good morning. i'm jade hernandez. we have the latest from the fire. flames forced residents from a four story apartment building. the latest from san francisco straight ahead. the perfect day to switch from the roads to the rails. we'll tell you why coming up in traffic. after the fog yesterday temperatures warm up. we continue today to see a cool pattern. this morning police are investigating a chilling crime where suspects held up victims one just 3 years old.

all ahead on ktvu morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's wednesday october 20th. i'm pam cook. >> and good morning. i'm kraig debro in for dave clark. let's get a quick look at the weather and traffic. good morning, steve. >> all right, kraig, thank you. pam. good morning everyone. fog for everybody. some areas clear upper 40s and low 50s. some reduced visibility to about a quarter mile or less. from santa rosa to san jose around the bay and to the coast once it burns back mid to upper 60s inland. 50s, 60s to near 70s by the beaches. here's tara. okay. thanks, steve. here's a look at the macarthur maze. traffic on the far right hand side as you make your way toward the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a huge back up. look at this. the metering lights have gone on early this morning perhaps due to the injury accident just after the metering lights because we had one lane

blocked. and hopefully that accident is in the clearing stages and your commute will ease up. but it is looking pretty bad as you make your way into san francisco. 6:02. head back to the desk. we're following breaking news in san francisco this moing. a fire at a four story building on hyde street is now prompting evacuations. ktvu's jade hernandez is there on the scene with more information. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the fire was roaring about an hour ago. i'm going to step out of the way. you can actually see firefighters at the top of this four story apartment building. this is still a three alarm fire. we've been checking in with firefighters but they're extremely busy right now. you can see a lot of smoke in the air. very heavy dense black smoke when we arrived about an hour ago. the fire was shooting out of the apartment building. we've watched firefighters as i mentioned climb on to the roof. we also saw firefighters climb into the building that was burning. san francisco police even came by where we're standing this

morning at this intersection asking for residents. they wanted to make sure everyone was evacuated. according to the fire chief we just learned that everyone is out of the building. now this is two buildings over from the st. francis memorial hospital. it's right across the street from the knob hill hotel. gives you an idea of where this apartment building is this morning. there was even a doctor out here trying to make sure that everyone who had been evacuated was safe. he was asking anyone who had to stand out in the street that they want today come inside, sit in the er. just try to make sure that they were warm and away from all that's going on outside here in san francisco. now right now they're throwing water on this building. we're not sure if it's contained. we've seen flames from time to time in intervals shoot out of the building. we do know it's a three alarm fire. we do know everyone is safe and evacuated at this point.

and we'll continue to update you on this fire that broke out around 5:00 a.m. reporting live from san francisco, jade hernandez. back to you in the studio. oakland police looking for two suspects in a home invasion robbery with the victims ranging in age from 3 to 70. happened around 11:00 at 20th avenue and 20th street. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong live on the scene with the very latest on the investigation. claudine. >> reporter: good morning, kraig. the search for the two suspects responsible for this terrifying ordeal continues this morning. we are at the intersection near where all of this happened. a family of 12 held up in a home invasion. it happened overnight. one of the victims told ktvu that a family member was actually outside the home smoking when the two suspects approached around 11:00 last night. the suspects who police say were wearing hoods over their heads forced the family member back into the house. one was carrying a silver revolver. one family member was apparently held at gunpoint

while the suspects went through the house stealing cash and electronic equipment including a computer. there were actually 12 victims inside this house when all of this happened. they range in age from 3 years old to 70 years old. fortunately no one was hurt and the suspect sped away in the silver infinity. we don't have a more details description of the suspects for you right now. but we can tell you that we're looking into a couple of things. one of the victim's told us that he saw the two men who did this last night in this area the night before. they're thinking maybe they were looking for victims the night before. there's also word that these two men may also be connected to other home invasions in the area. so we are contacting oakland police trying to determine if there's any connection to part of a bigger problem. we'll keep you updated here on the morning news. live in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. a homeless migration being blamed for a jump in crime in san francisco.

they were displaced when construction on the terminal started. between september 12 and october 9 transients were responsible for at least 30% of aggravated assaults. those incidents happened in areas popular with tourists including fisherman's wharf and china town. san francisco general hospital asking the public to help identify a female patient in critical condition. she was found on the embarcadero next to a wheelchair on october 9th. there she is. she has not been able to tell hospital workers her name. she is 4'6", weighs 93 pounds and in her 50s or 60s they say. if you recognize her please call san francisco general. later today the giants and phillies battle again at at&t park. san francisco is now just two wins away from the world series. >> giants win game three. >> the giants took game three in the national league championship series in front of

a delirious sell out crowd. san francisco's 3-0 victory gives the giants a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series. the giants are clearly the toast of the town. ktvu.com. well, construction of the landmark suspension tower on the new eastern span of the bay bridge has been briefly delayed. cal tran says an essential piece of equipment must be repaired before a second set of massive sections for the tower can be lifted into place. instead of starting that work today they will now start on sunday. the work will be hard to miss but cal tran is urging drivers to stay focused on the road. >> we want to make motorists aware that this work is going to be happening. if people look at it and slow down traffic could potentially be slowed on the bridge. >> once completed the signature tower will stand 525 feet tall. it's about the same height as the western span suspension towers. okay. back to tara and back to san francisco. got that fire going on strong. roads blocked there. also i don't know if you're going to get to it but the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up as well. >> definitely. we have pretty much a nightmare going on with traffic. if you have to get to downtown

san francisco and you normally take sutter and hyde, make sure you circumvent around this fire because a couple of blocks have been blocked off. you maybe want to take ageary as major thoroughfare into downtown as well as california streets. there should really be no problems there or market if you want to go further south or even broadway if you want to go further north to try to really avoid this whole section around the fire. right now we are going to head to the bay bridge toll plaza. as kraig mentioned it is a complete disaster. we had an earlier injury accident just after the metering lights. so those metering lights went on way early this morning. and you are looking at a 15 to 20 minute delay into san francisco. here's a look at the east shore freeway. typically the traffic on the left hand side is southbound. or westbound actually as you make your way toward the bay bridge toll plaza and onto 580 and 980 and 880. it is looking a little bit

busier than usual. perhaps that accident did have an effect. all right. up last we have san jose, this is 280 and traffic seems to be moving along just fine. 6:10. here's steve. tara, thank you. very good morning to you all. getting the e-mails and tweets. sp weather. i guess there's a lot of halloween parties and events planned for this weekend. now we still have a couple days to iron this out. but the things are changing for the weekend. today we're all right. we have the fog. once that burns back it will be sunny. a lot of rain in southern california. record rain yesterday in san diego, palm springs even santa barbara at a half inch of rain. l.a. about .40. what continues for us is fog. a lot on the coast and especially inland. if kids are like what's the forecast today? it will be chilly in the morning and then mild in the afternoon. and then warm later in the afternoon. so probably wear shorts and not

the woman accused supreme court justice clarence thomas of sexual harassment 20 years ago says she has no intention of saying i'm sorry. anita hill says she received a voice mail from thomas' wife asking for an apology. ktvu's allison burns is following developments in our washington d.c. newsroom. tough get at this hour but does it seem like justice thomas knew his wife was doing this? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kraig. it really is still unclear at this point if justice clarence thomas knew what his wife was doing. but here is part of the phone message that virginia thomas left for anita hill. on the message she said i would love you to consider an apology some time and some full explanation of why you did what you did with my husband. so give it some thought and certainly pray about this and come to understand why you did what you did. mrs. thomas is referring to the emotionally charged clarence thomas confirmation hearing nearly 20 years ago.

anita hill made graphic allegations of sexual harassment. democrats and the media seized on it and thomas called the proceedings a high-tech lynching. >> i think that it is disgusting. i think that this hearing should never occur in america. >> clarence thomas indicated in his recent memoirs that he's still angry about the allegations. his wife who's now a conservative activist has issued a statement about the voice mail saying she was trying to extend an olive branch to anita hill. now i'll have more on why anita hill first called police when she got this message during my next update in about an hour. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. well, the pentagon is now directing the u.s. military to accept openly gay recruits for the first time in the nation's history. that's after a federal judge refused to lift her injunction telling the military to immediately strike down the

don't ask, don't tell policy. the decision will be appealed though. so legal experts are cautioning gays and lesbian that is a successful repeal might put don't ask, don't tell back in place. >> to out yourself now in this short period is not going to insulate you from proceedings to have you discharged from the military later on. it would be a very dangerous thing to do right now. >> president obama has said he wants to repeal the don't ask, don't tell policy but the administration wants the courts to put the policy back in place until congress resolves the issue. today president obama is heading west on a five state, four day campaign swing including california. but now we're learning a democratic fundraiser the president was scheduled to attend in san francisco tomorrow has been moved to palo alto. state leader from san francisco says he's being punished by other democrats in the sate senate because he was the only democrat who did not vote for the budget. now he's been told he's being

stripped of his post as the number two ranking member of the senate. and lawmakers killed the budget bill he introduced to provide tax relief to victims of the san bruno explosion. then they reintroduced the same bill and passed it without his name. election results for the upcoming november 2nd election could be delayed because of the complication of rank choice voting. the ranked choice voting system is being used for the first time in oakland, berkeley and san lee an do. that means outcomes of the mayor's race in oakland and council races in all three cities may not be known on election day. it is 6:19. we have a lot going on out there starting with the giants game. great day to take part but we have the bay bridge toll plaza. >> we have a lot to talk about. with regards to the giants game it is try bart week. this is the third day of it and it really is the perfect opportunity for those of you to

take it because after the game starting time at 5:00 after it lets out the bay bridge will be backed up and it's going to be just a nightmare. bart is running longer trains just so you know that would be a really good option if you're headed out the door right now take bart instead of your car to work this morning if you're headed into san francisco. right now we're going to look at our map. show you the circle is where the fire located. now the top line there is broadway. and i would recommend taking that street if you have to get to downtown morning rather than california which is sort of in between. and then the arrow on the bottom that is actually golden gate. i would advise taking that instead of o farrell to get downtown this morning because you really want to try to avoid all the blocks around this fire which is on hyde between sutter and bush this morning. to the bay bridge toll plaza where we had an earlier injury accident has been cleared. but the damage has been done. those metering lights were on early this morning. and your back up is about 15 to 20 minutes all the way to the

from yesterday. mid and upper 70s inland. 6 0z, 70s around the bay and 50s, 60s to near 70 by the beaches. drizzle returns with more fog on thursday. looks like we get a shot of rain early friday morning, a break friday night. clouds roll in saturday. rain on sunday. well, chrysler says this week it will start naming its fiat dealers for sales. wants the building to make fiat in 19 buildings. they have to have a separate showroom and sale area which goes on sale here in the u.s. in december. san francisco supervisor john introducing legislation that would require contractors to hire a specific number of city residents for all publicly funded construction projects. right now the city says contractors should make a good faith effort to hire qualified workers who live in the city for at least half of their public construction jobs. but a recent survey shows only

20% of hiring is local. the board will take up the proposal next month. california's problems it remains et state most americans say they would like to live if they didn't live in their own states. topped the poll the last seven years and it's the first choice of adults 45 and younger. hawaii is second. and the number one choice by people over the age of 45. florida third, colorado, arizona, north carolina, oregon and texas round out the top eight. in one bay area city some people are actually complaining about parent volunteers at school. what the remaining two uc berkeley student wills go on trial. family happy a trial date has been set.

6:26. let's head back to the desk. an employees union is protesting a new program that puts parent volunteers into positions on campus. in some cases the programs put parent volunteers in positions previously held by employees whose jobs were eliminated by budget cuts. the union says the school can't do that. the school board president says what's needed is both sides to sit down and work out a solution. there's finally a trial date set for the two uc berkeley graduates still held in iran prison. their families are actually happy about it. the mother of shane says the trial dates of november 6 has been set for bower and josh. bower's mother says although she doesn't believe the two men are guilty of any crime, at least having a trial date set means something is happening with their case. secretary of state hillary clinton reacted to the news of the trial. >> we regret that they and their families are being subjected to a criminal system that we do not think in any way

fire and pulled firefighters out of the building at this point. i know tara was talking about the traffic problems attached to this because this intersection is closed. even down the street is blocked off so the firefighters can work. now right here at hyde and bush is the st. francis memorial hospital located right at the corner. that gives you an idea where this fire broke out at 5:00 this morning. this four story apartment building is just a few buildings southeast of st. francis. we spoke to a resident who said flames just crawled from floor to floor. >> we heard a bunch of alarms going off so we came down here to check it out. and when we got here we saw a lot of black smoke coming up and then we saw fire boom out of the window. >> reporter: residents have been evacuated. so far no injuries have been reported. still a lot of onlookers who came out to see what was going on. a few residents of nearby buildings were worried about

their own apartment. we spoke to the fire chief who gave us an update on their progress about 30 minutes ago. >> we just asked all the fire department individuals in the building to come out. building we're still working on but the fire building is at this point un. [ indiscernible ] for our firefighters to work in there safely. >> reporter: this apartment building as the fire chief mentioned on either side of the burning building. we spoke to one resident who lived in one of those buildings. he told us he heard noises, came outside and saw smoke. he didn't see any flames but said firefighters arrives very quickly. they started attacking this fire as soon as they arrived. one doctor from the hospital actually came out and tried to find as many evacuees as possible. he offered them some safety and warmth inside of their er. he said he was just trying to make sure all of those evacuees were safe where firefighters worked. we'll continue to update you from hyde and bush.

and as soon as we get more and an update we'll bring it to you. live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. police could release more details into the discovery of human remains. a team searched the remote area yesterday for additional bones and other evidence. two hikers found the remains this past sunday. police say the bones were from an adult and appears they have within in the area for year or two. police investigating another suspicious body. a body found in a creek. they have not ruled out homicide as a cause of death. the man's name is being with held until his family is notified. police are asking anyone with information to come forward. a nonprofit group says it will no longer offer searches for a missing boy. instead founders for the citizen for the law wants to start a summer youth camp. she also says the investigation

needs to be moved to maryland where her foster father now lives. now ross told investigators that he disappeared from a parking lot last august. he was arrested but released after prosecutors did not file any charges. oakland police say ross remains a prime suspect. we do have an update on a pair of restaurant robberies in concord that we first told you about yesterday morning. police have now released these photos taken of the suspects by a surveillance camera. investigators say the two armed men entered a round table pizza just before 9:00 monday night and took money from a safe and the cash register. then about 40 minutes later police say the same suspects robbed a subway sandwich shop on concord avenue. no one was hurt in either incident. bart breaks ground this morning on the new multimillion dollar connector between the coliseum bart station and the oakland airport. right now bart riders who go to the coliseum bart station have to take a bus from the station to the airport.

project is expected to cost $484 million but create thousands of badly needed jobs. today's ground breaking is set for 10:30 this morning. 6:35 is the time right now. might want to avoid parts of san francisco because of the fire we've been talking about. tara. >> that's correct. this fire is on hyde street between sutter and bush. as jade mentioned just a bitting a they have blocked off a couple of streets there. so you definitely want to navigate your way around the area. as we take a look at our maps we can show you exactly where there is the fire. california runs west to east just north of there toward downtown. but you might want to shoot a little further north on broadway right here. or if you take o farrell normally right here you might want to try golden gate instead just to really completely avoid this area. again, the vicinity of the fire is on hyde between sutter and bush. the metering lights have been turned on for quite some time and back up extending to the

warm for most. especially inland with 70s. by the coast still dealing with a little bit of fog. very close to what we experienced yesterday. that's fog then sunny and kind of hazy mild to warm. foggy conditions though. a lot of reports coming in with fog and reduced visibility from the south bay and north bay and around the bay and also on the coast. once that burns back we'll have 7 0z. concord's forecast under mostly clear skies at 7:00 a.m. 50. 70 at noon. that's the spirit. 51 in the city right now. everyone is within a couple degrees. livermore concord at 50. 30 in tahoe. they were 27 last hour. 44 eureka. chilly there and a lot of cool readings in southern california where the system spinning right there. our pat earn begins to change tomorrow. system comes in late thursday into friday. it will fall apart but still drizzle and very light rain out of that early friday morning the systems behind that that have a lot more up you have. late clearing for some on the coast.

they need third-degree game. the first one of the home stand. this was clutch. see us in the world series. see us. >> reporter: the last time they were in the world series former giants star barry bonds was there and he was on hand for yesterday's game. he got a round of applause from fans. a crowd of 43,000 mostly giant fans packed at&t ballpark yesterday to watch the giants shut out the phillies 3-0. of course the park filled with orange and black. and fans were going crazy for of course none other than the man who is currently on fire, cody ross. yesterday's shut out gives the giants a 2-1 lead in a series of seven. giants now just two wins away from an appearance in the world series something the club hasn't done since 2002. of course it's been about eight years since the giants played this late in october. which is now a good thing for local businesses as well as fans. >> the last month of the season has been as they say torture. but at the same time the playoffs have been fun to watch. >> normally this time of year we have a term for it called

has been arrested in redwood city after he asked police for a ride home while allegedly carrying cocaine in his pocket. now police say the man left a party in san carlos early sunday and walked up to a patrol car, pressed his face against the driver side window and asked officers for a ride to danville. police asked him if he was carrying anything illegal. they say his conflicting yes and then no answer prompted a search. he's been charged with felony cocaine possession. a federal court has sentenced three men for illegally hunting deer in yosemite national park. this is a picture of a california fish and game warden who tracked the poachers. he is holding the antlers of one of the three deer that was killed. chad gill rich, his brother christopher and their friend 36- year-old learned yesterday they'll have to pay almost $60,000 in fines. the brothers will also have to serve jail time. it's been long believed by some that the ancient mayan calendar predicts the world will end in december 2012.
