delay in shutting off the gas valve. the report also says a power glitch at a pg&e facility in milpitas triggered a surge in pipeline pressure, causing the valve system to malfunction minutes before the deadly explosion and fire. >> today the california public utilities commission will review the ntsb report. you can read that entire report by going to ktvu.com. union workers at the san francisco hilton hotel are in their second day of a strike. alameda county is sending out three ballots partly because of range of choice voting there. the additional rate will increase the postage to 78 cents. alameda county is looking for people to help out as poll workers on election day. they say the greatest need are workers in the cities of berkeley and oakland. poll workers will earn between $95 and $180 a day. they are also paid sometime stipend to attend a mandatory training meeting. chuck reed addressed the
