where dozens of cars have been damaged from a fire and jade hernandez is live at the scene with more on the investigation. >> reporter: good morning, tori. firefighters are gone at this hour. we can show you the four cars that were damaged right here. a fire investigator is expected to be out here in just a little bit. we do have exclusive video of a resident who captured the flames. intense flames. the call came into dispatch at 3:50 and dumped fire which spread to the carport and fires. firefighters are not sure where this fire originated just yet. the battalion chief told us this morning, this is a suspicious fire and the fire inspector will be out here later to determine the cause. four vehicles were destroyed. a car, suv, truck, and a van. many more residents tried to save their own cars and suvs by

pulling them away from the carport. several residents reported hearing a loud explosion but they did not know where it was coming from. >> it was like a boom. i thought it was a shot gun at first. and then my car alarm started going off. i thought it was some sort of earthquake or something. >> reporter: you are looking at the only apartment that had had fire and smoke damage. 20 residents were evacuated and all of the residents except to that one apartment, all of that residents were allowed back inside their townhome this morning. no one was hurt. firefighters put out the flames in about seven minute. back to you. >> thank you, jade. now, overnight ktvu news confirmed reports of a very disturbing attack in the east bay. the victim, a nurse at the jail. the accused attacker is a jail inmate. ktvu's paul chambers is in

martinez with more. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're working very hard to get as much information as we can. we put a call in the sheriff's office that has yet to be returned. people leaving today, they do not want to talk about it. this is what we know. sometime last night, an inmate was being checked into the detention facility here in martinez. police say that inmate flew into a rage and then attacked a nurse and brutally hurt her. we don't know her condition. we do know she was badly beaten up. we do not know the name of the inmate. we don't know the nail. nurse and we don't have any information about her condition. we're staying on top of this. there has been a change of guard here. guards coming in don't know anything about it. guards going out don't want to talk about it. i will continue to try to get

information and give it to you when i get it. back to you. >> thank you, paul. authorities are still looking for a 13-year-old southern california girl and there is an amber alert for her. it was issued about 1:30 this morning. a short time later, the girl's father posted a very emotional message online. >> you have to come home. turn around and come home. you have many options to choose from. please, all of your friends and family are worried sick about you. >> now, the federal is miranda hamfill. her parents -- the girl is miranda hamfill. her parents reported missing her on sunday, and they say she left with this man, lopez, after he befriended her on the internet and san bernardino authorities say lopez has an active warrant for a sexual

assault last year. now, lopez may be driving a vary chevy van that's primer and white. and this is the license plate number -- >> if you have any information, contact the police. 7:04. a new report points to an alarming potentially dangerous pg&e pipelines that could have gone unnoticed. pg&e found 30 leaks. four of them were found in large pipes like the one that ruptured. all of the leaks have been repaired. but since pg&e does not require frequent inspections of some lines, the problems could have gone undetected for more than a year. to prevent another tragic explosion in the future, pg&e is looking into replacing 300 manual gas valves with remote or automatic ones. the shut-off valves had become

a central issue in the investigation after investigators revealed it took crews 90 minutes to shut off the flow of gas after the september 9th blast. pg&e also reduced gas pressure as a safety measure. 7:05. well, there was some flooded streets in emeryville overnight after a water main break. a 10-inch cast iron broke shortly after 5:00 last night on hollis street between 59th. the water just flooded the streets. drivers were forced to detour around all of this during rush hour. the utility spokesman said they had to reroute service for at least one business in the area. but the service has been restored to normal. still not clear what caused that water main break but officials say this could just be normal wear and tear. it's 7:06. we want to check in with tara filling in for sal. we're hearing reports of a

motorcyclist down. again, this is in livermore on 580 westbound at greenville road. drivers say the motorcyclist was speeding and a pickup truck apparently cut him off. witnesses say drivers are not stopping or being careful around this accident. obviously, a dangerous situation. emergency crews are on the -- are on the way. you can see what we've been mentioning just after 6:00. quite a backup. give yourself an extra 15 minutes. metering lights are on. and northbound traffic 280 on the bottom portion of your screen, the headlights as you make your way northbound looking pretty sluggish at this hour. 7:07. here's steve. all right, tara. thank you. sunshine already. but it's cold out there. 30s and 40s. we start off, one of the

coldest mornings. we usher in some cooler air. the clouds have been wiped out. the patterns changed here, we had the west to east direction, now we're seeing more out of north northwest. a cold morning but name returns. a little breezy higher elevations. now, clouds arrive thursday. they -- nobody is in sync for this system coming in later in the week. rain look like it wants to pay a visit friday. but don't change any plans yet. 60s, coast, bay, inland. everybody will be in the same temperature range as yesterday. 36 st. helena, north napa, 39. kenwood, 39. petaluma and wood acre, 44. there's a lot of mid-40s around. reno is at 31. low 40s.

ukiah was dune to 40. 47 monterey and fresno. don't see all of -- that all of the time. book ends there. the next system coming out of the gulf of mexico will -- gulf of alaska but it will also slow way down. the night and mornings are cold. the next system as it puts on the air brakes, it looks like it wants to arrive late in the week. but then until milder, warmer. a little breezier on the hills. the weather could not be nicer for tomorrow. could not be -- i think game two weeks pretty good now. the five-day a little tough. friday we cloud it up. maybe some rain by friday and then into saturday. right now we have developing news. this is coming in from chicago. take a look. flights in and out of o'hare international airport are grounded because of the weather.

very strong winds out there. look at the skies. steve would call this an angry sky. they've got tornado watches and warnings in effect in chicago and that is just fouling up planes all over the place. now, we checked with the duty manager at sfo, he said two american airlines flights have already been cancelled because of these weather darns. more than 100 other flights to other destinations are affected because of what is happening now in chicago. illinois residents are being told to brace themselves for what could be the most powerful storm to hit that state in more than 70 years. we'll have more details as they come in. the excitement is building as the clock ticks down to tomorrow evening to game one in the world series. last night. the giants worked out at at&t park. they are getting ready for their series showdown with the texas rangers.

on stage with the current governor in long beach. they will be there for california first lady maria shriver's woman's conference -- women's conference. governor schwarzenegger will be part of a conversation with meg whit man and jerry brown. the session is called "who we are, where we're going." it will be moderated by tv host, matt laur. first lady, michelle obama, is also scheduled to address that conference this morning. last night, mrs. obama headlined a democratic party fund razor in -- fund-raiser. all of this took place at the fair monthotel. mrs. obama urged the 700 people in the audience to bring out the voters to the polls next tuesday and said there is a lot at stake in this election. >> we've come too far to stop putting the american dream that i know, that my husband knows

[ applause ] >> last night's event raised more than $1.6 million for democratic political races. it's 7:15. elections officials in contra costa county are expected to mail out corrected ballots today to thousands of voters whose ballots for next tuesday's election contain mistakes. the central contra costa county sanitary district contest was omitted from some ballot. more than 2700 ballots across alamo, danville, martinez and pleasant hill will be sent corrected ballots. today is the last day to send in a request for a vote by mail ballot. if you do vote by mail, be sure to send your ballot in soon enough so your county's registrar receives it by 8:00 next tuesday night. a post park of november 2nd

doesn't count. be sure to put enough postage on the ballot. you can also drop your ballot off on election day at any polling place in your county. the obama administration is getting tough on bullying. ktvu's alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. bureau to tell us about a letter that's being sent out to schools here in california sand all over the country. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the letter is coming from the department of education's civil rights division. it essentially warns schools they could be violating federal anti-discrimination laws if they don't protect students from certain types of bullying and harassment. now, this letter comes a week after students at a high school in san mateo wore purple in show of support for gay students. president obama is also trying to raise awareness of the problem participating in an

of michael russell's home and left him to die. bay area employers are starting to hire more workers according to a new economic report. beacon economic says within the last three months industries including high tech, financial services, research, arts and entertainment, hotels, restaurants and bars, have all hired more workers. the news is noted a goose for people in con -- is not as good for people in construction, retail government, where the work force has remained steady. the federal government will announce a $902 million grant for california's high-speed rail project. now, the transportation project did distribute 2.5 billion for projects all over the country. california and florida will get the biggest amounts. the $902 million will be split

among 18 projects. the bulk of the money will go to high-speed rail in the san joaquin valley. as california ramps up its efforts for high-speed rail, look at this, china launching a new segment of its high-speed rail system today. now. new route connects shanghai and hangzeu. this is the biggest high-speed system in the world. china's trains can go as fast as 217 miles an hour. that's about the same as the one that's planned right here in california. >> take us from san francisco to l.a. >> like that. >> in a couple of hours. a major new development out of iran. the latest step iran has taken in its nuclear program. also what a u.s. congressman doesn't want to happen during the world series. if you work near san francisco city hall, you may be taking a different route this morning. we'll tell you how and why -- coming up.

a government spokesperson said the program is -- in the meantime, afghan president hamid karzai admits to receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars of aid in iran and it's something the u.s. has known about for years, he says. he says he welcomes financial aid from many country but disputes reports that the money is used to buy off tribal leaders or taliban commanders. the u.s. state department says the u.s. recognizes the need for the afghanistan government to work with its neighbors.

7:23. well, google hit with another lawsuit and accused of sharing personal information. a bay area woman claims google shared information about her and some of the things she used google to search for with other entities, possibly, including advertisers. google has publicly criticized other companies for releasing personal information. thatle woman's lawsuit was filed -- that woman's lawsuit was filed in san jose court and has been given class-action status. one man wants to see a smoke-free world series. he's asking the rangers and giants not to chew tobacco in or out of the dugout. he says he's concerned the ball players who chew tobacco sends the wrong message to young people. 7:24. we want to check in again with tara filling in for sal, who is off for a couple of days. we're gonna learn more about

that accident in san francisco. a nasty fender-bender. >> definitely. police are diverting traffic while crews try to clean up the scene there. let's take a look at our live pictures on the accident on van ness avenue. you can see the traffic backed up there. this is van ness and hayes, a white compact car and a blue compact car. traffic is being diverted to grove street. it's an absolute night there. it might be a good idea to use franklin or larkin streets. those roads run parallel to van ness. or you could take market to circumvent this intersection all together. at the bay bridge toll plaza give yourself extra time to get into san francisco. it's bumper-to-bumper back to the maze and the metering lights are on. here's steve. all right. thank you, tara. for most, it's clear and told.

for those of you watching it to the north, points north yes, you are getting light rain. it's not much there. it comes into mendocino county and falls apart. we're getting a cold rain north of shelter cove since my forecast area seems to go from crescent city to san diego. that's what it seems like. 43 at mount tam. gilroy, 44. we had upper 30s, kenwood, st. helena, pacifica 49. san bruno and daly city checked in at 50. a little cool for some. you can see the system. there's not much left but it's a cold, showery pattern. for us in the bay. bring morning, sunny, mostly sunny. 30s to 50s. napa 37, oakland berkeley, 33. everything dropping down. so a chilly morning, sunny and breezy. breezy in the hills along the coast.

we've been following developing news out of hayward where there is an ongoing investigation into a suspicious overnight fire. the fire near hesperian boulevard damaged several cars. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us live from the scene with details on the investigation. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. an inspector is out here and residents really can't help themselves from come ought here and looking at this. firefighters put up the caution

tape. a neighbor shared his video of flames with us. this is what is left. some vehicles -- some neighbors even found melted car parts on their vehicle near the fire. the good news, no one was mortgage. now, if -- no one was hurt. firefighters arrived at 3:50 to this. the fire engulfed four vehicles underneath a carport here. smoreses reacted fast and saved interest car or suv. we spoke to the battalion chief this morning who said this fire is definitely suspicious. he said an arson investigator will be out here. neighbors describe a scary situation before firefighters arrive. they heard a boom and they say they saw smoke and flames. >> people start yelling and -- it was like a panic because people like -- it was like the san bruno thing.

some people were yelling, the apartment's on fire. everybody was tripping. then we came out. we just moved in a month ago. it's kind of like our first experience. >> reporter: you are looking at the only area with fire and smoke damage. initially this was called in as a dumpster car that spread to the carport but neighbors say that was nowhere near the fires erupted. it is suspicious. fire investigators are out here this morning. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. 7:32. well, a jail nurse in the east bay is in very serious condition following a violent attack. it happened last night at the martinez detention center in downtown martinez. investigators say an inmate was

being booked when he suddenly flew into a violent rage and attacked that nurse. she was badly hurt. now, the attack last night in martinez follows saturday night's deadly attack on a worker at napa state hospital. know, 37-year-old jess massey, the patient accused of killing that napa state hospital, is due in court today. he was arrested after 54-year- old donna gross was found kill in an outdoor area of the hospital on saturday. the motive is believed to be robbery. despite complaints from coworkers about a lack of security there, investigators say this is the first time an employee has been killed on the hospital grounds. >> there have been homicides there before, involving patients on patients. but it's rare. >> investigators aren't saying yes, how ms. gross died but an autopsy scheduled for today could give more details about

her death. hospital officials will hold a candlelight vigil in memory of ms. gross. that's at 7:00. a suspect is set to be charged for the shooting of a man at an atm in oakland. police announced the arrest yesterday but they are withholing the suspect's name. the 28-year-old victim was shot in the back at a rockridge shopping center on 51st and broadway. he remains in the hospital. police say the suspect and victim knew each other -- victim knew each other. jerald constantine, an auto mechanic was rushed, to the hospital on the 8th where he died of heart failure. residents say they were not contacted from the hospital and it was not until ten days later

welded down. it's securely in place. caltrans says this is the second beam you should be able to see this as being -- as it's being put into place sometime around 1:00 p.m. all four sections should be in place by friday. when that's done, the tower will stand about half of its final height. then in the coming months, three more tiers will be stacked on top of this. the new eastern span is scheduled to open in 20 13. we need to check in with tara. i just checked on the maps. the accident is really close to city hall and the bill graham civic auditorium. that's such a busy area. >> that's true. this two-car crash is really making a tool on the morning commute downtown. it's bumper-to-bumper on van necessary city hall. this is an accident involving two cars. the vehicles are still at the

intersection shen. a tow truck should be arriving soon. you can see the blue one that was hit. traffic backed up as we mentioned. a lot of those folks are being rerouted right now onto grove street. as an alternative, franklin runs north and parallel to van ness. that might be an alternative or golf runs parallel and southbound. i'm not sure how this is impacting traffic near market street. again, two car crash near van ness and haze. this is 101 near san jose. traffic on the right hand side. really not too bad at this hour. 7:39. here's steve. >> thank you, tara. >> look at this. look at this. the future is so bright i'm gonna have to wear shades. inle you are up in mendocino county and lake county, it will be cold. a lot of 30s, 40s.

obligations. contra costa's county pension fund could go broke in 15 years, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. there was an ugly clash between supporters of two candidates in the kentucky senate. >> get the police out here! >> look at this. the supporters of ran paul attacked the woman -- rand paul attacked a woman outside the debate. that woman is a member of the organization "moveon.org." in florida, you can actually see this incident. the democratic candidate, alex sync, is shown a text message from a staff member during the break. now, the republican candidate saw what happened and complained. after the debate the sync

campaign released a statement saying the adviser who sent that message had been removed from the campaign. an alarming new report about the safety of natural gas pipelines here in the bay area. pam cook's in the newsroom with the story on how the problems were found and what's being done about it. >> well, the commission required pg&e to examine their pipelines after the fire and explosion in san bruno last month. what was found is causing concern. 38 leaks were found in the gas lines. four of them like the one that ruptured. other problems were located in american canyon, napa and hollister in san benita county. according to "the chronicle" and a report filed by pg&e, all of the leaks have been repaired. since pg&e does not require frequent inspections, critics,

i.d.s to get services from the victims. a federal hearing starts today that involves a south bay woman accused of santa clara county of illegally billing taxpayers for foster children. her name is donna mcclain. she said social services took away her boys back in 2001 after her former husband made a false claim during the divorce. she got her children back. five days later. she sued the county and won $500,000 settlement. but ms. mcclain said she found a document that she says indicates the county counted her two boys as five. and she billed the federal government reportedly now, mismcclain said she also found records -- a spokeswoman for the county says thal gas

stations have no merit. the county is asking the court to dismiss that case. 7:49. in los angeles, authorities are weighing criminal charges for three juveniles accused in a deadly crash. police say three boys in a black bmw ran a red light, hit and killed a pedestrian and then slammed into a school bus yesterday. the bus flipped over, injuring the driver and 18 students. police say the suspects tried to run away but -- but were caught by a construction worker. police are awaying results to see if alcohol or drugs played a role. well, the washington state attorney general wants to ban alcoholic energy drinks. all of this comes after several central washington university students were sickened after drinking them at a party. at least nine of those students had to be sent to the hospital with blood alcohol levels up to 3.5. the fda is reviewing the safety

welcome back. time now 7:52. health officials in contra costa county say they've been getting several complaints about bedbugs at apartments along monument and concord. they are planning to hold a public meeting about bedbugs this thursday at the meow homes. the county will be talking about detecting and managing this problem. the bites cause problems but are not known to carryny diseases. this morning we're finding out more about what an oakland company has agreed to do in

return for government approval to build a huge solar power project in the mojave desert. solar millenium will build this near blythe. 7:53. tomorrow, marks the beginning of giants' pride week. mayor newsom made that proclamation yesterday. he's encouraging all crowds and businesses to show their support for the team by displaying signs. the city is flying flags above city and all other landmarks already. because of their success this year, the giants are say they are already seeing a surge in season ticket sales for next year. the san francisco "business times" reports that about 3500 new season ticketholders have

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's tuesday, october 26th. an arson investigator has arrived at the scene of a suspicious overnight fire in hayward. it damaged several cars. we've got home video of the flames. jade hernandez joins us. she's live out there. you've been out there all morning. you have the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: good morning. we've chatted with the

battalion chief. we've spoke to several neighbors out here. an arson investigator is out here right now. in fact, you can see what's left. these vehicles are charred. destroyed just a shell of what they used to be. a neighbor shared his video of flames with us. firefighters arrived at 3:50. they evacuated residents and contained the flames in about ten minutes at a complex along arf avenue in hayward. some residents scrambled to pull their vehicles away from flames. luckily, no one was hurt. we spoke to the battalion chief who said this fire is definitely suspicious. an arson investigator is out here trying to determine the cause. a neighbor described waking up to an explosion which some feared was a gas line break. >> it was like a boom. i thought it was a car alarm. and then my car started to go -- the alarm started to go off. >> at this time, this is under

authorities are still looking for a 13-year-old southern california girl. an amber alert was issued around 1:30 this morning. a short time later, the girl's father posted an emotional message online. >> you have to come home. turn around and come home. you have many options to choose from. please. all of your friends and family are worried sick about you. >> reporter: her parents reported her missing on sunday. they say she left the victorville home with 22-year- old ivan lopez after he befriended her on the internet and through text messages. san bernardino sheriff deputies says lopez has an active felony warrant for a sex crime involving a nor. he's possibly driving a 1973 chevy van that's -- that's primer gray and white. if you have any information, call police. we're also following

san bernardino officials believe this girl is with ivan lopez. they say he's wanted for a sex crime that happened with a minor last year. a jail nurse in the east bay is in serious condition following a violent attack that happened at the martinez detention facility in downtown martinez. an inmate was being booked when he suddenly flew into a violent rage and attacked the nurse. governor schwarzenegger is offering condolences to the napa worker killed over the weekend. the suspect, jess massey, who was a patient at hospital, is due in court. he was arrested after 54-year- old donna gross was found dead in an outdoor area of the hospital. the motive is believed to be robbery. despite complaints about coworkers about a lack of security, investigators say this is the first time an employee has been killed on

a report now from new york says charlie sheen was hospitalized early this morning for a psychiatric evaluation. that's after officials say he was found naked and drunk inside of a new york hotel room that was trashed. a woman called police to report that charlie sheen was yelling and throwing furniture around the room. now, sheen was not arrested but checked into the hospital himself. his spokesman said sheen had an allergic reaction to medication. charlie sheen was visiting the city with his ex-wife and two

daughters. it's not clear if she's the one who qualed police. the vallejo city council will vote tonight on the vote to transfer service out of the jurisdiction. the proposal calls for the merging and shifting of vallejo/benicia bus into a new entity called solano county transit or sol-trans. this could be complete within a year. drivers in redwood city could see more red light cameras. the city installed two more cameras at whipple and veterans boulevard in 2007. the city council is now considering cameras in other areas. there's no word yet on where they are considering the placement of -- replacement -- the praisement of cameras. it's ticket 2s day. five lucky viewers will win tickets to the san francisco
