topping our news this noontime, it is almost here, the first game of the world series 2010. final preparations are underway at at&t park. we saw fans lining up at 5:00 this morning and the crowd keeps growing. ktvu's kraig debro joins us from outside the park to let us know what's happening. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. today is the day the giants and their fans have waited for eight long years to come. for the first time since 1962, the first pitch of the world series will be thrown in san francisco. these fans lined up at early as 3:00 in the morning behind the right field fence. the giants are allowing people to watch three innings of the world series for free through a knot hole, which is actually a fence. why do you have to be the first three innings right here? >> the first pitch, the first

sounds. [ cheers ] >> reporter: after that, a second group row fates fate -- rotates in. it's the same for innings six through nine. >> i'm not sure it has sunk in. >> reporter: the giants' front office is excited, too, not only about the world series but what it means for the bottom line. >> it's a bump this year, but the bigger bump is next year where you will sell more opportunities and sponsors. >> reporter: world series merchandise is popular too and also going fast. >> i'll probably get me a jacket, and a shirt and maybe a t-shirt. and a pen. i always get a pen. >> reporter: the anonymity of the players, and that the rangers have never played in a

world series, whatever the popularity, it's to the extreme. lefty o'doul's hired a trumpet player to keep the rangers awake all night at their hotel. and then a phone call saying -- >> go, rangers! >> reporter: the black and orange flag was flown from the fire truck this morning. there may be some counterfeit items out there on the shelves and mlb will be looking for those. if you look, you can see there's already a large crowd gathering. a lot of people want to be next to the stadium. reporting live from kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, kraig. the coast guard is reminding fans about safe

boating in san francisco's mccovey cove. the area is a popular place for voters to get together and watch the game. the coast guard says the boaters should have safety boat on gear and skippers should also remember that drunk driving applies to the operation of boats. you can watch the entire world series right here on channel 2. coverage of game 1 begins at 4:0 p.m. following our -- 4:00 p.m., following our 4:00 edition of the news. oakland police are looking for the people responsible for three shootings in less than 24 hours. five people were hurt. one of the shootings happened yesterday morning. the other two late last night. officers say a woman came to the police administration building just laugh 11:00 last night -- just before 11:00 last night and said she was shot at 52nd and east 12th street.

an hour later, police said people were shot on mandella. and another shooting, two men were wounded on east 12th street not far from lake merritt yesterday. oakland police invited the public to the museum. with the election coming up next week, chief anthony batts -- >> it's not my position as the chief of police to take a position on a ballot measure but anything to help us enhance our resources and deal with crime in an efficient way, i'm always supportful.

>> the number of homicides in oakland appears to be dropping. police say last year there were 89 homicides. this year, so far, there have been 65. we've already mentioned the world series but there is another important event happening in the bay area. in a few hours, tesla is unveiling redesign factory in fremont and big names will be at the ceremony. paul chambers has more from from mont. good afternoon, paul. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. it's been a long time coming. it was about six months ago that nummi closed their doors here at this plant and we're about three hours away from tesla's ceo and dianne feinstein being here to unveil the new factory. we got here a little early to give you a first look. >> this is gonna be the home for the model-s, the first electric car built from ground up as an -- from the ground up

as an electric car. >> reporter: this will seat five people and have a battery range of about 300 miles. the plant it will be built is here in fremont. tesla officials say the model-s production is not expected to begin until 2012. but some of the equipment needed is already on site. currently there are around70 tesla workers that have been hired. some are former nummi employees but as production continues, the job growth is expected to grow to 500 people. >> we'll hire a fraction of what nummi had. at production we're gonna ramp up to a few hundred employ employees. >> reporter: over the next few months, the plant will have a makeover of sorts with a lot of construction going on to make the product.

tesla is keeping the left jeff machine as well as bringing in new items. the plant is expected to make 7,000 in 2012 and then 20,000 in its second year. i'm paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, paul. later today, the metropolitan transportation commission is expected to give millions of dollars in grants for electric cars and their support equipment. $7million will pay to install four switching stations for taxis to use in san francisco and san jose. that gives heavily used cars a place to swap a depleted battery. they will give 61 electric vehicles that can use the switchable batteries. an however who officer who worked at a bay area jail is now in jail himself. fire engulfs 0 bay area business. we'll tell you how -- a bare -- a bay area business. we'll tell you how.

sentencing for johannes mehserle is a week from friday. the prosecution is asking for jail time. the defense wants probation. now the family of oscar grant is preparing to speak in court. ktvu aclaudine wong sat down with the grant family over what they plan too say to the judge. >> reporter: the family of oscar grant just finished writing letters to the probation department for its presentencing report. now they are preparing to address the judge. >> there is a host of things i want to tell the judge. oscar lost his life senselessly, senselessly and there was no reason, no necessary -- it wasn't necessary for the actions that was taken to be taken. >> i'm gonna tell the judge how oscar and i was connected how, close he was to me like a son. we had had a really special connection, best man at my meeting. >> reporter: grant's fiancee says she's nervous about

speaking but she wants johannes mehserle to get the maximum sentence of 14 years for grant's death for leaving their little girl without a father. >> i mean, that's the max. i don't think it's enough but that's what he can get and i would like to see it. i would like to see nothing less. >> reporter: but almost two years after the shooting of grant was captured on video, the family says his loss is still impossible to put into words. >> you just can't express exactly how you feel to somebody about a loss and the judge -- i'm gonna try. that's all i can do is tell him that. he needs to go to jail. not just for what he did but for the system because we need the system. that's how we live. we need it. >> no satisfaction to be found in that courtroom. i don't want the courtroom to just say -- courts to just say, go home. i want the courts to do what

they are supposed to do. >> reporter: their statements along with others will all be considered by the judge but he will have the final say in johannes mehserle's fate. >> the impact statements give a glimpse into what his death has meant to the family. tonight at 10:00, they talk about the continuing struggle to go on, what landed his mother in the hospital, and why his fiancee says she knows she needs help going forward. rita williams sat down with johannes mehserle mehserle this week inside of jail. tomorrow night, for the first time, you will hear from johannes mehserle on the shooting and what he thinks should happen at next week's sentencing. our exclusive report airs tomorrow night on the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2. a state prison official accused of selling drugs to prison inmates is behind bars in santa clara county.

undercover officers arrested 38- year-old sergio nugella in gilroy yesterday. he was allegedly picking up cell phones and drugs for the inmates. police say he was also getting $2500 for his services. he's being held on $130,000 bail. san jose police are searching for the men who robbed two marijuana dispensaries at gunpoint. surveillance video shows them robbing the store. cash and marijuana were also taken from the dispensary. they believe the same two men robbed another san jose dispensary on september 18th. a two-alarm fire in the south bay did considerable damage to a business. the fire was reported about 3:15 this morning at the corner of east santa clara street in san jose. a passerby spotted smoke coming from wendy's party shop and

called 911 and then took these pictures. firefighters say it was fortunate someone saw the fire. >> the fire came in at 3:15 this morning. under those circumstances, there's really no one around to see what's going on to call the fire department and call 911. in this case, there was someone walking by that did see some smoke and fire coming from the building. >> they say my store on fire. then i run over. >> investigators say the fire did not appear to be arson and there were no reports of injuries. roseville city officials have now confirmed fire sprinklers were shut off at the mall last week. now an investigation has been launched to determine who ordered them to be turned off. the mall plans to open before thanksgiving weekend. a 23-year-old man is accused of

starting the fire. rescue workers are responding to two separate disasters in indonesia, the eruption of the volcano and a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami, and as rescuers began to arrive at the site that struck on monday, they estimated the number of people killed to more than 300. another 400 people are missing. rescuers still have not reached the most remote villages. planes and helicopters are delivering supplies for the first time today. and the eruption of the most volatile volcano there erupted. that area is prone to earthquake and volcanic activity. some legendary giants' players visited some young patients at ucsf's children's

fort bragg, shelter cove, clouds are increasing. temperatures 60 degrees which should hold through game time. some rain to the north. very strong and dynamic system. this one is comb compared to the one -- cold compared to the one we had had over the weekend. this one came out of the gulf of alaska. the clouds are streaming to the north. if you went out this morning and said my goodness, it's cold out. it was. kenwood was 32. these were the morning lows. cordelia, 35. danville, 35. menlo park, 39. mill valley in there as well. we had a lot of mid-30s and upper 30s and 40s. we had had sunshine for a while. now these higher clouds are coming in. the highs will be very similar to yesterday, maybe warmer toward san jose. there is a pretty good breeze coming off the caldecott

tunnel. 60s today. right now, it's 64 in napa and santa rosa. they go from 36 low to 64 at noon. 62 oakland berkeley. low 60s including palo alto. so everyone is rather close on those temperatures. 80 in san francisco. i think i saw 18 at truckee. they are now 46. ukiah was down to 35. sacramento, 62. sacramento was down to 41 this morning. here's our system it's going to be with us not only later today but probably saturday. when you see a system like that, that's the low wrapping up and that will play into our weather. the clouds are in advance of it and eventually it will get bumped inland. today we have morning sun giving way to higher clouds, more clouds to the north. on thursday we'll keep the rain to the north. the question is will it make it past marin county? we'll just ease in to that, fine-tune it tomorrow. it will be fair today.

not stopping at the jack london square or the coliseum station. amtrak is providing bus station when needed to and from the station. ktvu is announcing the winner of a special bay area hero for our parent company, cox enterprises. ktvu named bruce byart as the winner. in a small ceremony last night, he was one of five and received the most votes on the online poll to become the winner. he plans to donate his $5,000 reward to the bay trail project. apple is apologizing to some anxious fans. we'll tell you what they are waiting for. carly sheen's having problems again -- charlie sheen's having problems again. we'll tell you what about now.

manufacturing challenges with the phones. but they won't say what it is. some changes are coming to the gold's gym. the director of local operations said today that he plans to cancel the gold's gym affiliation when the contract comes up for renewal in 2012. that's because of a $2 million donation to karl rove's political organization by robert rallying. that triggers controversy about whether gay members will be angry about the donation to rove. police say charlie sheen was naked and in a hotel room and his client says he had an allergic reaction to medication. coming up at 4:00, countdown to the world series. we'll have live coverage from
