>> chaz chillens with the game winner last year when the raiders went a denver, a touchdown with a half a minute to go and the raiders won 20- 19. the year before, darren mcfadden, a huge game and the raiders blew denver out and they should have won there in 2007. shanan the time-out. the second field goal off upright. welcome to our "silver and black" show, greg papa rejoined by the super bowl winning quarterback of the raiders, jim plunkett. now going to invesco field, the raiders have been quite successful the last six years. >> it's not quite as intimate there, the fans aren't on top of you like they are at mile high stadium and the raiders tend to play well up there. they're both struggling with
3:32 pm
ups and downs during the course of the season that it's hard to explain. but denver is 2-4. same as the raiders. >> the broncos are going to have their very first game within the afc west now. raiders tried to make it back- to-back last week. they could not get in the end zone a couple of times and wound up with a very difficult 17-9 loss. >> very tough loss, opportunity to get in first place in the division. time the kansas city chiefs with their first victory. but you play on foreign soil so to speak and the 49ers played tough defense in particular. two funks in the early -- field goals in the early part of game when they had the opportunity to score two touchdowns and that kept the san francisco 49ers in the game. the second half was a different story and the 49ers offense took control of the game. >> the raiders have been up and down week to week. they felt like they should have won in arizona in week three and last week at candle stick.
3:33 pm
they beat st. louis in week two, lost at arizona, played well at houston and still lost there. beat san diego and lost at san francisco last week. so the raiders are right in the same situation the broncos are in at 2-4. kansas city, a 3-0 start but they have lost two in a row, jim. denver, up and down. lose two and then win and then lose. >> running the football is their trouble. normally they're one of the top rushers in the entire league, but from year, they can't get the running game going. they're relying on kyle orton and so far, doing a very good job throwing the football. orton, nine touchdowns and 1900 yards i believe. >> he's averaging almost 324 yards a game passing and they are going empty set. putting the quarterback in the shotgun. they got him in the jay cutler deal from chicago.
3:34 pm
they bring in brady quinn and they draft tim tebow, but very quietly, kyle orton is having a superb year. >> he continues to improve under the offense. whatever they're doing, he seems to fit it in the passing game. a lot of crossing routes and underneath stuff and also getting the ball down the field. brandon lloyd averaging 19 yards a catch. >> we will see orton play most of the snaps under center for the denver broncos. but they have the tebow factor. on "silver and black," we'll talk to raiders coach tom cable about defending orton and tebow and how are the raiders going to play at quarterback? gradkowski bad shoulder, might we see kyle boulder on sunday? three quarterbacks are needed and three quarterbacks the raiders have. tom cable is next on the "silver and black." >> i know how close we are as do the players and we keep fighting.
3:35 pm
3:37 pm
we have a good string of quarterbacks and i can put either one of guys in. >> like i said from the beginning, we have a bunch of quarterback room, a lot of knowledge and experience. i take the same approach regardless of on the first, the second and this third because you never know weapon your opportunity is going to come and at the same time, to help the guys, you need to be knowledgeable with the game plan and the defenses they're doing. when it comes to that, that's being a pro. that's part of your job. >> the raiders have three quarterbacks with starting experience and three guys you
3:38 pm
can win with and now into denver, you're not sure who's going to play quarterback. welcome become to the "silver and black show," greg papa and jim plunkett. we're joined by the coach tom cable. there's a history that three quarterbacks do play in a single season, coach, was that the thought process to get kyle boller? now you have a guy at number three who's started at one in the league. >> we wanted to make it as good as a position as we could and that's the reason for bringing kyle in. the way that things are unfolding here, it's a good thing we did. they've had the experience and the ability to win in the league. so as we get ready to you know, for the week and prepare this thing, we have some uncertainty. but we're fortunate because of the problem having three good players or three guys that can go win for you. >> it has to be awfully lucky to get through the entire season with one quarterback anyway. injuries occur. but anyway, last week's game. the problems you had on
3:39 pm
offense, running the ball and throwing the ball, they put a lot of pressure, got in the red zone and came away with two field goals early in the game. if those had been touchdowns, the 49ers would have had a much higher hill to climb. how the correct the problems? >> if first thing the red zone thought. it's the execution down there with the quarterback. we had plenty of opportunities, we had some guys open and we didn't read it right and just didn't make the plays that were there. and then in regards to you know, just playing offensively, how can we get back in rhythm and have some rhythm between the pass and the run? we have to find that balance and it's there. we thought we'd get a bunch of chunk plays thrown. the first play of the game, we underthrew the post-route and that kind of started us on the pattern of not getting it to where with we needed it to be or the wrong receiver.
3:40 pm
i think the red zone thing can be handled by the problems and the situation will present to us, but when the opportunity comes, we have to execute. >> talk about denver's defense a little bit because they've lost a lot of personnel. elvis dumervil was lost in training camp, robert ayres is out and now a defensive strategy last week. they have shifting in and out of it. what are you seeing from don martindale the defensive coordinator? >> they have been in a 3-4 defense and with the injuries, they're an even front team in the game. coverage-wise, they tied them together. they're a man coverage team anyway and that wasn't a difficult task for them. the front last week was what we see every day from our team. there's some familiarity with it. but i expect to see the 3-4 team they've ban and this will be a front we have to adjust to. >> offensively, they remind me of san diego, they're going to throw the football. they have difficulty running. you had problems with rivers on the passing game.
3:41 pm
>> that one and if you go back before josh became the head coach at denver and he was in new england, we played him here and if you remember that game, they shut us out and went to a no huddle offense a lot like phillip did with san diego. they're good at throwing the football, good, good receiving core. get after the quarterback and play some coverage. >> orton, averaging almost 324 yards a game, but they have the backup tim tebow and last week they unveiled more of the tebow package. we've seen seen it throughout the year a little bit. but last week coach, eight plays he was in for, two plays in each quarter and they go to the unbalanced line with the tebow package. how do you defend that when tebow comes in as the quarterback and takes the direct snap from center? >> the first thing is know that it's coming. the more comfortable they get, that style of play, you can expect to see them expand on the package. we're certainly going to be ready for it. we've got a package for it put together and you know, just
3:42 pm
know that it's coming and your last week was eight snaps, this week, maybe 10 or 12. >> one game out of first place. the whole division is struggling and a lot of things that are happening to the raiders are happening to other teams. >> they are. ours is disappointing because we know we're there right now. if we make a kick in arizona or score on sunday evening, it's a bigger hill than they can climb out of. we're 3-3 rather than 2-4. we've had our chances and not been able to finish the deal and until we continue pounding on the rock and close the games out. you're going to have the ups and downs. but i know how close we are as do the players and just keep fighting. it's a crazy division. but it's one that you can go win and that is our goal. >> last week against the niners on defense, you played a terrific football game with the exception again of four explosive plays. you lost josh morgan in the zone, he gets twisted around the middle of the field.
3:43 pm
crabtree, the big touchdown in the zone, vernon davis in the backside screen pass to the tight end. you lost frank gore on the big run. otherwise, you played a great game. but the big plays keep cropping up to hurt you. >> we talked at it at halftime. we had played really well until then. we let up on them. we talked about that. if we stay focused and don't let up. sure enough in the second half, we don't play right and gore gets out on us. we lose the tight ends in coverage and the one good post, we don't communicate that right and we didn't do it. >> matt shaw necessary see, his "silver and black show" in a minute here. number 77 is show up, he's a guy in the base defense that first and second down, but he leads the team in quarterback sacks. looks pretty well rounded for you. >> he's playing both, very, very well. i mean, he's playing the run extremely well and he's rushing the passer on first and second
3:44 pm
down. he does come out in the nickel situation, but he has been the one guy most productive in terms of rushing the passer in first and second down. but the thing that draws us to him, he's playing the run as well as anybody on the team. >> he's got four quarterback sacks as well. good luck in denver this week. when we come back, we'll be joined by number 77 matt shaughnessy will make his "silver and black show" debut coming up. in fact, the pro football writers association voted on the all rookie team. and now you're playing as a starter. is your career developing the way you'd like it to be? >> you always want to get better and that's what i want to continue with you. keep getting -- continue with. keep getting better and better.
3:47 pm
matt shaughnessy showed off the speed and his power on that sack of alex smith last sunday, up field rush on joe staley and powered into the quarterback alex smith and pulled him down with one hand making his "silver and black show," show debut, second year lineman matt shaughnessy, welcome first of all and that was impressive. that sack of smith. joe staley, you web right at him and just powered him. >> i was playing the run first and i reacted. >> the week before, pure speed when you got rivers down. you went around brandon dam
3:48 pm

3:49 pm
defensive end and your playing time was sparse. but since quinnton grove got shut, you're playing a lot -- hurt, you're playing a lot now. you're still coming out on nickel. >> the last four games, 40, 42 reps. before that, around 20, 25. >> is that keeping you fresh of course? i mean, you're not in the base defense on first and second down, they take you out and bring in trevor and cam goes down and plays in the sand on the ground. you must be fresh playing some of the snaps. >> fresh always, we have good conditioning out there and coach always has us running so conditioning is not a factor. >> you're always in a four point stance. the two hands down and you get real low. where's that come from? you always do that? >> i think the coach -- taught me a little bit and i did a little bit in college. but more of just playing around. but i learned it when i got here and got my power foot and everything and got going. >> why did you laugh?
3:50 pm
is that something you think about? >> in college we had a name for it. we called it the black pack. >> black pantser stance. >> the kid was a converted running back and he didn't flow what he was doing -- know what he was doing. that's what he called it. >> leverage-wise, so low, i mean, it must help you get off the ball and get low. the low man wins in football. you are low when you come out of the stance and your two hands are on the ground. >> yeah, that helps you stay low and keeps the pad level even so you hit the target every time. >> tell me about your career. last year, you flashed quite a bit. you had a great rookie year. in fact, the pro football writers association voted you on the all rookie team. four quarterback sacks and a fumbling recovery and 10 stuffs on the year and now a starter, is your career developing the way you want it to be? >> i think it's going pretty well. you always want it to be better and i hope to continue that, keep getting better and better. >> grew up in no witch,
