san francisco along northbound 101 is looking frit good coming up to the downtown area with no major problems. however, we have a problem in san jose with some developing news. and some streets closed off because of police situation. let's go live to ktvu's tara live on the scene. tara. >> reporter: well, sal, we just spoke to police and they say that this suspect is responding but it appears he may have been injured in this shootout. now we are here in a san jose neighborhood. some people have been evacuated. right behind me here you can see two blocks from where we're standing is where the suspect is in a car. he is armed and in a standoff with police. they are trying to get him to turn himself in. you can see that they've cornered a several blocks here around seminole and sam tampa way. you can see there are cops littered throughout the entire neighborhood. some over here and some over in this section as well. there are dozens and dozens of

officers and s.w.a.t. teams that have just stormed this area. so a heavy, heavy police presence. now authorities have just loaded up with more ammunition apparently. and rifle specialists are hunkered down on the second story of a nearby home planning their strategy. now san jose police zeroed in on this man yesterday. they were trying to serve him a warrant for his arrest, but the suspect got away. authorities spotted him this morning in his car. they approached him, but he took off. now a gunfire was exchanged. one neighbor told us that she heard as many as 50 shots around 4:00 this morning. flying glass actually hit one of the officers. he was hurt and transported to a nearby hospital. now police have established a perimeter around the crime scene here. they have pushed it back a couple of times. neighbors as we mentioned have been evacuated. and we just saw a mobile command unit arrive. so, again, police are trying to get this gunman to surrender but they say they are prepared

in case he doesn't. live in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. two robbery suspects led oakland police on a wild chase and search that prompted a lockdown on allen dale elementary school. they were spotted in a car near 25th and foothill. they then crashed and then took off running. police found one suspect hiding on a roof with the help of a police helicopter. the other suspect got away. police say the men are responsible for three robberies in east oakland yesterday. a new report compares violence on the streets of oakland to violence in a war zone. reporting in the last ten years more than 1,000 people have been killed in oakland. compare that is to the 996 american troops killed in combat in afghanistan since 2001. time now 6:04. police are asking the public to help identify a robbery suspect who shot and killed a store clerk. take a look at this surveillance video released by police. the robbery and shooting

happened at the fiesta latino market few days ago. the suspect shot the 32-year- old clerk even though that clerk handed over the money. if you have any information, you're asked to call the police. police are searching for two suspects in a crime spree in marin county this week. a 70-year-old woman's 1998 minivan was carjacked monday night. and yesterday police say two people that robbed the u.s. bank in novato it might have been a coincidence that the suspects were seen leaving the scene in a 1998 minivan. they're not positive it is the same van. they are looking for the missing one. it's a blue-green california license plate number 6cim754. if you see it you are urged to call police. the giants could be hours away from a long awaited trip to the world series. that's after last night's

[ cheering and applause ] last night's game was a nail biter coming down to the ninth inning when it was tied 5-5. but thanks to juan uribe's one out sacrifice fly it allowed huff to advance home giving the giants what they need today win game four by a score of 6-5. that victory puts the giants one step closer to winning their fourth national league pennant since moving out west. >> that's got to be an instant classic right there. the crowd was into the whole game. get up early. this year's been matched up pitchers duals all the way around. tonight was more of an

offensive display. give them a lot of credit. they kept battling back and coming back. we did the same. games like that always turn out to be. executive. the price to get in there $30,000. most people we talked to in the neighborhood didn't even know the president was coming. >> the other morning there were a lot of people at the home standing around the driveway and we were walking our kids to school. so we knew something was going on there. and now it's wonderful to hear that that's what it was. it's an honor. >> i didn't know. but it's pretty cool. i'll tell my mom and she'll be pretty excited. >> the president is expected to land at sfo at 3:00 today. he's going to be in attarton at 5:40 and scheduled for dinner in palo alto at 7:00. he'll spend the night in san francisco. new surveillance video caught glimpse the moment a pedestrian was struck by a san jose cruiser. it happened monday night. we got the video from a surveillance camera across the street. it shows the cruiser hitting 63- year-old who fell to the ground. seconds later an officer emerged from the car and leaned

over the victim. the father of three remains in critical condition. his family is hoping for answers. >> we would like to know if some witnesses were there at that particular time who could tell us he or she or some other car passing by what happened. >> there is no crosswalk at 14th and east santa clara street. san jose police say the officer was driving the cruiser that hit him. and they're still investigating the cause of the crash. it's told a statewide earthquake drill this morning is going to help people get ready for the next big one. expected to take part in the second annual great california shake out including schools, businesses and government businesses in the bay area. at 10:21 this morning participants will be asked to drop and cover and practice how to protect themselves from falling objects during an earthquake. bart will also stop its trains for one minute as part of this morning's drill. bart carries about 360,000

travelers every day and remains a vital link of continuous service after the earthquake 21 years ago. it's hoped today's drill will remind passengers about what to do on bart the next time the next one hits. 6:10. sal is here with a look at a busy east bay freeway as well as the toll plaza. sal. >> kraig and claudine, thank you very much. we just mentioned bart. i want to encourage you to take bart today if you're coming in and out of the city because of today's game. there's going to be a lot of traffic there. but we're going to start in the south bay. northbound 280 getting up to the 880 interchange. that traffic moves well. if you're driving in from the santa cruz mountains, the highway 17 commute a little bit foggy there as our expert bay area meteorologist steve will tell us a little more about the fog and where it is in just a moment. this is a look at westbound bay bridge. traffic is backing up a little bit here. no problems coming in to san francisco. no major problems any way. and if you're driving on westbound interstate 80 that traffic looks pretty good heading out to the macarthur

know. >> can you give us an idea of the police presence? >> we could consider this to be pretty much full tactical call out at this point. we're trying to take this individual who is obviously armed and exchanged gunfire with an officer into custody as safely and quickly as possible. >> all right. you are listening to a press conference from san jose police this morning as they talk about a suspect they are watching right now who exchanged several shots, dozens we heard with the police officer this morning. right now that suspect is sitting in a car. police have surrounded that car with a full tactical operation. tara is there. she's going to bring us details coming up in a few minutes. 6:18. the military's don't ask don't tell policy is once again being enforced. late yesterday the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals had ruled don't ask don't tell was

unconstitutional and ordered to be suspended. the president said he wants the policy repealed but only after review and an act of congress. time now 6:18. even though we're still about a week and a half away from election day, voting is already underway here in california and across the country. more than three million americans have participated in early voting so far this year. ktvu's allison burn asks live in our washington d.c. newsroom tracking the turn out. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, claudine. in california more than half a million people have already voted. now the secretary of state in california is not revealing whether they're democrats or republicans, but we do have some more specific information about turn out for some other parts of the country. in all 36 states and washington d.c. have some form of early voting. so far democrats nationwide are casting more pre-election day ballots. but republican turn out is up over the 2008 elections.

political parties and get out the vote groups are stepping up their campaigns for early voting. one ad from a group called vote naked illinois seems to be getting the most buzz counting the benefits of mailing in your ballots. >> waiting in line or putting on pants. it's so easy. it's so private. you can vote naked. >> reporter: again, that means voting from home. in all 30% or more of all votes are expected to be cast early and with control of congress at stake. many states are expecting a record midterm election turn out. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. thanks, allison. a new poll in the california governor's race shows democrat jerry brown has opened up a lead over republican meg whitman with just 12 days to go to election day. last month public policy institute of california poll showed brown in a virtual tie with whitman. but now brown has an 8 point

lead. 44% for him. 36 for whitman. support among latinos is being credited for brown's lead. the race in the u.s. senate has also tightened. boxer's lead was 7 points. it's now 5. 43% for boxer, 38 for fiorina. prop 19 is losing support. the ballot measure would legalize marijuana if approved. the public policy institute of california found 44% in favor of prop 19 down from 52% in september. 49% say they now oppose it. it's 6:21. let's head to sal. >> good morning. you know this morning we're getting more and more people on the road. but it's happening gradually. this is just the way we want it to get on the road westbound 24 certainly more people and every time i've come to this shot you see more and more people there. but it's not stop and go yet any way. it should be in the next 20 to 25 minutes or so in some areas. so just try and leave the house

as early as possible obviously. this is a look at the commute on interstate 80 westbound. that's also getting more filled in especially after 580 joins it at the hoffman split getting to the mcarthur maze. and this morning at the toll plaza looks like they've switched on the metering lights. backed up to about middle of the parking lot. once you get on to the bridge it looks good. i've been checking on a couple things. that accident in contra costa county at 160 is still there. it's not causing major delay on 160 and little bit of a rubber necker delay. 6:22 now. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. mostly cloudy morning. only livermore now says clear. but i bet the low clouds make it there as well. concord was clear. now they're cloudy as well. temperatures go up when the clouds come in. around the bay we have low clouds. fog has lifted because there's a front coming in. weak front but still fog right there speaking of. mostly cloudy, cool and breezy day. not only low clouds but local drizzle. high and mid-level clouds could give the north bay little light rain. not a big deal on this guy right there. still going to cloud us up.

tonight parents in alameda are invited to share their thoughts on the school district's plan to cut the budget. the district is planning to cut pay for administrators and shutting down swimming facilities. district officials say cuts could be avoid the if voters approve a partial tax in march of next year. a partial tax measure on last june's ballot would have provided funding but fell short of passing. the historic ton gastro room restaurant might not be safe from demolition but it could be relocated. san francisco's planning commission meets tonight to vote on a $130 million renovation plan for the hotel which has housed that tiki style restaurant since 1945. the remodeling calls for tearing down a tower and permanently shutting down the famous restaurant. now the hotel says a local restaurant owner wants to buy and relocate the room. details could be released at tonight's commission meeting. 6:27. you could see a sea of orange and black when you head to work or school today. those amazing san francisco giants are one win away from

joining us on ktvu morning news. i'm kraig debro. >> and i'm claudine wong. time now 6:30. we are following breaking news from san jose. gunfire, a tense standoff and evacuations in the area of seminole and tampa way this morning. police just finished a news conference. part of which you just saw right here on channel 2. ktvu channel 2 reporter live with new details from the scene. tara. >> reporter: well, that's right, kraig. we are learning new information about this suspect. apparently police tried to serve him a warrant around 2:00 this morning for attempted murder. that is when the suspect took off and now he's hunkered down in his car which is located about two blocks from where we're standing. there's an incredibly heavy police presence. you can see the cop cars right here on this block as well as over here if we make it past the reporters here you can see that there are more cop cars as well as behind us here. a lot of activity right here. they brought the s.w.a.t. team and rifle specialists as well. if we look at video we shot

when we first arrived, you can see this has been an ongoing scene since about 2:00 this morning. authorities spotted the suspect around 2:00 as we mentioned in his parked car. they approached him, gunfire was exchanged. one neighbor told us he heard as many as 50 shots around 4:00 this morning. we just spoke with sergeant lopez of san jose police department. here's what he had to say. >> the suspect is still currently in the vehicle. we've just done basic tactical operations. started setting up containment. evacuating some folks. this is an ongoing event. >> reporter: now flying glass hit one officer. he was hurt and taken to a nearby hospital. police have evacuated some neighbors. we're told 15 people to be exact. they have established a perimeter around this area and they have pushed it back a couple times obviously they don't want anyone to be in the line of fire. a mobile command unit has just arrived and obviously they

would like this man to surrender. but they are not taking any chances. and we will have more information coming up for you later as it becomes available to us. we are told that this suspect is responding from the car. at times he is sitting and other times he is moving around the vehicle. but we are not sure if he has been injured or not. we're here live in san jose. ktvu channel 2 news. all right. time now 6:32. the oakland tribune reports that two home invasion style robberies are linked. the first happened shortly before 1:00 a.m. tuesday morning. and the other happened less than a mile away around 10:45 that same night. in both incidence police say two men armed took cash and electronics from the home. nobody was hurt. so far no arrests have been made. police have arrested a stanford university employee in connection with a recent burglary of a palo alto home. detectives arrested 20-year-old

jose per man doze for a burglary on hamilton avenue earlier this month. police believe he entered the home through an open window. he took several items including keys to a car. the family was in the home but was asleep. that car was later recovered. police say the suspects worked at the university dining hall. berkeley police say they have arrested four east bay teenagers in connection with a string of armed robberies. police identified the teens as hall, polk and twin brothers glovers. they're all 18 or 19 years old. police say they robbed five different victims last week as the victims were out for a walk and they used a shotgun to threaten the victims. facing attempted murder charges for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend's 12-year-old son. police say the 29-year-old and his brother 25-year-old perez brothers took the boy to a remote canyon and stabbed him at least 20 times. it happened last weekend after police say perez had a fight with his girlfriend.

the boy is in critical condition at santa clara county medical center. both men are in jail. the maverick surf competition set to begin this season. but this time it will be under new management. that's because after much fighting, a new group calling itself the half-moon bay surf group has been awarded a permit to produce the world famous event this time around. the previous producer maverick search ventures was criticized in part for failing to pay vendors on time. the event gets a new name, the mavericks international. and the contest window will be shorter from december 1st to february 28th. the giants are now just one win away from the world series. that's after that thrilling victory last night in the bottom of the ninth at at&t park. >> carrying home the winning run in game four giants win 6- 5. >> there it was. that exciting finish. that winning run in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the phillies 6-5. that was a big

distraction. look at westbound bay bridge. you can see traffic there is going to be backed up for about a ten minute delay. no major problems as you drive into san francisco. but, again, we're warning you about another day of giants baseball with the game starting at about 5:00. a little bit before that. you start seeing traffic getting into the city well before that about 3:00 or so. and on the peninsula traffic is looking good on the 101 and 280. no major problems. little slowing. you see yell yellow on the map. in the south bay northbound 85 beginning to slow down so are portions of 101 approaching 880. here's steve. there's something going on today about 5:00 at the ballpark? >> yes. my poetry reading class. you want to come? >> i do indeed. thanks very much. well, how you dressed last night is exactly how you should dress for the game tonight. it won't be very warm. mostly cloudy, cool, breezy. and that's not only for san francisco, that's just about

for everybody else. we have a rather chilly air mass in place because a cold front -- what? a cold front? yes. actually it's a cool front. it's picked up the fog we had the last couple days. lifts and up around 2,000 feet. supplies over the coastal hills. this could give about a tenth of an inch of rain in the bay. but it's run intoog a split jet. so you take a lot of energy away from it. it is knocking the high out of here and set the stage for a system on saturday and a stronger one on sunday. result of a cool day. low overcast. some sun but not much. low clouds and higher clouds coming in later on. it will be cool. 50s and 60s for many. 52 san jose which is the coolest. now you don't usually see that. the reason being they had mostly clear skies for a while. if you have the cloud cover then you're i would into the mid and upper 50s. usually it's the other way around. i did see i think 49 at cooper tin no. 45 in tahoe. you're okay friday, saturday. but sunday things could change

2nd election. people are going to pay big money to dine with the president tonight. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in downtown palo alto. we've had a chance to chat with residents here about the president. president barack obama is expected to land at sfo this afternoon and he's scheduled to make his way to palo alto later this evening for a fund raising dinner. now that dinner will be held at google executive mayer's home. 50 democratic big spenders will be sitting down with the president tonight. price tag $30,000 a plate. the dinner was originally slated to be held in san francisco. but was moved maybe in part to the giants hoopla going on in the city. before the dinner mr. obama will attend a fundraiser for district attorney running for state attorney general. cost of taking a picture with the president $6500. a bit cheaper than dining with the president though. we came to downtown palo alto to speak to residents to see how they feel about this private visit the president is

making. >> he's got you know an incredibly heavy load of stuff. i just feel like some of the hard things they're doing they haven't been explained well to the general public. >> reporter: the president is flying in from the state of washington. he's expected to land at sfo around 3:00. and after both fundraisers tonight in palo alto and atherton, he's expected to spend the night in san francisco. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. opposing proposition 23. would suspend the state's landmark climate law. poll shows 48% of likely voters oppose proposition 23. 37% support it. prop 23 would suspend the greenhouse gas law from being implemented until the state's unplace of employment rate falls to 5.5% for an entire

that puts the number at 452,000. dropping to 4.44 million. the overall number remains stuck at levels that indicates while companies are not laying off more workers, they aren't hiring many workers either. let's take a look at how the markets are doing. analysts expected stocks to climb thanks to another batch of strong earnings reports. this morning we talked about the mixed jobless numbers and growth in china appears to be slowing but companies earning the reports seem to show consumers are buying goods and that is good news. yet another recall for toyota this morning. this time the notice effects nearly three quarters of a million cars and suvs in the u.s. and 600,000 in japan for problems with brake fluid and fuel pumps. the effected cars are the 2005 and 2006 model avalon. 2004-2006 nonhybrid highlanders. and lexus rx330s and 2006 lexus

number of bay area strip malls. we are told there are computer gambling operations across the east bay in oakland, concord and antioch. so ktvu stopped by one facility when it got there he found lights and computers on but nobody was inside. now the sign outside says luck lucky business services means providing services one woman he talked to disputed that. >> strictly gambling. and i went all the time. people in wheelchairs. and most of the people that enter this establishment was low income people. >> our crews also stopped by another facility in oakland that was not open last night. there was the sign on the window that said it would reopen soon as a place called hurricane bingo. san jose mayor chuck reed wants to block bonus payments to thousands of city retirees because of the pension system's projected $2 billion shortfall. currently retirees receive an

expa payment on top of their monthly checks in years when investment returns exceed expectations. next week the city council will decide whether to suspend the bonus checks or restructure the benefit. a new report shows california's unemployment insurance fund will be more than $10 billion in debt by the end of the year. that's because the state is currently paying out more in unemployment benefits than it collects from employers. nonpartisan legislative analyst office recommends lawmakers reduce benefit payments and increasing taxes on employers as a way to reduce the fund's deficit. in kansas city, missouri, a chimp that escaped fr owner terrorized a neighborhood and now could be getting a new home. take a look at this video captured by a police camera of that chimp takes its aggressions out on the garbage can. it escaped from a cage in the owner's truck. the owner was told to keep the chimp out of city limits after biting a girl in 1995. now there's a call to put the chump in the kansas city zoo where he was sent after the
