why an air conditioning unit was a cause for concern in an overnight fire in san jose. another lane down on the san mateo bridge. we'll tell you how to get around the mess this morning coming up in traffic. it's been a week of record setting temperatures. hot, muggy and humid. can we cool it down or keep it warm? >> and pumping gas may be less convenient this morning. why you won't be able to fill up hands free at some stations. that story just ahead.

well good morning to you. you made it to friday. october 15th. i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook let's get a look at weather with steve. how is the weather steve? >> let's take a look at the the weather. we have fog coming back to the coast. that's not the right grabbing. i was too busy updating thing ifs. 60s and 70s and 80s. it will be three to five degrees cooler. here is tara. >> thanks. this is a live look at the san mateo bridge. repairs on the right hand side will cause the lanes to be shut down. we hope it will be open by this morning. avoid the bridge if you can this morning. 101 is looking pretty good at this hour. so far no delays.

602 let's head back to the desk. we do have developing news from san jose. firefighters are on scene at a fire station. ktvu kraig debro joins us now from the scene. how does it look now? >> reporter: firefighters are their overhaul stage. they are poking room. they are making sure the hot spots are discovered and put out. there are two businesses here. extended the damage from the outside isn't that great. firefighters tell me both of these businesses will be -- several 911 calls plus a santa clara sheriffs deputy and san jose police department cruiser was out in the area. firefighters got here and saw the fire was in the back of the building. because the fire had gone up in the attithey called for a second alarm. they said it was a heavy potential for a bigger fire

because of the fuel in the business. we got these pictures exclusively not overly dramatic. the whole attic up there is burnt out. they had a high danger potential because there was a heavy piece of equipm roof which could have fallen through. >> there is heavy air conditioning units. that's concern for us. in fact on this particular building when firefighters went to the roof they found the units have within compromised. >> reporter: nobody was injured in the fire. the 711 was open at the w the c firefighters did say the fire had been burning for a long period of time before it was discovered. not sure why that is. behind this 711 is one of these

urban creeks. again nobody hurt. the level of damage that's still going to be calculated. not only the building but they are going to be calculating the loss of merchandise inside. the clerk is still around i'm going to see if i can talk to him. get firsthand account. reporting live in san josekraig debrond. there has been a disturbing uptake in burglaries at churches. these are four of the six churches burglarized from august to september. some of them were hit more than once. the stolen items include money stolen from collection boxes. police say some of the thefts could be connected to homeless outreach programs a the the churches. santa clara police are investigating one of their own. they arrested 36-year-old

officer clay rojas. he gave information to william -- the two are now facing felony conspiracy charges. time now 6:05 the san francisco giants are in philadelphia this morning. they are getting ready for game one of the national league championship series against the phillies tomorrow evening. tim lincecum he's the starting pitcher for the giants. roy halladay will pitch for the phillies. halladay threw a no hitter in his last start. fox sports coverage of game one begins at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon and of course you can watch the whole series right here with us on ktvu channel 2. deadline day. some 3,000 gas stations in california have until today to replace nozzles because they are said to be dangerous ktvu paul chambers is here to explain. >> reporter: good morning. it deals with alation the

nozzles. a lot of people are familiar with it. you click the nozzle so you can pump gas without staying at the pump. it's called vst. that's the brand. this place right here behind us has those things. some of the nozzles are spraying out gasoline. this happened you can see it here at a surveillance video. you can see a customer getting sprayed with gas with the host. similar incidents have happened. spewing gas on the ground. back in august the state fire marshal said all 3 thursday stations that have vapor system technology must remove the hold open latch by today. the fire marshal said the action needed to take place if the station wanted to stay open. gas station owners said they will lose hundreds of dollars if that happens. that's why they ask the governor to step in.

he declined doing that. they also took it to court. the court rejected it. a local lawmaker is looking to meet with the local fire marshal. state air regulators are working with a permanent fix. right now the latches must go. i went over to this gas station behind me. i talked to the attendant. she said she will not discuss the issue. they still have vst nozzles in place. they still had the opilation their. so technically they are not supposed to have that later on. i will talk to the later on today. of course i will talk to customers and bring that to you later. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers. >> reporter: san francisco's great highway could be fully reopened today but with major changes. the southbound lanes between highway 35 have been closed

since december. screw have reenforced the coastline with large rocks and repaved the road. but they reduced the southbound lanes from two lanes to just one. >> we work with our traffic engineers to do a traffic study. the roadway should be be able to accommodate the roadway with one lane. northbound from highway 35 is not effected. >> now the road and the apartments are expected to reopen by the evening. it will be just in time for this weekend's annual nike women's marathon race which ends at ocean beach. right along the great highway. >> all right should be nice weather for that. the closure has caused declays. we hear from tara. >> yeah. for people that live in that area there son-in-law one stop sign. one tiny intersection. this is great news for the folks that live there. you do face delays in the morning.

hopefully that will be lifted today. that is great news. all right right now we are going if take a look at our maps. we have report of a structure fire actually. this is in the 15,000 block of east 14th street in san leandro. the fire is out now. they are providing traffic control because they had to block off part of the street there. a live lack sat the san mateo bridge. show you the three westbound lanes. one lane you can see is still shut down because of emergency repairs to a crack on one of the beams underneath this band. we do expect delays this morning. highway 237 traffic starting to get heavier right now. really no delays to speak of at the moment. 610 here is steve. thank you very much. a little change already today. fog coming underneath the golden gate bridge.

right now hundreds of hotel workers are picketing again. the hilton there union workers are on strike for a third day. they have been without a contract for more than a year. the union says the sticking points are health care, beiges and pension. they say it needs them to pay

for their health care. time now 6:15 sarah palin will be speaking in sacramento as she continues her california tour. and tomorrow palin will speak in orange county. all of that follows yesterday's speech in san jose. >> welcome sarah palin. [ cheering and applause ] >> 1800 people paid between $25 and $100 to hear the former republican vice presidential candidate at the san jose center for the performing arts. >> are you ready to take back and put government back on the side of the little guy and have government work for you instead of you having to work for government? >> the palin three-day campaign through california will not include appearances with republican senate candidate carly fiorina or meg whitman. the recent fold poll showed 53% of voters would be less likely to vote for a candidate because of sarah palin endorsement.

more than 10,000 people are expected at a tea party rally. candidates that are backed by the tea party will speak. they will include david harmon and wilson and republican running for the state assembly. for the second year in a row the government will announce a budget deficit of more than $1 trillion. alison burns reports now that is going to put democrats on the offensive even more on the campaign trail now. right? >> reporter: good morning to you. that means the government keeps spending more than it's bringing in. let's take a look at the numbers. the congressional budget office is prekicking the budget will total $1.29 trillion. that is down slightly from the

highest deficit the year before $1.4 trillion. >> spending a trillion dollars on projects that many weren't necessary many were part of boondoggles and many were favoritism and we see proof of that. there is some vindication. >> president obama is on the defensive about it as he campaigns for democratic candidates saying he inherited a record deficit from the bush administration. president obama's bipartisan reduction commission is expected to release its report on how to reign it in after the midterm elections. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. the pentagon says it will comply with a court order to stop enforcing its don't ask

don't tell. last month the federal judge delaired the law unconstitutional. the obama administration has appealed the ruling. president obama says he remains committed to ending the policy but believes it's up to congress to repeal it. a new school fundraising idea is getting low grades from health experts. mcdonald's calls it mcteachers night. this week schools across the county will have their teachers standing behind fast food counters serving meals. the school gets 20% of the profits. however some nutritionists say that are concerned teachers will be promoting fast food when the childhood obesity rate is extremely high. i want to go back over to tara who is in for sal. how does the commute look? >> we do have an accident that we want to mention that popped up in san francisco if you take

they are ten degrees cooler. there is a sign it will be cooler. san francisco is 85 yesterday. 70 today. 50s and 60s around the bay. some upper 50s low 60s. but there is a little bit of a west wind from sfo out to travis. we have not seen that all week long. we will begin the cooling trends. 60s and 70s. still upper 80s inland. much cooler weather moves in saturday and a low comes right over us or near us sunday, monday. partly cloudy cool and breezy. >> thank you steve. retailers are expecting a stronger season this year. the san francisco business times reports gumps is expected to hire up to 20% more. kohls is also hiring more.

business owners say they remain unsure about how much shoppers will spend this year. but realize being short staffed could help profit. strong sales of bar by and disney could push intell up by 70%. bringing in $1.84 billion worldwide. barbie rose 6%. the sale of other dolls rose 7%. the sales were down down for hot wheels. >> you bought all those barbies. >> we have a lot. the largest dam in the south bay is on shaky ground. why there are efforts to protect millions of residents living downstream. 880 getting a bit busier as your friday commute wears on. we'll have more traffic hot spots coming up.

you can see traffic is moving along fairly nicely. 6:25 let's head over to the desk. big changes are coming to oakland international airport the faa and officials will break down on an air friendly traffic control tower. the new 13,000 square foot tower. the ground breaking ceremony is set for -- construction on the new pipeline that boost the state's water supply is under way near tracy. aground breaking ceremony was held yesterday. the $28 million pipeline will connect the aqua duct. the new pipe lynn is expected to -- the new pipeline will be fully operational by 2012. major concerns about a

major dam that is -- anderson dam is the largest reservoir. it's located very close to the calaveras fault. it could collapse sending a wall of water into morgan hill and north to san jose. >> yeah definitely a concern for all the residents. >> water officials say it could cost $150 million to fix that 60-year-old dam just in case they won't allow the reservoir to fill up to 56% capacity. we are following developing news in san jose. crews are putting out hot spots outside a early morning fire. we're also monitoring the

fire damage. investigators are still searching for the cause of the fire. he will have more details coming up. >> we are learning tragic new tails about this weeks death of twin girls. investigators now say 28-year- old monica christine did fatally stab her three-year-old daughter on tuesday night. the young mother tried to take her own life by slashing her own throat and setting her apartment on fire. mccarrick is facing several felony charges including murder and arson. she will be fully charged. >> time now 6:32. two teenagers accused of destroying a fire or parts of it is scheduled to be arraigned in court today. the 16 and 17-year-old boys were arrested tuesday and wednesday. this fire back in july caused millions of dollars in damage to the school. police say the boys never

attended trace. the motive in the case according to police remains unclear. >> one day whether it was a dare or random. we don't know if it was some malicious act retro abuse. >> it was the day after the fourth of july. so i think that had a lot to do with it. >> now police say reward money that was offered to help solve this case helped need to the arrest. prosecutors have not yet decided but they will charge the boys at either juveniles or adults. >> a foreigner bay area cub scout leader has been indicted on federal pornography charges. fbi agents arrested 48-year-old michael vawter yesterday before he was to appear at a hearing. san ramon police arrested vawter in march. investigators say that he had almost 200 pornographic images of children that appeared to be down loaded from the internet.

our time now 6:33 the public utilities commission declared a state of emergency as temperatures begin to go down. they reduced the gas pressure in the pipelines immediately after last months explosion in san bruno. now the puc has defined ways to meet the increased demand during the cooler months of winter. the puc plans to fire consultants they are working on several contingent city plans. they are working today to help improve the winter gas supplies. crews will be working on a pipeline -- as part of that residents of himself hillsborough will you will smell gas today. as the crews purge the line to work on it. they will do that at the beginning and then the end of the workday that is expected

from 7:00 until 8:00 tonight. san jose money problems could be new stadium for the a's. city legallers say they may not have enough money to buys last parcels of land. however team owner lou wolf will stand up to the plate to buy some. there are several obstacles. they include the giants claim to the territorial rights. some cats on the peninsula humane society could soon benefit from san francisco giants fever. the humane society is offering a special $9 adoption fee. normal fees range from $52-$80. they say there are 50 orange colored cats. time now 6:35. one lane is still closed because of an ongoing emergency

repair project. jade hernandez is joining us now. how traffic is effected now. jade. >> reporter: good morning. we are live on the bridge this morning. we're monitoring traffic. we warned drivers about the work that has caused a lane closure here on the san mateo bridge. we will remind you again. commuters should use the bay bridge. just to avoid any tie up. you can see traffic is slow just a bit on the bridge this morning. crews worked overnight and closed one of three westbound lanes to fix a ten inch crack found in agile girder. workers discovered it during a routine inspection on wednesday. it's located in a steel girder that allows the bridge to move back and forth. the girder was installed into a seismic retro fit. the beam will not be replaced. it's actually being reenforced

of steel plates on the top and below the beams. the bridge which is seven miles long is no danger of falling. that's part of the reason why the far right westbound lane remains closed. >> it's a wish bone shape steel beam. the crack is one on one side of the if it happened on one side the other side is every bit susceptible. >> reporter: caltran tells us they are confident inspections work since this cracked beam was identified early. keep in mind commuters if you are head into the peninsula you can expect a 30 minute delay. that's what caltran was calculating yesterday. traffic is still a little slow. let's check in with tara. what is rest of the bay area look like? >> we are urging folks to use the bay bridge and it is looking pretty backed upright

now. the metering lights are on now. the back up extends all the way to the maze. a half mile before treasure island we have a report of a fax machine and car seat. there could be possible slow down as well. give yourself some extra time. to your maps we go. we want to mention again this accident that is 101 northbound. had all four lanes blocked a the one time. it has not been updated on the chp website. hopefully one of the lanes is clear now. hopefully that accident is in the clearing stages. up next wee have a look at 24 through lafayette. traffic on the left hand side westbound. moving pretty well at this hour. 6:38 let's check in with steve. thank you.

good morning. happy friday everybody. why did i dress for today? yesterday was hot and humidity. it's going to be cooler. some of the highs from yesterday. some its. 98 santa rosa. and also livermore at 95 degrees. napa in town was 74. there were a lot of 90s around. but temperatures today they will come down. not as hot. 98. that was downtown santa rosa. airport was 96. system moving into the north. will stay to the north but increasing the on shore breeze even though though there is not much of a breeze. some of that fog very low and shallow. especial around the city and golden gate. all these temperatures in the city ocean beach to the financial district are down 8- 10 degrees from yesterday. yesterday morning was calm and warm. there was no breeze at all. today a noticeable change. temperatures will be coming

down today. inland they will still be warm. napa was 94 yesterday. we'll go 87 today. walnut creek low 90s. 87 today. san jose a hot 91 and humid we'll go 86 today. that is still warm. it's four degrees cooler than yesterday. there you go. that along with the west wind and the fog. coming together for cooler weather. gilroy at 53. pleasant hill upper 30s. 51 ukiah. very, very foggy around the monterey plaza. first part of the cooling weather is beginning. yesterday was hot and humid pattern. that gets kicked out of here. the high son way out. lows will come right near us by sunday and monday. we will ease into this cooler

well good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you. santa clara police arrested one of their own. 36-year-old veteran police officer clay rojas. he gave dmv information to hells angels. san francisco giant they are in philadelphia this morning. getting ready for game one of the national league championship series against the phillies tomorrow night. you can of course see that game right here on ktvu channel 2. and a southbound section of san francisco grade highway could be fully reopened today after being closed down because of erosion since december. the crews have reenforced the coastline with large rocks.

they have reduced the two lanes to just one lane. it's deadline day. 3,000 gas stations in california have until today to replace nozzles because they are said to been dangerous. ktvu channel 2 reporter paul chambers is following this story in san francisco this morning. >> reporter: it deals with a hold opilation the nozzle. many people use it all the time. you flip the latch so you can step away from the nozzle and continues to fill up your gas tank. it deals with the brand vst. the issue is people are putting the gas nozzle in their tank but it's spewing gas before it goes in. take a look at this surveillance video it shows what happened to one of the customers at that gas station. a person got sprayed with gas from the hose. similar incidents have happened from 13vst models. spewing gas on customers and

the ground. the state fire marshal said all 3,000 stations have vst nozzles must hold it open latch today. this action is needed if the place wants to stay open. >> we like this station. i think they should just keep working at it and fix the problem. >> and let them stay open. >> put a warning on the gas pump or something. >> reporter: gas station owners say they will lose hundreds of dollars because they are awaiting the new nozzles. last month owners asked the governor to postpone this issue he declined. they took the issue to court and was rejected there also. local lawmakers are planning to meet with fire marshals. i'm waiting for the owner to come here for this gas station that has those models currently still in there and open free latch which technically is not

supposed to be on today which they are not supposed to be operating. you'll hear from the gas station hopefully within the next half hour. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers. >> time now 6:47 the man accused of that attempted christmas day airline bombing he wants to continue working as his own owner. fired his government appointed lawyer last month. yesterday a federal judge asked if he wanted another attorney appointed to his case. the 24-year-old nigerian didn't think it was necessary. he's accused of trying to use explosive hidden inside of his under wear to blow up a plane. a federal judge in florida will hear key parts of a health care overhaul. the lawsuit was filed by 20 state attorneys general. they object that everyone must purchase health insurance. it's expected the case could end up at the sue preach court. we're now hearing about

taxpayer funded travel by speaker of the house nancy pelosi. according to new documents uncovered by judicial watch. pelosi and members of our family and staff took 85 tax paid trips on military aircraft between march of 2009 and june 2010. judicial watch calls pelosi use abusive. time to talk traffic. get you to where you need to go. what is happening in livermore? >> we have a traffic accident. there is something in the roadway a large rock, some sort of debris. and several cars have been running into it getsing flat tires and swerve into the center divider or having to pull off on to the shoulder. just be aware of that. right now we are going to take a live look at 280. traffic on the right hand side there. a little bit of sluggish.

still upper 80s. not the upper 90s we saw yesterday. 70 today. very low fog. you can see it kind of cool when it sneaks around. but that is sunny today. cooler you will get a breeze later on. 50s and 60s. san jose at 62. this part of the system beginning to move in. there is going to be a low forming that will settle over us by sunday and monday. keep the cooling trend as we get going. fog returning very shallow but it's there. it will be a little cooler. i know 90s is still hot. it won't be 90 like we saw yesterday. 60s over by the coast. much cooler as we go into saturday. here comes the low for a big cool down. we're keeping an eye on google this morning. the company posted a 32% jump

in third quarter earnings. google is getting more money from advertisers and more people are clicking on those ads. it's also hiring. google added 1500 employees in the last quarter. so far checking in on google stock it's up 10% right now. up almost $54 a share to almost $595 a share. checking in on the broader market. the no, stock exchange. the dow is down a little bit now. 4.5 points to 11, 090. we had consumer prices up in september. retail sales are up but inflation remains low. those are pretty good. we have ge reported third quarter profits down. we are waiting to hear more from federal reserve chairman ben bernanke about hopefully news to stimulate the economy. you can pick up an ipad at

walmart beginning today. it will start saling the popular apple devices at hundreds of stores throughout the u.s.. it starts in a couple of weeks. that is leading to changes now for the iphone. some investigators say this could be an indication that apple uses an iphone that works on the verizon network. >> people also talking about what some are calling mo town madness. this is fake musician arrested at a san francisco bar.
