medical call just as the game was started. but during a busy night these firefighters had some time to cheer on the team. >> i am hoping they go all the way. i -- but they are quick say no matter what they are doing, the job comes first. >> we leave everything hot on the table. we get that call and we take off. >> all of us are created equal. some of us grow up to be giants is the theme of the mural

, you know, playing this environment. and i'm quiet down a little bit. what is it about this team that has allowed you guys to be so successful with so many new guys coming in and playing roles like both of you? >> well, for me, you know, i think when i got here the situation was a little different. we had a lot of outfielders that were all really experienced. some guys on the bench that are used to playing every day. we all just came together and we had one thing in mind, and that was to win. we had to check our ego at the door and put the personal statistics aside and go out there and just, you know, play as a team. and i think it's one of the main reasons where we are at

right now. obviously our pitching is outstanding. for us to come together and play well as a team, that says a lot. >> i agree. he nailed it. it's easy for guys to come together when everyone has the same goal. that's obviously to win. a lot of guys that didn't start the year here are a big part of this team. like i said, when everybody is going out there to win it makes a big difference. >> and again to the left. >> pat, given how your year started and being released by tampa bay -- >> thanks. >> what does it feel like to get a big hit at the end of the day in an alcs game? and what was the turn around here versus tampa bay? >> i don't want to dwell too much on that. but obviously getting a chance to come out here and play i think was a big thing for me.

you know, after starting on a different team and having it turn out the way it did is not what you hope for, obviously. i got a chance. the giants gave me an opportunity to come and play. i just try to make the most of it. >> how close was that two- strike pitch? and describe that whole at-bat. >> it was a ball. i don't know. i haven't checked. i know that, you know, playing here and the home team and the crowd, it was close. he started me off with a fastball, i believe. i got behind 0-2 again. just really just trying to get something to put a good swing on it, keep the inning going. that was what our plan was at the end of the day, keep the line moving. we have a lot of guys that are capable of doing damage, you know, that are in the power stretch.

a guy like had, we have to maybe a conscious effort to tone it down and get good pitches to hit, which still isn't easy. >> cody, bruce said you wanted to be a rodeo clown. what's that all about? >> it was just something that i -- i don't know. it was something that i had aspirations of doing when i was, you know, in my adolescence or younger years, from 5 to 10. my dad was in the rodeo and i used to dress up like him and go to the rodeos. i guess, you know, the reason i was drawn to them so much is because those guys have no fear. they would put their life on the line to save a cowboy. you know, i just thought that was pretty neat that they could do that. >> charlie talked before the game about how difficult an adjustment you had to trying to be a dh. what is it that makes that so difficult? why are you so much -- do you

so f seem so much more comfortable when you are playing the field? >> i wish i knew the answer because it probably would have worked out differently down there. you know, for me it probably has to do with being in the game, playing in the field, being active in the game. that's a huge part of it for me. i am not saying that's right or wrong. i think for me it's an important part of it. >> all right. a couple of the heroes from the giants, pat burrell and cody ross. >> 4-3 giants win game 1 of the nlcs.

san francisco giants winning game 1. 4-3 back in philadelphia. of course, we are monitoring the podium back in philly if any giants players get up to speak, we will take you there live. right now we will head over to cam wayne. he has some non-giants related news but still very important around the bay area. >> things are happening tonight, mark. first, election day is almost two weeks away and the push is on to get voters to the polls. thousands of tea party members rallied in the east bay today trying to get people to register and vote republican. ken pritchett was there and has this report. >> good bless you patriots. whatever you are doing, large or small, we appreciate it. >> reporter: november 3 may be

a day for tea party celebrators to celebrate, but first they must go to the polls on november 2. that is what this rally is all about at the alameda fair grounds. bridgette nelson is the founder of the pleasanton tea party. this rally is much like the rally before the primary elections. now they are backing specific candidates. >> this time we are getting the candidates in front of the people and saying this is who you need to vote for. >> reporter: they support david harbor running for the congressional seat. nelson says the enthusiasm among tea party members has not wavered. it is difficult to estimate the size of the crowd because people are coming and going throughout the fair grounds throughout the day. they expect between 10 and 15,000 people, which would be more than the event in april. there was a small protest which

says it was republicans against democrats. >> the tea party doesn't worry me. i think they will undermine the republican party's efforts. >> reporter: the vice chair of the republican california party says they are keeping volunteers vital. >> the importance is that people who registered recently tend to vote. >> reporter: organizers say this is the biggest tea party ' convenient on the west coast. their stated goal is to unseat nancy pelosi as speaker of the house. >> and a reminder if you want to vote in the november election the deadline to register is this monday at midnight. a major movie director is pledging $1 million to fight proposition 23. avatar director james cameron says he will donate the money to fight the ballot measure which seeks to suspend

california's landmark global warming law. he is joining arnold schwarzenegger and environmental groups in opposition. if approved it would nullify the state's tough greenhouse gas laws until the unemployment rate drops to 5.4% for four consecutive quarters. pg&e has agreed to give internal documents to lawmakers. the utility agreed to turn over inspection reports as well as aids data on pgand e's highest risk gas pipelines. the documents will be used in hearings by two senate sub committees and the energy and utility communications committee. both are scheduled for tuesday. law enforcement specialists from across the country con vernalled on the bay area today to plan for criminal scenarios they hope do not occur. the exercise is called urban

shield. >> reporter: outside san francisco's city hall an fib swat team was briefed. members of a violent street gang had broken in and taken over the fourth floor. this was one of the 34 scenarios of the exercise. the sheriff's office set up urban shield to train law enforcement, fire and bomb squads from across the country and around the world. >> we are going to put them through some very realistic scenarios and hopefully if and when that time comes, and hopefully that never happens, but the teams will be prepared. >> reporter: crews had just a few minutes to formulate a plan. then they have to put that plan into action. inside city hall swat team members have to decide whom to trust or to arrest or shoot.

their every step is monitored by video and evaluated. the fbi says this kind of real- world training is invaluable. >> the alameda county sheriffs department, this is great for us. we can use city hall. a large number of locations where we can really visualize what a possible scenario might be. >> reporter: across town the 44th floor of the trans america building, swat teams were confronted with a gunman and hostage situation. crews had to rap he will down a access shaft, eliminate the gun men and rescue the hostages. the simulations cost about $1 million, paid for by federal grants and private donations. but the experience for the officers is invaluable. >> when the columbine incident happened many officers had never been in a high school before. so we try it to put them in situations they are unfamiliar with, make critical decisions and make those decisions correctly. >> reporter: the urban shield

simulation got underway at 6:00 this morning. they will be running around the clock until 6:00 monday morning. the actress who portrayed the iconic june cleaver from "leave it to beaver" has died. >> "leave it to beaver." barbara billingsley died in her santa monica home today at the age of 94. she portrayed the matriarch of the cleaver family when the show debuted in 1957 until its last season in 1963. before the series billingsley was a model in the 1930s. she was under contract at mgm in 1945 acting in several b movies before moving on to television and mortality. some of the news headlines happening around the bay area and california. the big news of course is the giants. >> reporter: thanks a lot, ken. it was a 4-3 victory. the giants have had four post- season victories so far.

he was with them in the first round of the playoffs in atlanta. he has been with the giants through it all. joining us live from philadelphia, fred inglis, what is the feeling in the giants' clubhouse? >> reporter: well, mark, you know what? it was much calmer. there was some confidence and also some relief in this clubhouse. after all, neither one of these

pitchers, roy halladay or tim lincecum, were the premiere pitchers as advertised. in fact, if you look at tim's numbers, 7 innings, three runs given up and 2 home runs, 6 hits. he walked three but strikes out 8 in those 7 innings. he gets the victory. he was at least as good as roy halladay, who of course came in with a no-hitter in his only other post-season experience. but this was about cody ross and so many others. when we talked to tim, there was a little bit of relief in knowing that this was another torture test. >> yeah, i mean, that's the way we do it, right? more torture in the post- season. >> it looked like you were throwing a loft fastballs early and then you started bringing in the change-up. was that the game plan or the way things just started happening? >> it's just kind of the way things unwrapped. i was just trying to make

here tonight. >> it's the most posh game of the series. it sets the tone for the rest of the series. it doesn't put us in the driver's seat by any means because we are playing a tough team. but it certainly helps when we are going back home tomorrow. >> of course, brian couldn't make it simple. he did strike out the inning in the 9th. he hit a batter before the drama finally ended with a victory. and i have to tell you, mark, walking around here, most of the philly fans were pretty cocky, self-assured this was going to go five, maybe six games at the most. they certainly did not expect roy halladay to lose game 1. the phillies had won 7 straight game 1s in the post-season playoffs all the way back to 2008. they have never lost a game 1 of a playoff series since then. the giants pretty good at it, too. i don't want to say that the giants stole this one. they earned it. ask cody ross, ask tim
